PRS HDRX Amps: The Story Behind the Design | PRS Guitars

  • PRS HDRX amps bring power and balance. Featuring a newly-documented Hendrix Touring Circuit, the PRS HDRX amp is heavily inspired by one of Hendrix’s personal amps purportedly used at Woodstock, which Paul Reed Smith and PRS Amp Designer Doug Sewell were able to study. The PRS HDRX is designed to push the high-end so it is very clear, but not so much that it’s harsh, so the amp shines without glaring and allows for aggression that can be backed off for smooth, sweet tones.
Signal Chain Notes: The signal from the HDRX 100 & 50-watt amp heads (seen in-frame) was sent to mirrored speaker cabinets (out of frame) and close mic'd with a Byer Dynamic M160 on one speaker & a Shure SM7 on another. These close mics are accompanied by one of Paul Smith's custom-built room mics. These mic signals were sent to multiple custom-built RCA tube-driven mic preamps and were recorded through a UA Apollo x8p and ProTools.

Hey, Paul...I was at Woodstock. Hendrix played on Monday morning, as I recall. LOTS of people had left earlier, so the acoustics in the natural amphitheatre was naturally amplified. I remember Jimi as playing way too loud...sorta like I used to do with my '65 Twin Reverb amp. But, the reason was the lack of absorption since the crowd was so thinned out. So, it wasn't Jimi's problem...it was the acoustics of the outdoor venue. No idea if that makes any sense, in terms of amp/guitar building.
Incidentally, that's where I met Carlos Santana and Mike Shrieve. A sort of coincidence. Be well. Keep up the transformative good work. [I got the SE Santana in 2002. Still plays great.] Thanks. Dr. Gary K.

Coming back to this video to confirm after having my HDRX 50 for almost a year now, and it was worth EVERY PENNY. Definitely a lot cleaner sounding in person, not that typical Super Lead sound. Sounds just like the album in real life, can’t explain it. The bottom end absolutely GROWLS on open chords.

Poplar is an odd choice for cabinet material in a Hendrix inspired cab since his old 100 logo Marshall 1982 was a standard birch plywood cab .
I would love to see inside one of Hendrix 1966 100 logo marshall cabs to see exactly what speakers were in them .
The consensus is they had very ealry G12H speakers which would make them G12H25s rather than 30s as the G12M started out at 29 watts and the G12H at 25. They were bunped up to 25 watts and 30 watts respectively around Mid 1968.
Hendrix cabs likely had the 55Hz bass Cone G12H25s as well .
Sounds like choosing the Creamback H75 was proper choice as it's the closest available Celestion that also has higher power handling .

He’s made no secret of the fact that his biggest influence in terms of both sound and playing is Hendrix and I think if there is any one guitarist today who can do justice to the memory of Hendrix and his sound, is him. No doubt if he plays this amp, he’ll be jumping ship to PRS in no time at all.

So, instead of getting a Marshall 1959HW hand-wired (!) in England clone of Hendrix's amp for 2K EUR one can buy a PRS HX100 imported PCB and just assembled in the USA clone foe 3.6K EUR (Thomann prices). Like, who would actually do something irrational?

Because most of the legit Hendrix recording tones werent of those marshals he played live

@@kodykindhart5644 Modded Marshalls here and there? Sure. Still, no justification for selling import amp with no master volume in 2021 for 3.6K.
By the way this is almost the same with the previous gen Archons who were advertised and marketed as US made but looking inside you know they are Korean.

Just buy an nice old Marshall for that kind of money and be done with it and have an amp that will only go up in value

Import tariffs. Same goes for Americans buying Vox Amps or anything else British. Like Morgan motorcycles.

@@travelinman482 the PRS amps are not US made. They just do a final assembly there. Unlike Mesa Boogie or similar truly US made brands.

PRS should look into making a Synergy module for Boutique Amp Dist. WHY? Because many of us who own real preamps would love to have a Archon, HX, Tremonti, Dallas, ETC... Without putting your awesome gear into plugins, look into Synergy guys, its a great way to get into the Boutique market for the players who would like to own these preamps in a module.
