    Awesome Video!
    How do you actually do that Hop? straighten both legs or pushing more from the Tail? giving max effort or just a bit? And for Step 1 you sending the kite just with medium Speed?

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      It's a small push off the water, followed by lifting the legs and thus lifting the board out of the water. For step 1, I'm sending it with medium speed. Not fast yet. Good question!

      Get High with Mike - Advanced Kitesurf Coaching when you say small push, is that through both feet or rear foot only, also when doing this small push do you move your body a bit up away from the water or lean back as much as possible ? Ps when are you in tarifa this year ?

      @@raphaelvvidal Good question. It seems to me that if you did not lean back hard (jump upwind - away from the kite) you would inevitably drift downwind and cancel out the benefit of the whole sequence.

    Ok a boring professional engineer kiteboarder here. I like the "energy in the system approach". The main energy storage comes from our body's momentum as that is where the mass is (especially after the off season). If we ride twice as fast the energy increases by 4 times. We want edging and line tension only to increase our speed right until we send it. At this point we use hard edging and pop to convert forward energy into vertical acceleration, airflow over the kite plays its part during the transition as it helps convert forward speed to lift and that too is squared relationship to speed. After liftoff we now rely on airflow over our almost static kite to add more energy to the system. If we edge too hard too early we dont build enough energy to be converted by our kite and pop.

    I've heard various people arguing for and against the idea that line tension/stretch stores energy to lift you higher; the physics is pretty simple, and the answer is no, it doesn't:
    Combining the equations for energy stored in a spring and gravitational potential energy, it's easy to arrive at a useful relation: the ratio between the extra height you can get out of the stored energy and the amount of line stretch is equal to one-half of the ratio between the line tension and your body weight. If the force of line tension is 6 times your body weight, then 10 cm of line stretch stores enough energy to lift you at most an extra 30 cm. If it's clearer like this: (extra height)/(line stretch distance) = 1/2 x (line tension)/(body weight).
    Somebody (the people who engineer our kites, probably) could explain it more fully, but I expect that preload pop's biggest advantage is helping with a fast upwind takeoff. The pop lets you turn a bit of upwind distance into a boost of extra speed without the drag from having your board in the water, and once you land you can quickly redirect your speed into the wind for takeoff ("quickly redirect" is key, since it reduces how much water drag and riding upwind can slow you down, which is probably why preload pop is hard). That DOES store a lot of energy; in 30 kts of wind, riding 30 kts 30 degrees upwind of crosswind, you have enough kinetic energy to beat 36 m of gravity, and an extra 3 kts takeoff speed gives an extra 6 m height.
    (Disclaimer: I am a physics grad student and a half-decent kiter. I have never done a preload pop or a 10 m jump. The math done in this comment is very simplistic, but "probably" gives a good comparison of spring and kinetic energy in big air.)

    Very cool video and informative. But I am not so convinced about the physics behind. It might seem like a good idea to "use gravity" to dig the edge deeper. But I am not convinced how is that going to happen if at the same time you are lifting the kite up, which takes your weight off the board. Also, as you get air you lose speed (same in kiting, skiing, car racing, you name it), and you are actually bound to go a little downwind as you do your little hop, hence actually reduce the line tension. My intuition would be that you would build more tension in the lines and more kite speed from staing on your edge

    I wouldn’t say that short answer is gravity. The short answer is momentum. After the peak of your pop your body starts going down with some speed. Speed*weight= momentum. This momentum resists the pull of your kite while you’re sending it to 12. Normally, with such fast sending, kite would pull you out of your edge. Your down momentum prevents you from loosing your edge for like a second.

    Awesome vid! You know I`m practicing. One thing I`m trying to figure out is what kite size to what wind is optimal for creating enough speed and power. Is it just pushing the biggest kite to wind that I can keep on edge considering having a good sweetspot? I make notes of my sessions to check what is the most opt size, because winds vary a lot. And I kite from 8 to 45ish knts with kites from 5 to 19meters and every one needs a bit different timing. Most days are 14 to 24 knts . Tips much appreciated. Soon I`ll have the board mount to really get going 🤘

    Wow great video mike! Do you have any extra tipps how not to backstall the kite too much before taking off which is caused often from too fast steering and results a far but not very high jump. Kind regards Bruno

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! Backstalling is caused by back lines being too short relative to front lines.
      From a physics perspective, it occurs when drag > lift.
      This can be caused by
      1) incorrect trim
      2) sheeting in the bar too much
      So 1) watch +Steven Akkersdijk video on how to trim correctly and
      2) if your kite is backstalling, let the bar out slightly on take off, or increase air flowing over the kite by riding in a manner that creates more induced wind (ride fast, with the kite low, on edge)
      Hope this helps! :D

  • @ivanostellato9478
    @ivanostellato9478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    think of the pop as the jumping or strokes a long jumper jumper takes before the big one, its kind of like bending your knees before loading the spring, jumping from speed and using even the tinest of kickers is imo the best way to develop jumping more than sending it and sheeting in etc, you fly more straigh than up and it is predictable, sending it well requires more training, i think people learn to jump quicker off kickers loaded, then theprogression to loops is easier because you are higher, flat water high jumps need more tension, usually bigger kites

  • @bekanav
    @bekanav 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gravity is same whether you preload or not. However preload gives your body (mainly legs) an advantage to push kiteboard harder into the water. It is same as what everyone does when trying to jump straight up: before starting upwards movement you should first go a bit downwards to preload (or actually to release tension of your leg muscles).
    Athletes often measure jump heights with and without preload. Jumping without preload is actually pretty difficult and it makes your result considerably worse.
    Another advantage of preload in kitesurfing is that when you do it you release some tension in lines and position of kite in WW moves backwards. This gives it a bit more room to surge forward when final hard edging follows which makes speed and lift of the kite bigger.
    You definitely go a bit downwind when doing preload jump but of course you can't do that too much. So preload jump must be low and fast.

    Awesome video Mike. I'm having a hard time doing high inverted frontrolls like the one you did at 7:09, I end up doing a involuntary down loop way to early, I basicly have a hard time keeping the kite in control. Do you have any tips? Thanks
