Fully agree. What's the point of talking about bad products if you don't want to name them? Maybe the secret is paying for what you review, no sponsorship. I follow two channels that do just that, and they don't hold back: Project Farm and Freakin' Reviews.

Phil is always polite and thoughtful. Puts his audience first and tries to do the best by suppliers. To hear of companies sending nasty emails about petty stuff is disappointing. If he was nasty and they were scared he might retaliate then it may have been a different situation. Funny to see him drop an F bomb. Would be even funnier to see him name and shame.

I really appreciate your honesty Phil. I understand the need for sponsorships as the creators in this space need to pay the bills like anyone else. With that being said, the interactions you’ve described have really damaged the TH-cam gear space. I’m at the point where I basically don’t trust any “reviews” at all anymore. I wish all creators started calling out their sponsors for this sort of behavior. Keep up the good work 👍🏼👍🏼

I recently got a 12 string Washburn EA20-12 from 1995. Needed a small shim under the nut and some truss adjustment to straighten the neck and lower the action. I did the shim perfect AND the truss…then I “got greedy” and went 1/8” of a turn too much on the truss and SNAP CITY. Had to have it replaced to the tune of $493. Hated paying it…BUT worth every penny. You can’t even tell this guy did work on it.

Lots of questions about alternate tunings: I play tele’s, and have several cheaper ones for alternate tunings. To keep the tension on the neck within tolerances, I tune down to D and put a capo on the 2nd fret to come back up to E, then do the alt tuning. The “low E to F#” tuning I change out the E string for a lighter guage.

@blurry.magnets thin, but still familiar. Had a nice Les Paul with a chunky 50's profile. My hand would go numb after about 10 minutes.
I now have a Les Paul with the 60's Slim Taper and an SG Jr. Much easier on the hands. The Charvels I can play all night. I'm not much of a shredder, but I do like the occasional Jake E Lee or Randy riffs.
I also have compression wrist bands that help a lot.

In the 1970s my Brother had an "Applause" guitar (Applause was an Ovation subsidiary). It definitely had an aluminum fingerboard, I'm not sure about the neck. It had excessive fret wear early in its life. We weren't able to find a good treatment. Michael just got a better guitar. Maybe the idea was once you wear out your plastic and soft metal guitar, you've probably learned enough to know what you want next...

I've been a luthier and guitar tech for thirty years, with the exception of poorly built acoustic and classical guitars, they're built to carry the tension of standard tuning (and with in reason other tunings). I've not seen a guitar that requires repair due to being left at tension. However, guitars can be prone to "lamp post" breaks where the headstock can break from impact not necessarily at the headstock. Maple necks can be unpredictable as maple (so I've been told) can carry inner tension and can warp with out notice. I always cut maple oversize incase it warps slightly after being cut. From what I've seen Phillip seems to be right on point.

I bought an S2 594 Thinline which has the same pickups as a lot of SE models. For most music, including rock, the stock pickups are fine. Playing with the pickup height will reap rewards. I wanted something a bit more articulate because I play a lot of jangly arpeggios. I threw some Bare Knuckle Old Guards in and got what I wanted, PAF with articulation. I've also had great luck with Thornbuckers on other guitars. Again, the stock pickups are fine for most guitarists.

Just a quick response on Open E tuning: I tune to open E but down half a step. I have Fender's, Gibson's, Epiphone's, acoustics all tuned to said tuning, and I've never had an issue. And these guitars have remained in this tuning for years, no issue with neck warp, or any other tension related issue.

On Cort: About five years ago I bought a Cort single-cut, five-string bass. Couldn't (and can't) afford a Fodera, but wanted a single cut bass in that style. The Cort fit the bill. It's an amazing instrument. Neck-through, ash body with spalted maple top, great looking figured panga panga fretboard, and Bartolini pickups. I love it. When I got it, I posted in some guitar group and some dude was like, "You're a sucker. I'd never pay that much for an Indonesian guitar." That thinking is what Cort has to overcome, and I think in the five years since a lot of headway has been made toward overcoming that kind of thinking.

I personally own 4 Cort made guitars, only one with "cort" on the headstock. They're solid. I have two Squiers, one Cort acoustic, one PRS SE. All of them 10 to 20 years old, from the Cort Korea factory before they moved. Solid guitars. I think Cort is great.

Some people hee & haw about Gibson, but when it comes to the secondary market, the re-sale potential is extremely high, scratches, scuffs and all. I bought a couple of guitars made by a smaller but respected brand a few years ago (I won't mention the name), and though they are held in high esteem for their overall build quality, what people were willing to pay on the secondary market was a rude awakening... learning by doing.

I would hope that with the reasonable prices of carbon fiber reinforcing rods for guitar necks and the proliferation of CNC machines in brand name manufacturers or larger guitar makers any 12 string guitars should come with them installed. Helps with the neck but on an acoustic that's a LOT of stress on the bridge lifting on that thin usually spruce guitar top. I'd like to see them in 6 string guitars as well.

Fast legato runs in patterns are not necessarily a musical asset. Technical prowess should be subtle (if not obscured) and subservient to melody, harmony, and phrasing. A guitar neck should support a wide variety of playing styles. Versatility of art and tools must interplay with each other.

my Gibson 59 reissue I purchased in 92 broken head stock leaning forward as far as the case would allow between packing up at out studio and getting to our gig 10 min away and only touched by me after owning less than 5 years, cost a small fortune to have fixed b4 I knew how to do it and the gold under the black face bleed thru over the years to come looking like gold veins in the head stock. I had a Custom 72 that slip along the keys, fairly common due to glue on ears. I don't buy Gibson any more, would have loved to get the money my 59R would be worth today though. Guitar trades are the best to me. Had a high end Cole-Clarke 12 string I wanted to move and ended up trading it for a vintage 1996 Guild Bluesbird. I was not playing that 12 string because I never liked the neck and have other 12s I liked lots better. The Bluesbird has been in my hands for a few hours every day since coming home. I has the MOJO....... my wife is not a musician and says she really like the sound of the Guilds Seymour-Duncan's.
The goal for me is guitars I want to play and enjoy playing when I pick them up. The price I paid or the market value has little bearing on my enjoyment. My "best" 12 string I paid $100 for as a basket case in a pawn shop and fully restored. My favorite electric is a $700 Yamaha Revstar Standard.
Trust your hands and your ears. They are your best judge of a guitar.

The Ibanez Wizard III is way too thin and flat for me. I don't care for any neck beyond a 12' radius - 9 1/2" to 12" for me. I also dislike anything more narrow than 1 5/8" - 1 3/4-1 7/8" for me. Regarding profile types, I stay away from "D"' shapes. The shoulders have too small a radius for comfort. The so-called "modern C" label is a safe bet to try. The neck thicknesses that fall somewhere between 0.8" and 0.95" don't seen to detract from playing. Fretboard edge radius and overhang have been experimented with by makers and have exceeded my comfort range occasionally. String spacing is critical for me due to my preferred finger style of string excitation and dynamic control. Please make that around 1.43" E to E' so I can play pseudo classical style with some strings droning - at times. Other than those specification ranges I'm not too picky. I don't get hung up on materials above ergonomic considerations. P.S.; Pickup magnetic field locations pin-pointed along the stings relative to length (due to node fluctuation) is woefully UNDER analyzed.

OK, logic question here. What’s the difference in string tension on my 12 string acoustic if it sits everyday for a long time or I play it everyday for the same amount of time? For that matter, how does any stringed instrument “know” if it’s being played or not? Am I missing something?

Hi Phil, ?? I recently upgraded my pots in my dual humbucker 1v, 1 tone 3 way switch guitar, now when the volume is completely off there is still some sound that bleeds through to the amp, it didn't do this before, is there a solution to this? Thanks, love the show 🤙🤘

None of my back plates are on. I have a stack of them on my self. A couple of them are from guitars I don’t even have anymore. lol… I’ve built a few partscasters over the years using pawnshop cheapies or using guitars given to me or what I have found in the ally trash can.
I think Gibson are moving away from selling low end value guitars and not worrying about that end of the market. Because Epiphone can handle that market better and easier or more efficiently. I think. It seems that might be what is happening. I might be totally wrong as well.

Brand names matter only for the reason of brand recognition. I can build a guitar from cheap parts found online that shame the best brand names. So, I'm gonna do that. Don't expect to sell many, do expect everyone who buys one to love it. As a luthier, I'll back it 100%. It will play amazing, it will sound amazing, it won't say Fender or Gibson on the headstock. We'll see how this goes, not going all-in on this venture, just testing the waters. Wick'ed Guitars, my friends call me Wick.

Regarding the guy who wanted to do his first regret, tell him to be sure that he has given leveling and recrowning a shot first. To me before you go through the serious effort of regretting, I would level and crown first.
