Hi Al, finally got around to picking up my rigs from Jason at Southern Edge Lures. Amazing he lives just around the corner from me. This video has been such an inspiration and demonstration to try things outside of the norm and step away from what we are traditionally comfortable with. Can't wait to give it a go and highly recommend people get in touch with Jason with the understanding he is a one-man operation so give him a some time with orders as everything is hand made. Just like yourself, his passion and knowledge for everything fishing is infectious and he is a ripper bloke at the same time. Keep up the great content mate!
Hey Al, tried these rigs off the St. Leonard’s pier over the weekend after realising I forgot my squid jigs. Caught a heap of grass whiting and a few leather jackets so can’t wait to get out there and actually chase some KGW. Thank you for sharing this unique method for targeting whiting…plus many other species as well.
Went in at Hillarys on Sunday chasing a feed of whiting with paternoster rig and squid bait. Boated herring & skippy & threw back heaps of under size pink snapper. We could see the schools of whiting and they were sucking the squid clean off the hooks and did not hook up one. On the way back in I was wondering about targeting with soft plastics and this vid came up on my feed, so good timing, thanks for the detailed vid.
Alan, I know it's a late comment but this was a very informative video. We're at Monkey Mia at Shark Bay in WA and have had some great sessions catching the local sand whiting and other species using the Berkeley Gulp Turtleback worms. What a great bait. Thanks Alan 👍
Great video , used exactly your rig/technique on west coast of SA. Didnt even need to twitch , not only did work extremely well but attracted the bigger fish compared to bait ....thank!!
Hi Alan Stinger hooks! Great idea but I had a problem buying the swimlockz. Only available in monster sizes and no good for small jigheads. My fix was to feed one end of a leader through the small eye on the jig head and then feed it back through the same hole. This gave you a loop on one side and two free ends on the other. I used fluro but your choice. Take the loop and form a simple Palomar knot over the jig head. Result is a solid knot which won't move. Take one of the free ends and tie a stinger to it and to the other end tie a loop knot or a swivel. You can have this end as long as you want. Most informative vids you have here Alan. Cheers Alan H
Hi Al, yeah i also found the swimlockz jigheads to be way to big. That's why i had the guys at Southern edge lures custom make them for me and im also making and expiramenting with some of my own now. You can certainly experiments with the length of the stinger and positioning of the hooks and knots. I always found most consistent for catch rates was 6 to 8 cm down from the top of the jig head which also didnt seem to impact the plastics swimming action to much.
Hi Alan, let my say it:wow Whiting on soft plastics never seen before and I was totally ignored this. Just awesome, you are a genius Alan 👏 😀 ciao ciao have a good one buddy 🤗👋👋

I recently fish KGW around St Leonards and probably will try at Point Lonsdale next time. Really appreciate some tips on that!

Hi Allan. They say no run no fun for KG whiting. How do you get these down to the bottom without sinker and running tide? Fish closer to slack tide? Will certainly give it a go.

Hey Allan I’m getting a new reel and I don’t know if I should get it spooled with braid or fluorocarbon because I want to be able to skip soft plastics and cast light lures and soft plastics. What should I do?
Its a great question. Its much more challenging in parts of West Port this technique because of the very strong currents. You either need to do this during slack tide 30 minutes each side of tide change or pick an area that's sheltered and shallow where your jig head has a chance of hitting the bottom. Get those things right and you can catch plenty with this techniques.

@@fishingmad am after all information can get just starting back after about 30yrs absence from fishing so all this soft and hard plastics is very new to me again thanks.
Great to see you getting back into it. We also have as members area which is full of helpful tutorials which may also be helpful fishingmad.com.au/member cheers
Hi Allan, I am planning on getting that Shimano t curve premium but I don't know what reel to pair with it. what reel are you using in this video?
Hi Charlie, I was using a Shimano Sustain 2500. You may also want to consider the Vanford as an awesome cheaper option.
Great video, I'm learning!
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi allan, do you have any tips on chasing winter whiting with hard body lures?
Hey mate, I don’t know weather you will see this but I was wondering if you had any good fishing spots for port Philip bay accessible by kayak. I’m from Ballarat and look at going for a day trip over the school holidays to get some pinky’s, witting or squid. Thanks
Hi Joshua, yeah there is many great spots accessible by kayak like places such as Campbells Cove, Mornington etc. There is a FishingMad members area which has a map that shows over 100 kayak launch spots and 100 GPS marks of productive kayak fishable areas by a kayak it might be worth checking that out fishingmad.com.au/member cheers
@@fishingmad thanks mate will be sure to. Also as it turns out I will also be going to port Campbell for 4 days so I should be able to some squid and whiteing as well. Thanks for responding and loving the vids keep it up 👍 and lake Wendouree is amazing at the moment for reds and trout
Nice Vid Alan 👍🎣
Thank you !!
Good vid mate, what size jig head do you put on those worm plastics?
Always for me the hardbodies for Whiting, Bassday Sugapens and even a lot of the shallow diving hardbodies like Atomic Cranks, fitted instead of back treble with little size 8-10 assist hooks. Hit the flats with these and Bob’s yr uncle.
Agreed in the shallow flats those options are dynamite and such a fun way of fishing.
what jighead size would you use if you dont have an assist hooks?
1/8 2-0
Thanks Alan great video
Glad you enjoyed it !!
I love the turtlble back worm. If nothing else bites, the fish don't bite.
Agreed Turtleback worms are on of my favourites for a whole range of species
Is there anyway i can maybe contact you about this soft plastic fishing me and my mate fish in Busselton
Feel free to reach out to me directly at alan@fishingmad.com.au cheers
Hay Alan, I can't find the TT SWIMLOCKZ JIG HEAD
In smaller sizes
Ive had to get mine custom made from Southern Edge Lures as the TT headlocks ones were to big, or run a leader/trace from the same eyelit on the jighead
Mate do you think that technique would work on sand whiting? I'm in Sydney and there is no king George here.
100% will also work on sand whiting
Cheers mate for sharing
No worries
Does this work from the beach surf fishing??
Yes 100% it does work from the beach, just need to increase the jig head weight if you need more casting distance
Can't wait to try on sand whiting in northern nsw
Awesome !! Should work great there
Think this would work in surf gutters?
Yep 100%, may just need to use a heavier jig head if its not getting down to the bottom
Cheers Mate.
Great vid, I’ve never tried to catch whiting on plastics I’ll have to give it a go tho looks like lots of fun! How’s ur electric motor going? :)
Yeah catching whiting on plastics is amazing, my preferred method. Just need to pick the right locations with low current. The electric has had its ups and downs ive pretty much got it right now, will have some content to share on that next week.
Great vid mate
Thanks 👍 !!
Just watched the rest of the vid and you answered my question !!! 1/12
We’re did you get your gear from?
The jigs heads I had made up from Southern Edge Lures
Cheers mate awesome vid
Are they making more of those jigheads?
G'Day Alan, great content as always. I'm on a mission to get a feed of Whiting on surface lures at the moment. How many of those plastics do you go through in a epic session like this? ~FishOn
Thanks !! In this session I went through 2 packets of turtlebacks which is pretty common when chasing them on plastics. I always have 3 or 4 packets on me just incase.
BCF sell 1 worm for $11.99 or 3 worms for $29 lol
Sensational mate! Great video . Do you advise bleeding whiting or not necessary ?
Thanks !! Yeah i usually bleed and put them straight on ice.
@@fishingmad thanks legend!
I am wondering where to buy the assist hooks from. Does anyone know where to get them?
I had them made from Sothern Edge Lures, look them up on Facebook and send Jason a Direct Message. Cheers
@@fishingmad thanks.
Where can I get those jig heads frome whith the stinger at the back of it
Could I got to bcf or anaconda to buy some
I get them made from Jason at Southern Edge Lures he has a Facebook page you can lookup
I think the technique should work if you’re just using a normal jig head and tie the assist hook line into the main eyelet. At least this is how I am going to try it and see if it works
I must make that rig I'm learning to filet whiting
Can’t get the 4 inch camo turtle back anywhere…… been trying for 2 months to get my hands on some…..none in Sydney😏
Yeah no idea what Berkley are doing at the moment. We cant get stock of them anywhere either.
Great video a 10/10
Thank you !!
Great video
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it
Is it not a swimlockz jighead ? Size 1/0
Yes same concept, these ones were headlocks modified but the swimlocks are very similar and would work just aswell
Hey allan, I’m looking to buy a new lightweight rod for whiting, squid and maybe pinkies. My price range is 150 - 200 max $250 for rod and reel any suggestions?
Remarkable Alan. You’re some fisherman…
Thank you Eddie !!
what plastics are they?
That's crazy!!!!
Thanks !!
First cast trying this technique and it came back as if something had eaten around the hooks with big human teeth. Damn leatherjackets. That said if I put a hook sticking out of a sinker I'd probably catch the cheeky things - they were chasing my sinker later after they'd eaten all the bait 🙃
