    My first impressions with the Ricoh GR III & Ricoh GR IIIx are complicated. In this video, I will share five things I love about these cameras, and five things I hate about them. Especially if you're considering one of these cameras as an alternative to the Fujifilm X100V or XE4, you may find my conclusions enlightening.

      Every point and shoot style camera has shot up in price. Got my GR III for around £600 secondhand a few years ago. Trading in my GR II brought the amount I had to pay to about £350. Now the GR II is £600! And the III £900 sometimes. Still not as bad as the 40% markup the X100V has over its RRP of £1350. Seen them go for £1600-1900.

      i shot a jazz show a few weeks ago and realized partway through that the images would look better in black and white. i’ll have to go back and change the recipe.

    I don't love the shooting experience of my ricoh GR III as much as my fujifilms, but as you said, its the only dedicated camera you can truly bring everywhere and that doesnt bother other people when you take it out in a public place. I love my GR III as I loved my GR II before it. And I endlessly look at reviews for things before buying them. I had somehow got it in my head that they had made the GR III somewhat weather resistant and I shot it like that for a few months. Really enjoying it as a go anywhere camera. Still only getting it out in a light shower nothing too bad. Of course dust did get on the sensor. So to me it's more that I am now a little wary of keeping it in just a regular pocket and cleaning out my camera bags more often. Ultimately Ricoh need to address this fully so the rep improves. Also my IBIS sometimes goes into oberdrive and shakes non stop for as long as you have the camera on.

      @@Reggiebphoto I mostly just avoid keeping it in trouser/short pockets. I have bought the filter adapter to put mist filters on but I assume they also help. I ended up buying both a GRIII and a GRIIIx, and they've become my only cameras (from multiple Fuji cameras). With a toddler, I was finding it a little difficult to carry around my X-T3, and these just fit my needs and use cases a little better. Sometimes I will carry both in a sling, but often depending on where we are going, I will just choose one of them and chuck it in my pocket. To your point about the dials, I have found them a little more useful for myself, and I actually shoot manual more often with these cameras. You're right on the ISO, but I often just treat that like a set setting, as with back in the film days. Honestly, these cameras have been a revelation for me, and I can't believe how good the lenses and sensors are on them. I feel like I get better results, or more desirable results (for me), out of these over my Fujis, and I just prefer the way they render (again, personal preference).

    I had a GRII. 3 things made me sell it:
    - the 28mm equivalent field of view, I felt that my iPhone could take the same picture most times, with an easier workflow
    - the lack of EVF
    - the lack of blur for portraits (f2.8 and 28mm eq.)
    Went for a Fuji X100F and overall it’s a better choice for me. I do miss the pocketability and general UX of the GR.

    5:38 YES!! I do not understand why everyone recommends a lens cap for the GR IIIx. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped the cap on the ground forgetting to take it off. Even worse, sometimes it stays on and the camera gives an error saying the lens failed to extend. It's simply way too easy to forget to take the cap off, and I worry that it will eventually damage the lens mechanism.

The biggest hurdle, for me, is the lack of EVF. I like to frame my images using an EVF. I’m also not too keen that this body lacks a tilty screen.
      I know all these shortcomings prior to buying the GRiiiX. The good news is if i can’t get my head around this camera I can craigslist it and not loose too much money. At least I can set the touchscreen to touch to focus and then fire the shutter.

    Good vid. A few things;
    1) Yeh it is annoying that there seems to be no way to turn off Live Preview for purposes of flash. What I have noticed is that when killing ambient light and then half pressing the shutter, it will boost exposure briefly to acquire AF, somewhat of a brief help but yeh not ideal.
    2) There is a way to automatically have that flat dial on the back change ISO without needing to press ISO first. I have my GRIIIx set up this way so that the two small 'command dials' control shutter and aperture and the large flat rear one ISO, and from the moment I turn the camera on, spinning the large flat circular wheel changes ISO for me without needing to push the ISO button. Keep playing with it, you'll figure it out (I can't recall what I did to solve this).
    3) I'm surprised you didn't list AF as a neg, typically that is where the majority of complaints stem from this camera. Especially street or something with the GRIIIx where we want to take advantage of f2.8 and 40mm and pop that subject out of the frame a little. I keep wishing it had the AF of my XS20 or XH2S where if it doesn't find a face it at least recognises the person, that in many instances would be enough. Body detection rather than Face is really needed!

      This camera hates flashes. I used the pentax af201g ttl and the q20 non ttl. The lumecube light panel just works better. The camera already knows how to expose the shot because the light is already on . The mini light panel is perfect in size, but the its a little under powered.. • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes probably that is it, but seeing as how Ricoh (and Pentax) cameras actually show you in real time the Auto ISO value that you will get as you pan the camera around (before/without having to half press the shutter button like we do with Fuji), I think this is a pretty decent compromise. You pan the camera at the scene, see the ISO before the shot and can make either EV bias choice (which lowers or raises ISO as Shutter and Aperture remain fixed) or change shutter or aperture if the ISO is where you want it already (to get the exposure you want). I actually hate that Fuji require a half press of shutter to see what ISO we will be given within our Auto-ISO range before taking the shot :(
      PS, I watched Samuel Streetlife's recent video and he quickly explained how he often uses Shutter priority and back screen snap focus to take sneaky stealthy shots. I have a hunch that owning a GR is a bit like dipping your toes into a cult and that secret ways of using the camera are eventually taught and learned that are outside of your regular camera comfort zone. Perhaps it takes time to gather these GR trade secrets! 😁

    I find that the hate for Ricoh cameras is usually from people who have never used it, used it for a week on release for a review, or saw an opinion of one of these and accepted it at face value. Usually when I push for detail/experience or respond to outdated info they run away. 🙄
    I am surprised to see another Fujifilm user praise this camera in general though. I love it. I upgraded from the X70 and wow does this camera have better UX considerations. All the well-thought-out modes and shooting styles you can do with this little thing is incredible. It's a real testament to having passion for product design. I almost feel like the people who worked on it should be designing something more important than fine art point and shoots. 😂
    My only negative for this camera is no flip up selfie screen. It's the only thing that makes me feel like I can't have full confidence bringing it as my sole camera no a trip or something. I need something I can use as low or awkward angles and selfies with the family.
    Bear in mind that I have a front filter so I have no dust issues, and no scratches. I also have a little grip for comfort and to protect the bottom of the chassis and battery door from impact. Plus, I bought one of the post GR IIIX models of the GR III so it has the more durable back dial. Finally, I have a couple extra batteries in my wallet, so I can reload if I need to in the day. These are probably pretty important workarounds, so I thought it was worth mentioning. It's still very pocketable. I actually use a small 1L waist pack where both the GR III and G7XII fit in together. So I've got great photo and video for less bulk than my X-T2.
    Also, nobody ever mentions this, but the AF is actually pretty good. I'd say it was more reliable than my Fujifilm cameras. At least up until X-Trans IV.
    It's maybe my second favourite camera ever, right after my old retired X70.

    Hey Reggie, thanks for the great video. The flash exposure preview is indeed a bummer. When I ran into it the first time I searched online for a solution and there actually is one. I do not remember 100% and my GR III is currently getting a sensor cleaning by Ricoh :D (they do it for free within the warranty period) so I can' test it now, but if I remember the trick is setting ISO to AUTO, so that the camera shows a proper exposed screen. Then you set AUTO ISO to only be able to very from base iso until one increment more and voila! Aperture and shutter speed to manual and the preview will be exposed correctly and the AUTO ISO will blink warning you that the ISO is not "enought" but of course in reality you have your flash. Hope this will work also for you. If it works for you maybe you want to make a short video on that to share it with the world :)

    • @Reggiebphoto

      I know, sorry. I guess I am having a hard time explaining it. I guess you want full manual and the screen should show you an exposed image to see and NOT a correct exposure preview (which would be black). if you put ISO to AUTO the camera will show you a bright image, but as you limit AUTO ISO to basically BASE ISO you are kind of in manual, but the screen is not dark. Not sure if I explained it correctly now. Once I have my GR III back I will try to replicated it and post here again. But I can tell you for sure, there is a workaround to see something on the screen and still use flash (similar to the FUJI system were you set the screen to exposure preview of).

      @2010andy1020 I hear what you’re saying, but that’s a workaround. If I wanted to change iso on the fly, I’d have to dig into the Auto iso and change the limits and that’s a pain and not the same as manual iso

    I bought a GRIIIx 18 months ago, but only after a lot of hesitation because of all the comments I read about dust. I eventually went ahead but also bought the (very expensive) Ricoh soft leather case with it, which adds almost nothing to the size while protecting the camera from whatever is in my pockets. The good news is that I haven't had any problems with dust or with the jumping around of settings when using the wheel or with scratches. The bad news is that it causes a delay in getting the camera ready for a shot and one of the best things about this camera is how quickly it is ready (if it's not in the case). So, is the answer to find a case that is a better compromise - one which protects the camera from the crap in your pockets but from which you can very quickly pull it out?

    Ricoh GR is an amazing camera at what is made to do. Such a small factor cam that looks like a phone to feature an APCS is amazing. I think its the price that gets alot of people away from it, it is quite expensive (GRIIIx is priced at 1.261,00€ or 1,333$ at my local cam shop). Altho in my book worth it, because I know what this camera is capable of, majority of consumer market sees this as a "small" camera and instantly connects it with generic point and shoots from 2006 and automatically assume its gonna have bad pictures. Unfortunately broader consumer market still thinks that size=better picture. Shame really because this is a beast of a camera in such a small body.

    I really loved using the first model of the GR, but mine fell victim to a large dust spot while I was on a really special trip and I haven’t been able to bring myself to purchase another since. I’m using the x100v for now but I hope I’ll be able to get something pocketable that I won’t have to worry about in the future.

      It's easy to fix if you have screwdriver and open up the camera and expose the sensor and use a dustblower.

    Would you recommend the GRIIIx or GRIII and why? I'm leaning towards the GRIII due to having the ability to shoot wide and crop, but I'm unsure which to get for travel/everyday use cases.

    I got dust at 6000 shots that wasn't able to remove, just paid 35 usd to get it cleaned with and official ricoh distributor. As a film shooter, didn't had problem with paying those 40 usd because it's like buying 2 film rolls 😂😂😂 and there's no other apsc camera so specialized for street photography with that size, so for me is not a big deal.

      @@thehouseofnothing you can buy a filter adapter for that purpose. Ricoh sells one specifically for the GR III but is a little expensive. Nisi also has one that's cheaper. I bought the latter from B and H photo. Hope this helps!

    You could shoot in RAW or adjust WB with camera's settings. Is there any sense to buy APS-C camera to use JPEG...No flash - have a look at the size of camera. Dust was the problem of GRII. GRIII has anti-dust system and it works...WB of Fui is flat and pale. Is it perfect? No cameras with absolute WB.
