The more I learn about the lead Nam Yoonsu the more I love him. His whole "fuck the haters" attitude when it comes to the show's backlash, the fact that he passed on several other big projects waiting for this one to get greenlit bc he wanted it so much, him supposedly making Goyeong's mannerisms and such more gay than what was in the script, ffs he even donated a kidney to his dad earlier this year. I know there's always a lot of talk about representation in bl amongst international fans, but also knowing that it likely wouldn't be possible for an out actor to really survive in the current Korean film/tv industry, I think what we should be asking for are empathetic, outspoken allies rather than trying to know who they bang off camera. And I don't think we could really ask for a better fit for that than Yoonsu.
I was a fan of his acting since Beyond Evil and my respect for him has grown exponentially this past year. The way he has handled this project with such a good head on his shoulders and such grace is admirable. His comment section on Instagram was a pit of hell during teaser releases but his unbothered attitude was the best response to homophobes and haters. What a beautiful guy, inside and out.
I think part of why the Mi Ae police station scene was included was because it adds to painting a picture of the misogyny and sexism she faces. She's being held responsible for reacting to a man sexually harassing/assaulting her whilst his actions are being ignored, all because she dared to be aggressive in her response and is drunk, which in the establishment's eyes negates her victim hood. This all adds to the portrayal of her friendship with Yeong as it shows them as both being oppressed by the same heteronormative patriarchy.
I think w/ the whole Miae getting arrested thing, given how drunk she was and the narration saying she cut ties w/ her parents after that night, what we're supposed to assume is that she went to talk to her mom but it went really badly so she got wasted at a club afterwards to drown her sorrows, then ended up being a beligerant drunk who tried to beat down a creeper that she might have otherwise ignored bc she had a lot of steam to let off. Or at least that was my interpretation, but I kinda only came to that after the 2nd watch.
To me, the biggest difference so far between the show and the book is how hot and popular in a sense Go Young is. The actor is terrific and I appreciate that he interprets the character as a gay man, instead of just making him "like everyone else" or palatable to straight audiences or something. That said, a story about the love life of a misanthropic average looking writer is very different than telling a love story about the most attractive guy at the club, if you know what I'm saying. How different the show would have been if they'd cast a queer comedic writer-actor, someone like Korea's equivalent to a Bowan Yang. But I doubt this show would have attained the success and audience that it has without Go Young's actor, who again is just fantastic in the role. And this story has way more to explore than just the way its protagonist grapples with self-esteem and desirability.
Love In The Big City is exceptional. I sobbed my eyes out over so many scenes; laughed at other scenes. Nam Yoon is brilliant and absolutely shines. I also love Jin Hon Un, who you have not seen yet.
Saw clip of Nam Yoonsu saying in an interview that the grocery scene was alot of bts video of them just playing around between takes and they kept it in
im so happy you guys started watching it~~ the series starts really light and fun but youre definitely gonna cry at the end, it gets deeper and deeper every episode
I just came from the last recap of itsay and it’s so funny that after you said how you wanted to watch something light and fun THIS is your next bl! lol! what a masterpiece 🙏🏻
just some info that may be good to note! the story in the book is told in 4 parts. the show has 8 episodes, so every 2 episodes cover one part of the book!
You guys's Love in The Big City recap was already in my notification and I was like "OH GOSH THEY'RE WATCHING IT" I am super duper happy and excited because like you guys are my comfort content creators currently(thank you for existing, you guys are awesome), and you guys covered all these BLs that are in my top list...The Eighth Sense, ITSAY and...well Love in The Big City(a BL but also not BL) I initially wanted to wait to binge the recaps until you guys finished all of the episodes, but seeing it again in my notif today...nope I couldn't handle it I gotta watch it now 😭
did you guys get his man 3 flashbacks with the couple rings? young looks so much like hanmin (and a little dkz/semantic error jaechan) that i can't unsee it
Girl, don't get me started on the whole Artist/Muse discussion, or I'd have a whole Ted Talk about it. 😆 Ask hard enough and I'll show you the short film I made with a college fling. 😜
I just watched the first 3 eps last night and so happy to see this upload 🎉 and totally loved the way this started. The lead is a blast and I'm def in for the rollercoaster that this ride will be 💙
I binged the first four episodes the day it came out, haven't watched anymore since because of how much I cried from episode 2😅 but I'll definitely pick it up again cause ya'll are watching it.
Since y'all brought it up. I don't think it matters if the show is a BL or not. To me, a BL needs a couple that the story revolves around or multiple couples...like you said regarding Only Friends. This isn't that. It's about a singular man and the friends he keeps and the men he sleeps with.
I read the book first and don't think of it as a BL simply because BL to me is ROMANCE. and this is not a romance. It is about romance, but it is not A Romance.
Thank you for watching LITBC! Love you both! 🫶🏼I def. have so much more respect & admiration for Nam Yoon Su in his acting & mindset. His reaction to the haters out there just made me adore him more! 🤗 Yoon Su’s attitude in this project is commendable & creates possibly a ground breaking drama for Korean culture. This is the 1st of a BL kdrama to have huge financial support to create great cinematography, 4 directors for an 8 episode series, & a popular young actor in mainstream kdramas along with other established actors! LITBC def. is not your stereotypical BL. The story that unfolds through great acting & directing evokes so many raw human emotions. You laugh, cry, get mad, cheer the characters on, be heartbroken, etc. This drama conveys realistic honest moments for all type of relationship/love, social issues & life struggles. 🥺*Be prepared to shed a lot of tears & be more engrossed with story & characters! I’m a huge kdrama fan for yrs & honestly watched only a few BL ones. LITBC is so so good. One of the kdramas that created these type of emotions to me is My Mister, which is it’s own masterpiece! ❤️ I really didn’t think another drama would resonate in a similar & raw emotional manner as My Mister. But LITBC hits you in a special way all the way through to the last episode. I cannot say enough Yoon Su acting is incredible in this drama! All the actors were amazing! 👏🏼 The star studded cast, directors & author have so much love & pride in this drama as they should! ❤️ I hope this drama receives all the accolades & positive attention it deserves! 🥹 LITBC is simply an impressive drama! 👏🏼

Nam Yoonsu has my respect 10000%. That man went in and was like I will take this role and I'm putting all my chest in it!
absolutely obsessed with the term "straight bl" and immediately knew exactly what it is
I think w/ the whole Miae getting arrested thing, given how drunk she was and the narration saying she cut ties w/ her parents after that night, what we're supposed to assume is that she went to talk to her mom but it went really badly so she got wasted at a club afterwards to drown her sorrows, then ended up being a beligerant drunk who tried to beat down a creeper that she might have otherwise ignored bc she had a lot of steam to let off. am i the only one who gets taerae vibes from yeong. like nam yoonsu and taerae have the same voice but the mannerisms... very similar and i love it

I don't usually watch recaps, but I'm glad i decided to watch for this show. Thank you for talking about it🙇
I literally said after the title sequence and first episode, it was literally gay Sex in the City!
I binged the WHOLE thing last night and it was so good and.complex but I literally have no one to talk about this with 😭
so excited for this one, absolutely LOVED this series💗
did you guys get his man 3 flashbacks with the couple rings? young looks so much like hanmin (and a little dkz/semantic error jaechan) that i can't unsee it
A good opportunity for a series is for yoonsu and jaechan to be brothers two actors who made a wonderful impact in the kbl scene
