    As a helpful tip for a canvas with an ugly indention or loose (not drum tight) - If the canvas is new: Spray water or use a wet rag on the back and front of the canvas by getting it damp, then air dry. It should tighten up really well. If the canvas is painted: only do this on the back side and it should tighten up the canvas without having to manually do all the work to tighten. Never had a problem doing this and works well - Cheers! I learned this from the late Leonid Afremov.

    That was a great tutorial, thanks. As a beginner artist at the age of 55, this info was more than a lot for me. I got a bunch of canvas pallets as those were cheap and now I am practicing on those. sometimes its frustrating when the results are not even close to the actual scenery, but I still aim to get better by the help of such great artists like you. Thanks much

    Great little tutorial, thank you for taking the time to make this. Just an FYI as a beginner myself I reuse canvasses by removing old paint with thinner (odourless) and/or scrapping off. This saves money and great for practice on a budget. Cheers.

      @Wild4  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do the same all the time. If I am not happy with what I was painting or I was just goofing around and practicing. I will scrape the paint off and re-use it at a later point. :) Frugal Painter = Happy Painter 💪

    Nice to know about canvasses! Cheaper ones are not the best, but affordable! Instead of gesso, I either use a white primer or just white interior paint from Hardware Store to coat canvas...save even more money and makes a nice surface to work on! Two coats work great!

    This was very very helpful and I’m thankful. I’m interested in learning like the fluid art pours and paints of that nature. I always wondered why most artists work after pouring the paint on and leaving it, would dry and it looks soooo fabulous on the canvas. Makes so much sense that there are levels! New sub 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.

    I've been using canvas boards. 12x16 since they were 60% off at hobby lobby. I didn't apply any gesso on my first canvas board and the paint didn't blend well at all, even with the liquid white on there. Gesso is so wonderful!

    I assumed I should avoid Michael’s since it’s a big box store but just looked at their prices and you’re totally right, they have the best deal if you buy the pro packs and have a coupon - only thing is that sometimes the coupon says it’s valid on anything but there is sometimes fine print that says it can’t be used on certain things (usually the thing I came in to buy)

    Am a brand new painter, actually haven’t formally done one... just practicing, however, I tried your suggestions for tinting the white gesso with a drop of black gesso and put a gray coating on several canvases. Also, I gessoed (is that a word?) several varied sized canvases and did it with a foam roller. Worked well and only took me about 10 minutes. Now I am ready to go after a little more practice on cardboard!!!! 😅

    If you find your less-expensive canvases are stretched or sagging, just flip them over and spray the backside with a light mist of tapwater, let it dry and you will have a drum-skin-tight surface on the other side. Easy Peezy.

    Thank you for this super amazing video and the valuable information you gave. I just have a question; what do you think of the Daler Rowney canvas?! Some friends asked me to use them and since then I never changed... more than 8 years.... cause it’s always available and not that expensive. I just feel that I can’t give the small details on them easily! So what do you think ? Waiting for your advice, please! Thanks again and have a great day!

    • @Wild4
      @Wild4  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest I dont think I have used that brand yet. Most canvases are generally the same.... They are all made from the same materials (wood, cotton, staples, gesso, etc). The only really difference would be the quality overall. If you like that brand and it works with-in your budget.... I say, stick with it. I hope that helped

    So I went to your video because I was wondering if I bought a decent canvas. Anyways, I bought 3 level 3 24x24’s and 3 level 3 30x40’s noticed that my 24 x 24’s do not have any cross braces. The wood is literally just around the edges and they are one and a half. Do I need to add extra to it if I’m doing texture art?

    • @Wild4

      It depends on the wood - some you can paint right on top of and some you will have to gesso coat

    Thank you so much for this information. I’m new to art and what I have learned so far is to gesso my inexpensive canvases and also before that to spray distilled water in them and let them dry to tighten them up. I do need to know what does it mean when it says on the back of the canvas label, 15oz primed/10oz unprimed?

    • @Wild4

      If you are just starting out - what ever is at a fair price will be fine.... Your first works will be a mess. As you start to grow and improve invest into better canvases. Grain doesn't matter, since you will be adding gesso or a base coat

      Gesso is (supposed to be) a blend of acrylic paint, glue, and a ground or filler like chalk. It is used to seal the canvas so the paint isn't sucked into the surface. Like a primer for drywall in house painting. Primer or gesso sticks to and seals the surface and the paint goes on top.
