Amy Bishop's son Seth (age 20) was shot and killed last year by one of his friends. It's both ironic and tragic that the cycle of trauma and violence continues to plague this family
I will give her this - not many people have the distinction of having a Ph.D. from Harvard *and* starting a fight at IHOP. On serious note, R.I.P. to all who have died: Seth Bishop; Gopi Podila; Maria Ragland Davis; Adriel D. Johnson, Sr.; and Seth Anderson.
A friend of mine was a biology student of Bishop’s at UAH in the year before the mass shooting. He said that, among the other students, people knew exactly who you were talking about merely by saying “the crazy lady.” That’s what she was called by her students in the years leading up to the massacre.

First, this last had red flags flying everywhere!!!! Secondly, when I googled her name, I find articles about people being angry that Amy's daughter continued her education at the University. She is not her mother. She didn't hurt anyone. She is just as much a victim of her mother & father.
So her mother, who aided in concealing her first murder and was never charged with any crime, helped convince her to take the plea deal. What an awesome mom.
I definitely think her mother must have the same mental illness as her daughter. The only comfort I take from this is: Amy will NEVER get to say goodbye to her mother on her deathbed nor will she have ANYONE to mourn for her. She'll die alone and forgotten, exactly what they deserve.
Well, she raised Amy. She fostered the kind of atmosphere where someone like Amy could become textbook walking dysfunction. I believe she had severe psychotic and histrionic-narcissistic features to her mental state...and I've found that often times, that comes with being the elder child of a doted-on younger sibling. Instead of coping properly with the reduction in attention that they have once the cute, younger sibling comes along, they become intensely resentful and angry...though still very invested in themselves and self-preservation, so they keep it under the lid until it just pops off ('flips their lid') and expresses itself in craziness directed at everybody within striking range (usually not the subject of their ire unless their self-control has truly snapped, like with Bishop and her brother).
Hard to judge someone in that position, tbh. Imagine losing 1 kid and then finds out the person that killed him was your other, less-talented kid. That lie was probably the only thing that kept her sane.
Theory: the reason Amy seemed so determined to kill her friend was because she is a narcissist and could not bear her friend surviving after she had seen behind the „mask“
I think she has deep trust issues and wouldn't qualify anyone as "friend". Her low self-esteem (compared to her brother) could lead to those trust issues.
I have two strange connections to this case being a resident of Huntsville. A very close friend and work associate at the time was part of the Biology department studying for his undergrad at the time. The first professor that was killed was a close mentor of my friend. Luckily he wasn’t present the day of the events but still suffered . On the other side of this after she was arrested she was housed in the county jail along with the relative of mine female of course. Who proceeded to give her a valuable lesson in manners when she chose to cut the line in front of her in the cafeteria. The beating with the food tray was severe and made local news.
I have to wonder how Amys mother felt on hearing of her daughters mass killings and attempted murder spree? Perphaps on the day Seth died, her guilt at either favouring or ignoring Amys obvious signs of jealously took ahold of her. For whatever reasons she lied, she did a cruel disservice to her lovely, bright son and to all the people and their loved ones that came across Amy. I may not always see the purpose of retelling tragedies, but many lessons from this case could be learnt. Remarkable research amd presentation. Thanks
The kids were probably pitted against each other. Definitely a guilty conscience, and now she also has the deaths of 6 more people on her conscience as well.
It is definitely a lesson in parenting. Playing favorites or pitting kids against each other does nothing but create negative sibling relationships. Honesty, there’s a hundred other instruments, they could have asked him to try any of them first. Just being a different string instrument could have been enough a degree of separation to give her some relief as a kid. It doesn’t excuse her actions, but it should serve as a warning of what this type of parenting leads to.
This woman is the poster child for crazy. Crazy eyes, crazy haircut, crazy past, crazy ambitions, crazy daily behavior, she was an absolute time bomb waiting to happen. Gives me Charlie Brandt vibes. Legit scares me.

I have a younger sister who was a jealous, overcompetitive, obsessives nut, and I think my parents were afraid of her. Her sadistic antics made it impossible for me to be around my family when she was present. It all ended when she told me she could use her law school's database to dig up private info about me. I anonymously contacted the school to see if it was true (it wasn't, she had no such access) and then showed her the correspondence. If I'd given them her name, they would've kicked her out of the school. That finally scared her straight. She hasn't said anything outrageous in the years since, but I no longer had any feelings for her.
I’d be careful about confronting a sadistic narc. I hope she was scared straight… but if you embarrassed her she may be looking to get back at you twice as bad. Just be careful. And I’m not surprised your parents were afraid, there’s too many stories out there of sadistic teenagers that think they know best just straight up shooting their parents. It’s awful.
I went to high school with this woman and she was on the periphery of the group I was friends with. I didn’t really know her all that well. Really great job covering this truly horrific story.
I don't understand Amy's mother, I get not wanting to lose two children, but when one is shot and killed by the other- you should let the police investigate to make sure it wasn't pre-planned, especially when there is tension between siblings.
That's the thing, I'm convinced she knew it wasn't an accident. She also knew the police chief which is why it was so easy to get the murder swept under the rug. She felt guilty about how she treated Amy so she covered for her.
I grew up in Springfield Massachusetts in the 1950's & 1960's, and I understand Amy's mother quite well. When I moved to CA in 1969, I realized how much Social Judgment there was back in New England, and how many people were careful about maintaining Social Appearances to avoid bad Social Judgments. Being the wife a Boston area college professor made Mom even more sensitive about "proper" Social Appearances. In such a pretentious social environment, I'm not surprised that Amy turned out the way that she did, nor that her mother covered up the murder of her own son. In fact, it was this uptight social attitude back there that made me escape to CA.
I wonder about a few things: 1. Did her parents really favor her brother, or was it all in her head? 2. A lot of time passed between killing her brother and killing her colleagues. Maybe her life was like a bubble, and sooner or later it would burst. She'd spent years behaving inappropriately and intimidating everyone into caving in. When the people finally said no, she hit the point of no return. 3. Did she marry that guy because he was submissive?
era um bobalhão..basta olhar pra cara dele..essa mulher é uma psicopata, matou o irmão, mandou uma bomba pra casa do cara..e esses pais inúteis nunca levaram essa peste a um médico?
Amy hated her brother because he took away the attention SHE received. He was more successful, better, whatever. She thought she was IT. That is why she killed her own brother. She then became the focus of her rich parents. Once her students exposed her and her peers ignored her , she showed her true self
Having weddings and funerals at the same church isn’t weird. My grandma grew up in backwoods in the south, there was only one church. Ppl got married, baptized, buried, and they taught kids day school there. She practically lived in there before she moved up to Michigan. There’s a lot of places like that.
I think he means that such a tragic incident that happens to her brother by her own hands and then, has no problem getting married in the same church where his funeral was held. Saying that she is a remorseless POS. It's much more than just having weddings and funerals in the same church
I doubt in this instance that other options for wedding venues would have been a hardship, especially if it is the same church where the funeral was held for your brother you murdered. She wasn't in some backwoods community where it would have been difficult to use another church. She was such a heartless POS she couldn't even feign distaste or discomfort getting married in the same church where her brother's funeral took place.
maybe it's strange in usa but in some other places it would be strange to not use 'your' church for everything, yeah. even if there were some others available, the church after all would be the constant, from dirt to dirt - and possibly had been there for few hundred years. if you just use the church as a rented venue equivalent to renting a hotel ballroom it's a bit different of course I suppose, but not treating it like that isn't that uncommon even among folk who aren't huge christians and only use the church for baptizing, weddings, funerals, confirmations and such. in smaller places it's not that uncommon to have the funeral reception in the same venue as wedding reception either though simply because it's not like smaller places have an abundance of suitable venues for rent for cheap - might even use the same catering.
I’m not sure if I missed it but I would also like to add to this story that Amy did eventually have a son and she named him Seth, after the brother she murdered. Sadly her son, Seth, was murdered last year as well by a gunshot wound. The irony of their life stores is odd to say the least. On a lighter note, I love all of your content and though I don’t comment as much I’m here twice a week every week lol. Thanks for all of your hard work!

Her brother psychologically abused her with the blessing of mom and dad. It was only a matter of time before she lashed out at him. After killing her brother, mom and dad never got her psychological help. Everything she did was inevitable. She was programmed since childhood to be a basket case and her brother was of no help either. Deliberately taking up the very same instrument as his sister so he could one up her and mock her because he was better at it. Of all the instruments he could have played….he chooses the one his sister plays because he turned their relationship into a competition and mom and dad allowed this. I would have bought him a piano but the parents thought it would be so cute and entertaining to pit them against each other. Now, one of them is dead and the other one is doing life in prison. Yup, those were some great parents there. You should read up and learn about early childhood development before you bring a life into this world.
Oh how I love it when you post these episodes overnight. It helps the night owl in me find something extremely interesting to pass the time. Keep posting at this hour.

Why? The term doctor just a disgusting slur especially when used against people with a PhD. I see nothing wrong with calling her doctor as she is the epitome of what the slur is targets I hate it when people are ignorant about this issue. 5+ years of indentured servitude where you can’t even take a day off to a parent’s ones funeral and you NEVER want to be reminded of that system through a disgusting prefix.

I agree but devils advocate I think trauma will make you do crazy things. Maybe in their head they felt like turning in Amy would be to accept her guilt and then in turn lose another child. I don’t agree with what they did at all but given how manipulative Amy is, I can imagine between that and the grief those parents were arguably in a emotionally vulnerable time. It’s just such a shame that Seth was left without an advocate or someone to support him

My older sister was insanely jealous of me, and definitely would have liked nothing more than to see that I had died. She hated me and constantly tried to get everybody else to hate me as well, She told lies about me ; made up preposterous stories and many people would ask me why is it that they could never have a normal conversation since she only wanted to talk about me. Very good research. While I had not transferred to UAH at the time of the shooting I was working in the Huntsville Hospital ER as security when the teachers were brought in. That security team works very closely with HPD and because of that we were briefed within about 3 hrs of the shooting about her killing her brother and that her husband was believed to be a potential accomplice. A very sad part is that Prof. Leahy was actually working to help her try to get tenure and she shot him anyway. Prof. Leahy later recovered from his injuries and returned to UAH to teach. He passed away in Oct 2017.

I was so happy to hear that Dr. Deborah M. didn't get killed. This is my first time ever even hearing about this and it sounds so unbelievable...almost like a movie. I can't believe how evil and selfish that woman is! She murdered her own brother and had her wedding at the same church his funeral was held! I believe she probably would've killed her family if they did the wrong thing. A lot of ppl seem to think that if a person is book smart that they're exempt from being illogical and emotionally unstable. I think her husband did know what she was about to do.
I kind of wonder if we can know the deep pain that people we ‘think we know’ but are entirely ignorant of who they truly are. It’s not that difficult to fool most people, who are content to know very little. We may describe them as being ‘standoffish’ when it’s genuinely dark and disturbed but being somewhat NORMAL, we cannot take in, the truly disturbed among us.

I watched another documentary video about Amy Bishop by TH-camr Danielle Kirsty. According to the source material that Dani read in her video about the case, it was said that Amy would get ticked off about anything and everything. For instance one time (before they moved to Alabama), Amy had actually banned an ice cream van from passing through the neighbourhood where she and her family resided. Simply because her children were (apparently) lactose intolerant. So she complained to the police over the fact that other kids living in the neighbourhood were getting ice cream, when her kids couldn't have ice cream.

I just freaked out, seeing this in my notifications. I was in middle school and my family had just moved to Huntsville when this happened. Thank you for talking about this case.
Getting married in the same church where your brother's funeral was held isn't weird at all, if it's where your family goes. That's what a church is for. It's not a venue, it's a congregation where the members observe all the milestones of life, from birth to death, together. The tragedy is that for Amy Bishop, the deeper meaning of church as a community of faith never got through.
The university tolerance mantra is a fail in so many ways. She was constantly on the radar, the students didn’t like her, nor colleagues and everyone thought her insanely strange. Everyone just brushed concerns aside.
This was the 1st case I watched in Deadly Women. I never thought someone so accomplished could be so unhinged. She should've been arrested for her brother's murder so none of this would've happened.

She really reminds me of many of my teachers growing up. Idk why there are so many angry, irritable women in education. I have a lot of respect for teachers in general, and many of my female teachers were great. Others really remind me of this lady. Living life so seriously that you can't even connect with coworkers or anyone cause you have to be better than them, but you're not actually better than them so you become dangerously envious and live your all sour and gray. I'm a miserable dude, single, lost a lot in my life, and experienced a lot of failure and pain. I'm not going to live like some sinister ghost painting, painted in the blood of Satan's finest angels just cause life sucks. Life can suck all the way, without you having some demented inner monologue.
I had an English Teacher who was the worst. She graded me in the worst way. No doubt she hated me. In the end I was wise enough to drop her class which the only time I've done so.
I'll say this again, I don't have children and never will but I am sure there are things my mother would never let slide even if she thought she would loose me. That one can overlook their own child killing another is a level of forgiveness I have not achieved and probably will not. I've never been this loyal.
I’m not so sure it’s loyalty. I’ve known enough parents who never separate themselves from their kids, so they remain deeply enmeshed. Most of the time, it’s in-law problems, but when it gets sick, you get this kind of mess.
I heard this story before about the Alabama shootings. I didn't know the back story of why she killed her brother and how she got away with it! She was a real piece of work managing to get away with her prior crimes. Absolutely shocking! Perhaps because she was DR. Amy Bishop living in a nice home with 4 children. Thanks for explaining the entire story.

Correction: professors go to universities to do research, with teaching being the side show. Not the other way as you suggested. Well covered otherwise
Welllll, in reality it is usually the other way round, unless you were lucky with your contract. Professors usually outsource the actual work that goes into the research papers they slap their names on. Remember all those underpaid postdoc researchers?
In academia, being denied tenure when you are eligible is essentially being fired. You are invited to stay with the department for about a year after so you can appeal (these are usually denied), wrap up your projects, and go! Most people denied tenure also use this time to find a new job.

I know this woman's crimes are no laughing matter, but so much of her life story had me chuckling. She's BATSHIT crazy.
Massachusetts resident checkin' in and when this happened my ex and I were laughing our asses off about the IHOP incident....
I first heard of her on deadly women and I was weak watching her segment 😂. She's so extra. This telling was way less funny but still good.
But also her friend still had her job there, and she just couldnt deserve it more than queen amy right
I have two strange connections to this case being a resident of Huntsville.

I wonder about a few things:

Amy hated her brother because he took away the attention SHE received. He was more successful, better, whatever. She thought she was IT. That is why she killed her own brother. She then became the focus of her rich parents. Once her students exposed her and her peers ignored her , she showed her true self

Having weddings and funerals at the same church isn’t weird. My grandma grew up in backwoods in the south, there was only one church. Ppl got married, baptized, buried, and they taught kids day school there. She practically lived in there before she moved up to Michigan. There’s a lot of places like that.
Married and buried. Your church is where you go. Small town here...we even have the blessing of the animals .
I think he means that such a tragic incident that happens to her brother by her own hands and then, has no problem getting married in the same church where his funeral was held. Saying that she is a remorseless POS. It's much more than just having weddings and funerals in the same church
Also most of the time the reason why they pick that church is that they know the preacher.

Simply because her children were (apparently) lactose intolerant. So she complained to the police over the fact that other kids living in the neighbourhood were getting ice cream, when her kids couldn't have ice cream.

I’m not so sure it’s loyalty. I’ve known enough parents who never separate themselves from their kids, so they remain deeply enmeshed. Most of the time, it’s in-law problems, but when it gets sick, you get this kind of mess.

How her parents and police let her get away with murdering her brother. Shocking
Absolutely! Great research on a well covered mass murder
Bazy Critch! I like how this presenter talks about these cases. Just the right amount of sarcasm but otherwise very serious.
Some of these nerd/social outcast types get angry that they receive no attention and popularity from others, but routinely show this type of short-fuse and narcissistic temperament while they're on the lower tier of the social scale as is. Kind of ironic and makes you think about how they'd act if they did receive some type of popularity. That always stands out to me in these shooter/domestic threat types.
Her son also name Seth was shot and killed in 2021 at 18 by a friend in an accident. How crazy is that?!?
Couldn't help notice in the pic of Amy with her 3 little daughter's that the eldest (twins) hair was cut just like Mom's. Says a lot really.
I was hoping youd cover this one! Glad i was planning on staying up to finish this paper work, this will make the night fly by!
The Adam Lanza/Dylann Roof haircut should have been a red flag.
I love this Channel ❤️
Right?!
Fully 😀
Me too
Same here!
Same I don't think there is a single vid I haven't watched of his 🤣
I’m so glad you covered this piece of work. Smh
I was waiting patiently for this......thanks Jiles 🙏🏽🙌🏽❤
She wasn't fired. She was denied tenure which was pretty much what set her off. There's a great New Yorker article about this case you should've read.
In academia, being denied tenure when you are eligible is essentially being fired. You are invited to stay with the department for about a year after so you can appeal (these are usually denied), wrap up your projects, and go! Most people denied tenure also use this time to find a new job.
I live close to Huntsville and was planning to attend UAH to study biology, until this happened. I watched this play out on the news. My dad wouldn't let me attend UAH afterwards. Sadly this could've been prevented.
I'm only 5 seconds in, but I've already clicked 👍. I only do this on channels where the videos are consistently great.
