  • Dr. Burns: Shoulder dislocations are common especially in young, active athletes, football players, basketball players, people landing on their shoulder. The problem is, is once you dislocate your shoulder, you very commonly tear the labrum which is kind of the surrounding soft tissue around the socket, and that makes it more likely to dislocate again. So typically, for first time, this locators, we give you the option of trying to treat it with a swing, letting things heal and seeing how unstable you are down the road. If you have recurrent instability where your shoulder is, is continuing dislocating over time, that's something that probably should be treated with surgery and you can we can typically fix that with an arthroscopic procedure where we slow down the labrum and maybe close the capsule down a little bit to tighten the shoulder so it doesn't dislocate quite as easily.

Does the duration spent prior to treatment matter? I dislocated mine on a fall 17 years ago. It's ok but limited to certain back twist angles where it dislocates again. Thanks
