So many people have asked this Roger, and i have to say i think it’s the stupidest possible question. How much does the colour of the bike have to do with its performance? I wanted THIS bike, with THIS spec, THIS engine, THIS ergonomics package, THIS geometry, THIS power. The colour had nothing to do with any of those, but getting a different brand in the ‚right‘ colour would mean i would have a completely differently performing bike. Changing the colour is easy. Making a GS as light as a 1090, making a Tenere as powerful as a 1090, making a Tracer 9 as comfortable as a 1090 or making a Tiger 900 as exciting as a 1090 are all far more complicated and expensive.
If its heat doing that to the panels you might want to line the inside of the panel with some adhesive heat proof like what you have on belly pan fairings near the exhaust
It looks great. I have a 1986 BMW R80RT which has the original paint job which is shiny but has dings from 37 years on the road. I have considered taking the full fairing, steel tank, front fender, side panels and seat cowl off to paint it sold black or blue. But I like the hand painted double pin stripes on all of the parts and I don’t have that talent. So in the end I decided to compound and polish the old paint on the tank, and I found the original blue touch up paint from a German company. So the bike looks clean and shiny, But definitely has Patina, meaning that you can see that it shows it’s age. Just like it’s 70 year old owner. I have Patina!😎👍
Nice job Bill! I reckon you've done the right thing mate. Old things are supposed to look old (I'm getting that way!) just as ADV things are supposed to look adventured! I'll not be worrying too much about scuffs and scratches as in the end, the bike will look like the representation of the adventures it's been on!

I think all KTM‘s are being tarred with the same brush. I can’t find any real issues from owners of the 1090. That’s across 3 English and 2 German forums.
I like how you aren't just a "content creator", you are never afraid to say, nope didn't work, and look what I bought to fix it instead. Nice revised colour scheme to boot.
Don’t know if you can get it where you are, but there is a product from the US called Vynal Off. Spray on, preferably in sunlight, wait a few minutes and peek the decal and glue off together.
You should put some of that aluminium heat repelling tape/foil on the inside of that left panel. They also put that stuff underneath tanks etc. to avoid it overheating/melting!
Does look far better, and nice save with the Super Adv tank panel! A part of me wants to put a sticker kit on my bike just to counter the reduced 'ostentatious KTM-ness' on yours haha! Fair play for the effort too, I despise vinyl wrap!
Looks good in the black and silver rather than that garish orange, that orange was a bit much. The different shades of silver actually look quite nice together, sort of off sets the colours and different panels. I'd leave it how it is
It's more about the machine than the dress it's wearing! And as you can see, changing the panels is almost as easy as changing the cover on your Nokia 3210 in the good old days!!
I felt your struggle! I think my vinyl wrapping days are behind me, came out stong in the end! Definitely give Motoproworks a shout, I think they also do subtle👍😜

I was expecting exactly the color I got. Orange. Because that’s what color KTMs come in. But i wanted a KTM 1090 Adv that wasn’t orange. It’s not rocket science.

I appreciate this is an old blog and this bike is now deceased however still entertaining to watch. To be honest I’ve considered KTM on a few occasions but just can’t get away with the Colours. As I’m late 50s I don’t want to look like a power ranger anymore. I’m sure they’d sell more bikes if more subtle colours were available. 👍

@@AndyManCam I don't think you could've done any better in that situation. Too flexible to use filler and you would always know it was there. Made the right choice to replace them. She looks better in those colours anyway!
Absolutely. It was obvious that the panel was a lost cause. Glad i Cut my losses and changed approach rather than putting time and money into that pit!!
ABS plastics are always a bit weird.. easily fade in the sun, keep their flexibility at the cost of temperature stability. End result is very good though. While I have always liked the industrial design of KTMs, some of the colour decisions are a bit low-end “IKEA”/road cone. Have you ever considered doing a photoshop mock-up before wrapping? It sounds like a faff but, can be a big time saver.
Like all composits and alloys, this must be an exaggerated case of flexibility over heat stability. Never seen panels so bendy! And that was at 5ºC! I think I might leave the wrapping for a little while. It's cool to change the colour, but it's a massive faff and my setup right now really isn't the best!! I reckon I'll drop Motoproworks a line and let the do the photoshopping for me!! :D

I embraced the ugly slime green!!! I do have a question... How do you like the Hepco & Becker? From afar, it looks like very good quality.
I can embrace the ugly, but in a different color! 😜 I really like the Hepco&Becker stuff. I had the same ally bins on the Versys, so i know that they’re good. Everything is really well made and solid though. Plus the panniers are actually lighter than the stock ones! (Not including the racks, of course).

Always busy sadly mate. TH-cam still isn’t covering the rent, so it always gets bumped behind the jobs! 🫣. So far I’ve not found the Tourance too bad. Not as bomb proof confidence inspiring as the Avon Spirits or Mich R5‘s, but so far no issues.

True, but the manual tells you to remove all the side fairings to get at the headlight! 🙉. Plus some kind soul had fished my Acc connectors into the little cubby on the left, where the heated seat switch goes. Disaster!! Still, i had to take the tank off anyway.
I'm not a fan of orange either, but I wouldn't have the ambition to putting that much work into just changing the color of a bike. And besides, isn't it heresy to have a non-orange KTM? That is like having a Ducati that isn't red (with a special pass for the DesertX).
Nah, do what you want with your ride, I say! Otherwise we'd all be the same! I can guarantee that mine is the only 1090 with this (slightly thrown together) colour scheme!
I think the area is open enough that the heat will get out, especially while moving. I'll just stick in some reflective stuff to shield from when the bike is running at standstill.
@AndyManCam ye it's a huge v twin, ofc it generates a fair amount of heat standing at signal lights, traffic jams, dunno Railway gates. 👍 just wondering what ktm says about that issue. You don't want to see it burning down. That is serious stuff. Seen such at belly pans of race fairings but never that far up and these r down (just as belly pans usually r ^^). 😮
I reckon it’s probably not often much of an issue. I just messed with it and pulled the two halves of the plastic molding apart. Normally you probably wouldn’t notice.
You are now oficially *HandyManCam* , *EXCELLENT WORK* and looks a million dollars but I'm sorry there's still toooo much ORANGE for my own personal taste but HELL IT LOOKS GOOD!!!!!!
When I see the quality of those panels it’s scary, my Ducati panels are lovely, even better than my previous BMWs. Looks like removing panels and refitting is just as much a pain though, the right upper fairing panel on my Multi V2S was a nightmare! Admire your patience and it looks far better👍
I guess it's a bit of a double edged sword. For me, I wanted a bike that I can take anywhere and I wouldn't cry about it if I chucked it on the floor here and there. For that, these cheap, floppy panels are perfect. As we've seen here, I ruined something by messing with it and then managed to replace almost ALL odf the bikes external plastics for just over 200€. I cant imagine Ducati panels, as beautiful as they most likely are, will be replaceable so cheaply. ALso the floppy, rubberyness of it all means the KTM panels will likely get away from most drops with a slight scuff, which really doesn't bother me. An adventure bike should have a few scars and scrapes really!!

Is getting the panels painted an option or is that a no go with all that wobbly plastic? There are some nice graphics kits around too - some don't even look like you're off on the Dakar and have only minimal orange bits! Remember, Shaun had one on his.......
Nah, I reckon that weird rubbery stuff would likely cause chaos with paint! I'm happy to sit on it as is for now and I'll check out the graphics kits further down the line.
KTM plastic are built for off road . like most of road drops just bounce back . like the sliver looks better I just bought a KTM the orange is growing on me .
I don't mean to sound harsh, but you buggered that up good, bonny lad! Even if you had the skills and it turned out perfect , who is going to buy that 'Custom' KTM off you used? What dealer is going to give you a good trade in price? You could always donate it to your 'totally not corrupt' pal, Zelensky, I suppose lol . I hate orange, too, but the dire reliability is the main reason I never went the KTM route. Anyways, onward and upward.
I think you actually do want to sound harsh, Tone. Lucky for you, you succeeded. I honesty couldn't care less about the resale price. I bought the bike for me and for me to ride, not for the next guy. Because I'm not in the PCP/finance system, I can do that and actually enjoy my bike as if I'll never pass it on. Plus, as you saw, for a fraction of the price of the bike, I can replace all the panels and have an as new stock bike. No problem. Not sure where you're going with the Ukranian angle there but I honestly welcome the widely shared attitude about KTM reliability. Because of that, I've gotten a fully loaded ADV bike for 60% of what it would have cost to get an equally specced and aged BMW GS. GS's that are currently experiencing ANOTHER drivetrain recall. Research shows me that the 1090 was a glorious sweetspot in KTM's history and I can find only happy customers, with the odd niggle that frankly belongs to real motorcycling. I regret nothing!

Distinct lack of squeegee! I have wrapped 0 things, but watched dozens of videos, which I'm sure you'll agree makes me an expert. They all use at least one squeegee to do those hard to reach places. Squeegee it.

Each to their own! I wouldn’t have a Red Ferrari either. Unless it was free, of course! It’s the performance that’s important. The color is easy to change. The performance, not so much.
Dealer stickers shouldn't be allowed. Using them to cover damage is pretty appalling behaviour. Mad that the paint sticks better to the stickers than the plastics. Do you think that it's bad paintwork and filler also covering damage? Strange for the other panel to have the same though. I'm pretty sure I couldn't take on this job now. I would have done a lot more than look at the camera when the wrap tore on the bad panel.
I agree. Or at the least they should ask the customer if they want them! TBH I no longer think they hid anything, it's got to be all about the proximity to the hot water system. The panel has two layers and the heat obviously loosened the bond between them and then me pulling on the cold sticker forced the issue! It's not my first time fudging up great big sheets of vinyl, so I've perfected the swear suppression techniques! :D
Vinyl wrapping is a bitch for sure. But you inspired me to try it myself with your CB tank wrap. And, I think it came out pretty good on my CB. Check out the vid of my work on my YT channel.

All the KMTs i rode where the same idea. super motor, the best driving components, weirdly bad components for the rest. mirrors etc. What windshield combo are you using?
Glorious is in the eye of the beholder!! It's an AWESOME bike, but orange really is one of my absolute least favourite colours!! I guess I would always rather have a great motor and crappy plastics TBH! Nobody to admire your paintjob when you're at the top of a mountain! The screen is the stock one, with an MRA spoiler that cannibalised off of a DL650 screen that I managed to pick up for 20€. Haven't really had the chance to properly try it out yet, but early signs are better than stock on it's own.
I don't think wrapping those super flexi panels is ever going to work to be honest. The reason they are cheap to replace is because they are cheap full stop. Not sure what you were thinking with that silver grey colour wrap either. Much better idea to replace the panels and it's much better now. I think it's probably still a 'work in progress'. I quite like orange...just not on bikes 🤣 She's never going to be the best looking girl in the car park is she? Just sayin... 🤣
You're possibly right Paul. Though there are lots of companies successfully selling sticker kits that seem to work OK. The vinyl I ordered was supposed to be a deeper almost gunmetal grey, so really it'S good that it all went south because it's much better now! I don't need it to be the best looking on the lot, I just need it to take me to the next one quicker and more comfortably than the Honda did!

In the other direction, why on earth would i buy a GS, because it isn’t orange?! I want the bike that does the bike things that i want it to do, for the price that i can afford. The color is entirely secondary. Also i hate the fact that KTM have such limited color options. And if there weren’t thousands who felt the same, there wouldn’t be so many graphics companies churning out different designs for these bikes. Buy the bike. Make the bike your own. Ride the bike. Job done!

Always busy sadly mate. TH-cam still isn’t covering the rent, so it always gets bumped behind the jobs! 🫣. So far I’ve not found the Tourance too bad. Not as bomb proof confidence inspiring as the Avon Spirits or Mich R5‘s, but so far no issues.

If you think that’s bad you have to remove half a dozen plastic panels just to get to the ACC1 & 2 connectors on the 2022 Super Adventure
Same on this one! I fitted Aux lights and a USB socket last week and had to strip of pretty much EVERYTHING!!

True, but the manual tells you to remove all the side fairings to get at the headlight! 🙉. Plus some kind soul had fished my Acc connectors into the little cubby on the left, where the heated seat switch goes. Disaster!! Still, i had to take the tank off anyway.
I'm not a fan of orange either, but I wouldn't have the ambition to putting that much work into just changing the color of a bike. And besides, isn't it heresy to have a non-orange KTM? That is like having a Ducati that isn't red (with a special pass for the DesertX).
Nah, do what you want with your ride, I say! Otherwise we'd all be the same! I can guarantee that mine is the only 1090 with this (slightly thrown together) colour scheme!

So the fault is systemically. Shielding it won't help much since hot air rises again. Maybe cut air intake / scoop.
I think the area is open enough that the heat will get out, especially while moving. I'll just stick in some reflective stuff to shield from when the bike is running at standstill.
@AndyManCam ye it's a huge v twin, ofc it generates a fair amount of heat standing at signal lights, traffic jams, dunno Railway gates. 👍 just wondering what ktm says about that issue. You don't want to see it burning down. That is serious stuff. Seen such at belly pans of race fairings but never that far up and these r down (just as belly pans usually r ^^). 😮
I reckon it’s probably not often much of an issue. I just messed with it and pulled the two halves of the plastic molding apart. Normally you probably wouldn’t notice.

When I see the quality of those panels it’s scary, my Ducati panels are lovely, even better than my previous BMWs. Looks like removing panels and refitting is just as much a pain though, the right upper fairing panel on my Multi V2S was a nightmare! Admire your patience and it looks far better👍
I guess it's a bit of a double edged sword. For me, I wanted a bike that I can take anywhere and I wouldn't cry about it if I chucked it on the floor here and there. For that, these cheap, floppy panels are perfect. As we've seen here, I ruined something by messing with it and then managed to replace almost ALL odf the bikes external plastics for just over 200€. I cant imagine Ducati panels, as beautiful as they most likely are, will be replaceable so cheaply. ALso the floppy, rubberyness of it all means the KTM panels will likely get away from most drops with a slight scuff, which really doesn't bother me. An adventure bike should have a few scars and scrapes really!!

Is getting the panels painted an option or is that a no go with all that wobbly plastic? There are some nice graphics kits around too - some don't even look like you're off on the Dakar and have only minimal orange bits! Remember, Shaun had one on his.......
Nah, I reckon that weird rubbery stuff would likely cause chaos with paint! I'm happy to sit on it as is for now and I'll check out the graphics kits further down the line.

KTM plastic are built for off road . like most of road drops just bounce back . like the sliver looks better I just bought a KTM the orange is growing on me .

Overall that's a good job. The replacement panels are better than the plain silver. Now if you can rid of the ugly KTM head light! ...!

I don't mean to sound harsh, but you buggered that up good, bonny lad! Even if you had the skills and it turned out perfect , who is going to buy that 'Custom' KTM off you used? What dealer is going to give you a good trade in price? You could always donate it to your 'totally not corrupt' pal, Zelensky, I suppose lol . I hate orange, too, but the dire reliability is the main reason I never went the KTM route.

I think you actually do want to sound harsh, Tone. Lucky for you, you succeeded. I honesty couldn't care less about the resale price. I bought the bike for me and for me to ride, not for the next guy. Because I'm not in the PCP/finance system, I can do that and actually enjoy my bike as if I'll never pass it on. Plus, as you saw, for a fraction of the price of the bike, I can replace all the panels and have an as new stock bike. No problem. Not sure where you're going with the Ukranian angle there but I honestly welcome the widely shared attitude about KTM reliability. Because of that, I've gotten a fully loaded ADV bike for 60% of what it would have cost to get an equally specced and aged BMW GS. GS's that are currently experiencing ANOTHER drivetrain recall. Research shows me that the 1090 was a glorious sweetspot in KTM's history and I can find only happy customers, with the odd niggle that frankly belongs to real motorcycling. I regret nothing!
...... hmm, fair points. No, I was trying not to be too critical, indeed injecting some humour, because we've ALL buggered things up that seemed a good idea at the time. And bugger it up you did. To err is to be human, is it not? Fully agree re. BMW GS. An overrated, expensive mythos. Ukraine? It's not me virtue signalling 'the current thing' ' via a channel thumbnail. Distinct lack of squeegee! I have wrapped 0 things, but watched dozens of videos, which I'm sure you'll agree makes me an expert. They all use at least one squeegee to do those hard to reach places. Squeegee it.
I did actually break out the squeegee at one point. But at 1000x speed it’s a blink and you’ll miss it Situation! Thanks for the expertise though! 👍🏻

Dealer stickers shouldn't be allowed. Using them to cover damage is pretty appalling behaviour.
Mad that the paint sticks better to the stickers than the plastics. Do you think that it's bad paintwork and filler also covering damage? Strange for the other panel to have the same though.
I'm pretty sure I couldn't take on this job now. I would have done a lot more than look at the camera when the wrap tore on the bad panel.

I agree. Or at the least they should ask the customer if they want them! TBH I no longer think they hid anything, it's got to be all about the proximity to the hot water system. The panel has two layers and the heat obviously loosened the bond between them and then me pulling on the cold sticker forced the issue! It's not my first time fudging up great big sheets of vinyl, so I've perfected the swear suppression techniques! :D

How dare you take off the glorious orange of a KTM? But again welcome to the team and you alredy broke your cherry by fiddling with the crappy materials. All the KMTs i rode where the same idea. super motor, the best driving components, weirdly bad components for the rest. mirrors etc.
What windshield combo are you using?
Glorious is in the eye of the beholder!! It's an AWESOME bike, but orange really is one of my absolute least favourite colours!! I guess I would always rather have a great motor and crappy plastics TBH! Nobody to admire your paintjob when you're at the top of a mountain! The screen is the stock one, with an MRA spoiler that cannibalised off of a DL650 screen that I managed to pick up for 20€. Haven't really had the chance to properly try it out yet, but early signs are better than stock on it's own.
I don't think wrapping those super flexi panels is ever going to work to be honest. The reason they are cheap to replace is because they are cheap full stop. Not sure what you were thinking with that silver grey colour wrap either. Much better idea to replace the panels and it's much better now. I think it's probably still a 'work in progress'. I quite like orange...just not on bikes 🤣 She's never going to be the best looking girl in the car park is she? Just sayin... 🤣
You're possibly right Paul. Though there are lots of companies successfully selling sticker kits that seem to work OK. The vinyl I ordered was supposed to be a deeper almost gunmetal grey, so really it'S good that it all went south because it's much better now! I don't need it to be the best looking on the lot, I just need it to take me to the next one quicker and more comfortably than the Honda did!

In the other direction, why on earth would i buy a GS, because it isn’t orange?! I want the bike that does the bike things that i want it to do, for the price that i can afford. The color is entirely secondary. Also i hate the fact that KTM have such limited color options. And if there weren’t thousands who felt the same, there wouldn’t be so many graphics companies churning out different designs for these bikes. Buy the bike. Make the bike your own. Ride the bike. Job done!
