      The Ford "Advanced Track System" is no better. My 2015 F250 says "Service Advance Track" intermediantly when ever it feels like it. No patterns or certain situations set it off. I let the Ford dealership have the truck for 10 days to try and figure it out. They replaced the computers and checked the entire electrical system. All the sensors. All the related sub systems (like ABS). Nothing. All under the 3yr factory warrenty. Nobody can figure it out. They said this is particularly common among the SUVs like the Explorer. So i just gave up on it. Learned to ignore it. Lol.

    It is all true what you are saying, however you did not mention one thing: what Traction Control actually does and what is it for.
    So I will do it - TC helps to keep the car on the road! And it prevents you from losing control!!! So eventually it will save your car from total destruction (and it will be much more than 800$) or even your (and your family) lives

    • @buckaroobonsi555
      @buckaroobonsi555 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DO it does not. Modern traction control I think is mandated now just like airbags but it used to be optional. A mechanical traction control would be great like posi-traction, torsen limited slip, Detroit Locker etc....THe problem is that htose cost more money. Even more modern systems using viscous coupling and magnetic clutches are great. That is not what is being used though. All they are doing in most low-end systems is retarding the throttle and applying the brake to whichever wheel is spinning. THey are hopping this will help but often in the hands of a skilled driver it actual hurts and the driver is fighting the car more than the weather conditions. Mom's Saturn(GM) traction control kept getting us stuck in Michigans snow. As soon as we figured out how to turn it off we where fine. Turn it on and you where stuck again. Sometimes you need momentum to keep from getting stuck in snow and mud but these systems that are fairly dumb can not deal with that. A wheel trained human is always better than cheap imperfect code and lame attempts at cheap fake traction control.Just like a skilled well trained driver and I do not mean a race care driver or professional driver can easily stop shorter than ABS even under less than ideal conditions with threshold breaking. Humans have judgment that can account for variety but computer's just follow one size fits all programing.

  • @sekopiski
    @sekopiski 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Scotty please. That same Teves MK60 traction control system is used by loads of car manufacturers. GM, BMW, Ford, Audi, Mazda, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat, Volvo, Toyota...
    And you do not have to replace the whole assembly, just the hydraulic unit which costs under $400 on ebay.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +sekopiski I go by dealer list prices when they are the only ones in town who sell the parts. And I rather doubt this is the same system used in toyotas, cause I NEVER have seen a toyota system break down yet, and I work on tons of toyotas.

      I love all the negative comments to your reply. These idiots don't understand you don't always drive a car until it dies. You get bored, or you upgrade. When I sold my Buick roadmaster it had 307,000km on it... The new owner said it needed nothing for the safety / e-test. It's a great car I just decided to get a newer vehicle. I'm on my 9th GM vehicle, I've always taken care of them and never sold any of them broken. If you're smart and buy a vehicle in good shape and take care of it you won't have problems. When idiots don't take care of their vehicle and it breaks down, they blame the vehicle... Even though it was from their neglect, hence calling them idiots.

      ..traction control is a crock of sh@t...just another move toward self-driving and further eroding driving skills of the average driver....they need to teach people to really drive to get their license...manual transmission, defensive driving, techniques for driving in rain/snow, spin/skid recovery, etc., etc....NOT just sticking it in "Drive" and letting electronics take over the driving process....

    I own a 2007 Chevy Silverado Z71. Comes with traction control. It has 166,000 miles +. I have kept up with it and haven't had any issues with it. Just changed the struts and shocks, change the brake fluid when it's start to look to dirty, but alternator is working great. Change the belts and hose just maintenance. But speaker system isn't working properly, but the stereo is. 4x4 and transmission work great. I keep up with it. I use Amsoil products on my truck since I bought it new.

Only kept it less than a year. Got an older Grand Cherokee, with V8, and though a gas hog, it's much better off road and everywhere else than the Wrangler. You go aftermarket if you plan on selling it or trading it in, not for longevity. The oem rack will last 15, 20 years.. You really think something made in China is going to last as long? I know its not a fair comparison, but I don't see any '78 Toyotas around, not to mention '69. They're all rusted out, and generally not worth preserving, though a perverse side of me would love to see a '78 Celica again---even a boring Corona for grins (Camry granddad). I still see plenty of old Chevys around (Corvettes, Camaros, Caprices). Certain Chevys still engender more passion than most Toyos. Perhaps, this is changing though, particularly with recent Toyo trucks and the rare but beloved Supra and first gen SCs. Albert Vidal, I love cookies, what kind?

    FYI This isn't a GM specific issue. Volkswagen/Audi use an extremely similar system for traction control, and I'd bet many other manufacturers do as well. When this ABS module fails on an '05 Passat 4motion for example, the repair costs can be upwards of $2,000 through the dealer. However there are people that can rebuild these for a fraction of the price, and WILL NOT need reprogrammed.
    And furthermore, traction control is just a nice option on GM vehicles, but if you buy an Audi Quattro, that's one of the main reasons you buy the car. When it fails, you're basically left with a clunky old timey 4x4 system.

  • @danp129

    I found the brake modulator for less than $500 for the vehicle in the video. On the other hand, the same component for a 2008 Mustang (part# 7R3Z2C215C) was over $700. Don't buy a Ford... And Scotty, you did not diagnose the issue to determine which part was faulty, you just jumped at the opportunity to throw the most expensive part at the problem without verifying it was indeed bad. The auto parts stores love you man.

    Scotty,
    I have found great savings by purchasing GENUINE GM parts from Dealers on line that will discount up t0 50%!!! These are NOT after market parts, bur since they are selling parts out of their market area you can get original OEM for way less, and no tax! I know that won't help you if you need parts the same day, however if you can schedule a repair job that requires only OEM parts, this is a very viable way to do it. I have saved BIG BUCKS on brake parts, shocks, interior parts, W/W motors, mirrors, etc.
    PS: This is NOT an exclusive thing for GM. I have helped friends do the same thing for Toyota and Lincoln as well.

      If you mean companies like GM Parts Direct and other dealerships let me share with you what they are doing. GM parts ship from GENERAL MOTORS Service Parts North American Operations warehouse system. When you order parts as a Dealership the price of shipping is including in the price of the parts General Motors sells them there is no additional tax and shipping charge. The dealership does not have to ship the part to themselves they can put an alternative shipping address on the order. Because they can not increase the price to you over their cost with this system and still get the shipping free they sell to you at their cost for the part but add fictitious shipping charges to make up the difference. They have a 3 tier price guide. You have the Dealers cost than you have the Matric Price/Jobber price which s usually about 30% higher thant heir cost then you have full recommended retail which is 2X the dealers cost. Since only parts guys at the dealership and people working for General Motor Serice Parts know this people have no clue.

    Driving a 2011 impala, 3.5 😂with ABS brakes and traction control. In Canada, Northern Ontario. I’ve redone brakes, power steering hoses,(did complete flush). It’s hitting 175000 km. ABS saved me a few times, on light snow covered black ice. As for the TC, I use it in adverse road condition, 6 plus inches of snow, slush, gravel roads., etc. never had an issue with either features. Replaced front wheel bearings and hubs, no axle leak. All in all, it’s been a good car for me. But, never will I go to a GM Dealer again.

    Hey Scotty, I have a 2004 Chevrolet SSR, then had 100,000 miles. 10 years ago. The ABS & Traction control I first had trouble codes for everything. Engine, Exhaust failure, Brakes, Transmission etc. I asked on the SSR fanatics & took to Chevrolet Dealer. No help from either because? Not one mechanic had seen or worked on the SSR in Toledo Area. Most SSRs from 2004 to 2006 around 24,178 were built. Nobody had a problem because you have to drive a car for parts to wear out. Confused why Trailblazer did not have issues? I had several helpful mechanics resolve the problem. Well I tried the sensors on wheels. Found several had failed. So I replaced all disc brake pads, Rotors & calipers that were worn need replacement. I took my SSR to a car show & found a local expert looking at my SSR. He told me how to fix ABS, Traction Control, Heater motor, Over heating of engine etc. He told me that some engineer designed the Trailblazer Chassis with the ABS Traction control right next to the Catalytic converter. The heat soak in traffic & after parked. OR? The engine in 04 is creating lots more power than catalytic converter was made for. The heat would conduction & radiation to the ABS Traction control. The failure is inside the module. The solder on circuit board melts. Wires can too. I found a replacement on ebay. Lots of work under truck using torx socket to remove the module. It was burned. I also found that the ground was bad for the ABS Traction control. So I ran another ground. That may be a fix on your repair of this problem you said was no possible? Clean the dirty engine compartment & repair or replace the ground for the unit. I enjoy your tips & repairs with your commentary very informative. Thanks

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps. At least GM is willing to make things right these days. Ford on the other hand, has a long history of covering up huge safety and design defects. They have to be investigated by the federal government before they try to make it look like they care. The recent F150 Ecoboost sudden brake failure and the regional door latch recall that should have been a nationwide recall are good examples of that. You could also point out the cruise control fire defect that affected millions of Ford owners (burned down many family homes) stretching over nearly a decade that Ford drug their feet the entire time on (recalling vehicles a decade later lol). Oh and the park-to-reverse defect that management/lawyers wrote about in internal memos that went on for over a decade and killed and injured thousands. The firewall mounted ignition module on late 80's vehicles that management were warned by engineers would fail due to heat exposure (but would cost pennies per car to fix) went ignored despite the danger of a sudden engine stall. Then there's the Ford Explorer and it's substandard suspension, the Ford Windstar suspension failures, the Ford Escape rear suspension failure, the F150 throttle position sensors that fail at low mileage (cheap plastic parts, poorly designed), ongoing cam phaser/timing chain wear and failure issues (sub-100k miles, 60-80k miles is typically failure point, hey just out of warranty and a few grand to fix!), 5.4 oil pressure loss that motivated Ford to revise the minimum oil pressure spec instead of recalling/repairing, the 5.0 coyote oil pumps that grenade even on stock engines, the 5.0 coyote rear cylinder overheat issue, the F150 fuel pump driver module mounted on the bottom of the frame where it collects salt and corrodes until failure causing a dangerous stall (why haven't they moved it to a spot where it won't corrode all these years later), the cheap IWE front end that almost seems like they intentionally designed to fail either due to vacuum issues or the plastic bits in the hub failing, the 8.8 rear carrier bearing failures at low mileage (those pinned axle tubes are a joke), the fuel evap failures that cause fuel to get sucked into the intake and potentially hydrolock the engine (cheaply designed plastic part, normal Ford quality).
