    Great video as always! On TH-cam and the Quest 2, I don't notice a big dip in Quality to the EVO which is what I use. I mean I can see the fruit basket is a little more blurry, but close up content and colors are great. I just don't see $5000 worth of better quality with the Canon setup. I could see professional shoots needing the best, but for the average amature, eh, the viewer base just isn't there for VR yet.

    Have you tried using two Sigma FPs linked together for 180VR? Might be interesting to compare if you haven’t already. It’s a relatively inexpensive camera but quite small and can be rigged with lenses closely together. It shoots Full Frame 4K Uncompressed RAW with DNG files It can also support external timecode recording so the two camera can be in sync. What do you think?

    Looking this with new Varjo Aero and Canon wins this for me by very small margin, probably because I want to have that lens :). Far details are almost as good as FM DUO and for closer ones I can't see any difference. CA is controlled much better on Canon. For darker parts of the video FM DUO was better. Canon clips had quite bad compression blocks on darker parts of the video. Highlights were also some what better at Canon. Great content, thanks!

    Great video Hugh! It's so awesome to see this shootout. The biggest advantage of the EVO is image stabilization for moving shots. I think the future of VR180 video we should be able to to freely move the camera without making people sick. Does the Canon offer any stabilization capability or do any software plugins provide a good solution if you want to mount the R5 on a gimbal?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So no Canon R5 does not provide any stabilization and I will not recommend put it on gimbal neither. Canon only has horizon leveling. But the waterfall shot you see in this video is actually on a slider pushing in slowly - so it is moving shot - it look pretty stable but you should check it in headset. I think slider is the only "not sick" movement I will recommend in VR180

    • @allthings3d
      @allthings3d 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hughhou The slider works well since you keep it slow, but I thought at first it was problem on my end. I don't why with a 3-axis gimbal system you should have decent stabilization since it is only one sensor (right?)., especially if it is one of the new ones with an IMU metadata stream. Not sure what plugin could put it to use, but the combination should reduce a movement issues.
      Anyway, your VR180 music it one of the best VR180s out there and your color grading is top notch. It also shows off the Canon's range.
      Any news if the new Canon R5c will work with the lens? I am pretty sure it will, but of course it will push it even more out of my price range.

    About 12K: You can display more resolution than VR headsets are capable of decoding by using Tiled encoding. Normally headsets are kind of capable of decoding to their max resolution but you can squeeze extra resolution out of them using this. Only few video players such as Tiled Media's ClearVR allows this. This is especially useful today for 180 stereo and 360 mono or stereo. The other major benefit is streaming really high quality at lower bitrates.

    Hugh, first question, which camera does best for long form video recording at max resolution? I'm interested from a archiving theater productions perspective. With that in mind, second question, which camera is easiest to monitor and adjust settings on the fly while still recording?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first one I will go with Z Cam K2 Pro in H265. I run 8 hours Jazz Music live recording test for Oculus and it never fail. Then FM DUO come second when it connect to a computer with fast SSD drive (4TB). It is design to be livestream so it can also run forever. But you need a laptop with RTX 3080 to do so. Canon will overheat or run out of storage in 20 min. But it is the easiest to adjust setting on the fly. Wait for Canon R5c might change everything.

    Great, really hoping for some kind of successor for the EVO.
    Just have seen another video from you yesterday on OculusTV , where you have compared FM Duo, K2Pro and EVO (without the Canon RF Dual Fisheye) and thought "all right, quality of the EVO actually doesnt suck, but 30fps is not working for me)
    Will have to see that Dual 360 Go2 vid though, but some finished product that is a little bit more failproof would be better.
    On the other side, you talked about "pair up any dual camera with wide fov lenses , like 2x GoPro10 with Max Lens Mod , has someone tried this? Would wonder how this would look in Video.
    Those lenses have 155° FOV , what would happen if both cams were not lined up straight to each other and instead following a slight curve where both cams are rotated a bit outwards? Wouldn't we be able to achieve 180° FOV then, sacrificing left peripheral vision on the right eye and the other way around?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes. Those are all coming out. Since the Canon VR180 system is a hot release now so I need to focus on making content to support that. When I finish my Canon VR180 series, I will back to making tutorial on how to make any camera VR180. The only downsize is again syncing. Recording in the same sensor like Canon is the best in sync - then Genlock come second, what I do with Go 2 and GoPro 10 will have drifting if recording is longer than 20 min.

Please next time show first results of the cameras in optimal light conditions and then how they behave in low light conditions. I know in low light you easily can separate good cameras from worse cameras. But I like to see first what is possible in good conditions and then see the other conditions. I mostly film when I have good light conditions because in low light the results are mostly not worth to publish the videos. Also would be nice to put in a corner the name of the camera which is currently filming.

      Oculus TV is good for seeing color quality and blurriness etc, but it's still compressed and limited by Quest resolution.
      This makes comparing details and grain and such difficult.
      Dark scene grain and for example insta360pro's muddy color detail get smoothed out in compression.
      I don't mean to sound complain-y.. these clear side-by-side comparisons of parallel products on this channel are maybe the best on the internet - which is why I think high quality (preferrably native resolution) downloadable videos would add value.

    I have Canon Dual Fisheye and really disappointed with it’s miserable resolution only will keep it for future cameras with 8k/60p. But what’s really shocking is a quality of the footage available in 18+ content industry. After some investigation I found there is a DreamCam Nano1 or v388 models which is not available for regular users but if you could get one somehow or check the available content I guarantee it will surprise. None of the listed here cameras even close to this thing

    Advantages of fm duo: high pixels, cheap storage, Disadvantages of fm duo: inaccurate color, poor latitude, high noise, large lens tolerance, cumbersome post-production, requires a high-end computer, requires an external power supply, and is not portable.
