      @Robert S.Wilson first Ev, had 2 tacomas before this, but not really work trucks.
      About 30mi round trip to work. Mainly city.
      There is no towing other than a small trailer to take yard waste to the local dump when I trim large trees around my house (about 60mi round trip).
      I do 95% of charging at work, usually on Mon and Fri. If I do anything during the week, then I also charge 1 more day at work. Typically 70% on mon, 85% on Fri.
      It's pretty flat here in FL.
      Gone on some easy/med trails near me and to the beach. Nothing major.
      The furthest trip to Charlotte, NC from Orlando, added about 1 hour extra to my trip according to Waze, Ave eff 2mi/KWh.

    I've had my R1T for a month now and just hit 2,000 miles. On road trips, I've noticed an efficiency difference in conserve mode, but I keep it in standard suspension height because the comfort is important to me. Pete even mentioned it rides firm when lowered and it really does. I'll sacrifice the 5% efficiency for that soft ride.

    Great stuff. Love the comparison.
    Aero is far and away more important. Drive around at 40mph and under and range difference would narrow. Put “Typical” load ( weight of 4 people, luggage/cargo ) in each and it would narrow as well.
    Midsize trucks ALWAYS get better mileage than full sized, no matter the “fuel”. Take away aero advantage or add load and they lose that advantage.
    Keep up the great work.

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would love to see that tested. Since I'm willing to place a bet on the opposite being true, at least in mixed driving conditions.
      Disengaging PM Motors have been shown to increase efficiency substantially. While aero effects require highway speeds.

    • @highrafterranch1982
      @highrafterranch1982 ปีที่แล้ว

      So State of Charge does a highway test that finds there is a much larger difference between the Rivian and Lightning than the EPA which is mixed driving under controlled conditions. Your premise is that the Rivian also gets significantly better than EPA difference for low speed/city driving…. Not sure physics works that way. Shouldn’t have better highway and better city but equal mixed driving IMHO.
      Maybe EPA tests are totally off? Could be. That’s why I’d like him to test it “real world” style

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Highrafterranch1982: Tom, mentioned three variables that made the Rivian more efficient. I was suggesting a scientific comparison test of each variable, would be nice. And of course driving speed would vary the results.
      But EPA testing, would not be applicable for numerous reasons. Such as the variability, that the EPA allows in EPA testing methodologies.
      Lastly this is not about physics per se, it's about engineered design differences. Everything in the real world has to obey the laws of physics. But we are not splitting atoms here ;)

      As compared to existing trucks, a tonneau cover improves fuel economy, and for EVs, that extra 10% can help on the long range trips.
      Even 1 mile is sufficient to make the difference from reaching the charging station or not. There are stupid people that will push to the limit or not be smart enough to realize the implication of using more charging station during long trips.

    I have an E-Transit and a Lightning standard range lariat and both have pro power on board and both are on when you turn on the vehicle by default and this does effect range dramatically. I have made a habit of turning pro power off every time I turn the vehicles on. I just did a trip to South Lake Tahoe California this weekend and got 2.5 miles per kilowatt on the round trip of a total of 300 miles. We left our home in Stockton with 90% SOC and got to Tahoe with 20% SOC then as got into Tahoe we charged up to 75% SOC at an EA station and drove around as we needed and then left. Tahoe with 65% SOC and arrived home with 25% SOC.

    @fullyelectric ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tom, I am making my Observation and comment before watching the full video lol I like to see if I am spot on, so as you know vehicle manufacture does many testing with the type of tires they selected, is the tires on the Ford F-150 a manufacturer recommended tire that they sell at the dealer for the F150 lightning? If not that’s a major disadvantage not a small one, is the tires on the R1T stock manufacture tires? So even if the test is side by side the Ford already is at a x2 disadvantage, honestly I would do the test with all stock manufacture tires because it’s more likely everyone would be using their stock tires on their new truck no?

    • @fullyelectric
      @fullyelectric ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok just watch the full video, you state you wanted to be fair if that’s the case why not setup both vehicle as Close as possible not deliberately given one vehicle advantage over the other, like keep the R1T in normal driving mode, setup with high driving hight and leave the tunnel cover open, you already change the tire on the Ford hmmm seems one sided, both vehicles should have disadvantage not advantage over each other to be fair that is .. I do like this test however, but I take it as max advantage for the R1T vs disadvantage F150 perfect test under that setup conditions

Anyway, food for thought if you get bored this summer!

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
      @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I could properly measure any improvement, because if there is, it will be very minimal and we'd really need a more scientific way to test it, like in a wind tunnel. The same goes for the tonneau. I believe it makes a slight difference, but testing it in the real world, with traffic and different temperatures and wind effect, it's just not possible to run a test that you can properly rely on, IMO.

    Great comparison but disappointed you didn't completely explain the wheel size implications during this test. The Lightening has it's "stock" wheel size for optimal performance while your R1T does not have it's stock wheel size. You did initially acknowledge your 20" wheels but then you seemed to only focus on the "all terrain" tires for this comparison. If you had stock wheel sizes on both vehicles (regardless of what type of tires), the range advantage of the R1T would have been even greater - correct? I own an R1T with stock 21" wheels and my overall miles per KWH is 2.52 on 9,800 total miles traveled (includes driving in tow / conserve / all purpose modes - with all purpose representing 80% of total miles driven). I'd also point out this mileage efficiency reference driving exclusively in Colorado (very cold mountain conditions throughout this past winter). I guess the bottom line is - using "stock" wheel sizes for both vehicles would have been an even more accurate comparison.

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
      @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, it's really the fact that the 20" wheel option is only offered with all-terrain tires. In fact, if Rivian offered a 20" wheel option with all-season tires, it would most likely be EPA range rater higher than the 21" wheel option with all-season tires as you have. Typically, the smaller the wheel diameter, using the same tires will have a greater rage rating than the larger wheel diameter, all other things being equal. In this test, both vehicles are fitter with 20" wheels and all-terrain tires, so I believe it's the fairest comparison.

    It would be interesting to see what the difference would have been with the Rivian in All Purpose mode and standard ride height.
    I suspect that’s how you drove it to VT, which is a much more realistic drive mode. Sure if you need to eek out all the range you can, conserve and lowest is the way to go, but much less comfortable (which is probably why you drove the Lightning).

    @racinj7134 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rivian also burns through more power when sitting doing nothing. That burn rate gets calculated in. Tesla's do not calculate that in to their long term trip meters. Ford may not as well. I too keep one that I haven't reset since I got the truck and it's at about 1.8. Yet, I reset my other meter almost daily and it's rare that I'm below 2.1 - 2.2 on every drive. So if every drive is 2.1 or better, why is the long term range only 1.8? Because the Rivian has higher vampire drain rates and unfortunately, it gets calculated into the trip meters.

  • @jvausa
    @jvausa ปีที่แล้ว

    I think if you were concerned with “fairness,” you should have opened the cover on the Rivian. You used the excuse that it came with it. But the F150 came with tires that you changed out to make it more even. So make it more even by giving the F150 a cover or opening the cover on the Rivian or put the stock wheels back on the F150.

      I don't really focus on average speed in my testing. I often stop to adjust cameras or to look at the numbers and while I'm stopped the average speed just drops. Also, the first and 12 miles include a few traffic lights and the same thing happens, the average speed continues to drop while I'm waiting for the light. What I can say is that for about 225 miles of the trip (90%) we drove between 65 mph and 80 mph, mostly at around 75 mph, though and it took us 4 hours and 20 minutes to finish, so if you just divide the miles by the minutes, we averaged about 60 mph for the whole trip, including the time we were stopped.

  • @derekmodric2693

    With Rivian Conserve Mode, I'd ONLY use on Highway driving. It's going to eat up the thread unevenly on the tires regardless, a bit less on the Highway. Also, don't put in Low or Lowest under Conserve, keep on Standard if you want to really save the tires from that camber angle. The difference between Standard and Low/Lowest on Conserve with respect to Range is not really significant and not worth destroying those tires

      You mean tread not thread.... All wheel drive will eat up tires faster than two-wheel drive. What you're concerned about can be easily addressed, by rotating your tires.

      @derekmodric2693 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nc3826 Clearly i cannot spell 🤣 Rivian alignment is performed at Standard height. When you use Low or Lowest for extended period you have to deal with Toe issues since now you have your tires turning to center of the vehicle and this impacts tire wear drastically. So i guess technically you can re-align for Low or Lowest setting to fix this but is it worth it if you're not going to use those settings all the time. Rotating tires isn't going to fix this issue. Better off using Conserve with Standard height, you're not losing significantly on Range doing this

      Lastly , the toe-in alignment issue that you infer that Rivians have, would result in handling problems. Which is far more serious than some irregular tire wear. So good luck with that.

    • @petebremy49
      @petebremy49 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, I agree with Tom, whatever floats your boat. However, these trucks will still take you plenty far at 80mph (I drive 80 in my Tesla with similar range frequently) farther than I can go without a restroom break at which I can easily add another 100 miles of range, more if I grab a coffee. Both of us had to stop for a restroom break during this test. Towing. I hear generalized statements like yours a lot, but it matters a whole lot what you are towing, how far you are towing it, and also how often. Are you towing a 10,000lb RV trailer 1000 miles once a month? Well, yeah, that might be too great an inconvenience. Once or twice a year? Maybe not considering the overall savings may out weigh the inconvenience. Are you a landscaper or contractor towing your equipment from job to job, or a fisherman towing your bass boat to your favorite lake for just the day? Then most likely no problem, you probably aren’t driving more miles than the truck can handle including the tow in one charge. I’m sure there are grey areas in between where one has to decide which truck fits one’s need better. My point is, you can’t say in general electric trucks are either great, or suck, at towing. The job matters. Bottom line, one needs to look at the big picture to decide whether EV or ICE better suits you for towing, but again as Tom said it’s always your choice. My $.02.

    • @johnpoldo8817
      @johnpoldo8817 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with Tom’s excellent points. You’ll be lucky to reach 20 mpg in a gas truck while an EV version will deliver over 60 mpge even at highway speeds.
      Consider too how many miles are non-highway where mileage is 15-20% higher in an EV and lower for gas.
      I stopped buying gas vehicles in 2017 and owed multiple Teslas, Lucid, MB, plus rented Polestar 2 and Tesla.

    • @hallkbrdz

      Here's a real-world example:
      Last Sunday we left Edmond, OK after church and drove to Pueblo, CO. Using ABRP set with an extended-range Lightning leaving at 12:10 PM, it says we should arrive in Pueblo at 10:04 PM (time corrected). This requires 1h56m of charging time, using a less direct route, for a total travel time of 10h54m as it also specifies no more than 65 Mph for part of the route.
      Driving a gas vehicle (Ford Escape) leaving at the same time with one fuel stop and two quick bio stops for my wife, we arrived at 7:45 PM. That's 2h19m less total time, which is quite significant even with the Lightning not towing or hauling anything.
      Will improved batteries and/or range extenders eliminate this difference? Yes. But that is not what we have currently have to purchase. And for this expensive a vehicle, it will have to do more than just truck duties like our old 8ft bed SBC pickup.

    • @hallkbrdz
      @hallkbrdz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petebremy49 For towing I'm basing the 2-3x range reduction on TFL's real world tests with normal trailers most people would generally tow.
      Yes, I think something like a Lightning pro is a great choice for a tradesman driving a short range to a job site for a day, possibly using the battery to power tools. But any of these current trucks are currently a poor choice if you need to occasionally tow nearly anything (aerodynamic drag being the largest drain) more than a few hundred miles if you value your time (and can find working pull-through chargers).
      So yes, use the best tool for the job. But if you only can have one, understand the limitations before buying.

    Perhaps it's just a cultural thing on my end, but those Utes are ridiculously oversized, especially the Lightening F150. For context, I grew up on a farm and learnt to drive in a Land Rover, starting aged 8 on a cold wet winter's day at 3am. My old man said to me to do this, do that, and that, then made me show him I'd listened properly - & that was it. My instruction to learning to drive....😂😂😂
    UNFORTUNATELY, not too long after that as I turned 9, he had a change of heart, telling me that since I was "now old enough, fat enough, & ugly enough", I could get out onto the back of the Land Rover to do the feeding out of the hay while he stayed in the dry, warm cab.....😂😂😂 Such is the life of a country farm kid.
    In case anybody thinks Dad was being mean, (old enough, fat enough, & ugly enough), in my family just means you're quite capable of doing x,y,z, for yourself - so get on with it, I'm not going to do it for you. Nobody takes offence, not even the kids. We all know there's no malice behind it.

But we just don't have the same obsession with oversized vehicles as they do in Nth America, and certain segments of the Down Under population tow their boats down to the coast to be launched or caravans on holidays, so it's not a case that towing isnt a regular thing; our climate encourages outdoor pursuits.
