2003 Toyota Rav4 | Excessive White Smoke?

  • Bought a 2003 Rav4, 170k miles, but I've noticed that it really seems like an excessive amount of white smoke is coming from the exhaust. I'm really hoping it's just vapor from the cold...
    Outside temperature was about 37° F at the time of filming.
    I also forgot to mention in the video that about 2 days after buying this, I got P0420 and P0430 CEL codes. Really hoping that's just oxygen sensors and not the Cat itself... Maybe it's related to this white smoke from the exhaust?

    Some car like the Nissan Cashqai have this issue...condensation..and it keeps smoking long..
    Sometimes is just the way the exhaust is built.
    Ik it has a big end silencer,or how it hangs..the combustion vapors cool off on the metal of the silencer..and droo to the bottom ..thts why sometimes you see waterdrips coming out of the pipe.
    Just wait for warmer weather and if it stays..than its bad.

    My corolla does the same. When it warms up, everything is normal.
    But the other cars on the road - same weather - don't do same

    It's condensation. My car does the same thing even when its warm with a lot of humidity in the air.

    Condensation , it’s water vapor

    A friends husband told me it's normal. I had him look at my truck and asked when mine is the same but with more smoke. The husband told me it's normal for exhaust pipes even though I still get worried when I'm driving. Though my truck just passed smog about a month ago.

    This is either the head gasket but probably not OR more likely your catalytic converters or O2 sensors. What you're seeing is not smoke it is almost like steam. I can see water dripping out of the pipe so it is water vapour. I would check your catalytic converters and O2 sensors. They can cause this

    It looks like condensation. My car does this to when it’s like 40-50 degrees. After a while it should go away.

    My fiat stilo does the same thing when it's cold. I checked for the blown head gasket with a chemical tester, it doesn't show anything. The coolant doesn't go low. No chocolate milk under the oil cap either. However I also experience a bad cat codes sometimes. Gas analysis passes but the HC and CO values are close to the limit. I think this might be the case of excessive smoke. Not a bad engine itself.

    I had a ram 1500 that did something similar to this but not the this degree whatsoever, got rid of the truck because the piston went so I bought a ram 2500 and its basically done exactly this since I bought it, I swear its been getting worse but I'm not entirely sure. When the truck sits at idle for awhile it comes out the tailpipes and water does drip out but when I finally hit the gas, it comes shooting out and creates a smoke cloud. My dad who seems to apparently know everything about vehicles (funny ikr) claims there's nothing wrong with it.. It does it when its -20 and it does it when its 80. It smells gassy but its not blue looking and Idk if its my oil seeping in. I've heard bad cats or o2 sensors can cause this as well but to me it doesn't seem like that would be the main problem

    Perfectly normal IMO. It’s not smoke, it’s water vapor.

  • @dillbags1994
    @dillbags1994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok you have condensation in the pipe and the other thing it could be if it starts and runs for a bit then take it for a drive see if it disappears if it does probably your valve stem seals have gone bad or are worn out if it stays like that all the time your piston rings or possibly a head gasket leak or blown head gasket but from what you said probably not a blow head gasket look in the coolent see if theres oil let the car cool down run the car with the coolent cap off if she bubbles it could be head gasket

    • @youandiryan
      @youandiryan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If his valve stem seals or rings were gone the smoke would be blue. And would linger around. This smoke or Steam is disappearing quickly. And it is not blue. That is almost like steam. This could be a head gasket. Or his cats and 02 sensors are gone

      This looks like a small leak in head gasket.
      In one cylinder.After 30 minutes it should stop until it cools and is restarted and it will take 30 minutes again to stop smoking.
      A very tiny amount of water.
      It took 2,000+ miles for my car TOYOTA Camry XLE v6 too burn around 16oz of water so it never overheated and the oil is fine the coolant is not mixing. It’s a fault where combustion gas is seeping into the coolant system heres the kicker,this cooling system your mentioning has a leak somewhere that is allowing the gas too escape so this is why there is no symptoms one usually attributes to head gasket failure.
      Blue devil sealer is needed,must remove the spark plug from whichever cylinder is leaking before adding the sealer and leave it out till the blue devil process is complete

      The P0420 & P0430 are still ongoing, but I posted this to reddit /r/Cartalk and everyone was pretty much in agreement that it was just condensation from the cold weather, nothing to be worried about.

      Abdul-Hakeem Burns that kind of smoke also indicates a good combustion according to a mechanic. Hope that's our case.

    Water vapor your fine if it's whiter than than its your head gasket is blown or a cracked block you will be fine once the exhaust heats up it goes away if it's warm out and you see a lot of white smoke your fucked for the most part your totally fine just hot exhaust meting cold air

      Not exactly
      If the guy who sold it has straight water instead of coolant and the leak is small it’s well need i say more lol

      Mines done that since overheating and the mechanics didn't have time to help, they said open the radiator cap when engine is cold and put water in.. till full and keep it full of water until next year whenever the mechanics shop re opens.. a guy said to just get some Sealer.. to drain one litre of Coolant then when car is warm and running Add the bottle of sealer.. but I don't know if that's safe to do or not.. my smoke is worse than yours.. hope you're doing Okay.. RAV4 Great Little Cars to Own, never had any trouble till now .. no visible leaks either.. engine is not happy ATM, kinda shakes a little bit when starting her up So Not Sure what to do next..
