Since you're into robotics, try to develop software and programming skills since you may not develop these skills efficiently in engineering school which mainly focuses on EE courses (electrical circuits, electronic circuits, ect).

I was very torn in 2018 about if I was capable of doing engineering at university, but you and some other people ( e.g. MajorPrep) were one of the factors that helped sway me to believe I could go to uni and do engineering. I'm now completing my foundation year course this summer, and if all goes well then I'll be going onto Year 1 of Electrical & Electronic Engineering this autumn. 😃

The in depth you could go into the relationship between academic focuses and career application the better. Learning a little bit can make a choice seem easy. Learning a lot can make a choice seem overwhelming. Learning the full or fullest scope possible of something like choosing what to study for the right career can make a choice feel like it will the right one.

I'm electronic engineer in Mexico, during 10 years that I finish the engineering career, I've never seen anything like that, if it exists in mexican industry, most of the time a mechanical engineer does that, no electronics engineer.

I’d love to get into the development and design of musical instruments effects and equipment
In my work as an electrical engineer I'm principally focused on communications links to satellites. A P.E. license isn't needed for much of what we do in this field, however I have needed to use it a couple of times for certain filings our company was making with the government.
Mainly I got the P.E. license because I planned at some point in my career to do some consulting. In California and many other states there are restrictions on what kind of work you can do, and how you advertise your business where having the P.E. license checks the box on those issues.
The process of getting the P.E. license is a bit involved and for those younger engineers just getting out of school I would recommend taking the E.I.T. exam while the undergraduate engineering core topics are still fresh in your mind. An E.i.T. prep class isn't a bad idea for those a bit further removed from school. Then a few years down the road if you decide the P.E. license makes sense for you the E.I.T. exam is out of the way.
I'm about to get into the Engeneering field and I I found stark's picture very motivating😁
When I entered electrical engineering, my dream is to work on industries like those you have mentioned. But in my latter years in the course, I fell inlove with the physics involved, the academe life, from then I began exploring and teaching myself deeper physics concept than what our curriculum prescribe. Now I am undecided whether I will continue to get my degree or shift to BS Physics and pursue my new dream of being a University professor.

In your opinion, is there any one sub field of engineering that requires the most hands on math? I love math and creativity, which is why I was drawn to engineering. I’m curious if there is any one specialty that is more math heavy.
Very nice video. I went to school for HVAC. It pays well especially down here in Florida but I want to go beyond that now. Is electrical engineering the best option or how bout software engineering?
I've applied to do EE in university, maybe a masters in CS after. I'm interested in Finance, oil and gas, and large scale electrical systems, but I'm not sure which to go for!
Hey thanks for the comment. And yeah you don't have to know all that stuff right now. I would not even be thinking about grad school yet. You will have options of what tech electives to do in which case if you like the CS courses more, you can take more of those. You can then intern in CS roles and if you really are loving it a lot, CS grad school could be the way. But, finally, lots of EEs end up working in CS roles with their undergraduate degree alone. So don't worry about making a decision for something years away until you really need to and have more time to accumulate knowledge to help w that decision. You basically just use v=ir use an oscilloscope and Fourier analysis. You use a voltmeter and solve circuit puzzles
As an electrical engineering major this makes my choices much clearer!
Currently a computer science major but going to switch to EE and minor in physics. I want to work with robotics and aerospace crafts. I feel like this would be a better fit and more hands on. Started to hate being behind a screen hours on end.
Heyyy thanks for the comment. I think CS or EE are both great majors. I just recorded my own engineering degree tier list and made them tied for first. I know I knoooowww, some people are going to react to that but, there are 283 ABET accredited CS programs which makes them pretty close to an engineering degree. I do think EE is a slightly better major, as you know, it's an engineering degree, so you really can do whatever you want. CS majors cannot get engineering roles always, but EEs can get any sort of software jobs because they must know so much programming.
And about the minor in physics. Make sure you love physics and it doesn't feel like extra work and it doesn't hugely extend the amount of time you need to complete college, because that minor is mostly for you. No employer or decision maker will change their perspective on you as a candidate based on a major. Particularly physics, which doesn't really do much for you, along witht he fact that your EE degree has so much theoretical and challenging physics that it doesn't' galvanize your resume. But, what you will have is essentially a Physics minor you can achieve with maybe one or two extra classes. So if that is the situation, go for it.

EE seems like a good mix, I can learn some programming, get hands on with electronics, and touch on physics. I'm not great with math but im definitely trying my best.
And 100% physics will be purely for me but I always found it fascinating and I think it would help me a bit better in the aerospace industry.

I wish I knew about your channel back when I was in university studying electrical engineering. I completed my B. S. a year ago and I'm working at a company that specializes in subsea fiber optics which is really cool. But recently I'm at a crossroads because I almost feel like I went into the wrong major. What inspired me to get into electrical engineering was that when hurricane Sandy hit, I was out of power for more than two weeks. I realized how important electricity is to everyday life. I really liked the idea of working for NASA, Tesla, SpaceX, renewable energy, etc. I was good at math, physics, and chemistry in high school. I also went into electrical engineering because it was a good major that I felt would give me a lot of options in my professional life. I couldn't imagine doing anything else. But, I really struggled in school and kind of ended up disliking what I was studying but I graduated because I persevered and worked hard and never gave up. Now I'm thinking of going into data science or cyber security. I guess my question is should I be worried about potential job prospects in the future in terms of growth in my field? In my free time, I'm learning programming languages to enhance my resume because I don't have much experience in programming. I guess a second question would be, if I work at my current job, but let's say I want to switch over to a different industry or subfield like power or controls, or embedded systems, wouldn't that be difficult to do because I don't have experience in this fields? Sorry for the long comment, but I've been waiting to find someone like you lol. Thank you for all these inspirational and educational videos.

I was actually watching your networking live stream video, and you actually answered my first question about job prospects. There really is no way to tell what the future holds. But I should instead build long lasting relationships, good skills, and experience. And I should like what I do. And I also want to add, I like my current job. I like the people I work with and I think the technology is cool. A bit more background about me, I graduated with a BS in EE from NJIT, May 2019. I got my job two months after I graduated.
So please answer my second question which is towards the end of my first long comment. Thanks.
Also want to add a couple more things. I know GPA doesn't really matter, but I had a overall 2.85, and I had like 5 D's, my program was so hard D's were passing grades. This made feel like a failure, like I don't belong here. But If you were to ask classmates, roommates, and manager about my work ethic, that would say I have exceptional work ethic.
I'm also a bit introverted and don't feel comfortable in the whole career fair environment.
I didn't do much extracurricular activities cause I was always busy trying to pass my classes. I'm just trying to give you some more info because you might be getting more questions from me in the future lol. Thanks again, you're an inspiration.
And I'm also applying to jobs to gain employee status at my current job. I was hired as a contractor and was told but not promised obviously that I would get an offer. It's been over a year, my manager, and other co-workers are telling me to apply to other jobs, because the managing director may not give me an offer unless I get an offer from somewhere else. "Budgetary reasons"
So I've been looking at other entry level EE positions and seeing the skills that require and their responsibilities.
I joined the Navy as a part of their Advanced Electronics/ Computer Field and I’ve been planning to get my electrical engineering degree and transition to the civilian world

Question: Do electrical engineers actually build things? I am heavily interested in mechatronics engineering because I hear you can obtain a wide range of knowledge from it about building things, and I'd love to learn how to build things and maybe have that as a job
Hey good question. It depends on the avenue you go down. Power engineers and telecommunications engineers may not, but electronics and circuit design engineers can work with mechatronics easily. You can also enter a software developer role and work with robots or mechatronic systems that way.

My dad is an electrical engineer and he says what he does most of the time at work is make designs and stuff, and I want to be able to build those things. I don't want to do software or computer engineering as a job, because your siting in front of a computer all day and writing code doesn't suit me. I want to be able to make designs, then code and build electronic systems, which is why I want to do mechatronics, because it gives you lots of info about this. Do you know of any jobs that are like that?
Hey thanks for the reply and context. Some computer engineers can become computer hardware engineers and there are 71,000 in the US, so its the 5th most numerous engineering type - again we're talking hardware computer engineering alone. These are essentially electronics engineers working with computers.
In order to do mechatronics, you have to choose either ME or EE or CPE - there are only 3 ABET Mechatronics programs in the USA and they are with smaller schools, most of which you would not go to I am sure.
So you have to choose one of those and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is a great path. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. You would do that by for example, majoring in EE and taking more electronics courses and less about power or telecommunications. You would take robotics electives, signals and controls, and circuits courses, etc. Your CS related courses should revolve around mechatronics rather than something else, and so on.

Which school? That’s great they have the program but for some reason there are only three that are accredited by ABET, the body that says whether a programs graduates are eligible to sit for the Professional Engineering exam.
But if you look at their ME and CPE and EE programs, I bet you they are ABET accredited. The mechatronics programs are too new I think. So what if you go into some field that requires design and for you to become a PE? You could regret this moment.

Yeah this video just helped motivate me. My dream is to work for either SpaceX or create my own company to create and design mobile and wearable technologies. Even possibly do both.

I’m just trying to determine what sub discipline I would be trying to get into! I want to design and produce mobile phones and other tech.
Ah, so I started my EE degree when I was 16, but I really didn't know what I wanted to do specifically. I wanted to get all the degrees out there, thinking that would bring me some purpose since I love learning, but having completed a year of my bachelor's, it doesn't seem like this will be the case. I picked EE because it was broad, but now having so many interests in different research areas, industries, and businesses is making it very hard to choose a focus. My initial thought was just to do everything: get an MS and PhD on the way to the PE certification or vice versa.
However, I can't just nab degrees if I don't know what they're in or do research if I don't know what on. I can't even take the PE exam without choosing an industry. So, it's really important that I talk to people and figure out if their opportunities and lifestyles are for me. Where would you recommend me to speak to a body of professionals willing to offer this kind of insight on their lives?

Yeah so firstly, thank you for this insight and comment. And your situation is very common. There are a lot of young students, pre-college and in college, who think they have to stack degrees and choose their MS and or PhD before they finish their first or second year of undergrad. Which is entirely unnecessary you know?
Here is the raw truth. It is impossible to know that you like until you figure out what you don't like. And the only way to test and feel and try things out and know, is actually doing it. This is half the reason for internships. You get to test out an industry and decide if you like it enough to either go to grad school in that area, or take a full time job in that area.
I went to grad school right after uni and i regret it. I thought I liked research based traffic engineering, but I don't like research. I should have went into the job force right away, worked for 3-4 years, decided what I wanted to do based on that experience, and then go for something. I know now that I should have gotten an MBA because I'm more business and leadership minded than technically proficient. But could I have seen that at 22? At 24? No it wasn't until I started working and immediately I knew I had decided with no context and no experience.
I get comments like this often. And it is usually someone 12-16 and maybe even up to 18/19 attempting to make all their education, career, and therefore life decisions ahead of time, which should be avoided.
The other reality that gets missed is that it almost doesn't matter what you do. A master's doesn't really help you get into other lanes in your career, it just deepens your proficiency at that time. It MIGHT help you get a position over someone else. But if someone has only a BS and you have a MS, but they have the experience and a portfolio or know someone and you don't have those things, truly the degrees matters less than most other things.
PhDs don't help you at all unless you want to be a professor or be in the research arena for something incredibly complex or dangerous, like bridges or nuclear, or maybe AI, etc.

I recently figured that coursework gives me ideas that are only enough to guide me to more useful internship/research experiences, which will give me a larger understanding in what I'm interested in *doing* rather than thinking about.
But what about dreams? How do I find experiences that will let me explore stuff I dream of doing with my expertise (even if they're just personal projects)?
For example, I dream of making wild things like a mind-controlled Siri or hands-free pen. How do I find related, guiding experiences when there's nothing in my coursework that feels practically connected to what I want to do?
Here's another thing I really, really want to know. I know the things I mentioned above are multidisciplinary projects. Say I get to experience an engineering part of a big project and I like the project itself, but not the part I played in it. I want to try contributing to this project in an unrelated discipline, like programming. However, my programming skills are much more lacking compared to the engineering skills that originally brought me to the project. How can I practically compensate for the difference in skillsets so I can explore opportunities with programming?
I understand learning enough to gain experience in something may vary greatly by what you're learning. But seeing as chasing coursework as a primary means of discovering hands-on interests isn't at all feasible, what are your thoughts?

@@JakeVoorhees I suppose one thing that would be great to give further insight into their future careers is how students can collaborate with companies on college projects (such as their thesis). This would give students a great deal of experience with incurring costs for the company :)
Reach out to companies and offer that opportunity, and ask what they may like to see in order this this to be a win-win arrangement, and they will tell you

Where and at what type of companies do electrical engineers specializing in power typically work? Can they find jobs in almost any city in the US?
Currently going to college to become a electrical engineer, I had not much information about what I was getting myself into but want to work for a hydro power plant (turbine power) since it pays very well.
My goal is renewable energy engineering, in the power sector as an EE…with a fascination to learn more about electricity & energy. I was a very naive 18yr old who was pressured into college without the slightest clue of what my academic/career goals were. As a 24yr old whose resolve was chewed up and spit out countless times, I’m very excited to return with a clear head and firm ambitions.

Being a final year electrical and electronics engineering student (an integrated program). Here's my some of views.....
1) I won't classify computer engineering as sub domain of electrical or vis versa. Both are different in their own field.
Although I will put the mutual topics of both engineering under electronic domain (Digital electronics).
2) Signal and Control are the toughest subjects in entire enginnering program, due to it's vigorous math orientation.
3) Communication is most boring and dull but the same it's interesting also. Here you will find direct application of electromagnetism. If you love physics, then you will definately enjoy some part. (I have mixed feelings for particular).
4) Electronic is really huge field, ranging from vlsi to micro&nano. ( As earlier mentioned, it's integration of non core electrical and computer science)
5) Power engineering is core electrical. In which electric machine was least intrested subject I found.
6) power electronics, the rapidly emerging field due to demand of solar energy and EVs. You'll find tast of power, electronic and Control engineering.

Yeah I did a civil engineering drafting internship after sophomore year over summer, then undergraduate research over junior year winter and summer, research again after junior year during summer, then senior year fall I graded for a courses, and also had a winter internship with the federal highway administration :) I did a lot

Hey good question, so here's' the raw difference. Biomedical engineering is a tiny field compared to EE. There are 328,000 EEs employed in America right now and only 19,000 BMEs. Plus, you can end up working as a BME with an EE degree. You could just do internships, tech electives, academic research, network with BMEs, and join BME societies/clubs/organizations and get into BME with the better degree with more options. Hi Jake, I’m interested in making a difference via working in renewable energy as an engineer. Could you explain the difference in what electrical vs mechanical engineers do in renewable energy? What actually do electrical engineers do in renewables?
EE works a lot in power regulation and transmission. How to maintain and protect a grid so it doesn't fail to spikes and environment, how to regulate voltage etc, what to do when user end is dumping power back into the grid etc.
In terms of generation, it depends on the type. For example, solar, since you are working with so much semiconductors, it's going to be more of EE/chemical side. Hydro, thermal and wind would be more Mech, civil with EE as support. and for nuclear, that's physics + EE with mech and civil working on surrounding systems.

@Thawne i mean... most grid level generators are AC. So usually you are dealing with transforms rather than caps. And of course there are also fuse and circuit breakers and other voltage and current monitoring systems. So I guess if someone try really hard enough they can mess with a system, but they have to really try.
@Thawne yeah, things like that. I work on low-mid voltage devices so i am not as well verse in grid level stuff, but generally, we try to design so that worst case scenario is controllable.
Hi I just registered for a electrical engineering major at the ETH Zurich. I‘m extremely interested in renewable energies, AI, VR, electrical cars and totally fascinated by the worlds created in video games.
I still have chance to change my major to mechanical engineering and I am just not sure which one I like more. When do know exactly which of the two is the correct major for you?
they are so similar, but different enough. not as similar as electrical vs computer. mechanical is more for people who want to work on the actual physical parts of things. The design and testing and everything for those. Electrical engineers may use those same parts, but are moreso designing and working with either the power, control, instrumentation, magnetism, etc type of stuff within an engineering environment. you cant really go wrong either, so dont worry. EEs can work in and learn an ME role, and vice versa
I can’t pick between the two either, there seems to be not much aid online about helping you pick a field of engineering. I’m leaning towards electrical but have always loved cars and the like. I would assume electrical would apply to more fields just because of how tech dependent things are nowadays
I knew I didn't like mechanical engineering when I took physics 1 (mechanical engineering focus) in my first year. I loved physics 2 (electrical engineering focus) so I knew I was in the right path. Hopefully, physics is similar at your school as well and you find the best for you.

I just finished my second year of EE and I feel like I've done nothing. I only learned some basics of circuits and physics. My counselors are pushing me to get an internship, but most internships I see ask for experience. I have no prior experience at all so I don't think any internships will accept me. I'm so lost.

I currently go to tech college and I study mechatronics there. I really like the whole mechatronic area, but there is nothing I like more than Electricity and Electronics (here in Brazil we consider these two as Electroelectronics). I really don't know if I should go for Control and Automation Eng or Electrical Eng, as here *jobwise* the first option isn't really recognized, but the second one is, although, literally anywhere else, Control and Automation Engineering is a great option with lots of job offers (keep in mind that in order for me work abroad, I would need experience), which one do you recommend?
As a recent grad, I ran into the exact same problem when I got into college. I would suggest going into EE and then taking an automation/robotics minor if it's offered as it gives you more path to go into when you get into industry. EE courses do teach control and feedback systems, however, they don't do much coding and robotics. Doing an EE major with a Control/automation master also works too,
Doing a robotics minor, which I did, means you had taken classes that are related to the topics. However I must warn you to take when you are an Electrical Engineer, you are going to end up designing the background system for the robot, like the power system, communication circuit, driver and processing circuit for motors and sensors, etc. The control system would usually be designed by CS/CE.
My suggested rule of thumb is don't pick a major that sounds highly specialized or sounds like it's a combination of multiple majors i.e. mechatronics. The former limits the jobs you can do in industry and the latter just makes you decent at multiple topics but not good in any particular one that makes you slightly less competitive. So pretty much just pick the big 5 and branch out from there. The only exception I would say is Biomed, since it teach you biology and that gives you a different edge that the big 5s just don't have

@@bodohbengap2592 Hey thanks for the comment. I think art students and engineering students have fundamentally different skillsets and interests and therefore, most likely should not cross over into one another’s industry often.
However, there is the potential that someone ended up on the wrong path due to outside misdirection and unawareness and lack of education of how to choose a career path or major.
With that being said, maybe some art students should have majored in engineering. These students need to be absolutely good enough at math and have some level of spacial and or theoretical thinking.
Also, there are some crossover careers with art and engineering - architecture being the best example. Architects need to be good enough at math and the logical and quantitative side of design, be also be able to creatively integrate design into the buildings surroundings, focus on aesthetic, etc.

Computer Engineering is actually a subset of Electronics Engineering which is within Electrical Engineering. Electrical Engineering itself is the more broad major. Many programs offer them together as “Electrical & Computer Engineering” and it's not possible to achieve an isolated CPE degree.

Electrical Engineering includes things like power, telecommunications, signals & controls, and electronics, and computer engineering.
.
Computer engineering concentrates more on programming and how the hardware and software are made built to work together. On the other hand, Electronic Engineering concentrates more on circuits, loops, communication, wireless connections, etc.
.
Both of these branches will study the same fundamentals but Electrical Engineering tends to focus on power generation and distribution while Computer engineering will specialize in computer systems. In other words, software-controlled hardware and its interconnections.

Computer Engineering does more software related work; such as code development. On the other hand, Electronic Engineering does more hardware related work; such as working on a computer modern board, circuits, wiring, and alike.

My dream job is to work on airplanes, to have something to do with them, flying them, designing them, fixing them, welcoming people onto them, cleaning them, fitting them with electronics, anything really!! I've always been enchanted by planes and flying. I am currently swayed to nanoelectronics and nanophotonics. It seems clewr photons offer advantages that make them necessary for quantum computers. But my knowledge is limited. We shall see. And yes, because Compeng and EE are so similar, some universities said fuck it, and just have an ECE major for undergrad, such as Oregon State University. But either eay, as you said, you can always double major and merely add 1 to 4 classes. Usually.

There are only 28 ABET mechatronics engineering programs in the world and just 3 in the USA. So oftentimes you have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is a great path. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. You would do that by for example, majoring in EE and taking more electronics courses and less about power or telecommunications. You would take robotics electives, signals and controls, and circuits courses, etc. Your CS related courses should revolve around mechatronics rather than something else, and so on.
