      Clearly, it requires specialized techniques. Only a true sword genius would think to strike with the flat of the blade. Witness the birth of...Bug-ido!
      You laugh (hopefully), but I know that mosquitos are a heck of a lot more realistic enemies in my life than armored medieval soldiers. We've found a sword art that's actually useful! Unfortunately, there are already much better and more efficient weapons available than swords, but when has that stopped people before?

    • @jameswoodard4304
      @jameswoodard4304 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      While a rusted, crusted shovel blade makes a...good, I guess...test for blade damage, it's not much use for anything else. If he had struck that shovel blade against any rough targets instead of a thin edge of metal, it would be much more likely to break in pieces than the reclaimed spring steel.

    I have a tip for you for dealing with the mosquitos. I've lived in Michigan my whole life, and the only two things that have worked for me are scented candles (make sure they burn hot and smelly), and bug spray. You don't really have to go overboard with the bug spray at all- just put some on your collar, cuffs, and brim of a hat if you like and they won't bother you. Black flies and horseflies are a different matter altogether though- those fuckers don't give a shit about any sort of repellant

    I dont really like the trranslation of "Bauernwehr" to "Peasant Defense" , since the word "Wehr" was used as a general term for weapon. The term Bauernwehr was also sometimes used for polearms, it was more a general term for weapons used by peasants. "Wehr" is also where the modern german word "Gewehr" has its origin, which is used to describe firearms, most often long guns.
    You can also find "Wehr" in poems and songs from the 19th century, where it stands for different types of weapons.

    That's some really abusive testing, the only way to make that type of handle construction stronger is to swap out the brass pins for corby bolts or loveless bolts, to add an element of mechanical tightness, so it's not relying on epoxy bonds to retain it's strength. But there is a down side to that as well (When throwing your sword lol) because if the scale didn't pop off, the shock might have caused the wood to actually split and crack apart, leaving just the bolts intact, which would be more of a failure than just a single slab flying off.
    There's nothing wrong with using brass handle pins or mosaic pins, I use them they are plenty strong for normal use, they only failed because you threw the blade at a hard target, with a pile of rocks under it no less lol.

    I've seen a few fantastic bauernwehr made by James Elmslie based on originals he documented and measured in museums and private collections. Really interesting weapons. Not many other makers doing them.
    Though he does often do the more classic style with a circular Nagel and straighter blade.
    Keen to eventually pick one up myself if I can ever find an antique affordably.

    Being a blacksmith, in terms of appearance, what you would do is reprofile the entire blade (including the tang), refit the hand scales to fit the now smaller tang, and then refinish it. Now you have a brand new, slightly smaller and lighter version of what you had.
    The reason for all of that is, if you simply remove metal on one end, the point of balance is now different, not by much, but it's different. Considering how much skall ground away, you'd have to take away even more than originally needed.
    But then again, that's all for appearances sake, obviously skall wasn't too worried about appearance and what he did was completely fine ; )

      There are woodprints from the years before the great german farmers revolt of 1525, the scabbards of many Bauernwehren looked, as if a Bowie knife would be inside.

    Seems to be a perfect gardening tool to remove branches and roots etc.. Much more elegant than a short axe. It even has a beer opener attatched to it😂. Especially for that porpose the narrow handle is perfect to use with gloves or to wrapp old cloth or bandage around- i remembee my grandparents had a messer like this for the garden with a bandage wrapped handle. Btw, it is not like a messer it is definitively a messer without question. I would buy it, if i had a garden...
