Truck bed Tragedy

  • I am literally beside myself with the weak bed on the 2020 Tundra, apparently the weight of the FWC Project M was too much for it to handle on the trails that I was taking. You can literally say that I am definitely not a HAPPY CAMPER.
    For context, here are a few of the trails I was going down with my good friends 4WD Adventure crew!! / @4wdadventurecrew

    Good info! Back in 2012 I acquired a 2008 4x4 Tacoma which had higher bed sides than my previous 2004 taco. I moved my slide in utility body (very similar to a Tufport) and the dealer rep informed me that I had to install a sheet of dense foam on the floor of the bed to get the shell off of the bed rails. I had special hardware to fasten the shell firmly in the bed. No problems 11 years later..

    4WD campers should have alerted you for your specific truck model. I bought a Go Fast Camper recently. I received detailed messages prior to delivery from them on what was needed prior to delivery. My Tundra is an 04. All of these new Toyota Tacos/Tundras need special bed rail supports. They have a thin outer sheet metal skin and a composite material inner liner. They all need additional support for anything over 200 lbs supported by the bed rails.

    • @theangrycamper

    I have EXACTLY the same problem. '21 Tundra DC TRD with the 38gal tank. Ovrlnd camper (weighs 390lbs) on for 3 years. Upgraded suspension and I do have bed stiffeners in the rear. Carry nothing on the roof to add weight. Battery (40lbs) sitting right above the bed bolt in that area too, so well supported. Same crack in D-side front, but no bulge yet and no bed wiggle. Wouldn't know it's there except I checked after your video. Clearly Toyota did not support the bed well there, especially if you compare to the P-side same spot. Wish I could put a picture in the comment as it looks exactly like your crack. I don't abuse it, but do wheel tougher trails. Don't think it was the weight, but rather the torsion of wheeling and likely my last trip with a really, really rough run (aired down, shocks adjusted soft!) down the flat parts of Hole in The Rock Road with the absolute worst huge washboards ever. Please reply back or post up a new video on what you figure out to do on your rig to repair it. I'll do the same. Sorry for your problem too! Really nice interior build, BTW!

      I doubt many truck campers hinge their weight on an unsupported area of sheet metal. It's kind of like installing a bumper on your truck that you plan to put a winch on by screwing it to the fenders rather than mounting it to the frame of the truck.

    • @theangrycamper
      @theangrycamper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Joseph-du1cp well the project M sits on the bed rails and literally that is exactly what is going on here, the supports do not extend out to hold up the bed rails. It's the sheet metal of the bed that holds the front rail up.

  • @jbcadventures4163
    @jbcadventures4163 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Sorry, this happened. Curious if you had bed stiffeners on your Tundra? Did FWC recommend bed stiffeners? The reason I ask is I currently am waiting on an Ovrlnd camper to put on my Tacoma and Ovrlnd recommends bed stiffeners to reduce flex on rails, especially for rough offroad travel. With this said, I currently have a camper shell on my Tacoma and did some pretty heavy offroading recently, I could definitely see some flex going in in my mirrors as I was over some rough stretches. Going to go check my bed rails today.

    • @theangrycamper
      @theangrycamper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No one recommended anything. That said, the bed stiffeners that you are referring to ( I think) are the ones that protect the tailgate end from having the side walls flax, I don't think there are any products to protect the bed where my issues are.

    I am sorry that you had trouble with your 2020. I got a 2016 crewmax and I grabbed my crawler and slid under to check mine and they must have fixed it in the 6 years between our years, mine is a T.R.D. Offroad 4x4 with the 5.7 V-8 ( i could not tell if yours is ? ) . In hindsight, my camper is all aluminum and weights 380lbs. So that could be a major factor.
    The Tundra recall affects the model years 2000-2003, Toyota Tundra had a rust problem.
    EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER MAY CAUSE THE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE TRUCK BED WHICH WOULD PRESENT A ROAD HAZARD THAT COULD CAUSE A CRASH. ALSO, CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER COULD AFFECT THE REAR BRAKE LINES AND THE PROPORTIONING VALVE RESULTING IN DIMINISHED BRAKING CAPABILITY.

    This is typical. Despite camper companies making 'half-ton' campers, read the fine print; most half-tons say in the manual and in the glove box, to not carry a camper...of any kind.
    Payloads and boxes aren't designed for them, and any Toyota TRD sacrifices payload for off-road performance.
    Most people driving Toyotas, and half-tons with campers are well over GVW, and there is no modification that increases payload. Simple...read before you buy.

    Seems like the weight of the camper was placed on an area of the truck that is not structural (reviewing the design of the camper this is definitely the case). I would fault the design of the camper over Toyota. Sure the truck has a 2K weight capacity in the bed, but not the upper rails. It's a little bit like dropping a few hundred pounds on the middle of the roof of the truck and expecting it not to buckle.
