I've been looking for a guide to edging for a while now, and this is by far the best one. Thank you for teaching me how to properly edge! I love edging now!
This is the best tutorial I've seen not only edgidng but jumping overall . And since I am perfectionist I've seen lots of them. Helped me understand it even better.
That was such a good video. Thanks for putting this entertaining and informative high-value video together so we can all improve and have more fun on the water. You, sir, are a gem!
From observation you have a really good attitude about life in general, it’s great to see creative genius combined with gratitude balanced with fun in your videos & other business ventures over the years. Quite inspiring. Thanks for putting out good content & good vibes in general. 🙏🏻
Best explanation until now! Very useful. I would love to see an explanation video about the perfectly timed take off point. The point when 3 things has to be perfectly timed (Kite position), (sheeting out the bar without loosing line tension), (edging and find the moment to takeoff).
Brilliant breakdown and explanation of the most important skill to learn once you can fly a kite. You've filmed plenty of 10/10 videos on the past, so I guess I'd have to rate this one 11/10. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I was waiting for this video since "take off like a pro", I wasn't able to jump higher than 10m at this time. Today I got 25m+ PR thanks to your videos, on my way to the 30m club. Thanks again for all your job 🤙🔥
Wish I had this video when I started! Still got a LOT of info for the level I'm at. Big thanks. You didn't lie. It was probably the most important video
First of all, great video, thank you so much for making it! The first question that pops up - how not to lose the edging while sending the kite to 12 just before taking off
Great question! That's where your carve comes in. I like to think of the carve as 'a mechanism for fighting the kite until the kite is at 12 o'clock'. A lot of people think they're carving, but just like edging, it isn't black and white. The timing is everything. You want your carve to be IN-SYNC with the kite movement. START the carve as soon as you start the send. And for every degree that your kite goes up, you want to increase that carving angle. When you get them in sync, you're gonna get that kite to 12 at lift-off (with high speed and tight lines) and go massive I'll cover in-depth in another video.
Yes! THIS! I really liked your scientific approach. Now I would like to see the same for syncing carving and sending. This is the most unclear thing for me in kitesurfing. And there is so much bro-science and personal contradicting opinions on this.
I think it's the most useful video I've seen to improve jumping. It really makes sense and analyzes all the aspecs that matter. Thanks a lot for all the effort and advices. I will try to apply everything on the water. The problem is that I live in a very choppy spot and it is so difficult to keep the edge. You give some advice for choppy conditions towards the end of the video, but it would be so helpful if you could please devolop further on this issue, since I have not found any video that specifically tackles the problem of jumping in choppy conditions.
Here in brazil we love your videos, I will definitely gain about 3 meters in height because of this video, one of the most important in the progress of any kitesurfer, good and quality information, thanks man.
Great little thank Well explained and demonstrated and intermediate rider I’m 62 back into the sport Us older folks often don’t want to jump more than a pop Back injury that takes you off the water and is slow to heal is counter productive
Mike, Thank’s for this awesome vídeo. Interessant thing: you friend Anthon said in Learn to Fly Vídeo that we should ride most upwind possible for high jumps. Now, you say we can go crosswind for most lift…
Yes, I agree! Very lucky that we have such an amazing sport like this! Im absolutely fascinated by it! Mainly because I love anything that flys. The whole concept of the kite and the power they generate just fascinates me.. I dont have to look at the kite much anymore but I do just because I love watching it. Kinda like watching a girl walking in a nice pair of jeans.. ok.. maybe not that nice but... 😅
One of the best kiting videos I've watched. Fantastic. I'll have to watch it several times to get the most out of it, but it's exactly what I need. Well done Mike, team and thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! This video took me to the next level and I succeeded to edge full session. No more "walk of shame" back to start point
This video helped me get a better understanding of the ideal bar positioning for jumping. As I understand it the goal should be riding at the appropriate speed with the bar about halfway in. Then, as the kite is sent to twelve the bar should be sheeted out. This helps maintain roughly constant power since the send puts the kite deeper in the power zone, and the sheet-out compensates, thus letting the rider maintain a roughly constant body/edge angle. Then the bar is pulled all the way in at takeoff. This means that the bar ends up pulled in more than it was when riding, which together with the kite being deep in the power zone makes for a massive pull - much more than when riding. Most jumping tutorials talk about pulling the bar in to jump, but never explain how/when the bar ends up out. I've seen lots of confusion around this, from me and others. The discussion around using the depower strap appropriately seems really valuable.
It stood out to me when you said for the advanced riders not to turn too upwind and kill your speed!! In the beginning as well when you talked about keeping the board between me and the kite! I only took 2 lessons at 3 hours each and afterwards bought all my gear and have been learning from friends and TH-cam videos and watching this video again has revealed alot more that I didn't understand to begin with! Thanks for the great content!
As a begginer, this clip made me go upwing on the 2nd session after the course (didn't even stood on the board.). It made me realize and understand many concepts in no time. You're an amazing teacher, and should make this a "begginer to pro" series.
Content level 1000% You win the internet !!! Mate there must have been alot of work to dial in those diagrams and edit it all up ...... super nice . You do great things for Kiting Mike 😎🤙
One of your best videos, so stoked to see more videos like this! Would love some tips on how to apply this in gnarly chop, or chop / swell that is moving in the worst direction for takeoffs.
Amazing video. It's great how you broke it all down analyticly. It gave me a few ahah moments when I think about my own riding. Looking forward to trying a few different things out to try and achieve that locked in feeling!!
@@gethighwithmikeok so it’s been 2 months and I think I’m having a lot of success. My average height for jumps has gone from 7m to almost getting 10m on each session even when I don’t feel “well powered”. Looking at the breakdown of my jumps, I’m going between 30kph and 35ish on my jumps. But my edge angle is around 55 degrees so I really need to get to work on my ankles! This is only when the waves are good! I really struggle in the chop! The back of my legs are always catching on the water!! Anyway. Long story short. Thanks for improving my jumps!! ❤

Perfect Video, very good to See the angels and pointing out difference in pro and beginner, height of Kite and speed, copying water.... I learned a lot!!! Thanks
I edge like a mofo both heel and toeside, because that's all I do - and power loop carving. Sometimes I put the wingtip of my kite in the water. But I've designed and built special boards that allow for waaay more control. Most kiters don't fly their kites low enough. Great video btw.
Mike, with this video, you turned my overpriced low wind kite holiday into an awesome time. I had to watch it several times to get to grips with the subtleties, and i probably still have loads of work to do, but i started off with endless walks of shame and within a day, upwinding better than the kid i was insanely jelous of the day before. Not had much oportunity to test it with big jumps yet, but i imagine it will have a nice impact on those too. If only i could afford your luxury sessions, i imagine the progress would be out of this world. Still, I'll take these videos for now. Thanks for takimg the time to share your knowledge.

Hey @gethighwithmike, this video is really interesting. I've been working on improving my edging, but since I kitesurf in Belgium, I encounter a lot of choppy conditions in the spots here. Could you please share some additional tips on edging in choppy waters? It often affects my take-off, and I'm wondering if it's something I just have to accept, or if you have any recommendations to deal with it?
Great video mike. Super clear and analytical. I'd love more info on what to do in chop (like at the end of this video). Most places I kite (SF bay area) are always choppy and I don't know how to approach the jump well. In 18-20 kts on an 11m I'd think I should be able to do 8-9m jumps pretty consistently, but its almost always 5.5-7m for me. I'm doing something wrong and I think its the edging with the chop.
