This is crazy! I just did a research paper about this topic a week ago! But yeah I’m working on a indie game that is a Skyrim-like or Bethesda-like for years. I’m the sole developer on my project, I’m hoping once I’m done my education at TFS I will be able to work more on my game. My plan is to make a virtual slice by the end of 2025
Interesting concept. I disagree with your definition of Skyrim-like, though. For example, roguelikes are not all dungeon crawlers. They don’t have every single defining aspect of the game, just the most notable ones, thus being like the aforementioned game, and not identical. Soulslikes is another example of a genre which takes a few defining traits and makes something which is supposed to be similar enough, while innovating or refining. I do think that both of those genres are too broad currently, but in general they represent the idea of the genres being similar to the original game, not identical. That said, although everything you mentioned about Skyrim is an outstanding quality that makes Skyrim good, I wouldn’t say they are all defining qualities. For instance, since the perspective is switchable from 1st person to 3rd, it probably isn’t that important to the identity of the game. I usually play Skyrim in third person perspective unless I’m in a dungeon. Although the perspective contributes to the feel of the game, I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to be a Skyrim-like. The scale and density of Skyrim is probably more likely what’s preventing us from having an indie Skyrim-like. As those things take a lot of time (and money) to implement. Not having those things makes exploration less possible and fun to partake in. Regardless of my opinion on this, this was a really interesting video! Thank you for making it, it was thoughtful and thought-provoking!
Thank you, glad you appreciate it :) You're right about perspective, I also switch between first and third person depending on what I'm doing in the game. I also agree that you don't need every part and especially that every part doesn't have to be exactly like skyrim. It's more like a fuzzy blob where the further out you get the less it gives that Skyrim feeling. I think Soulslikes are a bit wider in concept because they are mainly about mastering difficult combat, and you can for example have wildly different settings. But an open world RPG that is overly grim and dark for example will fail to evoke the same feeling of running around in Skyrim. Or in other words, if Skyrim-like just means "fantasy open world RPG" then it's not a very useful term.
Played a bit of it and so far so good, but it is early access so possibly needs more work later on in the campaign, so will be waiting for full release to play properly
I don't think so - I really liked Kingdom Come but for different reasons. To me, skyrim-like is a pretty narrow definition, it is not meant to cast any games not falling into it in negative light.

Would love to see it - both the paper and the game! Feel free to DM on Discord or something if you're not comfortable sharing publically.
@ Everything other than the GDD I wouldn’t have any issues with sharing bit yeah I’m down for a discord call sometime :)

Well Avowed comes out soon and it looks very Skyrim like. Made by Obsidian so I’m excited for it to come out
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Currently in development.
Oh I didn't know about this, will download the demo :) (I'm sure there are more games I have missed!)

Most of the fantasy rpg's that I've seen in the last year have no extensive mod support. Why? I'm not sure.
Making a good modding framework is hard :)
There are. Kingdom Come Deliverance is very much a skyrim-like. This video is a cope.

@tides-of-revival bruh you can disagree but the majority of people know kcd is a skyrim-like. Cope.
@@justinstrong9595kcg has only sold 8 million copies to be a Skyrim-like you need to sell 10 million or more,. Cope
@@justinstrong9595 Yeah but KCD has a set player character. Making your own character is definitely a requirement for a skyrim-like.
