"Don't get caught up in things that don't matter." says Jocko, waving a knife around.
"Avoid becoming resentful when you don't get exactly what you want." says Jocko, waving around a decommissioned revolver. "Use it as a chance to grow."
"Try to discipline yourself." says the retired Navy SEAL, brandishing a musket at nobody in particular.
"Forget about the mistake you made in the past!" screams Jocko. His arms are flailing around like wacky inflatable tubepeople. Both arms have RPG's strapped to them. Echo Charles is in the corner, sobbing.

Very interesting thoughts from Keith Douglas. I completely agree w the detachment of emotions to accomplish certain tasks. Thanks Jocko for this!!!
Also I mentioned this before in a comment. Thanks for NOT CUSSING. I listen to many of your podcasts in the morning w my daughter(11) who understands these concepts of life to live by. It helps. Those voices in the ears of kids from people who aren’t their parents and from someone such as yourself make a huge impact. It enforces the lessons that are taught at home and I GREATLY appreciate all you do. -and my 6 yr old daughter absolutely loves “Way of the Warrior Kid.” Both books

If you all are more interested in this way of thinking, look into the philosophy called Stoicism. A lot of what Jocko talks about reflects a lot of this way of thinking. There are audiobooks on TH-cam that are books by Stoics such as Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, etc.

An excellent point! I recently started reading an English translation of Marcus Aurelius meditations and it truly made me consider things in a different manner in regards to goals, distractions and achievement, not reacting emotionally etc. Granted it was a translation so unsure of how accurate it is but it made a lot of sense.

Some people dont understand, some people I try to help to a point of embracing this ideology and some, look at me like I am crazy or not "normal". Can't win them all. I know it's allowed me to take better control of my life in all aspects. No regrets.

Holy shit, him holding the knife is a metaphor. Looking at the knife, laughing at the image of him swinging it around to really drive home a point (pun intended), is distracting you from listening to what he's saying "what actually matters". If you didn't watch the whole thing and learn to ignore the life then you're not practicing what he's talking about.

If you catch a game here and there to unwind that’s fine! It’s those people who religiously follow sports. A) it’s a game and B) you aren’t even the one playing.. focus on your life and your responsibilities

True. Detaching emotionally from Randy Orton and his fans and his marriage to Kim Kessler will help me. Even though it will take disipline for me to do it. I know it's worth doing. To borrow a saying from Jocko Willink, " GOOD!"
Because detaching from the negative aspects of things is important and worth doing. Not detaching from that will cause me to get severely triggered and land in jail, prison or a psych ward. Not cool. Better to improve myself first. Then focus on what really matters. Because Randy Orton is not doing that. I have to focus on what really matters. Improving. That's what matters. Not getting emotional about Randy Orton or myself unless I do so in a positive way.

I suppose there is a method to a madness. Those who get picky about stupid sht at work are usually conformist a$$ kissers without a life, single minded about creating and thus controlling conflict as a means of leverage and negotiation. As a pick up artist once said, yes, you might be bad at haggling over a car price with a dealership, but your degree of empathy for others and appreciation of quality of life and respect for others are great benefits too for mental health and being good family with people that are important - even if it goes in the way of needing to be a cold cocking negotiator at time squeezing the most dollars than the other. There is a price and a risk to pay in either behavior, the latter behavior can still be reasonably good at negotiating but not to the point of causing acrimony over pennies and to be so compulsive as to alienate people who care for you equally with people who do not. Good team work and leadership would find extreme value on those good team members who are needed in dire situation and who would not use that situation to short sightedly haggle with other team members to the death, literally. The coward without a life is a judas to be watched and known by all.

Love when he's holding a blade. It has to make Charles nervous sometimes lol : edit: I always wait for him to stab the table

Easier said than done. In some sense you don't get to decide what matters... You just have to try to find out why it matters to you.

Once you have goal(s) in your life and you know what is good for you, you know what matters.

This is 100% dead on but I work in a hospital and those small things that may not matter, might be the difference in saving a life or losing a patient. I think a better way of thinking is instead of "what matters" is "triage all that matters". I've had the smallest symptom define the entire disease.
