  • The original Rainhill Trials took place in October 1829. The Trials were to assess and award to the winner of the the locomotive that won, the contract to provide the first passenger carrying train on the then nearly completed Manchester and Liverpool Railway Line.
150 years later under the direction of the now defunct British Rail, modern replicas of the three main contenders in the Trials were built by apprentices at various locations, including the yards where the originals were built. As back in 1829 the modern replicas were built with just as much passion and competition.
The story that follows is Fred’s, Roger’s and Alan’s visit to the event that was known as Rocket 150.
The BBC have archived some superb footage of both the Rocket 150, introduced by Brian Redhead and also the lead up to the event giving a detailed account of how and where the replicas were built. They are part of the Steam Railways Collection.

I liked the story but didn't like the idea of Fred throwing up over the Mayor of some where. I understand Fred hoped he wasn't the Mayor of Bolton or he be in big trouble. I understand Fred had a ride the replica of Rocket in his tv series.

she actually looks a little like her great-Great Grand father Timothy Hackworth.
I understand that his engine was far from being un serviceable as I understand that he had brought a spare cylinder block from Darlington with him but for some reason the judges wouldn't let him fit it in place of the broken one
