    A very informative explanation of the BlueCruise 1.2 features! I test drove a Mach-E the other day and immediately realized that its automated driver-assistance is clearly better than the Enhanced AP and FSD in my Model 3. I really liked it! I didn't have to apply torque to the steering wheel, phantom braking and ping-ponging never occurred, and I could even very slightly nudge the car toward one lane or the other, like the system itself does when passing a big-rig. I would be much happier with BlueCruise 1.2, as I'm growing fed up with my Model 3's "Tourette Syndrome." Thanks, Tom!

      I had the opposite conclusion. This proves how far Ford is behind Tesla. Looking at the map, it barely handles highways and it cuts on every turn. The HD maps are already proving illogical when he would have crashed into the closed lane signs. I would be able to use BlueCruise 1.2 for about .01% of my driving. Meanwhile, Tesla's FSD literally drove me from my house to an event 16 miles away, 2 towns over, without a single intervention. I simply pulled out of the driveway, hit enable, and parked when I got there. It drove out of my subdivision, left my small city, took the roundabouts on the county roads, etc... I would have had to take a suboptimal route just to even enable BlueCruise 1.2 for a fraction of that drive...

      @@Limit67 Welp… kudos to you! Sounds like you don't experience phantom braking, red steering wheel alarms, ping-ponging with auto lane change, paranoid merging… like we do in our Model 3.

      @@Yanquetino The Teslas far from flawless every drive. You have no argument from me there. BlueCruise doesn't do those things because it's not even able to attempt to yet. Not going to have problems with auto lane change when it can't do it. Not going to have red steering wheel alarms and phantom braking when it's willing to run straight into lane closed signs, etc...

      Really? In my experience using Beta 11.4.4, there's no ping-ponging, phantom braking has become rare, and resting my hand on the bottom of the steering wheel is as easy as placing it in my lap, and a lot safer, in my opinion. When you factor in that FSD navigates from point to point on all road types on and off the freeway (even roads without lane markings), that it does automatic lane changing, merges with on-ramp traffic, maneuvers through construction zones with hitting cones, slows for emergency vehicles, stops at stop signs and red lights, drives through roundabouts, slows down for speed bumps, avoids colliding into unlabeled obstacles, and works in heavy rain and fog, there's absolutely no question it's better than Blue Cruise.

    Lightning BlueCruise wishlist:
    1. Less ping ponging
    2. More mapped roads
    3. Higher speed limit setting. Toll roads in Texas are 80-85mph and you will get run over from behind if you aren’t at least that fast. BlueCruise limits mph to 80 right now.

    Thanks. I have a 21 Mache and use BC regularly on I35 Austin to north of Dallas. On open parts of trips the BC works flawlessly and reduces stress a lot. Ford did a great job.

    Great video! I appreciate the lack of fanboy-praise that infects so many other videos like this, where the driver obviously loves his (insert mfr here) and can't get past his bias to provide decent information and impressions. No system or car is perfect, and being aware of the idiosyncrasies is a necessary step in being able to evaluate which car is best for each person.

    Tom, wow excellent review of BC1.2 nice I can’t wait, just one thing to note @11:40 the speed tolerance settings is not new it’s been on my Mach E since released, I also had the same issue when using adaptive cruising and going to different speed zones on the same road, I wish their was a setting to maintain flow of traffic speed regardless of speed sign mode, but with that said that current feature saved me from getting a speeding ticket, so I am 50/50 about it, I think having options is better tho.

      One other thing be very careful when putting the tolerance to high, for highway it may be ok but on local Route when you have a long road that has posted speed limits that goes up and down, I notice when the speed limit goes up your tolerance setting is added to the posted speed limit, so if your Tolerance is set to 20 and you go from a 30mph and the next speed limit sign is 45mph and no one is in front of you it go up to 65MPH ! so be careful, setting 5-10 over seems to be allot safer.

      @@fullyelectric This happened to me where I had it set at a tolerance of 20 and was doing 65 in a 55 zone. The speed limit then increased to a 65 zone and next thing I know I am going 85 MPH! 😳 I now have the speed sign recognition disabled

    Thank you! I tried your 'speed trick' for the construction zones on my Tesla Model 3 and it worked! I have a known, phantom brake location and my initial testing disabled the "phantom brake."

    None of these features are missing from Teslas. They have been on my Teslas for at least 2 years. But good for Ford constantly improving ADAS software.

      If that’s true Doug then Autopilot in Australia must be different - it’s always a bit alarming how tight the Tesla can be to side traffic from time to time on the freeway- I haven’t noticed any compensation for lane drift to the side of me.

      That's because tesla puts out features unsafely using customers as test subjects. That's why their updates are hit or miss. Sometimes they make steps forward, sometimes they take steps back.

    Thank you Tom. Another great video. During the Predictive demo, you mentioned the tolerance setting in the MachE. I own the Lightning since June 3rd and noticed the speed adjustments pretty much right away. The good news is, the Lightning always had the tolerance feature. I am sure you know but I wanted to mention it. You can also turn the sign reading off if you’d like.

      Yes, that's not new, but it is tied to the new Predictive Speed feature now, you can't disable one with the other.

    I have 1.0. I was in a construction zone with no work going on. Construction speed limit sign was 45. I set BlueCruse at 65. When I left the construction zone and into a 65 zone, it increased my speed to 20 over the new limit. I thought it was running away until I realized what it was doing.

    Makes me wonder if level two (Blue Cruise 1.2) is really just navigation assist vs a higher autonomy that avoids obstacles. Even my T150 with nothing but dumb cruise and lane departure steering vibration will beep at me when I’m approaching something too quickly. I keep that on at the greatest distance (most sensitive) and it has helped a lot. Great video and analysis. Thanks Tom. 17:16

    I also found that the BlueCruise also pickups the speed limits on the off ramps. This was a shock when it did it to me for the first time.

    Good episode. I own a Model 3 LR and love it! And invest in Tesla. But it seems Blue Cruise has pretty good self driving features developing. You tell the truth as you see it while on many other channels if you say anything questioning Tesla, viewer get defensive. Frustrating they can't be more open.

    7:00 in-lane repositioning is really great when passing even minor-wandering semi-trucks or dump trucks .... and is *especially* comforting to passengers that are *closer* to those lanes. Tesla has finally in very recent times did this as well much better than any other attempts they tried.

    I own a 2022 Mach-E and find Blue Cruise barely usable because of excessive ping ponging. I'm looking forward to getting 1.2 just to make it useful. I've actually had the car run into the rumble strip when I was initially testing it out. I can't actually use Hands Free if there is any traffic around me. The lane centering / steering assist is actually less capable than my 2016 Honda CR-V which was a surprise. The CR-V is rock solid which is what I expected in the Mach-E. My Blue Cruise also makes very abrupt corrections when reengaging, so I'm looking forward to a smoother experience. My dealer says there is nothing wrong with the system. I disagree. I'm hoping 1.2 corrects all of my problems. If not, I won't be extending my Blue Cruise subscription once it expires. My Mach-E also has the Speed Limit Sign recognition and Speed Change but not the Predictive Speed-Assist. I like this feature. I don't find it to be a problem to just bump the cruise set back to where I want it. Mine won't change again unless the "recognized" speed sign changes.

      Sounds more like it could be a hardware problem with the car. Maybe the sensors need to be recalibrated.

    That Cyber Orange MME is the same one I drive (just the 2022 model). Can't wait to get 1.2. I'm on my free three years right now but I'm really thinking I might continue to pay for the feature ($600 USD for three years).

    I noticed the ping ponging is worse with the KO2’s than the stock tires. When I went back to my stock tires it will ping pongs a bit, but it’s much less than when I was running the KO2’s.

    Recently, while driving my EV, I was squinting because the sun was shining in my eyes. My car thought I was falling asleep because the cameras assumed that my eyes were closed. That got me thinking - what if I had been wearing sunglasses? The EV's cameras wouldn't be able to see my eyes. On the next sunny day, I'm going to see what happens in this case. If you still have the Mach E, can you see what it does? I'm curious.

    Has the charging curve gotten any better on this car? The main reasons I bought an ioniq 5 last year is because the charging was faster, it had ventilated seats as an option and they didn’t have any large battery pack models available

      It has past 80% but no improvement from 0 to 80%, unfortunately. I will post videos of that in a few weeks.

      @@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Please do, slow DC charging is still a major drawback of the Mach-E compared to other vehicles in the segment. I think there is still a lot more Ford could do with the charge curve (maintaining a 1C rate all the way to 80% would be nice). Ford also doesn't heat the battery up nearly as much as other brands do for DCFC.

    Great video Tom. Frankly, I've been wishing for "in-lane" repositioning for some time. I have found that I prefer to be a little left of center in the lane, and I've fought all my cars with lane-keep assist trying to put the car where I want it.
    Glad to see Blue Cruise tackle the problem. Unfortunately for me, I don't drive a Ford....

    Great info as usual did Ford happen to give you insight on when it might be released to other vehicles I have a 2023 Lightning Larriat with blueCruise and my wife has a 2021 Mach E with blueCruise not sure if that will get the update.

      No, they won't promise any deadlines, that's really normal for any OEM with a release like this. Obviously, they will be sending it to Mach-E owners first. I don't expect to get in in my Lightning for at least 4-5 months.

    Although I’m glad to see ford coming along, doesn’t tesla do all of these things already, and I own a ford f150. Adaptive cruise control on my platinum is terrible in traffic on the highway, if someone turns in front of me the vehicle will break hard and at times drop 30-40 mph almost instantly. God forbid traffic I come up to stopped traffic on the highway. But as i said im glad to see ford making changes and getting better.

    Interesting that Consumer Reports rated Blue Cruise > GM's Super Cruise. I've not heard any reviewer agree with that.

      SuperCruise also works very well, but I think BlueCruise negotiated lane changes a little smoother, and more like a human.

    BC 1.2 is a great upgrade from what it was but for the automotive magazine putting this (the previous version) over Autopilot were off the mark. Starting out with "you must be on pre-mapped roads" vs. an Autopilot system that can drive on any highway doesn't scream to me it's a better system. And while Enhanced Autopilot is a pretty good chunk of change it does and has been doing what BC 1.2 is now able to do, again, without pre-mapped roads.
    Don't get me wrong. I think BC 1.2 is awesome and looks to get better over time. I've also seen Xpeng's system in action on China's roads and if it were here in the US I think it would give Autopilot a run for the money. Hopefully Ford can expand beyond the need for mapped roads as they do not stay static.

      Xpeng's Xpilot works better IMO than Tesla's system does, but only in China. Outside of China, it's not nearly as good because the road mapping isn't as comprehensive and the system is optimized for Chinese roads, not European or US roads and traffic conditions. I've actually driven Xpeng vehicles in the US, in China, and in Europe.

    Seems like on premapped roads it works about as good, maybe as Tesla AssistedDrive (name?not FSD) Question - As each Mach E drives on the pre-mapped highways, is Ford able to update its maps? That is, doesCruse Blue update so the more it is used by any Ford, the better it works for all Ford Cruise drivers? Network effect.

      It's typically referred to as Tesla Basic Autopilot, or Basic AP for short.
      It think it works better. Tesla requires you to keep your hand(s) on the wheel. Blue cruise is hands free on premapped highways.
      Tesla will bug you every 30 seconds or so to keep your hands on the wheel, otherwise it freaks out and disengages autopilot for the remainder of the drive until you turn the car off and turn it back on.

      @@Superman-xr1oh I find it very comfortable to keep one hand lightly near the bottom side of the wheel. I hardly ever get a warning. I have never had to turn off my car. My Tesla can drive on any public road with a center line.

    Fair review.
    Tesla should make their enhanced autopilot free. I’m pissed of teslas doesn’t have auto park assistants and auto lane change for free. And you can’t still park normally without USS.

    I have hated the predictive speed assist and have that turned off. It has caught much slower speeds from side roads and going from 70mph to 50mph it actively slows down the entire vehicle

    BlueCruise 1.0 already has a setting to adapt to speed limit signs. Maybe they changed it, but it's not a new feature.

      Yeah, that's not new, but it's tied to the new adaptive speed assist, so you cannot disable it and still use the new features.

      @@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Others have said that on curvy roads the adaptive speed assist is too conservative and slows down way more than a human driver would. You might try that on some curvy back roads. Tying those two features together was a poor decision if you only wanted to use one feature but not both.

      @TechnicalLee You can't separate them in the settings. I can only report what I experienced on the roads I drove on here in New Jersey (routes 80, 78 & 287, the Turnpike and GSP).
      Maybe those who had issues were on more challenging roads and driving at higher speeds?

      @@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney The issues were on curvy two-lane highways with lane centering engaged. Such as a 40 mph curve on a 55 mph highway. It would slow down to almost 40 mph (semi truck speed), about 10 mph slower than most people in cars would drive it, annoying drivers behind. Arrows come up on the display by the speed limit when it's going to slow down for a sharp curve, not sure if you saw those pop up during your 1.2 testing. If you didn't see the arrows, you probably didn't experience the full predictive speed assist feature in action. It looks ahead at the GPS data to predict a curve, vs. reacting to the lines. BlueCruise 1.0 also slows down for curves, but only after it "sees" the curve with the camera (too late for sharp turns). 1.2 will start slowing down way ahead of time before it can see the curve.

    The biggest annoyance I’ve had with Blue Cruise is when a vehicle changes lanes in front of you at freeway speeds - Blue Cruise brakes immediately, and then accelerates since the adaptive cruise distance is achieved almost instantly at 60+mph. It is uncomfortable, and hazardous if you have vehicles right behind you.

    The Consumer Reports article was nearly a hit piece. If you look at the weight of their ratings, the driver annoyance feature has the same weight as whether the program can steer. And the CP rating of tesla's driver annoyance feature brought their rating down. Not saying Blue Cruise is bad, but that CP isn't really a good rating company any more.

      Public, mass transportation makes sense...in highly dense cities where everyone is closer to everything else.
      It won't the solve the last mile problem though.

    No car will ever be Level 5 capable in all driving conditions. There are conditions where even people should not be out driving. Under sunny conditions, with well marked roads - sure. Some rain or light snow - perhaps. Downpours, heavy fog or blizzards, not a chance.

    I still can't See the point of those systems.
    I can appreciate assistance for unintended lane departure or collision.
    For the rest. A Driver must actively drive! Else take an Uber or a train.

      Makes a huge difference on long distance drives. Rather than having to actively control speed and direction you just sit back and monitor it. Not for all types of roads but certainly for everything highway. I can do a 1000km trip without fatiguing with is due to the supersmooth and quiet electric drive, the forced breaks for charging (yes folks.......it's actually a good thing!) und the Level 2 assistance (honestly, I don't want any more than that) of my EV (Old Tesla S with AP1). Would not buy a car without it (and I come from air cooled VWs 😂).

      @@RedBatteryHead You obviously have no own experience. A lot of accidents out here is drivers nodding off, veering off road and crashing. Simply doesn't happen with Autopilot. Because you fatigue less to start with and if you do the system keeps you on the road and stops the car. I rest my case now, everybody is free to buy and drive whatever they're comfortable with. Amen.

    very very limited, the detailed mapping required for each stretch of road is rediculously complicated, and a change in the road or speeds means all the mapping has to be re-done.
    It will never map all the roads in the car markets, they will change before others complete, this is why China has given up on this.
    Great for the few roads they do map, but so limited.
    When will they do Australia, this century ? and at what cost.
    No Way.

    Given Tesla is using Google Map for Autopilot/FSD speed control, it is not quite accurate to say Tesla does not use "pre-mapped'. It turns out that errors in Google Map appear to be the source for Tesla 'phantom brake' events. Google Earth Pro shows 'road construction' signs at reproducible, Tesla phantom brake locations.

      Pre-mapped in this context does NOT mean navigation mapped. Blue-cruise requires 3D mapping for every approved road. Phantom breaking on Tesla had nothing to do with nav maps whatsoever. It was noise in the vision system.

      @@bwilson4web Agreed, but phantom braking was not map related, it was vision related. Tesla is aware of the road changes in mapped speed regions, and slows for them appropriately. phantom braking is perceived occlusions

      Tesla uses MapBox maps (OpenStreetMap) for drive path planning, not Google Maps.

    I have a 2022 F-150 LARIAT LOADED with the Blue Cruise, It is much in need of this Update, It is Very Quirky in turns and has me take over a LOT?? I can be driving down HIGHWAY 280 NORTH in California and It Goes in and Out of the Blue Cruise way too often, it is really frustrating and Irritates the Crap outta me. It work's, and it's kinda Cool, but it it's All over the Place unless I am traveling in a STRAIGHT LINE, and even then it will ask me to take control / Hold the Wheel way too often? The real Bummer is this....... We PAID $1995.00 for this Feature, and..... STUPID ME I Also Paid FORD $2500.00 Over the Sticker Price???? And..... This feature is Just way too Intermittent for that Kind of Up Front $$$$$. FORD should give us back at the Very Least a FULL YEAR Of Blue Cruise "ON THEM"!!!! Not sure We are going to "GIVE UP" more of our Hard Earned Money to them for the Next go around when our Subscription runs out in 2025.... They need to STEP UP And Give us something back!!!! B.T.W.     Now this is truly hands free driving on the highway, something that Tesla, with all it's alleged "superior tech" doesn’t even have.
    And before any of the stans reply. Yes, I know, the highways have to be premapped. On roads that aren't mapped, it reverts to a hands on, lane keep assist system. So it becomes like Tesla's basic AP.

    Lane changes in Tesla are extremely smooth these days as well but the FSDbeta is *atrocious* at doing lane changes automatically. There is very little rhyme or reason and it is quite annoying. One example is that if you have a left turn coming up very soon that the Tesla may move to the right lane and it doesn't even seem to be speed based. Completely illogical and annoying. It also spuriously turns on a blinker like it is going to do a lane change but then doesn't. Even the latest FSDbeta is doing very annoying and non-human things. -- many people on forums with the same examples.

      You are comparing apples to oranges. BC only works on limited access highways and can not turn off of one road on to another. While FSD can turn off of one road on to another, it does sometimes have poor lane selection. However Tesla is still improving the FSD and is more advanced than any other driving software.

    Consumer Reports is funded by the the Ford Foundation so no surprise Ford ranks high. Pre-mapping can't deal with construction zones that are not mapped, unlike Tesla's Autopilot/FSD which has a higher level of intelligence to recognize cones and other objects

    I can see that Blue Cruise is a good step is hands free driving. Except for the designated Blue corridors doesn't seem anything special. One big concern is construction zones. Many construction workers are injured or killed each year by drivers who do not slow down in construction zones. I WANT TO SAY YOU DEMONSTRATED LANE CHANGE IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE. YOU EVEN COMMENTED CRUISE SPEEDs UP IN A LANE CHANGE ALL THE TIME YOU DEFEATED THAT VERY SAFETY FEATURE. Ford engineers did it right but by allowing 20mph variant in speed control you defeated it. YOU ALSO DEMONSTRATED HOW TO EASILY BE DISTRACTED AS YOU MADE THIS VIDEO. Even with construction only at night, not everyone knows this and it likely bit you in your night video.
    PLEASE RESPECT CONSTRUCTION ZONES. Best not to use Blue Cruise in construction zones until it is much better.

    Interesting that Elon ignored highway driving with AutoPilot for 5 years
    while working on FSD in the city - not making that much progress
    when he should have done the opposite

    One thing I might guess is self driving in America will not be get to full self driving even if Europe will get to full self driving. Simply because American drivers do not know how to drive carefully on the roads .😂😂😂😂
