New BMW M5 review. It's as heavy as an SUV, is it still worthy of the M5 badge?

- The new BMW M5 PHEV has been much criticised for being heavy but what's it like to live with in the real world?

I would never have expected the interior of high end BMW and Mercedes to look like a teenager's PC gaming setup
Lol 😆 🤣 u killing me
Came here to say this exact same thing!
You can almost hear the Gen-Z employees of the BMW marketing division exclaim "Do we HAVE to do the M5 again?" 🙄
@@revenanke3132 bang on. The people that can afford these cars are adults ha ha
...... could have been worse ....... ( Rainbow colours or Pink ........... 😬 )
A teenagers PC gaming setup looks better.
Mobile phones are distracting whilst driving, so here's a nightclub instead.
The interior is awful looking and flashy
Come on man?😂lol 😆 😂 🤣
😂😂😂😂
@@takenbystorm 😂😂
These "Tech" interiors will date so badly. They almost feel dated now.
The interior is like a 1980s wine bar
haha true
I hope things will go the way of the digital watch - very cool and everyone had one to start with in the 80's, but after a few years you wanted an analogue watch again and digital watches looked cheesey
Techno bar.. think Terminator 😂
@@andywright1634 Tangent: I will never understand the "smart watch". No one needs one when the smart phone and the analogue watch already exist. Or perhaps I'm just an old git lol
Newbie drivers will love it.
It just looks hideous. I've owned the last 4 generations of M5. This does nothing for me. The chavvy interior, massive grill, naff carbon is all just awful. BMW really have lost the plot. The M5 was about subtlty. This has none. Needs over 700hp to be slightly slower than the last one the lardy turd! I have no issue with hybrid, its still got a V8. But in all other respects is a massive fail. And just to make it even worse, lets leave it in undercoat grey. 🤮🤮🤮
I helped my brother on a job and the lady had her kitchen, walls, cupboards, dishes, cutlery handles and more all in that grey. Horrific.
That being said it looks great on my 1978 Mini Van. But that's it. Where I draw the line 😀.
It's everywhere in moderns. Silver, white then these grey primer colours uugghhh.
@@edgarbeat2851 😃😃😃😃😃
@@edgarbeat2851 Yup. 50 shades of grey. Saw a 911 in the dealer the other day with PTS (Paint to Sample) of 9k+ in a grey which was not distinguishable to the grey available for (an already stupid) 1k.
I can’t imagine someone parking the car and turning back to glance at it and admire its beauty..
I remember Clarkson years ago describing the M5 as having a "lardy backside and his hatred of all the stupid switchgear..... except one... "THE M BUTTON!"
Especially in that concrete grey colour.
True,😢 I saw one in white...
If u going to get this thing, just go for the darkest colors, like with the m3, hide as much as possible 😂
I would.
E92 m3. I look back every time i park it
This 'M5' is symbolic of all that is wrong with modern cars
Electric Turbos by Porsche is epitome of Marketing gone wrong along with apathetic consumer.
Overweight, oversized, overpowered, overpriced, overly complicated tech, and (subjectively) over-designed. All of this equates to an overly isolated driving experience that lacks the authenticity of yesteryears cars.
most truthful comment of the day!
In particular: the German car industry!
Overpowered, heavy, complicated, too expensive, no manual trans....the list goes on.
That interior looks like a 1980s Aiwa stereo.
Yes! I used to sell them.
Yup. Genuinely sad when you compare to a high spec E39, which was a truly luxurious car when specified well.
What a beautiful comparison 👏👏🤣🤣🤣
@@rare6499The best generation they ever made, especially in LeMans blue.
No need to do 80's Aiwa dirty
the state of that dashboard
I don't know about guys, but I absolutely hate this trend with massive screens in front of you. You are there to drive, not play video games.
But not using a hands free on your mobile phone is distracting.
It's hiddeous: 🤢 What on Earth has happened to the great company of BMW from the past? 😖 Brilliant vid, as ever, Harry! ☺️
Bmw is really astonishing. Every new model makes me think: "this is the ugliest bmw ever made". And it keeps on and on.
I thought this was a review on HMS Queen Elizabeth for a second
Bit harsh. The carrier is quite subtle... in comparison! 😃
You could buy a really good E46 M3 for the cost of the 'ultimate pack'.
Finally not a sell-out review unlike some BMW content creators out there, tells it how it is not afraid of losing press cars or "ordering a new daily driver" for content
I think I know who you are talking about. Is he not a brand ambassador? If so I guess it is on the tin.
@ He's a much a brand ambassador as anyone who buys exclusively one brand of any product. Only collab he has for sure is with Michelin
@@kidneyfailure4620 - Not sure what you are digging at - Harry's verdict is the same as Joe's . Joe also said it was heavy on paper, but when you drive it the weight doesn't come across as much as you would expect.
those content creators are bottom of the pile randoms, you have to be careful of channels like carwow too German owned lol
Did you actually watch this review? He was positive
Anyone that buys this instead of a lightly used 2022 model for almost half the price needs to have a word with themselves. The previous model seems far more desirable by almost every metric - starting with the looks.
Regarding the BoE inflation calculator, this ignores the fact that wages have not increased in line with inflation (and far from it). Great video Harry as always
You wages might not have increased with inflation - many have though ! Especially those dropping £110k+ on a car
The looks of the F90 was really boring and the interior I didn’t like either…
@@Cars-k8eI think the majority will be leased by business users so although I agree with you if bought ‘privately’ I’m not sure your BMW will be that bothered. As long as there is an M5 in the lineup for executives to pick/boast about down the pub, that’s all the really matters.
I did have a word with myself. And I’m happy with my 2025 M5. Thank You Very Much 😁
The lightshow interior reminds me of an Eighties nightclub in Wrexham.
😂
@@cuberjoe16 Come on Elleen.

@@carlwinslow4175 That reminds me of a joke I can't write in here! 🤣
Looks like a bloody battleship!
I don’t understand whether this is meant to be a compliment or a demerit 😂
@@saranath0317 It's not a compliment...
it is Battleship grey after all, and fantasists can pretend they're in one as they intimidate other PUBLIC ROAD users.
I wish it did! I'd be very happy if it looked like the Tirpitz - although that sank pretty quickly too.
Yes!
Looks like an SUV as well.
Modern cars are all bloated as hell for safety anyway. I have a 76 taunus and a 2012 astra j , astra looks like a literal crossover in comparison to taunus (taunus is also d segment astra is c segment)
It's almost there.
Will anyone with eyes actually claim that the interior isn't anything other than a horror.
Those bulbous front seats with the gray panels already look dated.
No.
it's vile IMO.
That alone puts me completely off ever having one
This car is a collection of everything that is wrong with the current automotive bloatware industry. It's ghastly, it's HEAVY, it's overengineered and it won't last. The pinnacle of automotive design is something like the Exige V6 or a Clio 182 or the Alpine A10 or even the M5 V10. We could build truly great cars today but thanks to insane regulations and rabid climate hysteria we get this - a true dinosaur, destined for extinction since the day it was born. It's a dead end of progress and it's truly unsustainable. Now bring on the asteroid because I don't think we can go back to our senses on our own any more.
Funny how you say this is overengineered and won't last and then mention the V10 M5 out of all cars 💀
@@MadDaCubethat car was amazing. I mean it did break down a lot etc. but i was lucky to sit a few times in it when my friend bought it. Back then I think it was the only v10 sedan. The launch controls were crazy, but then my friend sold it within a year or two because it broke down a lot i think if I remember correctly
@@MadDaCubeno it's not funny. There are still many V10 M5s on the road today and it was over engineered in the most exciting way.
This is a compromise car
What are you on about with climate hysteria
It's an electric car that carries around its own 4.4 L v8 generator under the hood. Do these people not understand how conservation of energy works? What's the point of all this nonsense?
The best Sunday evening show!
Best comment but my mind read your username slightly differently. My bad.
Sunday morning show
HG is the best thing to happen to Sunday evenings since the best years of Top Gear. Thanks Harry 👍
Close but that award goes to Matt Armstrong
It’s not painted grey , it’s carved from a solid block of lead 😂
Should have the option of a turret
With 88mm anti-aircraft gun.
And a depth charge launcher
Battleship primer grey.
£110k plus. Who would?
looks like its still in primer
Drug dealers... It'll match the grey window frames and door on their house.
Bismarck grey!
You can always count on Harry for a well made car review 👍
Somewhat surprised to see Hankook tires on a £110k+ car
That's way towards the bottom of the list of reasons I wouldn't want this car! (Hankook are actually pretty good tyres)
If it had a normal dash & interior sales would probably double! So I am keeping to my M6 V10!
With these cars getting larger and heavier, our roads are going to become unbearable.
un-drivable, how the chief of Nottinghamshire's roads isn't in prison is beyond me.
BMW have got this ugly styling thing nailed! Great review.
I think it's worthy of an ///M7 badge.
Indeed, if we see the M5 as an M7 and the current M3 as an M5 it's not so bad. Only thing is that don't have a true M3 anymore since the M2 is now on the same platform and almost as heavy as an M3/M4 :(
@@ericuyttebroeck absolutely agree. Wish there were a true smaller/lighter ///M car again.
M750 maybe
Yeah, their mistake was moving their line up, up a class.
I think it's worthy of a 💩 badge.
All the interior "mood" lighting, literally for entertaining driving toddlers.
2400kg 🚨🚨
M5 is no longer a car it's now a car toon
I just don’t see how anyone can think that’s a good looking car. There’s no sculpture, or width, or personality. They can add striking features to the bumpers all they want, none of it is purposeful.
I am surprised it didn’t pull the other cars out of the garage with its gravitational force.
'you never tire of the hit'... An image of Harry in the 60s saying that after lighting up a spliff😁
This car leaves me absolutely cold - not something you want to say about a new M5...
We saw the old M5 beat the new one in drag races AND brake tests in Carwow, and we heard Chris Harris say he was not allowed to drive it on a track, I think that adds up that its not a performance car as the old M5's. The good part, I liked the rims, and the sideprofile. The color was nice. The rest not so much. The old M5 will be a collectors car.
You know what, how fast it is in a. Straight line just does not interest me. All modern cars are fast in a straight line. But they're so heavy , sterile and expensive
The old one was chipped. Watch the whole video.
The V10 was peak M5
M5 is a big luxury car obviously its going to be boat on track
It's built for the chinese market. Which has shrunk... their deigns were penned before the tarrif wars imagine an extra 25 % added to the price
The answer is no it is not
ok boomer
Boomers smart.
Don’t worry about it, you’ll never drive one
Idk the r44 m5 looks amazing imo. Just like the g8x platforms it has to be molded
I’m left wondering who wants this car. M5’s were just so desirable once upon a time. It’s just so damn ugly. Inside and out.
Agree wholeheartedly
I detest these screens !! If I want to put my car into sport I move the stick to the left, if I want heated seats I press a button !
Thank you Harry. This car needs to be returned to the factory for disassembly and decommissioning. Start over BMW
There's a Royal Navy warehouse somewhere missing a load of grey paint.
Who would ever buy this car? High horsepower and torque, heavy, but not for track use. Why would anyone need this horsepower driving on the road? My less powerful 911 Turbo would probably beat this car on the track.
It’ll sell. Has flashing lights.
Same people who'd pay extra for that color...
flashy lights, big power, latest toy. to quote the Wako Kid "you know... morons"
You gotta understand that most people who are into cars don’t track their cars. The most they do is talk about their power, features and modifications, and maybe do some high speed pulls on the highway. This car is perfect for that.
No m5 ever was quick on track. Anyone who would want to try such would need an M3 or alike
Give me the v10 any day
Nice, however, very problematic
@mrman8516 it's worth it for the sound alone, just remember to get the rod bearings done
M5 has been my dream car for 25+ years. I could never really afford the premium above a 323ti, 550i GT, 535d, and 540i. Now I can finally afford it, and I checked it out in person. The rear is fugly, and its an hybrid... it's tech will lose its value in a few years.. After looking at the RS6, E-AMG, and this M5.... I picked a Porsche Panamera GTS (4L V8 twin turbo, non hybrid, and hundreds of kilos lighter). I lam loving every second of it!
Big fat car that in town driving won’t be easy, cost prohibitive for many and that gaudy interior- my first experience of driving BMWs we’re E30s with its simple driver centric interior and maybe I am old but sadly this company has lost its way for me personally. Great review as always Harry. Highlight of a Sunday evening. Keep up the fab work. PS - please don’t forget to ask people to like, subscribe and add comments…
Another great video, thx Harry 👍. Surprised there was no mention of the Hankook tires (besides road noise being possibly tire related). Guess that's an endorsement of how good the 'cheap' Asian tires are these days, but I'm still surprised that they're OEM on a car like this...
I noticed that too, seems a bit out of place on a >£100k car.
Inflation calculator is a good point….but interest rates then were a lot lower. However, looking forward to Harry’s thoughts on this car.
Just after the 14min mark, " You never tire of the hit!" Classic Harry
It looks Massive! And heavy, that’s crazy how much it weighs!
7:45 press and hold the set button Harry.
It’s too tall. Looks like a crossover
I think the answer is given by the market already, a very new second hand previous gen M5 competition is the same price as this.
This car simply does nothing to me. I am positive that it will drive amazingly, but not a single fibre of me wants to own it. I am a bit sad about that, because I turn my head at every 80s to 2000s BMW still on the road. Guess I am getting old, looking back all the time.
E39 M5 rides beautifully. That ride is unforgivable given the weight.
E34 M5 or better yet E34 535i manual.
Theres hope on the horizon as from 2026 the Euro NCAP rules will require physical HVAC amongst other buttons for a 5 star safety rating.
“The overuse of touchscreens is an industry-wide problem, with almost every vehicle-maker moving key controls onto central touchscreens, obliging drivers to take their eyes off the road and raising the risk of distraction crashes. New Euro NCAP tests due in 2026 will encourage manufacturers to use separate, physical controls for basic functions in an intuitive manner, limiting eyes-off-road time and therefore promoting safer driving.”
Euro NCAP
Not that im in the market for a new M5..... but I agree with you on the BMW M car steering wheels. But most of my friends and owners ive spoken to really like it.... so I guess thats why it stays haha.
It has grown to be a 7 series over the decades, the 3 series is now a 5 series sized car and so a better sized car for UK roads.
So with all the flashing lights and electronics is it the Ultimate Viewing machine!
They should round off the corners on the screen (7:25). Soften it up a bit...jeez.
Saw the wagon version of it, and I must say, it looked really good unlike the sedan.
Agree they look much better. A loaded wagon must be 3 tonnes.
Time for the Dacia Jogger test as a palate cleanser Harry!
If defined by the criteria of the past, then no, it is not worthy of the M5 badge.
If judged by limitations of the present, then yes, it is worthy of the M5 badge.
The colour is Storm bay grey it's an £1100 option also there is a shortcut to turn off lane departure etc by idrive you can also configure M buttons to switch them off in the settings you want.
The colour is inspired by the battleship Bismarck, with which is also shares it's size and weight
Thank you for using Nm when mentioning the torque.
How about using watts, too, instead of horses.
I love the circa 1982 small-town disco pub lighting scheme of the interior
‘The Place’ in Hanley, Stoke on Trent - a great nightclub in ‘82, not as many lights as in the new M5 mind you…
Your subscriber number has gone up by about 100,000! Great video as always. When I first say that bit between the 2 rear diffusers it was really annoying me. But then it started to work with the rest of the angles at the back
Sunday nights with Harry’s Videos and Chris Harris offerings are Ace!
I would say better on here now than watching TopGear on a Sunday night…. Between these and some motorcycle reviews I now have minimum 2 hours of good viewing ….Cheers Harry 👍
that interior is glorious, what a belter. This 'M5' is symbolic of all that is right with modern cars baby
Hold set on the wheel for 3 sec. And the speed warning is off.
Hey Harry, thanks for being my fav bedtime story teller. Keep making these great vids!
2400 kg. 1000 kg more than the 911 S/T you had on the channel a few months ago.
Yes but BMW does not produce sports cars anymore. They produce only SUVs, sedans a wagons now.
Harry should be at 3 to 5 million subs
Harry, I feel this was a fair review of the new M5. It is too big and heavy, but we have little choice on that if you're at the top of sedan performance vehicles. Cheers 🇨🇦
Hold the CC set button for 3 seconds to disable over speed warning
Hold the set button on the steering wheel to turn the speed limit warning off Harry!
Beyond the weight, these things will be a long-term reliability nightmare given the newness and complexity.
I can imagine it's not very healthy for the engine when you, after 30 miles of driving it electric, fully floor it.
It needs to be sailed back to BMW for decommissioning.
Makes me appreciate simpler cars. The grey does suit it much better than the yellow in the CH video.
The electric motor is "in front" of the gearbox, so it indeed does real gearchanges, also in electric mode.
All of a sudden the recently released XM doesn’t seem to be that heavy after new M5 released.
Would like to see Harry test the XM.
Harry ROCKS !
This M5 is technically and dynamically immense but I have reservations regarding both the styling (rather bulky and brutalistic) and the excessive and distracting driver's controls. Just because these things can be added to a car I have to ask whether they should be added to a car. We are fast reaching the point where a car is serving to distract the driver from actually driving safely.
The Carwow video where this one lost in every race shows how very much BMW got this one wrong.
It like it. Things have evolved. Just this in black or blue with a black interior. Get rid of the piano black bits inside and it's a winner for me
As you pulled out just now, the car reminded me, with that colour of a Royal Navy stealth warship!! (some drivers would love the stealth part) !!
Reviewers always criticise the thick steering wheels on BMW’s but for me I’m the opposite! I hate thin steering wheels and think BMW steering wheels are the best!
Who want those crazy HP in today’s cities that full of traffic jams and speed cameras
The previous generation 5 series, specifically the B5 Alpina is peak 5 series. Even Jezza agrees! 600BHP, classy interior, comfortable ride and understated.
I share a lot of the criticisms everyone has, but it does have a pretty impressive overall envelope of capability. I’d imagine the touring even more so. Like many modern cars maintaining and restoring g these is going to be daunting down the line.
But it is £114,000.
Gimme an Audi rs6 for that price
Can only imagine how rapidly it'll depreciate when all the plastics parts start to break. I'll wager after 3 or 4 years, it'll be 20 or 30k. What a waste.
While listening, how elegant the Jaguar XJ6 is in comparison and devoid of aggression
XJ is a simply breathtakingly beautiful piece of design, Everything modern cars aren't.
Ugly, looks cheap, overweight and overpriced, basically like every other new car.
This will never become a desirable classic like an E34 or E39.
EV style screens make it look cheap inside.
M5 now refers to the metric tonnage.
Those birds singing in your garden 😊
Harry hasn't seen the BMW display key 😂
You can turn off the speed limit warning on all new BMWs by holding the set-button on the steering wheel for 2 seconds. :)
