Had a bit of a varied life, once having a steam traction engine, hence meeting Fred Dibnah. The friendship developed and when making a beer commercial I realised that he was the ideal character to feature the "Right Said Fred" campaign.
Over the years there were many hilarious incidents with Fred, which I have been asked to relate in some of these videos. Hope you enjoy them!

Rainhill Trials
The original Rainhill Trials took place in October 1829. The Trials were to assess and award to the winner of the the locomotive that won, the contract to provide the first passenger carrying train on the then nearly completed Manchester and Liverpool Railway Line.
150 years later under the direction of the now defunct British Rail, modern replicas of the three main contenders in the Trials were built by apprentices at various locations, including the yards where the originals were built. As back in 1829 the modern replicas were built with just as much passion and competition.
The story that follows is Fred’s, Roger’s and Alan’s visit to the event that was known as Rocket 150.
The BBC have archived some superb footage of both the Rocket 150, introduced by Brian Redhead and also the lead up to the event giving a detailed account of how and where the replicas were built. They are part of the Steam Railways Collection.

The James Jackson Grundy is a grain carrying vessel that operates between Liverpool Docks and Frodsham, via the River Mersey, the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Weaver Navigation. Come and join the crew..................! The Panary joins the JJ Grundy for the trip.
Let me give you a bit of advice, cock!

Roger Murray Reminisces. The famous ballooning story, told as only Roger can tell it!
The days before heat and safety! Great tale.🤣😂🤣
Just scary listening to that experience 😮
Good man Roger. A great first hand account of the character Dibnah was. Well told!
I can see way Fred gave him that useful bit of advice about driving a steam engine its bad to build up more steam pressure than you need
I understand that many years later Fred drove the working replica of the Rocket
I love your honesty
it's his steam engine, gov! is what I understand what Fred said when a police car got covered in soot as well. he let his pal get all the blame for the mess they had ended up making.
they possibly got a bad batch of coal on the day maybe? "we better put some water in your pond Love, or you will be having them for tea! I have read the story in a magazine possibly Old Glory.
the boiler won't blow up or anything like that will she? I find what the Lady's Husband asked Fred to be very interesting given what ended up happening with the model steam engine
Poor ol Fred... doing a technicolor yawn all over the mayor.... Did ya like that ?
I liked the story but didn't like the idea of Fred throwing up over the Mayor of some where. I understand Fred hoped he wasn't the Mayor of Bolton or he be in big trouble. I understand Fred had a ride the replica of Rocket in his tv series.
who ever it was he would have needed to have a wash.
Had me laughing from start to finish... thank you for this excellent tale... "Did you like that" ? ...you bet I did!!!
😄
Is it snowing in that room Roger?
The way he describes his experience is so funny. Straight from the heart. 🙏
Roger - I hope you remain in good health. I was a friend of Ailsas when we were 16. Helped you put the traction engine together in the car park at Rands and chased a couple of Greehhall ? balloons, one taking out a dry stone wall. Moved darn sarf as you ventured into canal boating. Fond memories as a passenger in your 7 series BMW down the lanes (cant remember name) past the sewage works, bouncing off the grassy 'curbs' to keep the car on the road on the way to Rands. Many a pint of Robinsons with Fred and yourself in The Rodney. Good days.... Best Regards - Peter
Brilliant 😂
That's a gifted story teller. But he did have some great material to work with lol....And he lived to tell about it.
1:38 is so genius!
you sir have the balls of a grand national winner
Fred Dibnah could have held a loaded gun against my head and I still wouldn't have climbed up the chimney.
I miss my fathers story telling,he would always look to my mother to verify his yarns lol. Some were true, most were lies,All was Love,I miss him so much.
Why did building regs change id love to ladder a chimney
Who does the drawings, they are wonderful.👍🏼👍🏼Looked it up.What a talent...
"Really and truly the most frightening thing I've ever done.. thanks to Fred Dibnah."
i actually just watched a video of fred telling this story at a meeting said he was green up the top, also something about how the towers swaying made him more greener and spent good 5 mins laying on planks before he stood up.
very brave man the overhang sounded terrifiying .
I love climbing. Me and one other kid out of our little gang of eight use to climb up the coal towers. We were 10 years old at the time. Towers were about 10 or 12 story's high with a huge beam going all the way across the top on some type of A frame.Walking the plank we called it. We were always climbing things that would scare the hell out of most people. No sense of fear. Or just no sense. Call it what you want. But we had so much fun.
I used to walk around on structural steel never using any type of safety harness but somehow just listening to this guy he started making me scared of heights.......LOL
Be a man my gender would have changed on the spot sorry to say haha
great story
Awesome story.
... better than going up with Frank Spencer, but you did it...👍🍻🤭
And then you’ve got to go back down. Ffs. And back over the overhang.
“I’m sure we went through a climate change” 😂
Brave man 😳😬😂
Back in the late 60's, I repaired "Aircraft Warning Lights" (Highest point on a ship) while underway, a couple times and really enjoyed it, BUT I COULD NOT DO what Roger just described ... just going up 15 - 18 feet on a ladder trimming some trees gets me now. THAT was a hell of a story...
My heart was pumping just listening to the story. Steeplejacks really are a different breed
Mate, I don't know how you did that .. I start to freeze up at about the 10 foot mark
Roger mate, you are a natural story teller. You can just see Fred in full yellow gear. With his bloody great boots on.
You cracked me up with this story, thanks for sharing.
😄 buttons off the shirt🤣🤣 Im accidentally shaking the thought of it🥶🥶🤢 Fred was the man 🍺 🚬🚬
They should have filmed it ! Would you mind doing it again so they can ?
Well Sir, you were a Man. I would have been a mouse 😂
My hands sweat thinking about your great story .
Bollocks of titanium fine sir...
Thanks, Roger 🤝
Just brilliant
Well done! I remember watching his series and feeling sick and I'm an ex-Para lol
Not many people alive have experienced that. What a legend.🙄
Great story.I was gripping the arm chair just listing.Thank you for posting. RIP Fred
