It depends on how many RAM does your system use. Usually Win 11 needs about 4-5GB at stock (if no background apps are working). With active background apps it can easily go up to 6-8GB and even more. So in this case you definitely need 32GB to play games w/o any issues.
On the other hand, optimized Win with disabled unnecessary functions (like telemetry, auto updates etc.) the system itself uses just about 2GB of RAM. So in this case 16GB if RAM is enough for 99% of modern games, since most games need just about 5-10GB of RAM, if we are talking about real usage (not allocation).

The problem that I have with this test is that you have 32gb in dual channel. But you are running the 16 gb in single channel. That could explain the differences in the 1% lows

RAM is not just quantity. It's a mix between the CPU cache quantity, the quantity of ram, the type of memory (DDR3, DDR4, DDR5) and platform, and speed timmings of it. I've noticed a few games that were having some slight micro stutterings with 16GB DDR4 3600mhz CL18, and my 5600x, but when i got my 5700x3d with more cache (and my memory finaly works at CL16-16-16), that stuttering is all gone in all games i've tested. So it's not just quantity... for example if you go from a 16gb 3600CL16-16-16 to a 32gb 18-19-19 with a 5600x, you are probably having less performance, not an upgrade...

  • @MirelRC

    My short answer: No.
    My long answer:
It depends on what you do, what games you play, and what software you use.
For older AAA games, some eSports titles, and some well-optimized new AAA games, 16 GB is still enough.
An example of a poor optimized game that becomes unplayable with 16GB RAM is Warzone 2.0.
But at the price, 32GB is selling, it is dumb af to build with only 16GB.

Not really. More like they are just having too many high quality assets, or way too many complex simulations. And you probably can reduce quality settings to reduce memory usage and complain how terrible the assets look like now compared to best assets game has. Memory usage is mostly about storing things in memory that are needed soon so that game doesn't have to wait it to come from a disk to be shown. Of course it's really POSSIBLE to waste memory without asset quality or size of world stored in memory be the reason, but those kind of mistakes are something people probably learn to avoid easily, and they would more likely waste MEGABYTES of memory instead of Gigabytes.
But once had someone put an enormous image for small picture in a school mobile game project and my phone always crashed because memory usage, but I used some debugger memory viewer to find the reason, and told him to fix tReal thing is that he size of image to not spend hundred megabytes or something for asset that only needed few kilobytes. So that was extreme example of too high quality asset for the use case and that kind of mistakes are caught by people looking into it. But actual real mistakes like that can be found and fixed, and people learn quickly about that.
The real issue is that you will get a game that's made to work with 16GB of ram on console with console disk and decompressing engine. PC needs more RAM than console for things that console doesn't have to do, that pushes the game slightly over console limit, and because PC:s load assets slower, it needs to have more assets in memory to have same experience. You are just getting a well developed game that's made for other system, that your system would need a bit more RAM to match experience.
Anyway RAM is cheap on overall PC budget. And my rule of thumb is get double what your largest program uses so that you don't need to manage it manually with different programs so you don't need to manage it manually closing and opening programs.

I'm super inefficient in how I use my PC. I don't close my browser tabs and I leave discord on in the background. I also know that Windows is a bloated OS and there could be background processes going on like virus scans and updates. DDR4 these days is cheap so I went with a 32GB 3600 GSkill kit. If anything, the only regret I have is not going 64GB originally when I did my build last year.

Hey man, I’m really confused whether to get one of two different laptops. I will list the specs below and I’d really appreciate it if you can give me your opinion on which I should get:
    Zephyrus g14:
    14” display.
    OLED 3K 120 Hz
    Ryzen 9 8945HS
    32 GB RAM
    GeForce RTX 4070
    1 TB SSD
    Zephyrus G16:
    16” display.
    OLED 2.5K 240 Hz
    Intel Core Ultra 9
    16 GB RAM
    GeForce RTX 4070
    1 TB SSD
Please keep in mind that the ram in these laptops is soldered in so I don’t have the option to upgrade it later on.
What I really want is the G16. I really want the larger display (since it’ll be the only display I’ll have) and the dark grey color it comes in (unlike the g14 which only comes in a white color). It also has a higher refresh rate, and a better CPU. Everything about it is better…except for the ram.
I’m worried that I’ll face problems with the RAM in the long run since I’m planning on keeping this laptop for atleast 5 years.
I’m getting this for some gaming (mainly games such as COD, GTA, and some others) in addition to school work (which won’t be demanding). I like everything about the G16 more except for obviously the ram. Do you think this difference in ram is worth me choosing the g14 instead?

I don't understand, I do Sim Racing in VR on AMS 2, And my older Motherboard a Gigabyte H610i I had 16gb of DDR4 and when I had a full track of cars, The stuttering was bad, So I put another 16gb to make the 32gb, And guess what stutters stopped, I just upgraded my Motherboard to a MSI Z690 DDR5, I was on the fence about DDR5 at first, But damn DDR5 is actually better than DDR4 in a noticeable way with VR, I thought I was going mad, lol, But no the colors using the MSI Z690 with DDR5 have woke my i5 12600k right up, My Sim Racing in VR is better using the MSI Z690 to when I was using the Gigabyte H610i motherboard, So yes better motherboard with DDR5 ram is going to give you better sim racing experience, I only do simulation games, lol, The only arcadie game I do play is IL2-Sturmovic, Fantastic World War 2 flying game by the way, Brilliant in VR, But I think you do need a flight stick to experience Flying games, Like I use a T300 GT-RD wheel, Fantastic steering wheel the T300 is, Comes up as a T500 by the way, lol...
But yeah 32gb of ram makes that much difference to me, I am waiting for another 16gb to be delivered from Amazon, Oh yeah i got a MSI Z690 Unify motherboard for 160 pounds the other week, Back to school sales, 160 pounds for a Z690 from MSI, Is a fantastic deal, Like I said the i5 12600k actually feels like the CPU has properly woken up, lol, I have not benchmarked my PC yet, But an i5 12600k on a MSI Z690, With the 12gb 3060 makes for a pretty decent Sim Racing PC, And I can get 70-75fps, On my Quest 2, I can't wait to get a Quest 3, I hear the Quest 3 is worlds better than the Quest 2, How true is that, Can anyone tell me how much of a difference the Quest 3 is from the Quest 2, For AMS 2, And simulation titles, I can't do the shoot em games or violent games, As I suffer with Complex PTSD, The blood and violence gives me horrible nightmares and PTSD symptoms, And believe me Complex PTSD is not fun to live with, Because the Complex Part, It doesn't go, The symptoms can always be triggered, Nightmares though have reduced since I done sim racing in VR, So if anyone reading this gets bad nightmares, Try VR before you go to bed, If it helps me have less nightmares then surely it can do the same for others, I loves VR, The ability to learn how to do things, Like putting an engine together, Want to do an operation, Fly a plane, VTOL VR is excellent for that, I would even say that if you was to learn how to fly a plane on Microsoft Flight Sim, I bet you could jump in a plane for real and fly it, Some dude in America stole a plane from learning to fly with simulation, Hew ended up crashing the plane though, But I think he wanted to crash it, If I remember right, So yeah I think using VR you could learn a lot of skills......
Yeah I had to get another 16gb for the MSI Z690 motherboard, And I do think that 32gb is not only future proofing as games are using more and more ram ever time a game is released, I think even updates in games can make the ram be used up at 16gb, bit like the GPU's now, Even the 12gb 3060 I bought only about a year ago, Is starting to show age, Next I will have to get a 16gb GPU, I want a 4070ti, And I did read there is a new 4070 coming out when the 50 series drops, So I read, I am waiting until the 50 series comes out, Until I get a new GPU....
Or try grab one in black Friday sales, I am getting iRacing when the black Friday sales drop, I was told I can get 12 months iRacing for a lot cheaper during the Black Friday, So I will wait, For now I got AMS 2, And AMS 2 in VR is flipping amazing....
But yeah I think 32gb is the new sweet spot for gaming, lol....
Do you do Sim racing as well as Flight simulation, I can picture you being a Euro Truck 2 driver, lol, Am I right, lol, ETS 2 is fantastic for a relaxing Sunday drive in a lorry, And having the amount of Countries Euro Truck 2 got, Is pretty bad ass, Same as MFS, All the Airports and ect, Is pretty staggering considering how much the simulation games have got bigger in such a small amount of time, Imagine what gaming will be like in another 10 years, We will have the Room on the Enterprise starship, Holographic graphics, Do people think that holographic room will ever be a thing?, lol......
But yeah 32gb is what a PC really needs to run without stuttering, Plain and simples, lol......
