I'd suggest that the dealers are obligated to do what McLaren tell them to. ie the indies are not beholden to McLaren Factory in Woking so can do it differently without the risk of losing a multimillion pound franchise

McLaren corrosion issues on bodywork for such expensive cars seems crazy. But their 10 year body work protection warranty should help ease most new car buyers concerns. Harry is without a doubt the best car reviewer anywhere, the TV, internet, magazines, anywhere.. His professionalism, knowledge of cars , mannerism, and well spoken easily understood narration are just pure car reviewing perfection. Just an all round amazing guy and like many before me, I will sing his praises. He is the best there is, and we all love him...I hope he realises that.
I’m not sure dealers trying to sell used mclarens are going to thankyou for that one Harry 🤣 The first 10 minutes explained the whole reason people steer clear and why they are that much cheaper than an equivalent Ferrari or similar. I wouldn’t expect body corrosion on a 10 year old Fiesta let alone this thing so to say it’s good value when factoring in the costs of running the thing I find a little conflicting but that said I’d agree it looks great and honest content as usual.
The fact McLaren did not design, or have the supplier design, the accumulators to be refillable from the start is just insane to me. Business love to make out how green they are but when it comes down to it they do everything possible to consume as many raw materials as possible. Expecting owners to shell out £1500 for a suspension recommission every 3 to 4 years is absurd. Also not entirely convinced a 12v lithium battery costs £1800 either...
Great stuff Harry a very realistic overview of Mclaren ownership. The guys at V engineering are absolutely superb. What they don't know about Mclaren's isn't worth knowing, they totally de-mystify the whole Mclaren ownership proposition, making servicing & repair bills very sensible & none scary . I'd not go anywhere else having had a bad experience at the main dealers who tried to pull my pants down trying to have me replace items that didn't need replacing luckily I found them out before just accepting & swallowing the bill......The no B/S straight talking from Paul & Steve at V is a total breath of fresh air, highly recommended.
From a lithium battery wear perspective, they are best charged to no more than 80% which ensures a longer life. This is applicable to all lithium batteries, and minimises the creation of dendrite growth. I mention this, if you keep it changed with a battery tender when not in use. Sometimes this can be set on the software or firmware.
Interesting (possibly reassuring?) that while Harry's older cars tend to be continental, his newest cars are English - Jaguar, Lotus (now sold), Range Rover, and McLaren. I understand that Harry has involvement with some of these companies to a degree, but that appears to be genuine interest and appreciation of the product. It's good to see that UK marques are still capable of creating genuinely interesting and competitive cars.
A seal goes bad and they replace the gear box?!? A spring cracks and they replace the whole shock because it's more convenient. Thy're ripping off customers.
@@pkpropertysolutionsltd701 Those things very, very, very rarely go bad while the car is basically new and still under warranty, so they can afford to do it every one in a million. However, you still have to pay for 6K for a regular service
Excellent long term review. Baffling that dealers replace a gearbox for the failure of a seal etc. Those 'boxes must get re-used in other cars but the customer must be paying high prices for that business model. McLarens are very lovely cars.
It’s not just baffling, it’s bloody insane and daylight robbery. If they shared that fact when you were thinking about buying one you’d run a mile . A gearbox must be well over £25k ?
Love it !!!! What a review,, love my 650s , had few issues , because I bought from a terrible dealer. Fixed all the issues now , mainly caused from poor maintenance from previous owner. Love the car and the brand and definitely want to keep.
When the review units for NA has parts not working that doesn't really inspire confidence for sure not to mention used ones are double the UK price here as well.
Thank you Harry for another spot on video of… something most of us enjoy watching but may not experience. I hope and pray one day I can get my feet deep into automotive experiences you experience. Thank you sir!
So glad you are still enjoying it, they are amazing cars. Just had my 675LT serviced at V a few days after you. I'm 5 years and 16k miles into my ownership with not a single issue and service costs the same (or cheaper) than Audi / Bmw. It even costs less to insure than my Boxster! Never selling mine there is nothing comes close in terms of performance, handling, economy (40mpg on m-way), reliability and quility. Anr they are British and look stunning.
Love your 650S spider. I have found the GT to be totally reliable (2022). The standard suspension eliminates the maintenance issues of the 650/720 suspension and it has the great steering and acceleration needed for driving thrills. It seems as "sorted out" as you describe the 650S and will hopefully have cheaper long-term maintenance cost as well.
It seems to me that McLaren have got right what's important for a real fast car. It drives on rails, light weight, and plenty of power. They got that right with the original MP4-12C. In the hands of a good driver it should make epic progress.
Thanks for the update on your McLaren. I would definitely get the lead acid battery, it seems more feasible than the lithium ion battery. Keep up the good work Harry.

for the amount of money these cars cost there just shouldnt be "known issues" this stuff should have already been rectified via quality control well before leaving the factory! Why O why do people put up with shoddy construction.

@vika0194 because it's not worth the cleaning. I clean, spend time and money, once I hit the road, it's filthy, again, so better not to do it. So interesting to hear about the servicing details and how that McLaren dealers lack the finer repair skiills of specialists in some areas. Harry, you made a great choice, worry not!
I've had my '19 570GT for 18 months now, and this video definitely chimes with my experience. I also use V Engineering and find them reassuringly knowledgeable and reasonably priced. I do think McLarens are great value in the UK, half the price of anything comparable and a chunk cheaper here than any LHD market. Also the HPAS gives them a lot of the road feel that made older cars so engaging, even at sensible speeds. An anomaly that's great news for enthusiasts!
Great update, thanks Harry. Solidifies the 650S at the top of my wish-list, but it may remain a bit out of reach, we'll see… this video wouldn’t have helped residuals as a buyer! 😆 & agree satin grey wheels for the win 👌

I didn’t live that far away from a dealership when they released the 12c, and every one I used to follow down the road had enough water in the rear light cluster to support swimming fish.
The Mclaren really is a great car, especially as you explained all the quality niggles some other youtubers moan about. It is a great looking car especially in this lovely colour. The content so far on it was amazinng.
I worked for a feller once that owned a McLaren. I asked "which one?" expecting him to proudly announce "it's a whatever!". Instead he apologeticly muttered "MP4-12C". I said "nice!" then later went home and googled. "Oooh kay, bit of a lemon then".
Don't think I'm ever getting in the position to buy one,but having the information on them is useful and very interesting,, nice to see and hear that you are happy with the purchase, general pleasure of owning such an iconic vehicle,☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
It's a bit like my MGF. You need to keep your eyes on the suspension accumulators and you can open the rear window to listen to the not so musical engine.
Interesting to refer to a third party as a specialist. Specialist at saving unnecessary bills by the sounds of it. Great content as ever H. McLaren and Aston are my two favourite brands.
Great review 👍 Can’t disagree with your views on early cars (MP4-12C). However, I really enjoy having just that. My 2011 12C is #0065. But having now covered 50k miles, I would also describe it as ‘sorted’. I’d be more than happy to offer you a test drive and comparison 👍
Very nice Harry. See it came from Baytree. Grew up a couple of streets away. It used to be a sweet factory on that site when I was a kid. They've got a nice Honda NSX in stock there at the moment. A bit tempted. Also Hughes Bros next door are an old family business BMW specialist. Will be taking my M140i for a gearbox service soon. All the best.
An interesting insight into the running of a supercar most of us will never experience but one that actually gets used!😀 I'm not that clued up on the Mclaren range but Harry's obviously put a lot of thought into his choice of the 650s. Realistically you've got to expect costly servicing and repairs with cars like this but that's no reason for not seeking out VFM and expert advice from the independent "specialist" companies out there. When it comes to problems and upgrades, in many cases they know just as much, if not more than the franchised dealers and you can say that about other marques, not just Mclaren. 👍
That is an amazing color and it looks great with the calipers. And i normally love silver wheels, but i do agree that the present color should not be changed.
So, everything you've said I can say with my C8 Corvette convertible, expect it's cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, no corrosion and more reliable. No one in the U.K. seems to understand the value of the C8 in North America, which essentially democratized the mid engine supercar.
Not completely comparable, but my Honda EG Del Sol / CR-X had the rear glass that could come down, totally loved that experience with the rear glass down in any weather. The Miata RF has rear glass, but no switch to be able to lower just glass, it's connected to the roof down arrangement.
Great insight Harry ! Glad to see its not been too painful ? We are looking at possibly a 540c maybe even a 570s for next year though they will be from that troubled period from them so will know what to look for.
Excellent video/ buyers guide, Harry! I’ve also commented on one of your videos, about the huge, upcoming increase, in car road tax, only the McLaren GT, is on the list, I saw! £2,500 excess’s, on tax, is coming, worth a video, if you can, please 😊🙏🏻👍
Lovely car, cheap to run. Change spark plugs every 60,000 miles, amazing. I used to change the plugs in my bikes every 3,000 miles until a man from NGK told me I was wasting my money, they should last at least 16,000 miles.
Recently did a track day in a Ferrari 458, my dream car for years after driving a new one. However, the 570s literally blew it away. Amazing car, just buy it from a dealer with 12 months warranty
My 2010 Golf with 150k miles worth £1000 that has lived in the UK all it's life has no corrosion on the body nor the underside. For me that body corrosion on the McLaren is unacceptable for a car that has probably never seen salt. I'm in the Motor Trade and the general consensus is the more expensive the car the worse the build quality and longevity, the engineering and tech may be top notch but the rest of it is crap.
Aluminium is way harder to stop corroding than steel….. admittedly low volume sports cars just do not have the budget or the same interest as mainstream manufacturers to prevent it tho
my car has a lady in it that says you're over the speed limit also. And that you're driving too close; and warns you when you've been at the pub for too long among lots of other useful petty reminders!
Unfortunately, aluminium oxidation is one of the downsides of owning an aluminium car. Had it twice now, on my Alpine A110’s wheel arches, and it’s only six years old! McLaren’s are well known for it, too.

NIce to see that Mclaren decided to use the same accumulator (sphere) system pioneered by Citroen back in the 1950s.
Crazy to have so much corrosion after 6 months, that’s just insane at any price point.
Seen countless videos about the quality (or lack of) of McLaren stuff.. it amazes me they sell as many cars as they do honestly.
After 6 months of his ownership. He said the car is 10 years old.
@@sessionstuI understood that, but the car has less than 10k miles on it and probably was sitting at a dealership/garage for most of its lifetime
10 Years!
“Renew engine Intake Sound Generator (ISG)“ every 2 years - LOL!
Don't think I'm ever getting in the position to buy one,but having the information on them is useful and very interesting,, nice to see and hear that you are happy with the purchase, general pleasure of owning such an iconic vehicle,☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
Rear window is a nice feature. I agree.
Not a huge fan of McLarens but this one is amazing. Love the colour, love the wheels and the contrasting yellow brake calipers look awesome.
Excellent content. Keep up the good work on your channel. Regards, WR4K.
What a great bit of kit. Even taking into account the minor irritants (which are all sortable).
It is a glorious looking car in a fantastic colour. I really do like it and am glad your happy with it Harry.
It's a bit like my MGF. You need to keep your eyes on the suspension accumulators and you can open the rear window to listen to the not so musical engine.
That P1'esk engine sound is brilliant.
Thank you Harry, extremely enlightening and helpful. Cheers, Mike
10:24 it's extraordinarily disappointing the dealership will only replace the entire transmission and not a single seal
If I had the money it would be my choice .Thanks Harry for filling the sunday evening slot that top gear used to fill keep up the good work ..
Like a Citroën sphere then.
Interesting to refer to a third party as a specialist. Specialist at saving unnecessary bills by the sounds of it. Great content as ever H. McLaren and Aston are my two favourite brands.
Great review 👍
Can’t disagree with your views on early cars (MP4-12C). However, I really enjoy having just that. My 2011 12C is #0065. But having now covered 50k miles, I would also describe it as ‘sorted’. I’d be more than happy to offer you a test drive and comparison 👍
Daily driven? Or do you just drive a lot
@ not a daily driver, but such a great car to drive, that i use it whenever I can. It’s also recommended that these cars are kept in regular service.
Paul derby in west mids is the man for steering wheel re trims 👍
please can we have more videos like this showing running costs etc really enjoyed this
Very nice Harry.
An interesting insight into the running of a supercar most of us will never experience but one that actually gets used!😀
I'm not that clued up on the Mclaren range but Harry's obviously put a lot of thought into his choice of the 650s.
Lovley timing after their unexpected constructors title last week from the F1 division.
Absolutely spot on Harry about buying what you have always wanted but you keep looking 👍🌲

The McLaren special operations badge is cool to me considering the history
my car has a lady in it that says you're over the speed limit also. And that you're driving too close; and warns you when you've been at the pub for too long among lots of other useful petty reminders!
another great video has always harry mrs m and Charlie 👍
Unfortunately, aluminium oxidation is one of the downsides of owning an aluminium car. Had it twice now, on my Alpine A110’s wheel arches, and it’s only six years old! McLaren’s are well known for it, too.
Wonder why you don’t hear about corrosion on the old NSX’s?
Not a supercar, but VW Phaeton (a super car) suffered from galvanic corrosion
@@overbuiltlimited Good question, my 2000 3.2 NSX didn't suffer at all in the 8 years I had it.
Aluminum doesn’t oxidize if it’s properly protected. No one outside of the UK should buy these unless they have a bottomless wallet.
Polish and PPF would help the carbon bits low down. Pretty good nick for 10 years and hard driving!
little nod to Chris Harris podcast there...nice17.38
The MPC 12 has the McLaren reputation here in the US too. Steering racks etc
I see this one being the opposite kind of regret as selling the Zonda.
Wouldn't go near one of these.
Corrosion, lights falling out and windscreen surrounds coming loose. What shoddy build quality. Hopefully the mechanicals are better engineered.
they aren't
You are right…. He should have bought an Audi... If you do not understand performance you never will.
@@edinburghrose oh I understand performance alright. I just don’t understand substandard manufacturing integrity, especially in a car costing six figures. How silly of me huh?!
Horrendous
@@edinburghrosewhat’s perfomance got to do with build quality, it really is unacceptable in a modern car to have this huge amount of corrosion and that the lights are expected to fall off. I’m totally appalled.
