Many of Jocko's themes are retold by Jordan in a different way. Jocko provides with realistic examples and Jordan goes into the philosophical aspect but both are trying to say the same things.
There are a lot more people, repeating the same idea and neither of them came up with it first. I'd say, people in the same field of expertise tend to repeat the same thoughts(just in their own way). It might be that they came to the same conclusions during their work, or they got it from someone else or from each other, gave it a thought and concluded that it is right. So they spread the idea further. If the idea is confirmed by multiple sources, this is how you know it is legit (or at least has a high probability of being legit). That is why it is generally a good idea not to pick a single book on, say, self improvement, but to read lots of them and by different authors too. It also is good, because our brain works that way, that when it gets the same information over and over again - it will stick.

If a person believes they can communicate telepathically, or that an entity is watching them and will reward or punish them for their conduct, a psychologist would conclude that such a person is suffering from a serious mental disorder. It is a disgrace that this is forced upon children. People who do this should be ashamed.
3:12 struck with me. In 3 years I went from being in an abusive relationship that made me suicidal to getting a great scholarship at a uni, and now a well-paying internship at a successful company. Also quit smoking pot after a habit of daily consumption with my friend. Meanwhile the friend stayed the same way, smokes an oz or two of pot a week, and dropped out of school - just smokes pot and plays videogames. It's really depressing to see friends too deep in their own shit to even see that they are in it.
Listening to this as I prepare for full time school. Got no family to back me up so I'll have to find a job that will pay my rent and I'll have to be super frugal but if I can graduate it will all be worth it.
That is a very tough route. I say that from experience. If you can find ANYTHING to make your life a little easier, then do it. Maybe find someone to cook you food to save you time, maybe buying a car so you don’t have to rely on transport etc.

Someone once told me that all motion is relative: you can move further away by standing still. Sometimes we need to leave behind something dear to us to go forward. Sometimes we didn't even realize we could live without it until we give it up. The right state of mind has (in my experience) given me perspective and gotten me through it all.
I find I have to relearn some of the most important lessons over and over. They become forgotten when I guess they aren't needed as much and then I find myself rediscovering them. A lot of people never learn that they can live without a lot of things they think are necessary. It's good to lose it all at least once in your life.
Video games are a good example of a habit that can hold you back, and many are unwilling to sacrifice. I know when I spend hours playing games, I am giving up hours where I could be studying. It’s up to me to make the decision to give up what I want to do for what I should do
It’s truly about balance. You can study and play video games, you need joy AND productivity in your life! Finding a monitizable passion can increase the instances of these two overlapping, which is great. So if you REALLY hate studying I suggest you think seriously about what and why you are studying. This, among other things that Dr. Peterson talks about can be pretty brutal to hear but also helpful when you need to understand them. Even as an atheist who turned away from religion a long time ago, I like the way he uses biblical/religious references and various other stories to illustrate points and make them more relatable

Man, I was blessed today 20 years later my old Marine Unit some guys found me on facebook. Then I found 20 more, we shared numerous moments. It was motivating. I feel like I need to give up something I love to do better. Now dont give me wrong im no slack I work two jobs. But I have this bad habit of playing Video games and getting fat. From now on I will use my time wisely and give up this past time. The teaching of Cain and Abel is a little different in my opinion. In Leviticus, it’s mentioned that the first fruits were to be offered to the priests. When you read the Cain and Abel story, Abel did exactly that by giving fat portions from his first flock. Where as Cain merely gave some of his harvest and not the most valued portions. So the moral really is, if you are going to make half hearted sacrifices in order to reap reward, don’t blame anyone or anything but yourself. If you do what is right you will be accepted (rewarded). But if not, sin lies at the door and desires to have you. Cain went and killed his brother instead of realigning what sacrifices he should have done, knowing full well his sacrifice was nowhere near the value of his brother. Difference being it’s not about doing the wrong thing, it’s more so not applying full commitment to the right thing. Don’t be lukewarm, I’ll spit you out of my mouth.
From how I've always understood it, I've always seen sacrifice to mean giving up something you want in order for others to get what they want. Whether they want it in the short term or long term never seems like it matters, all that seems to matter when it comes to sacrifice is that the desires of others outweigh your own. Kinda why I'm trying to break myself away from the concept entirely. I don't have the strength to live through the shit that comes with living selflessly in a selfish world. As Slade Wilson once said: "Everyone in this life is in it for themselves".
What Jordan said at the end makes me think that the biggest sacrifice humankind can make is taking responsibility for the world we exist in and not just for ourselves.
Thing is you don't know what others have sacrificed, what others have gone through. It's best to keep your argument to what you've sacrificed, what you've given up.

Taking the responsibility of failure onto yourself is for sure a good attitude when done correctly. But for every 1 human that does that I can imagine tens or even hundreds more perpetually blaming themselves every time the desired outcome doesn't happen for them. A clarification between blame and responsibility is essential and perhaps a new word needs to be created.
Undoubtedly the word responsibility spans every emotions involved as far as the meaning overall which encompasses things like blame, shame, pride and character. The word has a depth to it that could be considered somewhat vague although it is almost the vagueness that sparks the creativity to necessarily attempt what JBP would most likely characterize as growth. Ah, yes, I love something more than my ideal future self or truth - I love my lies. Above Dr. Peterson says the exact same thing that I realized earlier this evening: I have fallen in love with my bitter lies about reality, myself, my assumed worthlessness as a human being, other people's worthlessness... When I hold tightly on these claims, I don't have to struggle. The price is living in hell, but I have become used to it. I recognize I'm in a deep pit but I don't know if I have the will to crawl up from here. My lies are so seducing, so comforting, promising me "liberating" nihilism and laziness and a permission to avoid my responsibilities. I guess my pit is not deep enough though. Otherwise I would have the courage and strength to change my life if I wanted to, right? I wish I had someone wise to talk to. There is nobody in my family or circle of acquaintances. I feel so lost and alone. Luckily I have Peterson's videos.

Total isolation can make a human experience feelings of delusion and madness. You mentioned you’re still dealing with the same struggles as you were back when you first commented 8-9 months ago. I obviously don’t know your circumstances, and I’m just a random guy on the internet, but I would ask you how is your health in general? Are you sleeping enough on a regular basis? Do you workout/exercise in some fashion regularly? Do you spend time outside in nature often? Do you have anything in your life that you look forward to doing when you wake up each day? I would start there if that’s something you feel you can improve upon. That can have an extreme impact on the way you see the world and experience life on a day to day basis in a positive way.
This is like the commandment “You shall not use the lords name in vein”. Even for atheists this is still important BECAUSE that’s like cursing fate, and there is no utility in that.
I'm not sure that sacrifice and discipline are exactly the same thing, though I believe they are very closely related. I think the difference may occur when the thing given up does not actually have value. Sure, we may want it, but it may not have value or be good for us in any way. I know this is a fine line, up for debate, and leaves plenty of examples where sacrifice and discipline are "the same thing," but I don't think they always are.
The politicians in this country need a week with Jocko, Lief & Jordan. Then at the end those three get to decide if the politician can stay in office or not.
The reason why Abel's sacrifice was acceptable to God is that the animal was God's own creation, whereas the grain and fruit of Cain's was the fruits of his own works. Thus the lamb was more valuable and showed proper humility. Also, this instance is a prophecy of Christ being sacrificed for our sins.

I believe cains sacrifice wasn't much of a sacrifice, even if he thought he worked harder for it. Abels sacrifice was more of a real sacrifice in that it produced a sweet savour of smell, as the fat of the cattle burned on the alter this pleased God more. I like how this guy expounds on the scripture he definitely hit on something good I took something from this pod cast that I didn't see before. But look into the scripture yourself to find the original text.
I think it has something to do with the symbolic power of blood in Christianity. Blood sacrifices always seem to have more weight, as if you're symbolically sacrificing of your own flesh. Or at least that's what I always got from Church when I was younger.
Sacrificing philosophically means changing not only the gas inside of a car but also changing the actual oil within the engine every time one starts the car every time. Example: “Fullmetal Alchemist”(Japanese Animated TV series) uses the philosophy of “equivalent exchange”(something of equal value must be offered in order to get 50% of nothing back in return in exchange in totality in result). Later on when true love was presented all the way at the end, the rule was changed towards an unconditional one, “How about I give you 100% of me in exchange for everything of you”, therefore love is the only purest thing on earth that is currently being poisoned due to sacrificing also being in the philosophy behind greed never disciplined as well as vigilantly minded mentally and materialism. Sacrificing used to have meant before during the caveman eras where the man would gather the food and the woman would remain home using cotton or sheep or animal hide from being preserved towards being useful for clothes, tools, dried fruit and animal protein, milk and eggs(milk probably is not vegan due towards coming from a cow’s utter that on average is slaughtered for it’s meat as well as it’s milk and potential from milk for cheese, forgive me if one is reading this and is indian, and as a solution towards avoiding using cow; why not use goats due towards goats representing Balphomet the devil towards acquiring meat, tools and instruments(cups,horns,makeshift knife spears, and arts and crafts), milk and cheese currency trade and trade items with mandatory holy by hand or by holy water like whenever making Jesus Christ wooden or wax figures blessings that hopefully have holy blessings made before making them a church or gatherings of existential faithhood or faith display after killing the or that goat), morbid external factors.

I tried to summarize what he said but to no avail. The best definition for sacrifice I could come up after listening to this video is an investment in the future, but this definition couldn’t encapsulate the situation of Cain, because if the meaning of sacrifice were what I mentioned, Cain wouldn’t have encountered God’s rejection. I am open to different people’s interpretations of this segment of the podcast and of the definition of sacrifice.
It seems to me the difference between the sacrifices of Cain and Abel wasn't left out of the text, "3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering-fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast." - Gen 4:3-5 Cain brought "some of the fruits of the soil" Abel brought "fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock" It wasn't about fruits and vegetables vs animal/blood sacrifice...it was one just grabbed a few things mindlessly and tossed it out there and the other (Abel) gave his best...it wasn't really much of a sacrifice for Cain but it was for Abel. We can live our lives like that - if this is the paradigmatic story we want to use to understand sacrifice - if someone/someone is really worth sacrificing for - don't just toss something together...be intentional and show honor by giving your best.
Cain was rejected because his sacrifice was a representation of HIS own worthiness, or in another way of saying it his own righteousness i.e. self-righteousness. Able sacrifice was the blood of an innocent lamb. That sacrifice is showing the guilty position we are in, we need a sacrifice or payment for our sins. The only price to pay for guilt is righteousness. A righteous sacrifice is like paying a debt off, a self-righteousness sacrifice is like paying a debt with an I owe you note.
I always opined that sacrifice was linked to gods and mainly goddesses linked to fertility. I mean we see a lot of that in India. Which may be in accordance to what Jordan said as he says bargaining with the future, and for humanity and all other creatures so as to say the main goal of future is reproduction
Sacrifice comes from the place of wholeness.. that you’ve managed to accept the meaningful suffering for other people to make this world a better place. Because what’s the alternative? Hedonistic lifestyle? Self-loathing pleasure. Material pursuits? No.. those things are not worth it in the long run.
Cain offered grain. God demanded a blood sacrifice. Cain didn't worship as God demanded. Abel on the other hand worshiped exactly as God demanded. And as a result he was reworded. We today will be rewarded in heaven for a life lived in service to Christ. Cain was cast out and condemned for his sin. If you do not have the blood of Christ applied too your life and sacrifice in service to him we will also be cast out and suffer eternity.
Cain's sacrifice was from his own effort.. crops (require hard work). Abel's sacrifice required no work (animals mating). Israel longed to return to Egypt (the world's way) and eat certain vegetables that required hard work. Notice that all the veggies described for Egypt are ones in which you bend over to harvest. Then look as Israel's fruits and veggies as described in contrast and they are vine hanging reach out and grab without self effort. It's a biblical theme. You are accepted by his grace not your effort.

This, among other things that Dr. Peterson talks about can be pretty brutal to hear but also helpful when you need to understand them. Even as an atheist who turned away from religion a long time ago, I like the way he uses biblical/religious references and various other stories to illustrate points and make them more relatable

Man, I was blessed today 20 years later my old Marine Unit some guys found me on facebook. Then I found 20 more, we shared numerous moments. It was motivating. I feel like I need to give up something I love to do better. Now dont give me wrong im no slack I work two jobs. But I have this bad habit of playing Video games and getting fat. From now on I will use my time wisely and give up this past time. I am buying a plane ticket to go home to see numerous family, The fact that I would even consider partying and whoremongering over seeing family is beyond me. I will. Thanks Jocko and JP. The teaching of Cain and Abel is a little different in my opinion. In Leviticus, it’s mentioned that the first fruits were to be offered to the priests. When you read the Cain and Abel story, Abel did exactly that by giving fat portions from his first flock. Where as Cain merely gave some of his harvest and not the most valued portions. So the moral really is, if you are going to make half hearted sacrifices in order to reap reward, don’t blame anyone or anything but yourself. If you do what is right you will be accepted (rewarded). But if not, sin lies at the door and desires to have you. Cain went and killed his brother instead of realigning what sacrifices he should have done, knowing full well his sacrifice was nowhere near the value of his brother. Difference being it’s not about doing the wrong thing, it’s more so not applying full commitment to the right thing. Don’t be lukewarm, I’ll spit you out of my mouth.

From how I've always understood it, I've always seen sacrifice to mean giving up something you want in order for others to get what they want. Whether they want it in the short term or long term never seems like it matters, all that seems to matter when it comes to sacrifice is that the desires of others outweigh your own.
Kinda why I'm trying to break myself away from the concept entirely. I don't have the strength to live through the shit that comes with living selflessly in a selfish world. As Slade Wilson once said: "Everyone in this life is in it for themselves".

What Jordan said at the end makes me think that the biggest sacrifice humankind can make is taking responsibility for the world we exist in and not just for ourselves.
Thing is you don't know what others have sacrificed, what others have gone through. It's best to keep your argument to what you've sacrificed, what you've given up.

Whether this man realizes it or not.. he is doing the work of Abel. The way I see it, he is working to shepherd the youth in the right direction. What ever sacrifices he gave up to make this happen, hopefully the higher power ( whatever you address it as) favors him and rewards him for his effort.

The kings of personal accountability
Taking the responsibility of failure onto yourself is for sure a good attitude when done correctly. But for every 1 human that does that I can imagine tens or even hundreds more perpetually blaming themselves every time the desired outcome doesn't happen for them.
A clarification between blame and responsibility is essential and perhaps a new word needs to be created.
Undoubtedly the word responsibility spans every emotions involved as far as the meaning overall which encompasses things like blame, shame, pride and character. The word has a depth to it that could be considered somewhat vague although it is almost the vagueness that sparks the creativity to necessarily attempt what JBP would most likely characterize as growth. Food for thought as were all used to when watching the life lessons that we’re so fortunately privy to witness m.

Ah, yes, I love something more than my ideal future self or truth - I love my lies. Above Dr. Peterson says the exact same thing that I realized earlier this evening: I have fallen in love with my bitter lies about reality, myself, my assumed worthlessness as a human being, other people's worthlessness... When I hold tightly on these claims, I don't have to struggle. The price is living in hell, but I have become used to it.
I recognize I'm in a deep pit but I don't know if I have the will to crawl up from here. My lies are so seducing, so comforting, promising me "liberating" nihilism and laziness and a permission to avoid my responsibilities.
I guess my pit is not deep enough though. Otherwise I would have the courage and strength to change my life if I wanted to, right?
I wish I had someone wise to talk to. There is nobody in my family or circle of acquaintances. I feel so lost and alone. Luckily I have Peterson's videos.

You mentioned you’re still dealing with the same struggles as you were back when you first commented 8-9 months ago. I obviously don’t know your circumstances, and I’m just a random guy on the internet, but I would ask you how is your health in general? Are you sleeping enough on a regular basis? Do you workout/exercise in some fashion regularly? Do you spend time outside in nature often? Do you have anything in your life that you look forward to doing when you wake up each day? I would start there if that’s something you feel you can improve upon. That can have an extreme impact on the way you see the world and experience life on a day to day basis in a positive way.
This is like the commandment “You shall not use the lords name in vein”. Even for atheists this is still important BECAUSE that’s like cursing fate, and there is no utility in that.

I'm not sure that sacrifice and discipline are exactly the same thing, though I believe they are very closely related.
I think the difference may occur when the thing given up does not actually have value. Sure, we may want it, but it may not have value or be good for us in any way. I know this is a fine line, up for debate, and leaves plenty of examples where sacrifice and discipline are "the same thing," but I don't think they always are.
The politicians in this country need a week with Jocko, Lief & Jordan. Then at the end those three get to decide if the politician can stay in office or not.
The reason why Abel's sacrifice was acceptable to God is that the animal was God's own creation, whereas the grain and fruit of Cain's was the fruits of his own works. Thus the lamb was more valuable and showed proper humility. Also, this instance is a prophecy of Christ being sacrificed for our sins.

I believe cains sacrifice wasn't much of a sacrifice, even if he thought he worked harder for it. Abels sacrifice was more of a real sacrifice in that it produced a sweet savour of smell, as the fat of the cattle burned on the alter this pleased God more. I like how this guy expounds on the scripture he definitely hit on something good I took something from this pod cast that I didn't see before. But look into the scripture yourself to find the original text.
I think it has something to do with the symbolic power of blood in Christianity. Blood sacrifices always seem to have more weight, as if you're symbolically sacrificing of your own flesh. Or at least that's what I always got from Church when I was younger.

Sacrificing philosophically means changing not only the gas inside of a car but also changing the actual oil within the engine every time one starts the car every time. I tried to summarize what he said but to no avail. The best definition for sacrifice I could come up after listening to this video is an investment in the future, but this definition couldn’t encapsulate the situation of Cain, because if the meaning of sacrifice were what I mentioned, Cain wouldn’t have encountered God’s rejection.
I am open to different people’s interpretations of this segment of the podcast and of the definition of sacrifice.

It wasn't about fruits and vegetables vs animal/blood sacrifice...it was one just grabbed a few things mindlessly and tossed it out there and the other (Abel) gave his best...it wasn't really much of a sacrifice for Cain but it was for Abel.
We can live our lives like that - if this is the paradigmatic story we want to use to understand sacrifice - if someone/someone is really worth sacrificing for - don't just toss something together...be intentional and show honor by giving your best.

Cain was rejected because his sacrifice was a representation of HIS own worthiness, or in another way of saying it his own righteousness i.e. self-righteousness. Able sacrifice was the blood of an innocent lamb. That sacrifice is showing the guilty position we are in, we need a sacrifice or payment for our sins. The only price to pay for guilt is righteousness. A righteous sacrifice is like paying a debt off, a self-righteousness sacrifice is like paying a debt with an I owe you note.

Abel's sacrifice required no work (animals mating).
Israel longed to return to Egypt (the world's way) and eat certain vegetables that required hard work. Notice that all the veggies described for Egypt are ones in which you bend over to harvest. Then look as Israel's fruits and veggies as described in contrast and they are vine hanging reach out and grab without self effort.
It's a biblical theme. You are accepted by his grace not your effort.
