Dude this channel is like a dream come true for a music producer, seriously. I know beatmaking channels, mixing tips, recording technics, music interviews… but all in one? Nah, only you. Keep doing this!!!!
Thanks dude! Yeah I really try and make it more like a video essay, which is the content I love on TH-cam, sometimes music creators end up filming their DAWs too much imo lol
@@AudioHaze Totally, feels like there is a lot of 'look, plugin!' in music production content. Equally its not fun when people film videos about music production without any technical details.
I love the professional mixing/mastering engineer that polished the famous Bon Iver album still gives interviews with the SM57 pointing away from his mouth
Probably my fault! I should have had us monitor or something like that, when the cameras on you lots of practices leave your brain and you're kinda just worried about delivering a good interview
It was really cool of you to shout out Nick's services. It's crazy how many people like him have been a part of incredible records but don't necessarily see a significant surge in clients or prestige despite that. Glad to see he's still maintaining his practice - I hope this nets him a lot of new projects!
Dude Nick was so cool! We all went out for coffee after and he showed me the local venue, he's a grade A fantastic person he deserves every project he can get his hands on
Bro - The videos just keep getting better and better! This is incredible and exactly what TH-cam was made for; someone who's passionate going this deep on a specific topic! We are all lucky to have you making this stuff. Keep up the amazing work Ricky!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how these videos validates a lot of what I do in terms of remove some guilt with imperfections and encourages me to experiment with more freedom.

DAMN, this is one phenomenal video. Part documentary, part production how-to/lesson, and part song craft tutorial. So well done my friend! Can't wait for the next one!
From someone who has wanted to record an acoustic folk-rock album for the last 20 years and only now is just barely figuring out how to use a DAW, this video is gold upon gold. Thank you so much for making these, for explaining things, for unpicking and demystifying a process by recreating it-I appreciate it's not a 100% recreation but man oh man, it's real fucking good!

Hey man! Huge Bon Iver fan (and huge fan of this channel also@!) here! I LOVE everything you did on both videos you made about this record. Gave me so much good insights for my own recording process. I'd like to know, some day in the future, your takes on 22, a million and i,i, since they are almost a completely different kind of Bon Iver from Perth and For Emma. Thanks for the amazing job and much love from Brazil!
This video is the kind of content of the future. Although I came in to hopefully learn something new for music production, I genuinely am in awe with the overall video production. Hahaha thought that crazy hair fit the vibe lol Glad I could help you learn my friend! Hopefully it ties the gear element into the creative part of production
That’s actually genius. Imagine 6 different version of yourself singing at the same time in the same room, but at different spots around the mic. I never thought about it that way until I saw your visual. Neat recording trick. Might have to try out different patterns. VERY cool.
Ricky, I love your videos so much. You are so good at putting these together, and i get so much from the deep dives and interviews that you do. Keep up the good work, man 👨❤💋👨
Your videos are very impactful to me as an aspiring audio engineer. The amount of detail is absurd with literally no one else willing to give away the knowledge you do. Thank you so much for creating and sharing the work you do.
Thank you so much for this video. Had the song stuck in my head since I saw on Instagram that you're making this video. All this is gold. My two main takeaways: 1) embrace the imperfections 2) keep it simple in the mixing/recording!
Absolutely! Definitely with the mixing, I tried really hard to ge the sound right at the source this time around and work minimally in the software, a lesson learned from the one and only Garth Richardson
Man, you're definitely making history. I mean even a lot of bigger channels don't have this quality of ... everything. The plot of the vide, the details I did not hear about, the musical focus of it all really does inspire and I can mention a thousand more things. But I'll just say Thank you for what you're doing.
And thank you for watching my friend! That all means so much, support from your end is the other half of the coin, and I'm thankful for such an amazing audience
I've been a Bon Iver superfan from the very beginning and I've listened to and played his music myself more than probably most other fans and your chorus sounds sooo close to the original on the "only love is all maroon", it's uncanny! Kudos dude!
I loved your Phoebe Bridgers video when you first released. And to my surprise, I wasn’t subscribed. So you just got one today. BI is easily my favorite band on this planet. And to see this incredible analysis of the production process is awesome. Seeing videos like this gives me more confidence in my own production and composition skills. Great work! Great video, Justin Vernon never felt forced trying to make something new and different, his music feels genuine. To me that is a really important point.
I had to wait until this weekend to finish the video because of work! But, man was it worth the wait. Thank you so much, this was an amazing video and I loved how you mentioned embracing the imperfections of our recordings. I guess a perfect recording is the least perfect of them all. And yes, the video absolutely delivered!!
I love how these videos make me appreciate and fall in love with the songs that are being recreated so much more. The dedication to getting it right makes the recreation so amazing. Gave me shivers listening to the song.
I didn't realize you were from Carrboro. I grew up in Durham, NC, and have been living here again since 2020. I was in Carrboro seeing a show just the other night. I always feel a kinship to musicians from this area. Playing at Chapel Hill and Carrboro venues in the '90s, which most people will say was the peak era for the local scene, was such a big part of my teenage experience. Amazing video, btw. It went so much deeper and told so much more of an interesting narrative of discovery than I was ever expecting.
I’ve been with you since your college mic review days (which I did enjoy). I remember you feeling like it was a big risk to change up your content , but honestly this is pure gold! I’m so happy you took that risk. So much of TH-cam is product focused, but this is so much more valuable for me. Love it ❤️. Hope you’re still enjoying it too! I am so incredibly inspired by your breakdown and deep dive into this video! You have fundamentally shaped the way I record music now, thank you for sharing you passion, gifts, and insights💕
Man your channel is honestly a treasure for every music producer down in this world. The passion you put on those and the way you present your journey in the searching of a sound you love is fantastic and so inspiring. Thanks you so much !
Really inspiring for this non-technical singer-songwriter, still working on the bedroom studio debut album at the age of 61. 😂 I console myself that even with my ancient version of Logic Pro, I have a thousand times more ‘kit’ than the Beatles had to make Sgt Pepper’s. And this ‘keep it simple’ attitude that applies IMHO to almost every aspect of life, just confirms what I believe. Write good songs, press record, get someone else who actually knows what they’re doing the mix and master it. Release. 🤷🏻♂️
Those first 2 minutes show the extreme depth that this DOCUMENTARY (it’s got to be considered that) is about to go into. As a Bon Iver fan and a fellow musician and engineer finding inspiration from JV since ‘08 - wow, respect. Purely amazing work here!
Just wanted to say that even though your channel is not the most exuberant one, it’s one of my favorites. Always super thrilled when you release a video. What a pleasure to have long, in depth videos where you take time to dive deep into what makes the sound of an artist, while still keeping this slow, chill vibe, it’s always a great moment to watch them. I really like that you don’t say « oh no gear isn’t important », in front of 15000$ worth of equipment, but embrace the 57’drumstick aesthetic, or the handheld mics on the interview. I always come back to your channel, to me one of the most interesting and inspiring ! Take care !
one of the best videos i've seen in a long time in terms of actually getting in the intricate details, down to the type of guitar, exact plugins and vocal stacks, super cool
There's nothing more inspiring than seeing another musician/producer showing and teaching about what they are passionate about. Watching this video at 6 am got me inspired to try recording my music after a tough week. Thanks ❤❤❤

Release. 🤷🏻♂️
Been a minute since a video like this locked me in - Excellent work!
Amazing video, Someone give this man a TV show already!
Those first 2 minutes show the extreme depth that this DOCUMENTARY (it’s got to be considered that) is about to go into.
As a Bon Iver fan and a fellow musician and engineer finding inspiration from JV since ‘08 - wow, respect. Purely amazing work here!
This ranks among the best, and most informative/inspiring videos I've seen on TH-cam. You've done fantastic work here - Thank you!
such a great video. Thanks
This is the most precious video since the beginning of youtube. Couldn't thank you more!! Love it is too weak an expression. Thank you!
Amazing video. Been a fan of yours for a while, im a NY born, Montreal based musician and I am excited to put these concepts in my music. Good work !
Take care !
You recording the drums is what made me subscribe to this channel. Loved this video.
Dude you're a legend way to go with the sponser and what a beautiful personal note to it about returning home .
another brilliantly amazing video - the cover has me crying at the end 😭
one of the best videos i've seen in a long time in terms of actually getting in the intricate details, down to the type of guitar, exact plugins and vocal stacks, super cool
There's nothing more inspiring than seeing another musician/producer showing and teaching about what they are passionate about. Watching this video at 6 am got me inspired to try recording my music after a tough week. Thanks ❤❤❤
