- Mark Hacking spent his entire life spinning a massive web of lies. After five years of marriage, he was living the life of a completely different person and eventually his wife discovered that he was no longer the man she married. He tried to spin more lies, but it wasn’t working, so he took one last drastic step to ensure his house of cards didn’t come tumbling down.

In the event the abuser is nearby, you can ensure that you don’t get caught trying to get help.
If you are having feelings of harming yourself or someone else or even just need someone to talk to, please contact your local mental health facility, call 911 or call Mental Health America who operate the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. Is it wrong that when I first saw Lori I thought, "Damn, she is way too pretty for this guy." Also, I will never understand compulsive liars who tell huge obvious lies. If I got caught lying about going to medical school my soul would just leave my body due to humiliation. His complete shamelessness is a sign of a sociopath.
Lol " my soul would leave my body due to humiliation" I love that . I'm going to remember it and use it every chance I get .👏👏👏👏 well done my friend .
Good one 😄 on a serious note when I saw the photo of her smiling in the blue robe (graduation photo?) I was amazed at how absolutely beautiful she was with that smile and all those gorgeous curls. She was way too good for him
I'd love to be as shameless irl.
Just sayin 🤷🏽♀️
Ppl who live a life mostly a lie probably don't get embarrassed tho they seemingly remove and ppl from their life by any means necessary, atleast that's what i seem to see over and over in these type stories
I didn't just think damn she's too hot for him. I think its because we can see just by looking at them that she was a genuinely lovely, bright person, beautiful inside and out. Whereas you can see looking at him hes just not that kind of decent person. They just look wrong together
“Hmmmm…. The one day you don’t go running with her, she goes missing. How convenient!!”Omg I love this guy. 😄
You can hear the anger gradually increasing in the guys voice as he walks through the terrible things Mark brought upon his wife. I love your narrating skills!
@@jamie.777 Lol yeah because lds isn’t? Cult.
Sounds like this guy had always planned to "kill himself". He kept pushing off the future Antilles he could no longer ger get away with it. Suddenly, this loser is tasked with facing his BS. Uh oh.....
It'd be better if he kept that crap to himself and just give facts not his personal feelings about the individuals documented. #imo
@@polskipopart I prefer it this way. It makes him stand out and he always keeps it professional while dunking on the scum of the Earth. If he made sweeping judgments, forced religious/political views down our throats, or judged the victims, then I'd have an issue. Instead, all he does it attack the logic and morals of the criminals documented, keeping it focused on their qualities.

🍃 Beautifully stated . This is one of my fave channels. 🍃
I remember being like him, maintaining lies to make myself seem a lot more admirable to my peers. Lying to those I love to gain their trust and make them feel proud of my accomplishments. Ahh 4th grade.
You had me in the first half, I’m not gonna lie.
I was all in and couldn’t wait to find out how you overcame being a pathological liar… growing up.😂😂😂 hilarious! But, to be completely honest I was disappointed. Laughing but disappointed! 😂
He is a sociopath
The problem with those lies is that they catch up with you. Once everyone realizes you’re full of crap they’ll lose all respect for you. It’s much better to be yourself , but you were in 4th grade so we’ll cut you some slack. This guy never stopped his childish behavior
Funny, I never lied as a child nor a teen. It's later that I got caught up in drugs, first prescribed, then over the counter (BDD, depression, anxiety, constant stress, all bc my face suddenly got an illnes). When I lie, it's about small things. Except for thievery from my parents, for my drug habit, for about 4 years (caught many times), until I got stabilized around 4-6 years ago. Still fighting, but slowly giving up, especially with the social healthcare level, which is low. I'm gonna die before I reach, at best, 40. I'm almost ready for the eternal voyage, though I do hope for an afterlife. Maybe when you die your brain slows down the perception of time so much so you are stuck in the dream - your new life, maybe this is my 100th slowdown. Hope - mother of all fools.
I LOVE how this guy tells the story and just "slides in" his own opinions. I could listen to him forever.
It is a great style - no real difference in voice pitch or inflection between cold hard facts and opinion lol. I like it.
Yes. The sarcasm is perfection!
Lucky for you, this isn't reporting.
Thank you for explaining the MLM thing! I've noticed that in a lot of these true crime stories, people are members of the LDS church and they are also involved in MLMs. I thought that was a weird combination, but now it makes total sense.
Scientology!!!
The Mormon community in Australia is just the same re MLMs. My ex brother-in-law was always obsessively selling their schemes and we had many a disagreement. Vitamins, special cookware, vacuum cleaners, cleaning products etc etc. The worst thing was his insistence that these items were all perfect and MUST be purchased - at great cost.
@@argosz3928 we should all buy from BigW….. god forbid we buy from family instead of multinationals
I also noticed the number of doomsday cults that comes from that "religion" (as far as I'm concerned it's a cult as well) but usually they're only obnoxious, knocking on doors but we don't see them as they're not popular here. I never saw a church or anything related to them here and that's a good thing. I only know about them because of the case that take place in USA or in central or western Canada.

"Yes, let's focus on the fact that she disrespected him, not the fact that he's a liar. Which he fucking is." Love the narrator's pure sarcasm here.
I just came to the comments to say exactly this! I love how he says it like it is.. heaven forbid a “woman” should insult a man in his home! nothing says “manly” like sitting around playing Nintendo while your wife is at work to pay the bills! The narrator is right! Mark was a lying loser, while Lori was a decent woman who deserved better!

@@tinak.356 ikr. I just discovered him a few months ago and he doesn't sugar coat crap. Love him.
Why? It's literally a person saying serial killer bad. It's obvious.
Knowing him and having seen almost every episode, it’s obvious he only curses when he is genuinely disgusted with someone. When I heard him say that it gave me chills.
I love that you ripped this man a new one at around 20 mins. Spot on. I love this channel and your attention to detail. Your narration is TOP TIER.

I think the saddest thing is he was always going to kill Lori. Her discovering his lie just moved up his timetable. RIP Lori you deserved better
I feel so devastated for Lori, she and her baby deserved so much better, it’s so sad that she was treated with so much disrespect
It’s very sad to know that these type of crimes seem to be increasing in number,I just don’t understand that level of hate and self centered ness
Your right. This guy was meant to love & protect his wife. How dare he take her life. Bastard.
At least she didn't suffer or feel any fear & that she passed while fast asleep.
God bless Lori.
I feel the devil has plans for Mark.
@Jason Carlson thanks Jason! I meant ‘devastated’. Don’t care much for the rest of your comment but otherwise it was great!
Hacking was so concerned he'd be the "talk of the town," but wouldn't it have been better to be talked about for being a liar, than it would to be talked about for being a liar AND a murderer? I sincerely can't understand what his thought process was wherein he convinced himself that killing his wife would somehow keep his secrets safe.
This case reminds me of one that was just in the Wisconsin courts. A young man, Chandler Halderson, killed and dismembered his parents because his lies were unraveling. His trial was televised. Might be a good future "this is MONSTERS" episode, no? Thank you for all of the work and detail (and snarky humor) that you bring to every episode.
I totally agree!!! I watched that trial. What a sick individual.

@@jorgegomez3691 Did kill Dad. Mom disfigured & lost sight in one eye, etc. but she made it & first said he did it but later said he didn't. He was found guilty anyway.
I don’t understand people who kill to cover up their lies. You’re going to get caught, then your lies will come out anyway, plus now you’re going to spend the rest of your life in prison. Wouldn’t just being a little embarrassed by being exposed as a liar be a much better alternative?!
makes me think of parents who murder their spouse/co-parent to get more custody of their children. that's going to be the first person they investigate and now the poor kids are orphans who have to grow up knowing one parent murdered the other. nothing gained and so much irreparable damage
I guess they are just so into themselves that they always think they get away with their lies and with a murder. Probably never noticed that people were well aware of all the little lies but never bothered to call them out on them.
Unfortunately in his mind he wanted to completely obliterate his wife out of his life. Out of sight out of mind.
Sociopaths are not capable of forethought or rationale. They operate on their ego or lack thereof.
Just like they believe their blatant lies will be believed, they probably believe they won't be caught out as the murderer. Delusional, selfish thinking.
Love your cutting snarky observations. Thanks for being a stand for victims and survivors

So many murders happen because of lies
It’s not the lies , it’s the person behind the lies .Somebody who lies a lot and hurts others without a care are nasty people imo .. Sometimes they’re psychopaths and narcissists . So they have no qualms about k.illing someone as long as they get their way imo
Yes it’s bizarre that people don’t just admit they lied explain why they felt they had to lie and then apologise to the people you hurt with those lies?
@Donnell Okafor That's true, but considering Mark killed is wife I think that definitely puts him closer to those categories then most lol!
@Donnell Okafor Sure but people are better informed than before . True not all m.urderers are psychopaths and not all psychopaths m.urder but psychopaths commit a disproportionate number of murders .
. It is not possible to determine how many psychopaths exist in society . Most people aren’t going to a go to a psychologist and have a PCL-R test to determine if they are a psychopath.
ThePCL-R test measures a distinct cluster of personality traits and socially deviant behaviors which fall into four factors: 1) interpersonal, 2) affective, 3);lifestyle 4) antisocial.
There are different types of psychopathy , criminal and non criminal . And there are different levels of psychopathy . The scores in the PCL-R for those who are psychopaths vary greatly, revealing that very high to low levels of the condition exist among those who have it
@Donnell Okafor isn't it. Why not just go ahead and name them what they truly are and that's EVIL
He killed his wife to avoid being known as a liar, and now he's known as a liar AND a murderer. Great plan, Marky boy.
I know you’ve been doing it for a while, but Thank You for adding kilometers and kilos to your videos for us that don’t know miles, pounds etc. It really makes a difference in understanding everything fully in a story!

Once again a story I’ve never heard of!! This channel is one of the best because you never cover the same ol’ over covered cases! It also amazes me all the details etc that you put into your videos! Appreciate ya “This is Monsters”
Its a famous case with several documentaries and books written about it, and even a TV movie.
Well I'm sure you've never heard of my brother being tortured and burned to death, you don't know everyone that kills or gets killed. There's ALWAYS a story behind it.

This was a very well publicized story at the time. If I remember it came right on the heels of the Laci Peterson case and there were a lot of articles on the number one cause of death to pregnant women is not some medical complication but homicide at the hand of their partner.
This was Laci Peterson, just in Utah. I was a soldier when I heard this story and immediately knew he did it.
Scott says he’s innocent . Last I read was that he was awaiting a new trial and the d.eath penalty no longer applied
Quite a few people now believe he’s innocent . A woman said she was his cousin and said that the p.olice failed to interview people who’d seen Laci , in the park and around the area & so it couldn’t have been Scott who k.illed her . (But I read that p.olice had spoken to them and they were mistaken as it wasn’t Laci) .
Also she mentioned Laci’s dog and the boat . She thinks it’s a serial k.iller who k.illed Laci . She said there was some more evidence proving his innocence. She was very polite very nice and quite sad . I felt really sorry for her . For us all it’s just another true crime case but for her she’s living it
I believe Scott’s guilty , judging by the evidence .
A lot like Susan Powell too.

That chapter has one on the Hacking case too.
Poor Lori. She could have done so much more with her life. My sympathy to her family, including her bio-parents. Imagine giving up a little baby, thinking she would have a better life and maybe hoping for some contact one day. And then finding out what happened.
Based on how they met, there's a good chance she would have been in abusive relationships no matter what.
Falling for a guy who grabs a log in a fire with his bare hands ...
She wanted to find a broken person to fix. And that never works.
It just results in codependency, always, and abuse, often.
Maybe she could have recognized the pattern and broken the cycle if she had survived.
Maybe at least other people who seek out similar relationships will stop and rethink. Maybe change their ways.
I absolutely love the way you tell a story.
It’s the pronunciations and the occasional fuk u that I luv😉😉

The issue of documenting Lori's pregnancy was critical because if it could be proved conclusively, Mark would have faced the death penalty.

What is it with these pathological liars?! Defending their fake truth no matter the cost, a human life here and there, a dead wife or dismembered parent - as long as the lies aren’t discovered... 🤯
The real mind blowing shit is the7r lies end up being discovered ANYWAY. These liars seriously lack some critical thinking skills. Even if they were to hypothetically "get away with murder" there would still be an investigation. The closer you are to someone killed the more you will be the first one to be investigated to be ruled out. No matter how smart you are, there are cameras, digital footprints, etc. Everywhere you go. There is hiding nothing from the police. It's just blows my mind the kill to protect a secret that ends up being told anyway. 🤦♀️
This is why I always say that if you find out you are dating a pathological liar, get out of the relationship right away. You become the enemy once you catch on, and it is best to assume that they will harm you.
Yeah I try not to call out liars because of these videos. I just pretend to believe them and slowly distance myself.
It's like a house of cards. If they can get through a decade of living a lie, they're in so deep, they're in for the long haul. It would be so devastating to their pride, confidence, ego, that even considering it is painful. That's why they point out everyone ELSE'S flaws, so you don't notice theirs, and possibly criticize.
- it’s narcissism -they sincerely think they will get away with it - narcissists scare me 😳
It’s stunning how evil some people can be! To murder a person you proclaimed to love! Vicious
Seems to me keeping up with the lies and hiding things is so much more stressful than just doing the damn right thing!

I'm Indigenous American, and I had the regrettable experience of making friends with a Mormon classmate in middle school. One day, she introduced me to her church friends and, without so much as telling me their names, one of the girls full on spit in my face and called me a slur. Obviously, I stormed off before I did something that would get me expelled. My friend called me that night, crying, and explained that this all happened because she had had to "confess the sin" of befriending an Indigenous American person to her congregation... because the Book of Mormon literally teaches that we are the descendants of actual, literal demons (which is "why our skin is red"). Imagine having to unpack all that as a 13 y/o.
Laurie looks to me to be some descent of Indigenous American, herself. I can only imagine how hard that was for her.
Mormans are cult members and Brigham Young was a shyster. Their history is loaded with violence, discrimination and killings all to achieve what they wanted. Fuck the mormons and their talking salamander!
Wow! I’m so sorry that’s horrible
The problem is not indigenous Native Americans, it is naive ignorant people who believe the poison of a man made religion. The whole thing is like Snake Oil , presented as a cure for spiritual ailments, but it is just empty promises and hollow words. Believe in yourself.
lol ok.
Shame on you.
Its a Cult- yes it is. I love your droll sense of humour and honesty.
Certainly is
That is true. However, having been raised in the church, I've never heard of such a thing as 'unmarried women being denied heaven' the doctrine; I was suprised to hear him say that. Now, the church DOES believe if your family and marrige isnt sealed in the temple, you will be seperated forever in the afterlife (? why would we be denied contact with our families in heaven?); But unmarried women can go to heaven with no issue.
I'm shocked I haven't seen more people freaking out about him having said that. I guess it's not scientology, though, so they don't have scouts in the comments section looking for the slightest insult
*waits*
Amazes me how many people will be do some really stupid stuff and pretend it's in the name of God.
How do you know they’re not telling the truth?
@@BAgodmode Love is free. The Bible is a guide to happiness, not a weapon of pain. We don't need a middle man to talk with God. Jesus loves the children and so called religions destroy them.
Ikr. God is not the Elohim of Israel's name. There are many gods, so people are telling the truth when they do stupid stuff and say it's in the name of god
@@pinecrone8991 where did you get that the bible is a guide of happiness? What bible are you reading?
I absolutely love your video's. Everything you post is just so accurate, captivating and very well put together (with the necessary morbid, slightly sarcastic) comments . Keep up the good work, looking forward to a new episode all the time. Greetz from The Netherlands!!
People are terrible at murder. The slow, methodical planning portion just always seems to escape them.
What a beautiful woman she was. RIP 🙏 🕊 Lori ❤
Such a waste of a beautiful intelligent woman whose only fault was meeting him. Rip Lori.
Thank you so much for more great content! I was just researching the other day for info on Mark Hacking so I’m thrilled to watch your video. Thanks again!
I’ve had a long day being sick but as soon as you dropped the F bomb about this narcissist, I laughed so hard.
I would run from any man stupid enough to put his hand in a fire & grab a log!! He wins the Darwin award for sure!!

Mark's dad was my nieces' pediatrician. So glad someone covered this tragic case!
Religion and murder are so intertwined
Basically since it's inception
The user manual is full of murder. And holy genocide, of course. What a deity...
An argument could be made that atheism has killed more than religion.
Religion aka purity culture creates so many pathological narcissists. The children are never emotionally validated, just told how to act and wear a mask. 100% effective at creating a false self.
@@TsmithJustin And that's a blatently false argument. Atheism is the rejection of a believe in god(s). Anything else is on you. You still can be a psychopath, sociopath, sadist or masochist. Nobody ever killed because they believed that there are no god(s). Theists kill BECAUSE they think they do god(s) work. Stalin, Hitler and other dictators killed to stay in power or 'doing god's work'. Religion makes you fly planes into buildings, atheism has no membership requirements.
His life of short term lies for immediate gratification
seems like 100000X more work and stress than just being honest and working to improve himself and his relationships.
I have a cousin who is a pathological liar. People got fed up with it and have zero interest in interacting with him because we can’t tell if he’s full of shit every time he speaks. It’s exhausting sorting through the true and false.
Dude, you know I can be critical of your story presentations. I married a Mormon...if I had watched this 7 years ago I'd proudly stick up for the LDS community. Just found out there was a lot of incest going on in his family, including children. It's one of those things that you just can't see it while you're in it. Great job on this one, friend! There is a difference between FLDS & LDS, but I'm starting to think not as many as I believed.
I was born and raised in the LDS church, I am now and ex member and I agree. It's crazy how you can be blind to something when you're in it, until you're out and you realize how crazy it actually was.
RIP to this beautiful woman. She deserved better.

You are my favorite true crime channel hands down!!!
The irony is that had Mark simply been honest with Lori and everyone else including himself them she would still be alive and none of this would have ever even happened.
Meanwhile I learned a new phrase today: *"SUPER CULTY"*
I know how hard it is to find information on this case, and that makes your presentation even more impressive.
When true crime documentary opens with the three words "Salt Lake City", you know it's gonna be a good watch.
He really needs cover Emmanuel David and his family, that has to be one of the weirdest cases from SLC.
@@Glorindellen Almost anything that comes out of Salt Lake is worth time to look into, for a variety of reasons.
Ever heard of Stephen Gru?
Has he done Mark Hoffman yet?

I am so glad SOMEONE has finally covered this story. It was insane to watch unfold here. I can’t believe no one has covered it before.
It has been covered by True Crime Brewery. Also believe That Chapter covered it.
One thing that wasn't pointed out was the fact that Mark sustained a traumatic brain injury while working a summer construction job when he was in high school or right after. It made it so that he had a hard time being able to do coursework in college. His father was a doctor and his brothers were all in the medical or legal profession, too. Mark felt the need to keep up appearances, so it started innocently enough, thinking he could get school back on track, but he ended up dropping out. But he kept pretending to be a student, having Lori and family members proof read papers he downloaded off the internet for his "homework". It came to the point where he was supposed to be going to medical school, to keep up the family tradition and he chose somewhere far from home. I don't know how he thought he could fake graduating from medical school, I doubt he considered that far in advance - he had 3-4 years before that would happen.
That doesn't explain the lying and manipulation at a younger age.
Maybe his parents didn't realize the severity of his learning disability, but he could have had help studying.
Omg your sarcastic narratives are on point you nail it every time
Another great job on making a solid video, keep it up!
I went out to search for Lori each day for Lori, sometimes on more than one search a day. I met Mark's family, who were wonderful people and also Lori's father, who was a pillar of strength, I ran into him on missing persons searches later that year. My first search out at the canyon I fell in step with one of the search dog handlers and learned that Lori had never been at the park that day - she never set foot out of the car. On my way out, a reporter stopped me and interviewed me and ended by asking if I would be back the next day. I hesitated, not wanting to disclose Lori hadn't set foot there at the park because it might reduce the number of searchers in future days so I replied I'd see how my feet felt in the morning. I concluded that everywhere searchers searched was one place Lori wasn't. Then bits of information implicating Mark started coming out. I knew she had to be dead and that the families were both coming to grips with this new reality and that if gave them comfort to see the thousands of people who searched daily and if nothing else, I could help in that respect. The searchers were well meaning, but some took to bringing back potential evidence to the search center, an absolute no-no. At least my groups had me to educate them on the rules of evidence, chain of custody, and so forth, and they began to defer to me to rule on whether something was of possible evidentiary value or not, we had one of the only tips which required further investigation by search dogs. Then the search came to an abrupt halt and the core searchers felt bereft, wanting to help, but having no way to do so any longer.
Im sure it meant a lot to them that so many people come out to help. It's tough being in a situation, especially like this, where you want to help, but there's not anything you can really do. Sometimes all you can do is lend an ear and offer support just to let them know you care and are available.
Sure.
Theres always at least one person who claims to have been a part of the search party on every video of missing people.
She went "missing" in July and her husband was arrested roughly two weeks later at the beginning of August.... how did you run into him on missing searches later in the year? Also, I've been on searches and it's well emphasized to never touch potential evidence, only to place markers and call for law enforcement. Actually, it was don't touch anything that didn't obviously belong in that environment but err on the side of caution and just don't touch anything if possible. It's amazing that you seemed to be the only person who knew that and saved the day!

That’s so ironic. This channel is pretty PC. Your anti-PC beliefs are also held by the murderers.
@@JehanineMelmoth I mean it’s no defense to the killer but “all women out there deserve better than that” was just cringe and a little overkill even tho it’s a true statement his history says it’s typically liberal virtue signaling

@@masondykstra9464 It’s hardly virtue-signalling to say that women deserve better than murder. Or is it, to you? Is not murdering women some extreme left wing thing to you?!
@@JehanineMelmoth that's not what the host was talking about. He was saying "women deserve better" in reference to the Mormon church at the end of his anti Mormon rant. Monsters has some kind of weird obsession with Mormons and yeah, it was pretty cringe considering it was a bit... Made up.
I've seen many of these stories on other channels and TV shows, but none come close to the details, the back story or the history of the victims and the perpetrators. Well done once again!
I absolutely LOVE your sarcasm! Makes me giggle lol
I also love how you have your helpful messages at the end of every video. Thank you
As someone who lives in Salt Lake City I think I should clarify something.
I'm not Mormon. There are Mormons who believe the woman is 2nd class, but this idea is largely dated. Just like it was in the 1920's. There are still hardcore families out there that teach this idea, and there are branches of Mormons that aren't mainstream (such as flds) that also teach this, as well as polygamy.
That being said, by and large mainstream Mormonism is not this way. They teach more modern principles of fairness and equality. The wife is honored and respected. Husband's can be the stay at home Dad, it's okay. But women cannot hold the 'priesthood' which is a holy power granted to individuals for healing and whatever. So it isn't pure equality, at least not yet. Great video as always.
Dunno how related this is to the video, but I was just reminded of it: the first Sherlock Holmes novel, a study in scarlet, the case is solved in the first half of the book, and the second half was about Mormons traveling to Utah (it was a justification for the murderer to do what they did). Anyways, just cool having the historical connection to each case, you rock.
I remember this sad case. Lori was way to good for him. These murderers ALWAYS think they can get away with their crimes. I wonder if Chandler Halderson looked this guy up and thought. I want to be just like him. Go through life and lie my way through it.
I am so glad I found this channel!
I grew up in Utah and have never heard this story before. Thanks for the great content!!
Imagine if his parents had taught him to be a good person instead of a god person. So infuriating.
