I think ASML is up there with the big corporations you talk about, they actually make the chips that let al these other tech giants function. ASML is a Dutch company that is currently the only manufacturer of the most advanced chips that the whole world needs. On the subject of AI versus ourselves: We may consider AI to be all logic and no feelings and hence without self-consciousness, but that may change! If it does not change for some time to come even before the change eventually occurs it is not self-evident that we would be masters over AI. Soon enough we would -as individuals, and per summa as a culture- be the servants of infallible machines... (old comedy quote: “computer says no...” -it is in fact already the case) We ourselves are biological computers, with conscience, but we are not aware of all that goes down in our brains. The subconscious processes do e.g. our routines and are highly effective. Consciousness and rational thought were not our basic brainfunctions; they came into being at some point in our evolutionary development. Analogous developements are to be expected to take place in self-learning AI, and also a tendency to divert from dedicated to general AI. If anything is to be said of these processes it is that they will obey the laws of nature. And so have we up till now, and will we in the future. This is all known teritory except for those possibilities within nature that we have not yet been able to explore, such as those of quantum computing. Another point where I do not wholehartedly agree with mr. Harari is the view that the world today is so much better in so many ways. Indeed
