  • It’s time to create VR through a new lens. The RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens brings VR to Canon EOS, opening a world of possibilities for digital storytellers. It’s the world’s first digital interchangeable lens that shoots stereoscopic 3D 180° VR to a single image sensor*, outputting a single image file for a convenient VR workflow. This L-Series RF mount lens is compact, lightweight, and portable, shooting stereoscopic 3D* with a 60mm interpupillary distance and a maximum aperture of f/2.8 to a deep depth of field f/16. An exciting new entry to the realm of 180° VR production, the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens brings VR in reach.

      What’s funny is this is actually building off a solution to making 3D images back in the film era. The Leica Stereo, as well as a few other stereo image adapters and prisms made in the 40’s and 50’s. The big difference here, is the field of view is much much wider thanks to the fisheye optics. But it’s definitely an interesting evolution of an older concept.

    • @GaryBeilby
      @GaryBeilby 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Canon user, L lens investor. 0% chance of getting this cause stereo imagery just isn’t a thing. Every few years the tech developers try and wow us all with stereo TVs and stereo cameras and stereo content. And it always falls on its ass and fades into obscurity again because nobody wants to wear the devices you need to appreciate the rather subtle difference it makes.

    • @Citizenflaba
      @Citizenflaba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Plushies TV if you turn off the EVF and the LCD you can run the R5 in 8k and 4k HQ indefinitely without overheating (beyond 2 hours). Unsure if you can do this with the phone wireless monitoring app but this method works with an external monitor such as the atmos ninja V or V+. I agree that its unfortunate that the overheating is constraining and not ideal for professional shoots where continuous shooting for hours is expected. The fact that the 4k60p mode is line skipped and 4k120p is probably even less sharp is disappointing as well, thankfully 4kHQ24p and 8k30p are super sharp and not compromised and thus make for a great value proposition for those wiling and able to deal with the hoops needed to make use of the body. Hopefully the next generation or two of R5 successors (R5 II and R5 III) can have 24, 30, 60 and 120 HQ, not line skipped and avoid overheating without unconventional workarounds.

    • @Citizenflaba
      @Citizenflaba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just realized that 8k at the maximum the R5 does is 30fps is WAY too choppy for VR. 4kHQ60 or 8k needs to be added in firmware if this is going to be viable. 30fps for vr makes people sick. I don't know how likely it is that they'll do that but, its likely that the lens will be most useful on next generation bodies since we do not currently have HQ frame rates above 30 for the R5.

    • @CaptainJack63
      @CaptainJack63 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Plushies TV Citizenflaba is correct in that the heating issues are absent when using the Atmos Ninja V or V+ because all the video is pushed out to the external recorder via the HDMI port and the EVF/LCD are turned off. It's the EVF and LCD screen that's causing the overheating issue. Also note the Atmos Ninja V+ will save you money in storage cards as they are cheaper than the CFexpress cards that are used internally in the R5.

      This is a good question. The tripod legs would usually extend beyond the front of the lens when the lens is pointed toward the horizon, thus requiring the extension. I would think that most gimbals that keep their mechanics behind the plane of the lens should be safe. But it would be good for Canon to explicitly address it.

      These are good options. You will want to consider your subjects. The 85mm will have a tighter angle of view. While good for individual portraits and close-ups it may not be convenient for group photos or environmental images.

      Hi Ryan!
      After processing you can upload VR180 movies to platforms such as TH-cam. The greatest immersive effect is experienced when using an approved VR headset. Using a tablet, smartphone or monitor can allow for a 2D experience that will allow scrolling around the VR image with a pointer or by turning your smart device left, right, up or down. You can view a sample VR 180 video at the link here: th-cam.com/video/5GBpYANzvgE/w-d-xo.html

    Question: how can I watch this in my Quest 2 to see the stereoscopic effects?

      you cant watch this specific video in 3d..but you will find plenty of VR 180° videos on TH-camVR or Oculus TV App which were shot with other VR cameras. i hope Canon can show some sample videos soon.

    I couldn't focus on the lens as I really wanted to know who manufacturers that tripod with arm. I have a cheap knockoff that flexes a bit too much.

    Was any of this shot on the lens? Where? Possible for you to have a dedicated video for its application of the footage?

    Can this lens be used with other cameras with mounts and achieve the same final 180 result with the fish eye dual merge software?

      Hello Ozprana:
      This lens is intended to be used with an EOS R5 camera that has firmware 1.5.0 or higher and utilize the Canon EOS VR Software solutions.
      We hope this helps.

    Is this good option to shoot a 3D feature film for theaters when shot at 8K and resolution brought down to 2K for theater?

      Hi, San! It sounds like you've got a good idea. You may be able to limit the field of view in post production. Keep in mind, however, that this lens's focal length is fixed at 5.2mm, so you would have to find other solutions if you wish to get a shot at a different focal length.
      Hope this helps!
