    Have you ever had this problem with your Porsche Cayman, Boxster or 911? White/Bluish smoke on a cold start, and it makes a giant, embarrassing and smelly smokescreen in the driveway or on the street… That was exactly what happened to my 2008 Porsche Cayman. Although this problem seems more common among 986 Boxster and 996 911, some other Porsche sports cars may have the same issue. This, in my case, was caused by a broken AOS (Air Oil Separator). Fortunately, I got it fixed in its early stage of failure, otherwise, it would have been way worse…
    Watch today’s video to see if this issue is what you are facing and see if my solution can help you. Good luck!

    I have the same problem with my bmw petrol 3 series. All started after bmw did my oil and filter service. So I think its a similar cause. Booked in now to take it back to bmw. This video helped me narrow down my problem. Plus when I lift the oil cap i think i get suction too. Not 100% sure. But it sure makes a funny noise when i do.

    Great video, well explained and nicely presented. My 997 only smokes very occasionally. If the car is started from cold and then goes on a journey it's perfect. It only seems to smoke if the engine is run for a couple of minutes then shut down, (let say the time it takes to remove the car from the garage to the drive). Jump back to leave and the smoke sometimes appears, after that nothing. stop / start as much as you want and the exhaust is clear. Not sure if this is the same issue but Porsche tell me it's not uncommon for this to happen due to the engine design but I will get this oil separator checked if it gets any worse.

    I have this on my 987 (07 with 28k miles). Can't wait to see this!
    Well now that I've watched it I'm confident the AOS is exactly the issue. Thank you for the video!
    I just replaced the thermostat sensor (it was giving me a warning and the gauge would instantly drop to zero then randomly come back up to show normal temp). But it fixed it.

  • @terrylessmann2274
    @terrylessmann2274 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A sooty exhaust tip is also an AOS failure sign. Tracking your 987 is harder on an AOS than just street driving, as the high RPMs can cause the diaphragm to tear.

    • @WhatWeDrive
      @WhatWeDrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip. I remember 987 having a Motorsport AOS that’s designed for track use so that will probably help those who wish to track it.

    If i hear motors sit the piston rings shrink as they cool and allows a slight bit of oil to enter the combustion chamber. so when you start up it burns it out. Totally normal for a horizontally opposed motor. Subaru motors do the same.

    The only thing I'd like to add is that the AOS is a badly designed part and is prone to failure. I'd expect the new AOS to last 3-4 yrs and the smoke will slowly start to return. That was my experience anyhow and I'm assuming that's the reason why owners don't replace them and just suffer the smokey start up.

    mine is boxster 987.1 and I also got white smoke at cold start. I replaced AOS myself and no white smoke afterwards. AOS parts only cost around 120USD. If you go to dealer, they charged you service fee around 180USD. The service fee is more costly than the part itself. Unbelievable

    I don't think that oil cap test really proved anything. You should check if the oil cap is still getting "sucked back in". I bet it is, because like you've been alluding to this entire video, the crank case is connected to the intake manifold with this oil separator in the middle, the intake manifold will produce a vacuum as long as the car is running.

    • @WhatWeDrive
      @WhatWeDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comment. You are right about the vacuum while the car is running. I just discovered that when the AOS failed, the vacuum was significantly stronger. I think there is a difference. The mechanic who worked on it also told me about this so I am happy that you brought it up.
