I recently traded my 07 Civic for a 2014 Corolla S. One of the primary reasons I traded was that the Corolla allows for easier access for the driver and the drivers position sits up higher than the Civic. As I have gotten older I find that ingress and egress are more important now and getting in and out of the Civic is considerably more difficult than the Corolla. The deeper cockpit and lower seat in the Civic made it more difficult for me and I find visibility in the Corolla much better. So in your review you missed those important features for older or slightly handicapped people. As far as horse power the Civic has what, 11 more hp! That may make a .004 difference on a quarter mile track but most people are not trying to set speed records so the difference is of no consequence.
are you talking about 2007 Honda Civic model? How about comparing 2014 version of Civic, maybe it can allow same easiness in getting in and out as Corolla of the same year model?
I have owned both, and I spent more money maintaining the Civic than the Corolla. I sold the civic and the Corolla is still running with normal maintenance like brake, tires and oil changes. Civic = timing belt, needs replacement every 60K Corolla = timing chain, typically never needs replacement. At the end of the day, it's a matter of preference. And mine, obviously, the Toyota. Also had an Acura Legend and an Accord V6 cost me quite a bit of money to keep them running and the dash lights off. Both car ABS modules went out, then the Airbag module went out, each cost over $1,200 to replace. My Mom had Camry, other than oil changes, didn't have to spend anything unexpectedly.
The guy in the Honda is talking about not being able to reach the radio/navigation buttons?! who the fuck put this umpa-lumpa in the seat?? dudes crying cuz he too stupid to move the seat forward. The corolla is for sure nicer.
Timothy Taylor actually I heard timing belts need to be replace 90-100k miles that what toyota said to me for my 03 Toyota Avalon xls. But I thinks sooner than better is the key word.
I own a 2014 corolla and i love it. But honestly that civic looks badass. Both such good cars. Just take your pick. You won't be sorry either way I'm guessing.
And Civic is offered in a coupe model too not Corolla. I heard CVT transmission not good too but mine has been 100% solid after 52k and Im an assertive driver
I agree, and with those projector headlights the Corolla's exterior just looks more relatively upscale when compared to the Civic. The only thing I don't like is how Toyota decided to play into the nonsensical gaping carp-mouth look that too many manufacturers are applying these days. That's the only thing that mars the look of the 'Rolla, IMO.
I agree even though I'm getting the Honda I definitely am with you I seen one today at the gym and it was great. But the ride from Toyota vs Honda is borning vs near luxury I'll take the Honda.

I was a pizza delivery guy with a $300 dollar 1989 cavalier. Lasted 4 years through high school and freshman college. Chicks digged it, and insurance company paid out $3000 when someone T-boned her. And i still drove it around.. I made quite a bit of money on that car!
I test drove both today. The Corolla is loud when you accelerate, and the Civic just seemed smoother all around; even the acceleration was seamless. Still trying to find my dream car. 😋

I had an a 98 honda civic with almost 350 k miles & was still running good until i sold it & now will get the 2014 Honda civic cause they are the best!!
I went with the 2014 Corolla S because I'm 6'2 and when I sat in the Honda Civic and adjusted everything then drove it I couldn't turn my steering wheel without it hitting my knees. The Corolla has way more room and the interior quality is excellent the drive is quiet and smooth and even tho the Honda has more horsepower the sport mode makes up for that! Overall Toyota is amazing! Hondas are very reliable and bullet proof but honestly so are Toyotas my friend has almost 400,000 miles on his Corolla and 243,000 on his Camry and it's still going strong. Anyways that's just my opinion, like the guy said in the video it's really about personal preference!
I love these comparison reviews. One thing I hope you guys add is to mention the safety tests and their results for each vehicles. I think that's quite important these days especially for the type of people who purchase affordable cars like these. Just my personal recommendation on reviewing cars in these categories.. People are usually looking for reliability (will it last, safety), functionality (backseat space, trunk, head), and efficiency (mpg, drivability). All summarizing into affordability. I wish they had hatchback versions of these cars. I don't they the American market.
I chose the Corolla. Better looking, included a lot of safety features, and the price was unbeatable; 17k for the LE model (albeit with steel wheels). I prefer the Corolla's "carp mouth" look. Meanwhile Honda's still rocking that underbite bumper which looks very 2000's imo.
What's very simple to look at is the Honda's vastly superior safety rating than that of the Toyota's. Though, that trend continues on to both brand's entire lineups, I would definitely choose the Honda because it's not a death trap like so many Toyotas are as well as being more powerful.
Talal Aziz Eh, honda has hit a slump. its no wonder they had to do an emergency refresh on their civic. The accord might be great, but the rest of their line-up, including acura, are seriously in need of help, the pilot? the insight? crz? truly mediocre and aging.

Japanese cars are still king in terms of logical buyers. The best reliability, the strongest resale values. After owning a german car, and dealing with repairs and terrible resale values, I understand why japanese cars are so popular.
I have the 2013 civic...still a great car and is very similar to the 2014 model. Just added paddle shifters and fog lights are some of the key differences from the two models
I absolutely hate the way Civic looks. After 2004 model, exterior has gone down hill for my taste. Corolla on the other hand looks more fun (finally) and exciting. However, since i am Toyota owner and sort of disappointing at how much they dropped down quality compare to older Toyota models, i would choose Honda. They are just built better and actually care about their drivers. Still, i would not buy Civic. I would rather spend more money and get Accord.
PerfectceII This is a little late to say, but the 2006 and the 2011 model is the same (8th gen), you must be thinking about the 2012 model when it moved into the 9th gen. At that, I do agree, it became a lot more bulkier for my taste, but what do you expect? It has all the new built in technology.
I like em both, but I liked the CVT and looks over the Honda when I drove both. The CVT in the Toyota was programmed better and performed better in sport mode than the Civic. Both great, though for basic transportation. Not to mention the LED headlights were just great.
I drive a toyota, but i have been in both of these cars and the honda's interior is way better made. right down to the leather seats, compared to the fake leather on the corolla and vynl inserts. i have no idea where he got the notion the interior on the toyota is nicer, because while it IS nice, the civic still kicks it out of the water on the maturity and quality scale. it's expected, the civic costs more for a reason.
i got the honda and i love it. its true that its abit more expensive but its more than worth it. the look, the feel, the performance, and the style are just much better. right now i put tinted windows(4 in the back and 3 in the front, and will be tinting my windshield 1), I installed some HIDs(6k), and changed the inside map and dome lights as well as the trunk light to LEDs blue, and the license plate light to a frost white(since blue is illegal :( ) needless to say all my friends and ppl that see the car love it.
Long gone are the days of the Civic that was built mostly for speeders and immature teens. The Civic is much better than the ones even around the mid 00's and might consider this as first vehicle. Perhaps at first in around the 2010-2012 models instead of new from scratch, but Civic might be at top of my list. Though quite surprised at the low HP (132 and 143) for both
Did no one else hear the interior of the Corolla when he was driving? It sounds like the car is rattling and shaking apart when going over bumps. The Civic was much quieter in comparison. Sounds like the Civic has better build quality
The Corolla's twist-beam axle probably gives it the advantage in rear seat room and trunk space, but I prefer the Civic's independent rear suspension myself.
Autoguide, when testing the MPG, how many miles do you guys actually drive? And do you guys calculate by pumping gas or go off the estimation the car shows you? Just curious because every Honda I have owned, my average MPG is near (+- 2mpg) to the estimated highway MPG.
I am a honda guy for sure, but when I test drove them both, I had to go with the corolla s plus for two reasons, one I saved 4k on not buying ex l and corolla's seats were so comfortable I didnt want to get out. Now I feel bad because I love honda but it really comes down to what you prefer at the time and what is in your budget. They are both great cars. Honestly you can't go wrong with either of them. Before you judge you should really just test drive them both. I did and it was a hard choice. Keep in mind they are both better then kia forte and ford focus lol. I tested the mazda as well but because I never owned one before I didn't want to take a risk.
Sorry, Corolla - a car that is known as going on and on..reliability is their known history. I'm sorry, when driving that's what I care about not whether a car has awesome interior seats. Hands down the Corolla.
Corolla does not offer leather. Toyota sells something they call Softex which is phoney leather. The Toyota cruise control doesn't work under 50 MPH. The Toyota nav system can't be changed while the car is moving which means that if you're traveling with someone and want to change the route, you have to stop the car. No contest...Honda has much better features.
I have driven both model of cars for extensive periods of times so am able to assess the two: the Corolla is more poorly put together with loose panels and just not a solid feeling. The Civic is far quieter and feels even more buttoned down than the 9th generation Accord (which I have). Neither are speed demons but the Civic has a less coarse engine. MPG is better on the Corolla by about 3-4 mpg overall. Corolla has a lot more back seat room BUT it comes from the dash board being very short, near the firewall, which is sort of weird - if you've ever sat in those Japanese Toyota Crown Comfort's (they are taxi's all over Japan - go google it) then it feels like a derivative of one of those rather than from the Corolla lineage. Driving hundreds of miles on the highway for each, I felt fatigued (noisy, jittery) and sore (rougher riding) with the Corolla but fresh and fine with the Civic (quieter, more insulated and softer). Overall,. I'd spring for a Civic if it were down to the two without hesitating as it would be worth the extra few bucks. Then again, I'd give serious consideration to the '15 Fit instead...
I have a 2001 Honda Civic that I adore, but I wanted to upgrade from the 2-door to a 4-door. I really wanted a new civic but with the dual dash of the 2014 and 2015, I can't see anymore. It takes away MOST of my forward sight line. I was so disappointed. I was thinking about a Corolla, but this kind of talked me out of it.
Replace side view mirrors with cameras? That has to be the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard of. Those cameras wont last the life of the car, where the mirrors will outlast it.
I've had the corolla le eco for 6 mos, it gets about 36-37 mpg combined , you can have 2 full sized adults in the back seat who don't have to lick their knees, and I've carried 2x6x 12" lumber w the trunk open, no problem. Acceleration is better than expected and the ride seemed stiff at first but I grew into it. I could drive this car from NJ to FL without feeling uncomfortable and probably get over 40 mpg all the way. It was slightly below $19,000. Plenty of trunk space. I'm a large guy, 6ft x 240 lbs and this car fits me great. The Hondas go for about 3k +, why pay more? It's a sensible car, not a luxury or a sport.
Being from Canada and owning vehicles that all eventually rusted out. I will say paint quality and rust protection is key. I see more older Toyotas with no rust than i do Hondas. Mind you Hondas are definitely not rust buckets but they tend to rust quicker than Toyota from what I've noticed.
The New Civic look's badass in terms of looks, probably the best looking civic to date. Not to mention its more luxurious with the digital dash and touch screen interface. Nothing bashing on Corolla's but that thing looks horrible and just so bland and boring in the inside. There is a reason Civic is the best selling car in canada and not Corolla.
I thoroughly enjoyed this review/comparison. Was very informative and entertaining. Now I have to ask. How many major updates this Civic needs? The typical refresh occurs once in the model life of a car. This must be costing Honda a lot. The Toyota on the other hand still hasn't grown on me not sure if it will. Both these cars however, are equally compelling and it will really come down to personal preference.
Not equally compelling if you REALLY look into them. Just look at their safety ratings. Hondas score MUCH better consistently, especially in the Small Overlap tests...
AdrianC12345 True but let be honest, most of those considering these two cars will most likely decide with their eye, heart, and pockets. Personally I think the Mazda 3 is most compelling relative to these two cars.

I have a 2014 Civic EX. A few months back I drove a 2020 Corolla from Enterprise. I wouldn't trade for money. The interior comfort and feel of the Honda is much better, and while the drive was nicer in the Corolla, it's much easier to pass cars on the highway in my Honda. That's a big deal for cars that struggle with passing power.
Just for the Honda guy to know that the reason the Corolla has paddle shifter is because the Corolla has a sport mode that makes the cvt simulate a 7-speed transmission ,so there is a reason.
Civic is way better. The only thing the Corolla has going for it is extra room and LED headlights. But that's it. In fact, it's way uglier than the Civic. And with the Civic, you won't worry about recalls as much as you would with the Corolla.
Never cared for the new Civics, apart from the SI coupe. My family has had Toyotas for a long time. Never had any issues with any of them. Even my 01 Tacoma is running strong with 177k on the clock. I'd choose the Corolla, not because of previous cars, but because it fits me better and I like the styling and features over the Civic.
Trey Caldwell mine too! I was surprised that I didn't hear that much roadnoise from this guys Civic in this video. Maybe it's the Michelin tires that came with my car? I want more eco tires next time around. I hate the CVT too. I wish they just gave it a 6 speed automatic like the Mazda 3.
Trey Caldwell I get around 29 mpg in Fort Lauderdale. congestion and traffic is bad here too. I try and hyper mile when I can. on the highway it does much better but I use ecomode when I'm on the highway. The highest I've gotten it round-trip with a brand new tank of gas about 60 mile each way was 43mpg at around 68 mph.
So the 2014 Corrola is playing with the same horsepower that my 2004 Vibe (Same as 04 corrola) has? Seriously autoguide, review the MANUALS for once. There are a FEW enthusiasts who still watch your videos.
When Toyota had their major recall in 2009, and many people died because of the runaway Toyota's the Toyota CEO gave a speech and called Toyota buyers "small people", and as he was finished he left in an Audi when he owns Lexus. I used to be the biggest Toyota fan ever but Honda is truly the better car company overall. Even if the Honda had no technology whatsoever it would still be ten times better than the corolla. There is just no comparison.
And where would they place the screen for the left side camera? At the center console? You're changing lanes to the left and you're looking at a monitor on the right... That is why they didn't include it on both mirrors. It is a safety hazard regardless of how well the lane watch functions appose to the mirrors.
It was a rhetorical question. Okay, look. Let's say HYPOTHETICALLY, that Honda does put a camera on the left side mirror using the same monitor. You, as a driver, want to change lanes to the LEFT. As you are changing lanes, you are looking at the monitor on the RIGHT. Please, tell me that you realize how that can be a safety hazard.
What is lacking in this review and others, NO review in noise level preferably in cabin when comfort is concerned.You guys should come out with decibel results in both cars reviewed! From my xperience, noise level in Honda is the loudest in all models...

ryan case I've been told my Corolla S looks like a mini Lexus. I think when they were designing the car they borrowed some ideas from Toyotas sister company, Lexus.
I absolutely hate the interior layout of the civic. I hate the 2 tiered speed and tach. I hate the awkard angles. and I hate their screen. They really need to re-do the interior. The corolla is the better car of the 2.

However, when it comes to RELIABILITY, DEPENDABILITY and LONGEVITY, there is simply no comparison. The Corolla wins OUT AND OUT!! ...My family has had many Honda products and lately their reliability has become VERY MEDIOCRE. My cousin's 2014 Acura MDX has been a reliability nightmare, and my Uncle's 2009 Honda Odyssey has had a ton of issues as well. And this is not the end of the story. Many friends and coworkers that I've run into have had issues with recent Honda products as well. And that is exactly why many of my family members have slowly sworn off Honda products. And FYI, I myself, have had 2 Honda products. A 2000 Acura TL that was flawless, but got stolen after just 18 months of ownership, and a 2004 Acura MDX that was a LEMON.
Hello. I base my reliability comments on Consumer Reports, the only source for unbiased reliability information from actual owners. While you might know a lot of people who own Hondas, you don't know MILLIONS of car owners like CR polls. If I gave a story of three family members who hated their toyotas, would that negate your experience? Both Honda and Toyota traditionally have been neck and neck as the most reliable automobiles on the planet. Some model years will be less with both makers, but overall they are good bets to own.
As someone with a CVT with paddle shifters let me explain why they are great. No, it doesn't help with racing or anything like that but the ability to hold a ratio on long grades and override the cvt programming when merging onto a freeway is very convenient. The CVT not shifting or having any gears has zero to do with offering paddles. Auto media bitched at honda for years for not offering a manual shift feature to their auto trans as the feature became popular on other brands. Now they offer it and auto media bitches about the need for the capability...
Mike- you made a few good points, but some of your points were off. I don't want to sound like a Civic loyalist (though I kind of am), but I don't believe that the Corolla has a "higher quality interior." Just feel the upper door panels in the Corolla, are they soft touch? Nope. The Civic's are. In addition, I don't know where the "hard gear changes" come from. I drive a 9th-gen Civic every day and I have yet to notice hard gear changes. It actually behaves a lot like a general CVT should, though it changes ratios a lot faster than most. In addition, safety should have been mentioned as it puts the Civic a leg up on the Corolla. The Civic trumps the Corolla in terms of overall safety because the Corolla earned a marginal rating on the Small Overlap crash test. Just my $0.02.
Look at the hood of the Corolla vs the Civic. They raised the hood (and the dash) of the Corolla so much that now it makes it harder to see the road compared to that of the Civic. If I was a shorter person I would pick the Civic for better forward visibility. I drive a 2006 Corolla and the old model has a lower dash/hood, so visibility of nearby cars while parking in tight parking spots is great, but when I sat in the new Corolla model I found I had to raise the seat up to its maximum and still visibility was awful (I'm 5' 9'' tall). Plus, the roof was lower so the rear-view mirror was right in my line of sight when the seat was that high = just a horrible mish-mash of design styling. Civic is MUCH better.
Things they didn't mention. The corolla has a dual vvti, also the corolla has less road noise, chain driven not belt driven. Look in to the corolla Eco model as well.
I had a corolla back up into me and it left a dent the size of a soccer ball in the Corolla. It scratched mine. I like the reliability of both but I prefer Honda.
5:16 isn't that the damn point? A efficient transmission. Also the cvt is supposed to mimic an auto. I don't know what kind of civic you guys had but my civic doesn't clunk and all at all. Plus cvt now a days pretty much suck. But Honda cvts are completely different than others. They kick in fast and not to mention they're more efficient plus quiet.

I got a Toyota Corolla rental and I must say. They really got their shit together. Materials are good as the 2003-2006 Toyota Corolla's. I can't really flaw the new Corolla for what it was built to do. I also had time in the new Honda Civic. My biggest gripe is that I felt like I was buying a very old body style. The Civic front end and shape hasn't changed since 2006! Come on Honda. Have some balls to change.
It really comes in personal preference, and what you want, I have a Corolla S 2015, I like the exterior look then the 2015 Civic SI, and yeah ( my first choice was the Mazda 3 GT ), too !! but ended up with this Corolla S upgrade version, because I heard a lot (friends) of people saying bad things about Mazda's, not that reliable and lots of maintenances !!! ,, Anyway, Toyota did a amazing job on both in and out design of 2014 and 2015 model and the driving is very smooth, I just needed to go from point a to b and a good gas mileage car, not a fast car to go from 0-60 in 3 seconds ,, No, need ,,if you live a city, How fast can you go !! ( Police everywhere ) Just enjoy the car ( Corolla , Honda , or Mazda 3 ) all 3 cars are great

Grew up on Honda, but I'm impressed with Toyota lately. Although I prefer the Accord over the Camry, I definitely prefer the new Corolla over the Civic.
I really don't see why they think the Civic trails the Corolla on the interior, I hate the upright design of the dash, in my opinion the Civic is far better inside and out, and I'm not even a big Honda fan.
Just bought a 2015 civic and I'm 6feet tall and when i sat in the 2015 corolla driver seat my legs were still buckled the civic has way more room for taller people... Look how the guy sitting in the corolla his legs are still buckled and the guy in the Honda are not. And you can see how the guy says that you have more room in the back of the corolla but said nothing about the front cabin.. For me its the driver thats suppose to be most comfortable I even sat in the back oh my car an still had room to move around Civic is the way to go for taller people IMO..
The corolla is a rental queen Toyota should be embarrassed. There are more corollas in our Hertz fleet than ANY other compact we offer. Admittedly the 2014 corolla is MUCH improved over the 2013, but that's really not saying much considering how awful the old car is.
If you want to pick between the Civic or the Corolla; go take a test drive of the Elantra and you will find that it is better / cheaper than BOTH of these cars. Don't get the Elantra with the 2.0L engine, it SUCKS on gas, instead get the older but much more efficient smaller 1.8L engine and that is the perfect small car today. If you want an efficient hatchback, get the new 2015 Honda Fit (base model); that one cannot be beat for quality, fun-to-drive, and 41 mpg (without going diesel or hybrid).

The Honda Civic wins in quality, power, tech features and MPG's. The Corolla is bigger. There is only choice and that choice is Honda.

Well both are very good quality cars but I would give my vote to the corolla, its cheaper and has more room.

I test drove both today. The Corolla is loud when you accelerate, and the Civic just seemed smoother all around; even the acceleration was seamless. Still trying to find my dream car. 😋
hhmmmm toyota has bigger space but honda has better quality, fuel mpg, looks, reliability. my minds made up, and my choice is the mazda 3

I went with the 2014 Corolla S because I'm 6'2 and when I sat in the Honda Civic and adjusted everything then drove it I couldn't turn my steering wheel without it hitting my knees. The Corolla has way more room and the interior quality is excellent the drive is quiet and smooth and even tho the Honda has more horsepower the sport mode makes up for that! Overall Toyota is amazing! Hondas are very reliable and bullet proof but honestly so are Toyotas my friend has almost 400,000 miles on his Corolla and 243,000 on his Camry and it's still going strong. Anyways that's just my opinion, like the guy said in the video it's really about personal preference!
I love these comparison reviews. One thing I hope you guys add is to mention the safety tests and their results for each vehicles. I think that's quite important these days especially for the type of people who purchase affordable cars like these. Just my personal recommendation on reviewing cars in these categories.. People are usually looking for reliability (will it last, safety), functionality (backseat space, trunk, head), and efficiency (mpg, drivability). All summarizing into affordability.
I wish they had hatchback versions of these cars. I don't they the American market.

I chose the Corolla. Better looking, included a lot of safety features, and the price was unbeatable; 17k for the LE model (albeit with steel wheels). I prefer the Corolla's "carp mouth" look. Meanwhile Honda's still rocking that underbite bumper which looks very 2000's imo.

What's very simple to look at is the Honda's vastly superior safety rating than that of the Toyota's. Though, that trend continues on to both brand's entire lineups, I would definitely choose the Honda because it's not a death trap like so many Toyotas are as well as being more powerful.

Japanese cars are still king in terms of logical buyers. The best reliability, the strongest resale values. After owning a german car, and dealing with repairs and terrible resale values, I understand why japanese cars are so popular.
I have the 2013 civic...still a great car and is very similar to the 2014 model. Just added paddle shifters and fog lights are some of the key differences from the two models
I absolutely hate the way Civic looks. After 2004 model, exterior has gone down hill for my taste.
Corolla on the other hand looks more fun (finally) and exciting.
However, since i am Toyota owner and sort of disappointing at how much they dropped down quality compare to older Toyota models, i would choose Honda. They are just built better and actually care about their drivers. Still, i would not buy Civic. I would rather spend more money and get Accord.
PerfectceII This is a little late to say, but the 2006 and the 2011 model is the same (8th gen), you must be thinking about the 2012 model when it moved into the 9th gen. At that, I do agree, it became a lot more bulkier for my taste, but what do you expect? It has all the new built in technology.
I'm 6 feet tall and I find the civic supports my back much better, the corolla seems to be made for "shorter" drivers it would seem...

I like em both, but I liked the CVT and looks over the Honda when I drove both. The CVT in the Toyota was programmed better and performed better in sport mode than the Civic. Both great, though for basic transportation. Not to mention the LED headlights were just great.
I drive a toyota, but i have been in both of these cars and the honda's interior is way better made. right down to the leather seats, compared to the fake leather on the corolla and vynl inserts. i have no idea where he got the notion the interior on the toyota is nicer, because while it IS nice, the civic still kicks it out of the water on the maturity and quality scale. it's expected, the civic costs more for a reason.

i got the honda and i love it. its true that its abit more expensive but its more than worth it. the look, the feel, the performance, and the style are just much better. right now i put tinted windows(4 in the back and 3 in the front, and will be tinting my windshield 1), I installed some HIDs(6k), and changed the inside map and dome lights as well as the trunk light to LEDs blue, and the license plate light to a frost white(since blue is illegal :( ) needless to say all my friends and ppl that see the car love it.
Long gone are the days of the Civic that was built mostly for speeders and immature teens. The Civic is much better than the ones even around the mid 00's and might consider this as first vehicle. Perhaps at first in around the 2010-2012 models instead of new from scratch, but Civic might be at top of my list. Though quite surprised at the low HP (132 and 143) for both
Did no one else hear the interior of the Corolla when he was driving? It sounds like the car is rattling and shaking apart when going over bumps. The Civic was much quieter in comparison. Sounds like the Civic has better build quality
The Corolla's twist-beam axle probably gives it the advantage in rear seat room and trunk space, but I prefer the Civic's independent rear suspension myself.

Autoguide, when testing the MPG, how many miles do you guys actually drive? And do you guys calculate by pumping gas or go off the estimation the car shows you?
Just curious because every Honda I have owned, my average MPG is near (+- 2mpg) to the estimated highway MPG.
I am a honda guy for sure, but when I test drove them both, I had to go with the corolla s plus for two reasons, one I saved 4k on not buying ex l and corolla's seats were so comfortable I didnt want to get out. Now I feel bad because I love honda but it really comes down to what you prefer at the time and what is in your budget. They are both great cars. Honestly you can't go wrong with either of them.
Before you judge you should really just test drive them both. I did and it was a hard choice. Keep in mind they are both better then kia forte and ford focus lol. I tested the mazda as well but because I never owned one before I didn't want to take a risk.
Sorry, Corolla - a car that is known as going on and on..reliability is their known history. I'm sorry, when driving that's what I care about not whether a car has awesome interior seats. Hands down the Corolla.
Corolla does not offer leather. Toyota sells something they call Softex which is phoney leather. The Toyota cruise control doesn't work under 50 MPH. The Toyota nav system can't be changed while the car is moving which means that if you're traveling with someone and want to change the route, you have to stop the car.

I have driven both model of cars for extensive periods of times so am able to assess the two: the Corolla is more poorly put together with loose panels and just not a solid feeling. The Civic is far quieter and feels even more buttoned down than the 9th generation Accord (which I have). Neither are speed demons but the Civic has a less coarse engine. MPG is better on the Corolla by about 3-4 mpg overall. Corolla has a lot more back seat room BUT it comes from the dash board being very short, near the firewall, which is sort of weird - if you've ever sat in those Japanese Toyota Crown Comfort's (they are taxi's all over Japan - go google it) then it feels like a derivative of one of those rather than from the Corolla lineage. Driving hundreds of miles on the highway for each, I felt fatigued (noisy, jittery) and sore (rougher riding) with the Corolla but fresh and fine with the Civic (quieter, more insulated and softer). Overall,. I'd spring for a Civic if it were down to the two without hesitating as it would be worth the extra few bucks. Then again, I'd give serious consideration to the '15 Fit instead...

I have a 2001 Honda Civic that I adore, but I wanted to upgrade from the 2-door to a 4-door. I really wanted a new civic but with the dual dash of the 2014 and 2015, I can't see anymore. It takes away MOST of my forward sight line. I was so disappointed. I was thinking about a Corolla, but this kind of talked me out of it.

I've had the corolla le eco for 6 mos, it gets about 36-37 mpg combined , you can have 2 full sized adults in the back seat who don't have to lick their knees, and I've carried 2x6x 12" lumber w the trunk open, no problem. Acceleration is better than expected and the ride seemed stiff at first but I grew into it. I could drive this car from NJ to FL without feeling uncomfortable and probably get over 40 mpg all the way. It was slightly below $19,000. Plenty of trunk space. I'm a large guy, 6ft x 240 lbs and this car fits me great. The Hondas go for about 3k +, why pay more? It's a sensible car, not a luxury or a sport.

Being from Canada and owning vehicles that all eventually rusted out. I will say paint quality and rust protection is key. I see more older Toyotas with no rust than i do Hondas. Mind you Hondas are definitely not rust buckets but they tend to rust quicker than Toyota from what I've noticed.
The New Civic look's badass in terms of looks, probably the best looking civic to date. Not to mention its more luxurious with the digital dash and touch screen interface. Nothing bashing on Corolla's but that thing looks horrible and just so bland and boring in the inside.

I thoroughly enjoyed this review/comparison. Was very informative and entertaining. Now I have to ask. How many major updates this Civic needs? The typical refresh occurs once in the model life of a car. This must be costing Honda a lot. The Toyota on the other hand still hasn't grown on me not sure if it will. Both these cars however, are equally compelling and it will really come down to personal preference.
Not equally compelling if you REALLY look into them. Just look at their safety ratings. Hondas score MUCH better consistently, especially in the Small Overlap tests...

I have a 2014 Civic EX. A few months back I drove a 2020 Corolla from Enterprise. I wouldn't trade for money. The interior comfort and feel of the Honda is much better, and while the drive was nicer in the Corolla, it's much easier to pass cars on the highway in my Honda. That's a big deal for cars that struggle with passing power.

Just for the Honda guy to know that the reason the Corolla has paddle shifter is because the Corolla has a sport mode that makes the cvt simulate a 7-speed transmission ,so there is a reason.

Civic is way better. The only thing the Corolla has going for it is extra room and LED headlights. But that's it. In fact, it's way uglier than the Civic. And with the Civic, you won't worry about recalls as much as you would with the Corolla.

Never cared for the new Civics, apart from the SI coupe. My family has had Toyotas for a long time. Never had any issues with any of them. Even my 01 Tacoma is running strong with 177k on the clock. I'd choose the Corolla, not because of previous cars, but because it fits me better and I like the styling and features over the Civic.

Trey Caldwell I get around 29 mpg in Fort Lauderdale. congestion and traffic is bad here too. I try and hyper mile when I can. on the highway it does much better but I use ecomode when I'm on the highway. The highest I've gotten it round-trip with a brand new tank of gas about 60 mile each way was 43mpg at around 68 mph.

When Toyota had their major recall in 2009, and many people died because of the runaway Toyota's the Toyota CEO gave a speech and called Toyota buyers "small people", and as he was finished he left in an Audi when he owns Lexus. I used to be the biggest Toyota fan ever but Honda is truly the better car company overall. Even if the Honda had no technology whatsoever it would still be ten times better than the corolla. There is just no comparison.

I absolutely hate the interior layout of the civic. I hate the 2 tiered speed and tach. I hate the awkard angles. and I hate their screen. They really need to re-do the interior. The corolla is the better car of the 2.

However, when it comes to RELIABILITY, DEPENDABILITY and LONGEVITY, there is simply no comparison. The Corolla wins OUT AND OUT!! ...My family has had many Honda products and lately their reliability has become VERY MEDIOCRE.
My cousin's 2014 Acura MDX has been a reliability nightmare, and my Uncle's 2009 Honda Odyssey has had a ton of issues as well. And this is not the end of the story. Many friends and coworkers that I've run into have had issues with recent Honda products as well. And that is exactly why many of my family members have slowly sworn off Honda products.
And FYI, I myself, have had 2 Honda products. A 2000 Acura TL that was flawless, but got stolen after just 18 months of ownership, and a 2004 Acura MDX that was a LEMON.
Hello. I base my reliability comments on Consumer Reports, the only source for unbiased reliability information from actual owners. While you might know a lot of people who own Hondas, you don't know MILLIONS of car owners like CR polls. If I gave a story of three family members who hated their toyotas, would that negate your experience? Both Honda and Toyota traditionally have been neck and neck as the most reliable automobiles on the planet. Some model years will be less with both makers, but overall they are good bets to own.
As someone with a CVT with paddle shifters let me explain why they are great. No, it doesn't help with racing or anything like that but the ability to hold a ratio on long grades and override the cvt programming when merging onto a freeway is very convenient. The CVT not shifting or having any gears has zero to do with offering paddles. Auto media bitched at honda for years for not offering a manual shift feature to their auto trans as the feature became popular on other brands. Now they offer it and auto media bitches about the need for the capability...
Mike- you made a few good points, but some of your points were off. I don't want to sound like a Civic loyalist (though I kind of am), but I don't believe that the Corolla has a "higher quality interior." Just feel the upper door panels in the Corolla, are they soft touch? Nope. The Civic's are. In addition, I don't know where the "hard gear changes" come from. I drive a 9th-gen Civic every day and I have yet to notice hard gear changes. It actually behaves a lot like a general CVT should, though it changes ratios a lot faster than most. In addition, safety should have been mentioned as it puts the Civic a leg up on the Corolla. The Civic trumps the Corolla in terms of overall safety because the Corolla earned a marginal rating on the Small Overlap crash test. Just my $0.02.
Look at the hood of the Corolla vs the Civic. They raised the hood (and the dash) of the Corolla so much that now it makes it harder to see the road compared to that of the Civic. If I was a shorter person I would pick the Civic for better forward visibility.
I drive a 2006 Corolla and the old model has a lower dash/hood, so visibility of nearby cars while parking in tight parking spots is great, but when I sat in the new Corolla model I found I had to raise the seat up to its maximum and still visibility was awful (I'm 5' 9'' tall). Plus, the roof was lower so the rear-view mirror was right in my line of sight when the seat was that high = just a horrible mish-mash of design styling. Civic is MUCH better.
Things they didn't mention. The corolla has a dual vvti, also the corolla has less road noise, chain driven not belt driven. Look in to the corolla Eco model as well.
I had a corolla back up into me and it left a dent the size of a soccer ball in the Corolla. It scratched mine. I like the reliability of both but I prefer Honda.
5:16 isn't that the damn point? A efficient transmission. Also the cvt is supposed to mimic an auto. I don't know what kind of civic you guys had but my civic doesn't clunk and all at all. Plus cvt now a days pretty much suck. But Honda cvts are completely different than others. They kick in fast and not to mention they're more efficient plus quiet.

I got a Toyota Corolla rental and I must say. They really got their shit together. Materials are good as the 2003-2006 Toyota Corolla's. I can't really flaw the new Corolla for what it was built to do.
I also had time in the new Honda Civic. My biggest gripe is that I felt like I was buying a very old body style. The Civic front end and shape hasn't changed since 2006! Come on Honda. Have some balls to change.

It really comes in personal preference, and what you want, I have a Corolla S 2015, I like the exterior look then the 2015 Civic SI, and yeah ( my first choice was the Mazda 3 GT ), too !! but ended up with this Corolla S upgrade version, because I heard a lot (friends) of people saying bad things about Mazda's, not that reliable and lots of maintenances !!! ,, Anyway, Toyota did a amazing job on both in and out design of 2014 and 2015 model and the driving is very smooth, I just needed to go from point a to b and a good gas mileage car, not a fast car to go from 0-60 in 3 seconds ,, No, need ,,if you live a city, How fast can you go !! ( Police everywhere ) Just enjoy the car ( Corolla , Honda , or Mazda 3 ) all 3 cars are great

I really don't see why they think the Civic trails the Corolla on the interior, I hate the upright design of the dash, in my opinion the Civic is far better inside and out, and I'm not even a big Honda fan.
And I'm pretty sure the iPhone 5s and 5c are also compatible with the infotainment system.
Just bought a 2015 civic and I'm 6feet tall and when i sat in the 2015 corolla driver seat my legs were still buckled the civic has way more room for taller people... Look how the guy sitting in the corolla his legs are still buckled and the guy in the Honda are not. And you can see how the guy says that you have more room in the back of the corolla but said nothing about the front cabin.. For me its the driver thats suppose to be most comfortable I even sat in the back oh my car an still had room to move around Civic is the way to go for taller people IMO..

The corolla is a rental queen Toyota should be embarrassed. There are more corollas in our Hertz fleet than ANY other compact we offer. Admittedly the 2014 corolla is MUCH improved over the 2013, but that's really not saying much considering how awful the old car is.

If you want to pick between the Civic or the Corolla; go take a test drive of the Elantra and you will find that it is better / cheaper than BOTH of these cars. Don't get the Elantra with the 2.0L engine, it SUCKS on gas, instead get the older but much more efficient smaller 1.8L engine and that is the perfect small car today. If you want an efficient hatchback, get the new 2015 Honda Fit (base model); that one cannot be beat for quality, fun-to-drive, and 41 mpg (without going diesel or hybrid).
Do a comparison between the Handa Insight and Toyota Prius!!!!! Battle of the century!!!
