I just passed my FAA written with a 95% and didn’t use any online ground school…except your free videos lol no joke . Just this and practice tests over and over . Love your videos !!
@@trist7563 early on just the FAA practice questions and the kings free sample questions. Then when it was a couple weeks out from my exam I used the ASA app to get more serious as I was told they have up to date samples
@@trist7563 I got the same score and used Sporty's. The questions are not 100% the same but if you are consistently getting a 90+% on the practice exams and understand the material you'll get a decent score on the exam.
MC-130 CSO here, going for my PPL. Your videos are beyond exceptional. Thanks to them, scored a 89% on my written, and am using them to prep for my check. Thanks for thr hard work.
Thank you so much! Super cool! I flew with the guard up here in Alaska a couple weeks ago on an HC-130. My first experience flying with a CSO. It was a cool dynamic.
As always... a great vid, and even for experienced pilots... it's a good refresher. FYI... the airport I normally fly from has a closed runway, but they turned it into a big taxiway. If you look at KJST, it's now taxiway G.
Hey Josh! Thank you so much for making these high quality and comprehensive ground school videos. I passed my private checkride a couple months ago and your channel basically got me through it. The way you explain content just clicks with me. I felt more than prepared for my oral and owe you a massive thanks! When is the instrument ground series coming?? 😂 Take care, you’re the man!
Turn right for 18 ? If I taxi to the end of the runway and turn around to take off, I'll have the runway markings 36 under me. Doesn't that mean I'm taking off in the 360 heading ? Shouldn't I have 18 underneath me ? Which means I would have to turn left instead ?
Ideally, you never want to have runway behind you on a takeoff, BUT the point of this is to determine which runway is left and which in is right. You can still see this sign when there is 8,000 feet left on 18. In this case, that won’t matter too much in a Cessna 172
Could have phrased it better, but he meant you’d be taking off to the right; meaning “facing” that direction. If you were given an intersection take off, you’d turn right and go. If you wanted a full-length departure, you’d turn left, taxi to the threshold, u-turn, then take off with 18 underneath you.
So awesome! Thank you! Please tell me you know someone up in Alaska. I’m thinking about trying to go fly for the 176th. If so, it’d be cool if you PMd me on Facebook or Instagram. I have issues replying to a reply, so conversations are best had on another venue
Hello Josh, Thank you so much for these awesome videos , i just passed my private pilot checkride today !!!!!!!🎉 This playlist has helped me so much, so once again thank you for all the free information you put out there for new people studying for their private pilot test.
Been looking forward to the last few videos for your PPL series. Thanks for all the work that goes into them! I really enjoy your teaching style and learn a lot better from these videos.
My airport tends to give taxi clearance on the roll so I’m reeeeally glad you mentioned stopping once clear and telling the tower then waiting for further instructions.
wow, i just started taking notes on all this stuff as i start my aviation journey, im currently on the lesson about class B airspace’s, i saw the first video was posted 3 years ago. i think its awesome youre still putting out free pilot tips to this day. im trying to take notes for every video of this series and complete them before ground school starts next month, thanks for this !!
Josh is out here doing god’s work. 😂 Thank you so much! Currently your videos are helping me get better at Microsoft flight simulator but if all goes according to plan I’ll be beginning flight training within the next year or so.
Hey Josh, I passed my Written last week and wanted to thank you again for your videos, they've helped me a lot. Starting my flight training soon, all the best!
@FreePilotTraining I really have learned a lot from your content! Thank you for sharing. I was watching your 3 Tips to Improve...WITHOUT Flying! video and you covered your brain freeze aids in great detail. Would you be willing to share or sell those?
Just the other day I cleared the runway and waited an excessive amount of time for tower. I finally just switched to ground for taxi instructions. Should I have just contacted/stayed with tower instead? Thanks for the videos!
In that case: I would have “pimped” the tower. I would make a call similar to what you would to ground. “Tower, N3148x clear at Delta.” At that point, they’ll either switch you, OR they’ll give you the taxi clearance. Often, they are the same controller
Hey, great video! I'm looking to invest in a flight simulator that covers PPL instrument, commercial multi-engine, and has the capability for future needs like airliner training. Any recommendations for a versatile simulator that covers all bases? Thanks!
Displaced Threshold - can VFR aircraft land on it if pilot accepts obstacle clearance responsibility? For IFR yes I know pilot cannot land on Displaced Threshold because the 3 degree glide slope to the displacement does not provide obstacle clearance.
Is anyone going to throw you in prison over it? Probably not, but technically you shouldn’t land there. For larger aircraft, the zone is often not stressed for the higher loads either
So I've completed the course, but don't I need a certificate to be able to sit for the FAA written test? Can I get that from you or somewhere else online for free, or am I going to have to do this all over again at a FBO ground school?
Any CFI or ground instructor can endorse you once you show them that you are ready to take the exam. I will offer an endorsement at some point. Im just not quite set up to do that yet
I think I may be confused about something. I was under impression that the "dirty D" meant the airport had declared distances. Will a field with declared distances always have a displaced threshold and, conversely, will a field with a displaced threshold always have declared distances? Or is it possible to find one without the other?
You are correct. The Dirty D will always be present IF there is a displaced threshold. However, you can have a dirty d without a displaced threshold for other reasons (ie. overruns, conjoined taxiways, etc). The figure 8 is the symbol for a displaced threshold. The “D” just alerts you to an issue with runway length
Josh, been enjoying the ground course, but how does one get an endorsement to take the written/knowledge test ? (I’m under the impression that it’s required)
The cheapest way is to have a CFI sign you off. Once I complete my last video, I'm going to start working on an app for everyone. Hopefully I can start working on that soon.

Congratulations! I love getting comments like this! It might be a bit before I can start pushing out instrument videos
Also the new lighting for bigger airports that are basically stop signs controlled by the tower are a vast improvement in visibility.
Yes they are! The better lighting actually allows for lower minimums in bad weather under IFR

What the FAA needs to do is color parallel runways differently. This would avoid many errors.
Can hold for associated taxiways as well.
That’d be cool. You could have a runway 36 green and a 36 orange
