Tell me about how hard it is. My 26 year old son is an electrical engineer at Boeing in St. Louis Missouri. He just got a B minus on his final and maintains an A in his masters class. So he’s working for Boeing and studying to get his masters.
He’s working on pilot simulation and he does find his job at Boeing somewhat boring and I feel concerned about that. He wants to get into RF frequency, that’s his dream. Best of luck

Starting my “General Engineering” degree this upcoming semester. Transferred from automation and robotics at a Community College. After I finish my associates I will transfer to my local university to get my bachelors in either Mechanical or Electrical. Still got some time for thinking but keeping up with your videos. EE might not be right. CE might be better or Mechanical. I should have done ME because I also like robotics. programming you can learn on your own, same as electronics, but not mechanical
That's sounds like mechatronics which what I also want to do but it's not available everywhere. I read the best thing to do is study computer engineering and fill your electives with mechanical classes

What makes you love it so much? Which sub-field are you in and how are you holding up with it? I'm a sophomore and confused as I'm starting as a ME.
My advice would be to not just search the topics you'll be learning but also search for job postings to get an idea of the real day to day work you'll be doing upon graduating.
This is what stayed me from mechanical to electrical, most of the mechanical jobs in my area seemed very uninteresting to me, unless i was working in the aerospace industry, which there are no jobs of that type in the north of England.
However electrical and electronics jobs, to me, seemed much more interesting, i am fascinated by electricity.

I was in a CS degree and dropped out. A lot of issues plus I didn't believe I was good enough for it. When I looked back at my grades on exams and such, I realized that I was actually getting good grades on them.
Now going back to school I'm deciding between electronics and mechanical engineering. I'm leaning towards the Electrical(electronics) side because of the upside in career trajectory, entrepreneurship, and even patent law.
Can you please elaborate on why electrical engineering could be better for aspiring entrepreneurs compared to mechanical? Thank you ✌️
Electrical isn’t going to make you a better entrepreneur than mechanical or any other degree. It’s got to do with your mindset, which depends on if you want to work as an employee for the rest of your life.
It is an accepted fact that the more abstract something is the harder it is to grasp. For this reason electrical is inherently harder than mechanical and requires a higher cognitive function. Having a higher cognitive function allows you a higher chance to accomplish your entrepreneurial aspirations.
abstraction is also a tool that is used to get rid of detail and noise to make things EASIER, not harder. abstract concepts arent necessarily harder, just whatever u like more
Personally, I don't care a lot about designing circuits, it's fun at times but anything more than a few LEDs and a microcontroller isn't my cup of tea. What I enjoy most is assembling stuff with motors and servos, designing robots, 3D printing, etc. Programming is also cool. And I'm good in math in physics. Would you recommend me to go into ME or EE?
Mechanical engineering. Know that you will have to know a little bit of electrical.

According to Mr. Voorhees, mechanical engineering is the most versatile major to acquire. You may specialize after you complete your degree. I would recommend looking at his other videos on the subject.
What math and science should you brush up on before going into electrical engineering. Or do a video on what to brush up on to help in both or all three engineering courses. Thanks for all your videos they help
As an undergraduate I don't know much about the math and science required in electrical engineering. But I do know there are lot of differential calculations involved in electrical engineering when it comes to math, and also when it comes to the science behind electricity it's basically electronics, RF waves, thermodynamics etc... u might also come across a little bit of programming as well

Ya that’s fine. That’s what I did too. But you should still work for a period of time to make sure that you understand how to do things. Join a startup team and learn with people who have already been learning and failing and learning and failing. Read the stories of all the greats who were with Steve Jobs or who broke away from a big startup team. Usually that is the path. It’s super rare to just start and figure it all out alone in the beginning. Does that make sense? Thank you
Only 15% of Mechanical engineering is about design and forces. The rest is advanced physics, i.e. fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics and computational methods. Which are all really damn tough to understand!
Yeah, I am an electrical engineer with a bachelors in physics, having studied physics I can definitely tell you mechanics is more difficult than electromagnetism in theory and math involved. Schrodinger's equation is actually derived from hamiltonian mechanics, which is from mechanics. Because the nature of waves is inherently in the mechanical domain.

I was literally having the exact same problem up until a few days ago. Comp Sci versus Mechanical Engineering, and I ended up just requesting my offer to switch to Electrical Engineering. It looks very interesting, and many of my friends parents / colleagues who went the EE route have software jobs too. I have been messing around with electronics for a bit and I really like it. I chose EE for the greater software crossover, the better masters options at my universities (EE Masters in AI, Software Eng , vs ME Masters in... ME), the more jobs, the better pay, the less competition, and my prediction of growth in EE with climate change and electrical cars becoming more essential!
Do computer engineering
I am in electrical engineering, and I love robotics and I am currently working on an autonomous drone and an autonomous vehicle as a hobby, but although my college offers robotics as an elective only for EEs and I take controls, electronics, and programming, but I am afraid that EE wasn't the right choice to get into professional robotics and that ME would've been better, so what's your advice?

Sina Dr robotics explains the three different paths to robotics: programming, electrical and mechanical. Mechanical if you are looking to design movement, electrical if you want to design the circuit boards and programming if you want to program the robot. Seems to me you wants to design the circuitry of a robotics system.

What would be the pro’s and con’s of dual majoring in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering compared to going for Mechatronics Engineering? What type of engineering will generally pay more and which has the greatest amount of freedom of what projects you choose and travel? Im trying to learn more about engineering as i know i want to go into engineering but not which type yet.
Hey Papi, thanks for the question. Double majoring in engineering should be avoided in my opinion, because you don't need it and the industry doesn't value another degree. Especially when they are so close anyways. And finally, it's not more education that makes you more valuable.
An ME can work in EE and an EE can work in ME. The way to do this is to stick to the one you like more, and take electives and do internships and network and build relationships in the direction of the other. This way you can bridge the gap and essentially do your own MTREs degree. Does this make sense?

I graduated in ee this past December and I have no idea to program. The class I took just through us into an advance coding class. I never done coding or programming before so throwing me in a class like that made me fall so behind and rush. I hated it! Should I apply to mechanical engineering jobs or a broad engineering job instead?
I still can't decide both of them looks so cool..I am still very young(14) but I am really inspired by the work of enginner...I have been thinking in my room for 5 hours 😭
Hahah well this is what most early stage engineers do. They over analyze things forever. You won't even really have the ability to decide, but the main thing is do you like programming or not? And how much do you like physics/calculus, because if you are a rock star at it, especially physics, then EE will be okay.

I got a question I am a current mechanical engineering student, but I am looking forward to work in the automotive industry. Should I pick electrical engineering since the future looks to be like all the cars will go electric?
I remember loading up on electrical electives for my final year of mechanical engineering because I thought power systems were cool. I didn’t have a good time in those classes 😂

@@andreas3850 part of it was we had to take the classes with electricals, and there was prerequisite knowledge in some cases that gave the electricals an edge over the mechanicals. The other part of it I think was just my interest level. I admired electrical engineering (and still do), but I wasn’t as interested in it as I thought. On the mechanical spectrum I’m more interested in the civil engineering side of things now.

I want to work on digital camera or smartphone camera hardware. Which types of engineering should I choose?
What would you say would make you the most competitive in college? I'm currently a freshman and taking the same curriculum as other MechE, but each semester is packed with 17-18 credits. I want to be able to stand out compared to the crowd, which is one reason I was considering getting my MS (one benefit of this is they have an accelerated program to get it in one year). I would like to go into the mechatronics field, but they don't have a degree/MS in it so I was thinking to get my undergrad in MechE and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering. If you have any suggestions or advice I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks! :)
Hey thanks so much for this question - I love it. Honestly the way is to become as much of a programmer as you can. Mechanical Engineers can nearly avoid all programming if they choose, and most will. But the path to success in standing out especially in mechatronics engineering is being able to program. It's one of the reasons electrical engineers will have more mechatronics opportunities than MEs.
So go learn Python, and pour all your extracurricular learning and career investment time into that okay? Machine Learning is the fastest growing career title and they make $185,000 median after benefits, and they can all work in robotics and mechatronics if they want.
Sure you can get your masters, but same thing, if you get it in EE or CPE, crush as much of the CS as you can. If you don't like programming and you have read all this, well then a MS in EE or CPE isnt the way. What you should do then is hyper specialize in one industry of mechatronics and built relationships and get internships and take tech electives all in that area so you are the best candidate around. Electrical/Computer Engineer. Understanding the computer science aspect would not hurt either
You mentioned that mechanics and electrical engineers can work together with for example a battery, but if someone were to have a degree on mechatronics with fuse both these knowleges, can they work with both aspects at the same time or is it too much for one person?
Mechatronics is a master of none so more likely you would be looked over since you have no specialization. They would rather choose a mechanical or electrical engineer. Mechatronics is more for robotics. Mechatronics isn’t an entire electrical and mechanical engineering degree into one no. It’s a portions of mech and electrical so you’ll be far behind a traditional mechanical and electrical engineer if you decide to get into a different sector of electrical or mechanical engineering. So unless you are really disciplined and think you an teach your self the rest go ahead and do it.
How possible is it to bridge the two sides and become a guru at both lol? What should be done in uni and early stages?
hi Jake love your videos. I wanted to ask for some advice. I am currently in computer Science in my second year, but have realised I hate programming and much prefer the electrical side of engineering or the mechanics side. I dont know what to do, I dont want to just quit and start over, I was thinking of maybe finishing my degree then doing a master in electrical engineering as I am taking quite a bit of math classes like calculus, diff equations, linear algebra etc. any advice would be amazing. thanks
Hey thanks for the comment. Okay so if you hate CS, then when you moving into engineering, you should avoid EE. EE is so close to CS already, it's basically half a programming degree. Mechanical Engineering is far less programming and honestly you can nearly fully avoid it if you like. Talk with your advisor, see how much of your credits will transfer into ME, and you'll be fine. You should not have to start over, and definitely don't choose a masters in EE if you dont like programming k? Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have already? @@JakeVoorhees mechanical engineers really cant avoid programming. In my case I'm a mechanical engineering student with specialization in mechatronics, but my classmates without the specialization actually can't escape programming because it is already part of our new curriculum in general. They program 3d models and simulations a lot and they're so difficult and it doesn't limit to only one programming language. I will really appreciate if he will take mechatronics engineering since he has a programming background though he hates it.
What about BEng mechanical engineering and then MEng/ MSc mechatronics. Kind of best of both worlds?
A lot of MTREs will end up getting masters degrees in order to be best suited for the industry between ME and EE. I think its a good plan, but you dont have to do a masters to be a mechatronics engineer. I suggest doing EE and taking some design classes in mechanics

Hi Jake! I graduated last yr as a mechanical engineer and was late to realize that I should’ve picked electrical engineering. My interests are robotics, aerospace, green energy, automotive, nanotech, apps and softwares, and AI. I’m planning now to do a masters in mechatronics. Is this a good choice? Or should I study electrical engineering again or maybe CS or masters in EE or CS (i just don’t know if I can because I’m an ME)
Hey thanks so much for the comment. It's okay that you did ME rather than EE. Don't worry. Good question. It depends on what you want for a career track afterwards. Mechatronics has a bunch of avenues, in fact 4: ME side, EE, CPE, and CS side. So what do you want to do? If you think you should have chosen EE, its probably because youre actually good at and enjoy programming. Is that the case? If so, I really think a masters in CS on top of a ME degree is relaly strong. You can always stay within ME and use your CS skills, or straight up get CS related roles like Machine Learning Engineer, which is $185,000 median salary and the fastest growing job title in the world right now (as per an Indeed 2019 report). Here, get some more ideas about career future things:

Hey, I'll be learning in a technical college (it's high school but you get a job as well as the possibility of going to uni, it's a European thing), where I've chosen the electrician technician (more of an electrical engineering thing) path over the mechatronics (leaning more into mechanical, having looked at the curriculum) path, having done my research on both. I'm good at maths and physics, robots don't really fascinate me, and although I've enjoyed all my physics classes, electromagnetism was my favourite despite being harder and more intimidating than mechanics, as it feel like magic lol. I'm fine with programming, don't love nor hate it.
For some reason, I overthink everything to death, including this. So what do you think? Have I made a good choice?

I am an EE and work with IT Consulting, specifically with Machine Learning, Data Science, etc. Engineering is the best problem solving training that someone may have.

I want to do mechanical , electrical and computer science engineering at the same time coz I like connecting things from different streams ,I want to innovate and develope new technologies. Next year I will be in college ,I want to finish these 3 branches in a time of 4-5 years. I think mechatronics is the future. There are only 28 ABET mechatronics engineering programs in the world and just 3 in the USA. So oftentimes you have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is a great path. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. You would do that by for example, majoring in EE and taking more electronics courses and less about power or telecommunications. You would take robotics electives, signals and controls, and circuits courses, etc. Your CS related courses should revolve around mechatronics rather than something else, and so on.

Ya absolutely. There are probably more MEs and EEs and CPEs and CS majors working in aerospace engineering than people with aerospace engineering degrees.
I actually think this is the better avenue into a career in aerospace. You have more flexibility and options this way, with an EE degree. You can work in many roles and step outside AE if you choose.
What type of job that you want is the major consideration? EE can go into circuit design, signals and control, instrumentation and measurement, programming, mechatronics, machine learning, electromagnetics and radiation, etc and all of those things are in aerospace engineering.

Hey thanks for the comment. As long as your engineering technology program is ABET accredited, you can do anything you want. It is considered a full engineering degree, despite lots of people thinking its something lesser than engineering. You don't even HAVE to get a master's, so don't feel like your need that. Right now as I type this in early 2021, there are only 28 programs for mechatronics engineering, vs 337 mechanical engineering programs and 315 electrical engineering programs. So it’s very common to advance towards mechatronics with a degee in either mechanical or electrical engineering.
It is possible with either approach, but I believe electrical engineering is a little better than mechanical engineering for the pursuit of this. If you lean towards ME, you should be more interested in the design of the parts and components within the robots.
As for electrical engineers interested in robotics, you can do many things. You can work with the signals and controls, the circuitry, and of course the programming itself.

The proximity to programming is one beauty of EE, you are closer to a computer programmer / CS major than any other type of engineering. In fact, many EEs end up working at full time software engineers or programmers for their career. Yes there are still less mechatronics programs than needed so you sort of have to build your own. Mechatronics engineering can be done within your existing engineering major as a sort of “customize your own emphasis” type of degree. First, understand that mechatronics is basically a combination of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with some computer programming included (plenty of that in EE). Then, take tech elective courses and build relationships and do research in the direction of the other. I think EE has a stronger future than ME, so if you really like math and if you can program well, then EE is the way. Depends on which part you want to work on. You can be an inventor of the electronics side, in which case EE would be fine. If you enjoy the physical component side of things, then mechanical is the way

Personally, I think career wise, I will stick to small company; it closer to entrepreneurship. Not sure if you have a video on small , mid, large company but that will good one. I don't even need credit for this; just sharing the love.
Yeah I have been thinking about this for a video, thanks so much. Large companies give you access to big salaries and big projects, and you may have more flexibility to move around the country, to travel for work, and there is more room for advancement and promotions are more likely. There is more pressure. More internal politics. Deadlines are real, and mistakes can be punished. This is why salaries are high. Bonuses can be high. But you are more of a number. Big companies can just replace people and move onto the next candidate.
Smaller companies are more like a family where they care about you. Your needs can be met. You may have less salary and less access to bigger projects, but I find people like their jobs more with a smaller company.
Then there are government jobs. Government jobs are notorious for their slow pace, no pressure, no deadlines, you make the rules, and you get paid an average salary for it. Your job is safe. You have great benefits. It's respectful. But your private sector friends will all be making more money and probably working a cooler job, and honestly probably liking their career more.
Then there is a startup. This is a super small team working on something very cool. There is less money, less or zero benefits, but a huge upside if you can pick a startup that actually moves the needle and changes the industry. Maybe up end up being employee #8 at what becomes the next big company?

Hey thanks for the comment. It's not really what you want to do. Double majoring in EE and ME would take at least an extra 2 years probably. Both have full year long senior projects, along with a lot of different tech and other types of electives, different core classes.
Plus, you cannot really launch both careers. You have to start one or the other, even with both degrees. And you cannot really know what you like or don't like until after you have worked for 2-3 years. So it's not even a thing.
The way to view your engineering career is to choose either ME or EE, probably based on your programming interests and skills alone, (if you like and are good at programming, do EE. If not, ME) and then focus on a sector that you love. If you like aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, robotics, etc - these are sectors.
MEs and EEs can work as either or type of engineer. This is another reason why you should not double major, because it is fully unnecessary. If you choose ME and you can code and work with electronics or power, you can get a lot of EE jobs. If you're an EE and you're interested in more of the hardware design or physical aspects within ME and want to lean on your coding skills to bridge the gap, you can easily work as an ME. EEs can work as MEs easier than the other way around.
So if you are truly on the fence an like to code, do EE. It's the better, more future proof, better paying, with more jobs available than ME.

I do have interests in both. Currently, I am better at programming than getting my hands stuck in and actually building things. But I also do want to get stuck in and actually build stuff to do with mechatronics and robotics. But also would love to be involved in power generation from an EE stand-view. I'm just at a cross-roads between choosing one or the other.
I just think to myself, if I major in Electrical and Electrical Engineering, would I be able to also do the practical stuff, such as making a remote controlled bionic arm (that also involves mechanical engineering) independently.
Like, do you think I'll be able to do my own projects like building drones and remote controlled cars and other really cool stuff like what StuffMadeHere, Mark Rober, JLaser and the Hacksmith make with just electrical and electronic engineering?

Yeah you can do any of that cool stuff with electrical / electronics engineering. Don't worry. You want to do EE because you will be able to program everything yourself.
