When it comes to these fishing videos in Australia, you are without a doubt, the best presenter. You cover every aspect of the technique you are demonstrating. Great video.
Hi Alan, I'm James from the UK 🇬🇧 I fish piers as I'm disabled, I have never fished for squide and was wondering if it is much like what you do in your kayak ! Your video is fantastic thank you very much it was extremely helpful. Kind regards James Tight lines 🎣🙏
Hi James, I hope you are well. Thanks for messaging. The technique is so similar when land based fishing of piers and jetties. The only tip I would give is when fishing of piers and jetties try and look for helpful signs like ink stains, or change of colours in reefs or weedy zones and fish those parts of the pier or jetty. The technique is exactly the same as this vid. Hope that helps best regards Al
@@fishingmad Thank you so much for the advice Alan it's greatly appreciated, could I ask for some more information please. In the UK 🇬🇧 the sea is quite dirty and can be deep as well, would I be better at low tide as it's roughly two meters deep and sometimes you can see under the water a little bit also what colour jig's and wight should I use as tide run's fast on the flood, I hope you can understand what I'm asking about. Thank you so much for your response back to me and I hope too hear back from you soon Kind regards Alan tight lines 😉😁👍🙏
Perfect timing mate. I’m going out this weekend squidding off the yak. Never been before - always just fishing , thanks champion - this was awesome to watch
Loving the way that you explain all the technical points and set ups. Love it. If you ever come to Wollongong, New South Wales, look us up will take you out for a flick.
Thanks for the Informative video Alan. I found that squid were constantly attacking my soft plastics when i was targeting flathead and snook etc, so I ordered some 14 prong Squid jig spikes online. I've used a big bagging needle and threaded leader through a few different soft plastics (so as to try keep the natural swimming action of the soft plastic rather than pierce it with a spike jig and make it stiff) Ive tied the Squid prongs onto the leader at the tail end of the plastic and a loop at the nose end that i clip my swivel too - I've had excellent luck with them. :-)
That's brilliant, well done. Yeah 100% anytime I see squid following my soft plastic I will pull out a squid jig and most times they will come straight back and take the squid jig.
Our main squid run here in Rhode Island is May and early June, though the fall run is in full swing right now. I've always used YoZuri 3" jigs, but I've seen people use ones half that size. Usually, pink and light green always work the best. The boat I go on does nighttime squid trips in the spring from 7pm to midnight, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. I learned something the last time I went out. The males are the ones with the long grabbers, while the females lack those. There are no size or bag limits either.
yes I did find it very helpful and I really appreciate it that you're putting us on the right track today out how to catch squid, you've cover all the important things which I really appreciate thanks so much for sharing... be very well our friend.🎉
Your very welcome, glad you are enjoying the content. Just keep in mind for land base fishing for squid like piers and jetties a longer rod around 8 foot can be really helpful for casting distance. I have an 8 foot 3 inch rod which is perfect for that stuff.
No problems, have a look at the Daiwa Emerledas stuff which is really designed for land based squid fishing and the NS Blackwater which is a brilliant affordable option.
I have used similar clips and lost jigs because the eye wasn't completely closed allowing the line to come out of the gap. Pinch the eyes up with pliers to close the gap.
KMart sell a 10 pack of Jarvis Walker squid Jigs for $16, including 5 razorbacks, a range of sizes and colours. Might be worth testing them. I find they work well.
What a fantastic tutorial. I've tried on a number of occasions to catch Squid - land based - and all I seem to pull up is weed attached to my Jig. If the Jig is let to rest after a couple of sharp tugs, then it has to rest in the weed and that's all I tend to pull up. Pulling my hair out.
Thanks Michael, in that's case maybe consider dropping down to a 2.5 size squid jig and even retrieving slightly faster, as long as your getting your jig down towards the bottom in weedy areas you'll get a few.
Yeah it can be much easier on a boat or kayak because you can drift and cover lots of ground and also really focus on the shallow weedy areas. You can still catch plenty from piers and jetties like st Leonards, Blairgowrie etc
The egi rod I used here is a tad longer. Egi rods are generally made longer for extra casting distance and blank is quite whippy so you don't pull squid jigs. that being said the 1dfr rods can be used for this purpose no problems and also great for soft plastics too.
Another fabulous and very informative video. I’m learning so much from watching your videos. Can’t wait to give squid catching a try. Can you tell me what the best months for catching squid. I’m in Port Stephens NSW at Nelson Bay. Once again many thanks
6 foot 6 inch, 3-5 kilo class. No issues with size 3 jigs and just ok for 3.5 jigs. Thse rods are now discontinued which is a shame. Ive since been using the NS Blackwater Blackhole II
Hey mate, Thanks for your advice. Regarding to 3-5m depth, does the sea weeds catch the jig? I normally cast the jig and let it drops, however it will be caught by sea weeds. That's a bit annoying. Cheers mate.
Yep, very common you will remove seaweed from the jig quite a bit but its necessary as squid like to hold the bottom, you can always work the jig a bit faster or drop to a smaller size if it becomes to annoying
Have a look at this which should help fishingmad.com.au/article/fishing-kayak-buyers-guide-2022 plenty of good option, just remember generally the more stable ones are the more expensive ones.
Great video brother , was wondering if you would be able to share some of those markers for if it’s not too much trouble my ol man really wants to go out on the kayak soon for calamari so is there any chance you get me a few marks so I could go have a crack ? Much appreciated
Yeah pulling in weed will happen quite frequently, If it gets to much ill head to slightly deeper water or drop squid jig size, but fishing in thick weedy areas is all part of it.
The motor I use is the FPV 28lb trolling kit. It fits directly into the Hobie Mirage drive system. You can see more details about it here th-cam.com/video/naacjIuByeM/w-d-xo.html
Hello Allan. A Merry Christmas to you and yours mate. I look forward to your shows and cannot get enough of them. Mate; Can I ask a favour please. It is is not "TOP SECRET" can you let us viewers know the name of the locations you fish at please? This spot you are fishing at looks superb.
Hi David, Squid are a great all year round species to target. A great species to target this upcoming winter when lots of the other species go off the bite. We chatted about this quite a bit on our members podcast last week.
Thanks again Alan. I have never been fishing for squid so looking forward to giving it a go. I bought a couple of squid jigs last week. We head off around Australia in about 8 weeks. Are squid found around most of Australia’s coast?
Thats very exciting, Yes squid are found all over. Just need to look out for the shallow weedy areas, Google Earth can be an awesome tool for this when looking at new spots.
Thanks I chase them everywhere, Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington peninsula, west port and top end of PPB. Queenscliff is a brilliant spot for them and some really big ones in that area too
Off piers and jetties the only difference is to use a longer rod so you can cast the jigs out further. Something like a Daiwa Emereldas. There is an article on the fishingmad website which details our favorite landbase squid spots landbased around melb. Places like MtMartha Rocks, StLeonards Pier, Queenscliff Pier, Sorrento Jetty, Flinder pier. Jump on the website which has plenty of helpful details
Great video mate. Had a follow from a squid at Port Melbourne pier last year when I was flicking a lure. Where's the best place for squid up around the Port Melbourne area?
Port Melb is quite a tricky spot for squid as there isnt a huge volume of weed, even though I have seen squid on odd occasions. Usually if im targeting squid locally im heading to point cook, avalon places like that. Land based ive typically gone to places like MtMartha Rocks, StLeonards Pier, Queenscliff Pier, Sorrento Jetty, Flinder pier.
If you’re going to bend a fishing rod by hand, you should always bend it from the tip, as if you flex it from any lower point, you risk, damaging, or even snapping the rod. I used to work at a sporting goods store and had plenty of customers snap rods while testing the flex. Otherwise great video and thank you 🙏🏼
quick tip to kill a squid is just squeeze hard behind the eyes and watch it go white. been doing it for years and when taking it off the jig. one less tool and one motion
You pay for what you get.. when it comes to Squid Jigs the cheap ones don't last, weights fall off after 12 months & are inclined to float a lot longer but a good for Curtin situation .. the more expensive ones last longer and swim better .
