  • Mark Hacking spent his entire life spinning a massive web of lies. After five years of marriage, he was living the life of a completely different person and eventually his wife discovered that he was no longer the man she married. He tried to spin more lies, but it wasn’t working, so he took one last drastic step to ensure his house of cards didn’t come tumbling down.

Is it wrong that when I first saw Lori I thought, "Damn, she is way too pretty for this guy." Also, I will never understand compulsive liars who tell huge obvious lies. If I got caught lying about going to medical school my soul would just leave my body due to humiliation. His complete shamelessness is a sign of a sociopath.

Funny, I never lied as a child nor a teen. It's later that I got caught up in drugs, first prescribed, then over the counter (BDD, depression, anxiety, constant stress, all bc my face suddenly got an illnes). When I lie, it's about small things. Except for thievery from my parents, for my drug habit, for about 4 years (caught many times), until I got stabilized around 4-6 years ago. Still fighting, but slowly giving up, especially with the social healthcare level, which is low. I'm gonna die before I reach, at best, 40. I'm almost ready for the eternal voyage, though I do hope for an afterlife. Maybe when you die your brain slows down the perception of time so much so you are stuck in the dream - your new life, maybe this is my 100th slowdown. Hope - mother of all fools.

Scott says he’s innocent . Last I read was that he was awaiting a new trial and the d.eath penalty no longer applied
Quite a few people now believe he’s innocent . A woman said she was his cousin and said that the p.olice failed to interview people who’d seen Laci , in the park and around the area & so it couldn’t have been Scott who k.illed her . (But I read that p.olice had spoken to them and they were mistaken as it wasn’t Laci) .
Also she mentioned Laci’s dog and the boat . She thinks it’s a serial k.iller who k.illed Laci . She said there was some more evidence proving his innocence. She was very polite very nice and quite sad . I felt really sorry for her . For us all it’s just another true crime case but for her she’s living it
I believe Scott’s guilty , judging by the evidence .

Also, prior to that time, I would drive him to work every day, and pick him up, because he didn’t have a car. On a really bad snow day, I called the business and inquired if they might be closing early so I can pick him up. THEY NEVER HEARD OF HIM. I'm Indigenous American, and I had the regrettable experience of making friends with a Mormon classmate in middle school. One day, she introduced me to her church friends and, without so much as telling me their names, one of the girls full on spit in my face and called me a slur. Obviously, I stormed off before I did something that would get me expelled. My friend called me that night, crying, and explained that this all happened because she had had to "confess the sin" of befriending an Indigenous American person to her congregation... because the Book of Mormon literally teaches that we are the descendants of actual, literal demons (which is "why our skin is red"). Imagine having to unpack all that as a 13 y/o.

Now, the church DOES believe if your family and marrige isnt sealed in the temple, you will be seperated forever in the afterlife (? why would we be denied contact with our families in heaven?); But unmarried women can go to heaven with no issue.

One thing that wasn't pointed out was the fact that Mark sustained a traumatic brain injury while working a summer construction job when he was in high school or right after. It made it so that he had a hard time being able to do coursework in college. His father was a doctor and his brothers were all in the medical or legal profession, too. Mark felt the need to keep up appearances, so it started innocently enough, thinking he could get school back on track, but he ended up dropping out. But he kept pretending to be a student, having Lori and family members proof read papers he downloaded off the internet for his "homework". It came to the point where he was supposed to be going to medical school, to keep up the family tradition and he chose somewhere far from home. I don't know how he thought he could fake graduating from medical school, I doubt he considered that far in advance - he had 3-4 years before that would happen.

I went out to search for Lori each day for Lori, sometimes on more than one search a day. I met Mark's family, who were wonderful people and also Lori's father, who was a pillar of strength, I ran into him on missing persons searches later that year. My first search out at the canyon I fell in step with one of the search dog handlers and learned that Lori had never been at the park that day - she never set foot out of the car. On my way out, a reporter stopped me and interviewed me and ended by asking if I would be back the next day. I hesitated, not wanting to disclose Lori hadn't set foot there at the park because it might reduce the number of searchers in future days so I replied I'd see how my feet felt in the morning. I concluded that everywhere searchers searched was one place Lori wasn't. Then bits of information implicating Mark started coming out. I knew she had to be dead and that the families were both coming to grips with this new reality and that if gave them comfort to see the thousands of people who searched daily and if nothing else, I could help in that respect. The searchers were well meaning, but some took to bringing back potential evidence to the search center, an absolute no-no. At least my groups had me to educate them on the rules of evidence, chain of custody, and so forth, and they began to defer to me to rule on whether something was of possible evidentiary value or not, we had one of the only tips which required further investigation by search dogs. Then the search came to an abrupt halt and the core searchers felt bereft, wanting to help, but having no way to do so any longer.

Im sure it meant a lot to them that so many people come out to help. It's tough being in a situation, especially like this, where you want to help, but there's not anything you can really do. Sometimes all you can do is lend an ear and offer support just to let them know you care and are available.

She went "missing" in July and her husband was arrested roughly two weeks later at the beginning of August.... how did you run into him on missing searches later in the year? Also, I've been on searches and it's well emphasized to never touch potential evidence, only to place markers and call for law enforcement. Actually, it was don't touch anything that didn't obviously belong in that environment but err on the side of caution and just don't touch anything if possible. It's amazing that you seemed to be the only person who knew that and saved the day!

As someone who lives in Salt Lake City I think I should clarify something.
I'm not Mormon. There are Mormons who believe the woman is 2nd class, but this idea is largely dated. Just like it was in the 1920's. There are still hardcore families out there that teach this idea, and there are branches of Mormons that aren't mainstream (such as flds) that also teach this, as well as polygamy.
That being said, by and large mainstream Mormonism is not this way. They teach more modern principles of fairness and equality. The wife is honored and respected. Husband's can be the stay at home Dad, it's okay. But women cannot hold the 'priesthood' which is a holy power granted to individuals for healing and whatever. So it isn't pure equality, at least not yet. Great video as always.

Dunno how related this is to the video, but I was just reminded of it: the first Sherlock Holmes novel, a study in scarlet, the case is solved in the first half of the book, and the second half was about Mormons traveling to Utah (it was a justification for the murderer to do what they did). Anyways, just cool having the historical connection to each case, you rock.
