- Slipper clutches, like any other motorcycle aid, help better the riding experience by pardoning the mistakes. A slipper clutch prevents the rear wheel from locking up and hopping when you make a downshift too aggressively or time it badly. On today’s episode of PD Simplified, Shumi explains how the slipper clutches work.

Hey #PDArmy, we hope this helped you understand slipper clutches! Do give the video a Like and let us know below what more you'd like us to simplify.
Please guide on choosing riding gears specifically on Riding jacket/Pants/boots like you did previously on helmet. There are few different types and quality in the market but choosing one out of them seems a bit of a hassle for first time buyers as like me.
Morning class by Shumi Sir🙂
❤️❤️
Would love to see a video on front vs rear tyres on a motorcycle and the pros and cons of using a rear tyre in the front when some odd front tyre sizes are unavailable

No matter what series you start or stop.. please don't stop the simplified series. It actually intrigues the motorcyclists in us who genuinely want to know how our beloved motorcycles run... Thank you Professor Shumi!
Sir yes sir!
Hey, engine braking and rev-matching while downshifting, would be a good thing to explain, I think!
Absolutely
yes it should have been atleast mentioned in this video once. and explained 20 sec.
It would require like a visual demonstration for better understanding
If I have a slipper clutch do I need to do the rev matching?
@@saurabhkakde3502 Rev matching is more fun but technically it reduces the penalty for not doing it. My 19 zx6 is supposed to have one but twice now when I had a "Shift event" the rear tire definitely broke lose both times so I'm not sure exactly how much back torque its supposed to limit.
It definitely helps when aggressively downshifting during an emergency braking on the steets
I would strongly suggest riding better so that emergency braking isn’t a common feature at all 🤣
On Indian roads, you can only do so much yourself. One needs to account for others' mistakes as well.
@@shu_mar emergency braking also consist of areas where brake fade occurs. One can engine brake and slow down without have to even touch any of your brakes. In hilly areas where one have to rely too much on brakes engine braking can be used. Also one also must take care of the speed themselves at the first place to increase the window where one has more time to react and take steps based on it.
@@shu_marI think you missed his point. You should always drive/ride carefully, but also put in mind there are careless drivers/riders still on the road even careless pedestrians.
That's why manufacturers added these features on Bikes so riders can be safe.
@@shu_maremergency brakes are for avoiding retard or animal on the road. You never know what you gonna get. Unless one would willing to ride extremely slow to the point of emergency braking necessity would be nullified, sure. You do you
Hi professor shumi 😅
Hi professor hobby 😅 (translated to english)

I know basic working and principal of slipper clutch but shumi you explained it in detail very smoothly.. You are actually master at your work ..Keep making videos like this and keep us educated.
Thanks for sharing, i used to think uni-directional quickshifter and slipper clutch offers similar solution.
Installed a slipper clutch and a hydraulic system to make it even easier in traffic !
silpper clutch is the most useful part and seafty feature to have on your motorcycle, rather than other gimmicky stuff. (i have mt15)
Thank you shumi. To make us understand about slipper clutch system
🍻
Always wanted to know about Slipper Clutches... Tried every possible portal... But it is really 'Simplified'.
Cheers!!

As a beginnerr and learning bike it will be big help 😂
You are the 5th video I watched on this subject; you, by far, did it the best. Thank you so much.
Kudos Shumi. The mythbuster!
🍻
This has happened with me , I was in 4th gear cruising around 50-60 and suddenly uncle in front of me stopped his santro out of nowhere.
There was less than 1/2 meter distance between me and the car, I panicked and started downshifting and also applied hard break. Of course I fell down my helmet savedme my bike got damaged and uncle drove off without even seeing what happened at back.
If my bike had sleeper clutch this wouldn't have happened.
Thank you Shumi for explaining this, I'm definitely going to buy my next bike with slipper clutch
PS : I was riding avenger 220
Glad to hear you are safe!
@@powerdriftofficial ❤
uh... no. Slipper clutch wouldnt have saved you there. front tire & brake is responsible for 80% of your braking power. Relying on the rear brake/engine brake in an emergency situation is just erroneous rider's decision making
Maybe a series on regular/preventive maintenance of bikes/cars?
yes pls
Yes that would really be appreciated
Simplified on : Hand ergonomics and foot positioning.
(Ps- aware that there was a video on reducing body aches on motorcycle which did touch did topic, but would really like a simplified guide in this)

@@powerdriftofficial 😍😍❤🤟.
Thank you Shumi and PD for taking this topic.
Always happy to help! :D
Thank you power drift....that was insightful.....I had a confusion.....even though an auto blipper is engineered differently......how is the end functioning result of slipper clutch different from that of auto blipper
Lets make this clear
The quickshifter allows u to down n upshift withouth the use of clutch lever
And the slipper clutch lets u downshift smoothly while taking away the jerk which u recieve after downshift
So the end results are
Quickshifter - shifting while accelerating without the use of clutch
Slipper clutch - downshift becomes smoother......so while taking on traffic ....like really hard....u dont have to engage on brakes .....just downshift and continue to accelerate
Quickshifter can be understood ....bt slipper clutch.....u need to experience it
Do check this out - th-cam.com/video/wiZ3oiWvtXs/w-d-xo.html
@@powerdriftofficial thank you.....it was very helpful....really appreciate it
@@vinayakmadhav1514 u r correct for the most part..... except for the fact that you quickshifter can only do upshift.....for downshift you need an autoblipper
An autoblipper facilitates fast downshifts. A slipper clutch prevents the wheel from locking up on aggressive downshifts. It’s not the same thing
Wonderful Shumi 🤩 Very simply put together, Thanks 👍😊
Thank you!
Always wanted to search for a video that explained this, but never got around to it. Thank you!
Always happy to help, Rishi! :D
🍻
Love the way you present. Also the idea of demystifying technical matters so well is laudable. Could you pls talk about bike engines and number of cylinder and their significance? Higher displacement bikes have 2-3 cylinders, not just one...Also, incase of some entry level performance bikes such as 300 cc, most are single cylinder but a few twin cylinder, why is that? What difference does it make...Thanks
Good suggestion, Sumeet.
Can do!
Thank you PowerDrift for explaning this
Great way of explaining shumi, complicated slipper clutch can't be explained more simple than yours
Thank you sir and PD for this
Happy help you! :D

I genuinely appreciate these videos. Thanks Shumi. & powerdrift.
Thank you Deepesh! We have more for you guys!

really simplified, as always rocking Shumi
Thanks!
..plz make a video on the differance of performance in inlines and V engines, v configuration makes a lot of torque across the rev range whereas inlines perform better at specific revs, which r better !! Pros and cons etc??. I personally luv the ducati l twins. Rode a scrambler and blown away how she was throwing me backward with a slight nudge of the thrrotle on almost all the revs and all the gears .😊😊😊
This video reminded me of my automobile lecturer from my old engineering days thank you sumi sir
I like this type of short videos, it increases my knowledge day by day, thnaks pro.shumi...👍

I have a MT15 with slip and assist clutch and i still manage to lock up the rear into corner..and thats a fun thing to do ..4th gear full RPM , suddenly coming to 2th and your rear goes suiiiiiitttttttt..thats awesome
I would most likely fall down instantly if I ever try that 😂😂
One query here, won't the slipper clutch reduce the strain on the sprockets during down shifts
Which in turn increases the life of sprocket as well drive chains ?
I would say kind of...slipper clutch will reduce the strain on the chain
Yup. But chains and sprockets last so long this is hardly a big advantage
Hi sir, please make next video about front shock lowering strap (drag strap)
Great explanation. You earned a sub here👍
Finally quality content from PD
Shumi has everyone in his CLUTCHES !!!! KINDLY ADJUST 😂
🤣
please do video on rev matching and throttle blipping! should we blip the throttle in smaller capacity motorcycles?
We shall do that. And yes, you can blip on any motorcycle.
@@powerdriftofficial thank you! Please cover if we should blip the throttle and are there any long-term risk of damaging the engine or the clutch.
Can do! And short answer is yes.
@@shu_mar thanks so much again professor!

cornering abs
your explanation is really very simplified. keep making such videos.
Thanks Pranav!
First time ever I saw Shumi fumble #SiplerClutch @4:23 :D Lots of love for Shumi :) #PDArmy
So can we say that it works like an ABS, wherein an ABS helps while braking and the slipper clutch helps while downshifting and both would help in not locking the rear wheel completely.
In some ways yes. A rolling wheel can be controlled and a sliding wheel almost cannot. Both systems keep’em rolling.
It's time for a Powerdrift Moto Academy 🥳🥳
Would be lovely to have one in India 😀

Hi Shumi, I love this series and am waiting for the video explaining revv matching. You are doing amazing work sir. Thanks ..😀😀
Thanks for your efforts really appreciate it shumi sir❤️👍
I wanna know about different types of motorcycle engines with terminology such as inline engines and which one we have to chose.
Can do!
This is was my self also thought abt. Do actually we need a slipper clutch in our daily commute?
Is slipper clutch a disadvantage for off-road focused bikes? I use the heavy downshift to slide and turn all the time and i don't feel that downshift skids are unsettling.
Beautifully explained! Bravo!
The way you explain stuff. ❤
Very clearly explained!! Thanks a lot!
Hi @Shumr/PD .. THanks for this one!

The Shumi tutorials 😃
Shumi sir I have a question... Does slipper clutch reduce , engine braking to 0? Or the engine braking is reduced to some extent... And in higher capacity sports bike we have different levels of engine braking..does that counter the work of slipper clutch? @powerdrift
I have been using the slipper clutch on rtr 200
Rode abt 28k kms on highway
I will say it takes away just 15/20% of the engine braking bt just the jerk part of it .....while shifting from 5th gear speed of 80 to the 4th gear .....it takes away the jerk bt still manages to engine brake
@@vinayakmadhav1514 ok that's great but have you tried ...rapid gear changes.. like going from 5th to 3rd
No. Not zero. Engine brake control is a totally diff tech though meant to preserve chassis attitude in the turn entry phase.
I have almost never went a track, but judging by road experience i feel auto blippers r more useful than slipper clutch in daily usage
I’d say I’m fine without either in daily use TBH
@@shu_mar that's true, but learning that on streets are not that easy. Can you explain a few tips to gain better control on corners?
@@foodsfor_thought Indimotard.com/two
@@shu_mar that's cool, but I'm from kolkata and there are no tracks in kolkata. I have only roads where I can learn.
Hi Shumi, Thank you, it was helpful. Will this feature be helpful while riding downhill. Engine braking is very effective during emergency in down hill section, slipper clutch equipped motorcycles are less effective at this scenario comparing to equipped one.
There’s no need! Use your brakes! Engine braking on downhill is an idea from a time when brakes were n not this good
@@shu_mar Thank you Shumi.
Very informative keep it coming
Yet another masterclass from the legend himself!! So happy to see these type of videos coming out!! Absolutely love them!!
Do we still have to pull the clutch for emergency downshifting in slipper clutch bike?
Yes. Unless you have bi-directional quickshifter, always use a clutch for downshifting.
@@powerdriftofficial oh great. Thanks for the info Sir..
Yes
I was waiting for this... 😍
love this series
🍻
If I understand correctly, with a slipper clutch in place, Engine braking will not be available the way its there now, usable in steep hill descent? Is my understanding correct, if yes, it can be a big problem putting extra pressure on braking system
Engine braking will be there bt just bit smoothened out....so u wont feel the jerk after a downshift....thus helping u to downshift without worrying about the jerk
Use as much brakes as you want. Modern brakes can handle it. Engine braking for descending slopes is an oooold idea from a long time ago.
Great video, subscribed.
Hi Shumi, did you upgrade your d390 to slipper clutch?
Never saw any need to do it at all n
Hey shumiii, Is there any News on RE Hunter 350.....!
Very well explain clear and concise, Thank you.
will it hurt the slipper clutch if more used ?
Nope. That’s it’s job. But if you’re not at a track and using it loads, you’re riding badly
Will Engine braking still work with Slipper clutch?
When shumi starts speaking , its harmony for petrol heads 🔥
Thank you!
Shumi, you forget the most important function, engine braking during hard or urgent breaking.
I think on indian highway .. for a common biker slipper clutch is one most important feature
Yes.....in my non abs rtr .......i have installed the slipper clutch....n its applications are just ❤️......absence of abs is never an issue for me
If you’re using engine braking in an emergency, you’re not using the most powerful control on your bike to the fullest. That’s the brakes.
@@shu_mar your riding skills must be much better than average inidian riders, and i respect your feedback. Howeever not all the bikes have great breaks nither all riders are that skilled and hence with my limited experience.. I am quite sure engine braking is used by many and it can help and save from an accident
