I do hunt deer with mine for the last 18 years, I like my SKS better than the other guns I've used, (30-30, 270, 30-06.) mainly because it more rugged. that thing can take almost anything and still function very well. and it's way easier to take down and clean than standard guns.
I paid 700 for my Type 56 at a gun show in April, a little more than I wanted to, but it is an absolute dream to shoot. At the age of 66 I am going dear hunting this year for the first time ever. If I get one with my sporterized 7mm Mauser, I fully intend to try for a second one with the SKS. I don't believe you will regret buying one. I think I paid a little too much for mine, but I also believe in 5-10 years it will look like a good deal.
Very nice! Sks are extremely reliable. Keep it stock to run 100%. Those banana mags get weak over time and need new springs or flip spring around. I had a 7mm sporter that is spanish and it was haunted so i sold it, last thing i heard was boots walking down my hallway, and seeing a basket full of clothes get thrown off a stand in front of my eyes, hearing pop cans getting lifted and dropping. Sks is what im taki g out this morning for a early walk to confrim zero after swapping front sight post from a fat shorty to a longer taller front sight. Maybe ill see a deer. I know its hitting 100 yards because it had a 3 inch group around bullseye yesterday when i shot it.
100 yards minute of man? SKS... thats a win. Fun to shoot, fun to take apart, fun to clean, respectable caliber. Leave it as is or strip the old finish and hand rub oil onto the wood furniture into your own masterpiece. It a guy thing, you'll see what I mean. The SKS does not dissapoint. Btw nice video. A long way back I was, like many, starved for SKS content. After seeing dozens it seems like whenever one turns up as a recommendation, I view it. Thanks for contributing.
Gun Broker is usually not the place to find bargains but sometimes you can find a decent deal if you consistently check over a week or two. I found a 1966 vintage Type 56 in good condition that was still in cosmoline from importation there for $479 (plus shipping, tax and $25 transfer fee). Other than scoring one at a pawn shop where you can still find them for $400, that about as good as it gets. Mine is in perfect mechanical shape with a vg bore - the wood shows a lot of wear but I think that gives it character. I think this came from Albania. Look for one with it's bayonet and don't forget to get a chest rig and at least 20 stripper clips in case of zombie apocalypse. If you want to install optics like a red dot there are no-gunsmithing mounts that replace the rear sight and don't permanently alter the carbine. A 2 MOA red dot would be a good match for an SKS. While it will be deadly well beyond, I would recommend staying at 150 yards and closer for shots to get clean kill on a white tail.
Great all around rifle for hunting and Home Defense. I have owned a few ,when they were a value to buy. At today's prices, I wouldn't consider them an options. Too many other platforms at the money you'd spend on an SKS. I have killed many deer with it ( Iron Sights) and never had to blood track any of them. I use a PPU 123 grain, round nose, soft point round. It looks just like a smaller version of the 30-30 too. Does perfect on deer. I own a couple AK'S but my SKS ( 20 round mag) is easier for me to shoot and my chest bandoleer can carry almost two hundred rounds on stripper clips. It is a little heavy but because of the smaller mag length, one can get down close to Mother Earth an lay down some wicked fire. As a SHTF weapon it is perfect too.
Unfortunately, you’re right. I’ve seen a few Norincos in pawn shops from $500-$800. I’m still planing to try for a deer this year with one. I was also looking at those PPUs, they do look like mini-.30-30 cartridges!
I picked up a few boxes a couple years ago at Cabelas in NC for 10.00 for ( 20). Not sure about today's cost. Herters makes 154 grain ×39 that perfoms good too. Nice heavy brush round.
You really need an SKS/AK Sight Tool Adjustment tool. I set my rear Sight at 200, Zero at 25 YARDS. Confirm at 100 Yards. If done correctly the weapon will be Minute of Man out to 300 yards. ( Depending on ammo/ shooters skills ). After your complete this you can use your rear sight scale for other distances. Works very well too. Again depends in ammo weight and forms.
The sks is sensitive to heat in grouping. You could see your shots "walking up" the target as you went. On a sled, elevation is not a "you" thing. It's a gun (and/or maybe ammo) thing. Adding a peep sight could help, but glass-bedding is apparently the bomb on an sks.
Welcome to the SKS! Been shooting them since the 80s. One tid bit of wisdom, don't use foreign steel cased ammo for hunting. The bimetal (copper plated steel) bullet jackets are often too tough to expand at 7.62X39 velocities. That applies to both hollow point and soft point ammo. I hunt with my SKSs using my own reloads with Speer soft points. With open sights, and the limited power of the cartridge, I keep shots on game under 300 yards.
1 hits 100 maters, 18 meters use the battle sights, 25 meters use the 2 setting. All will hit point of aim if zero correct. 3 setting at 100 meter hits 9.8 inch, 25 cm above point of aim, use the belt hold( battle zero and 3 )and hit in the chest on man size targets. 6 oclock hold . Its learned from the russain manual. Target size 25,35 cm.
Way overpriced today, used to be 75-100$ gun not long ago. It's a 100 yrd. Gun and rnd. If you understand that you'll be happy but scoping it is a waste of time. Love mine, but don't ask from it what it doesn't have. 💯 Reliable, and indestructible 👍
Just cant get into the Sks...Good rifle from what i know..I'd take a Ak over a Sks anyday..But I prefer my Mini14 Ranch over that Sks China gun...Great shooting tho...👍

YO. Good video. Nice 100Y open sight shooting. Thanks for sharing. Take care.

I’ve got a deer with my Chinese sks got a heart shot didn’t make it far not even the full 10yards it dropped quick
Wondering, where it’s zeroed ?
Maybe his sight thing is on the 1 setting instead of battle?

Update 2024 tulammo is no where to be found lol
You made no sight adjustment
That is correct, yes.
I suggest you practice on the slingshot first.
What kind of rifle is that?
