Thanks for mentioning it because I was thinking to do the same upgrade of CPU's. Since a 4080 makes the fps differences bigger, I doubt it'll be beneficial for me with a 6700XT.
I was convinced a 5800X3D would give a massive boost but that doesn't seem to be the case overall.

@@Yoda300YearsAgo I just went from an i7-9700 to a 7800x3d and think it was 100% worth it. A lot of games were pushing my 9700 to 100% even at 4k and having micro stutters, so much smoother now. Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden Ring for example run WAY better at 4k now.

@@davidnott_ 100% this. Thanks for making videos with real settings people will actually play at. Nobody cares about the difference between 500fps vs 600fps at 1080p minimum settings, it's literally worthless data. The 80fps vs 70fps on ultra maxed settings with RT are where people will actually try and play. If that means the diff between a $100 CPU vs a $300 CPU are negligible, that's still far more useful than the meaningless numbers other channels put out.

If you care about RT (I do and had the 5600X), I really recommend getting a 5700X3D. It's a difference between constant annoying drops to below 60 and a very, very silky smooth experience.
I had my 5600X for years, got a 4090 last year, recently got a 5700X3D because the experience was disappointing (even at 4K). In games like: Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, Dragon's Dogma 2, Ghostwire Tokyo, Spiderman, Watch Dogs Legion, Hogwarts Legacy, even non RT, but infamously demanding games from the recent past like Deus Ex Mankind Divided and Dishonored 2; the difference is night and day.

This is where to look at if you wanna see if something is running smoothly.

Ultimately I decided to go with a 5600x and throw the extra cash to a better video card to replace my AMD 580. This video showed me it would be nice to have the extra power of a 5800x3D, but the much cheaper 5600x gets me most of the way there in the 1440 60Hz or 4K 60Hz my monitor and TV operate it. I wanted to be sure I had the least possible bottleneck for my new RX 7800 XT. My 5600x will go into a secondary rig. And my third rig has an R5 5500GT CPU. AM4 is not dead. 5700X3D/5800X3D rivals AM5 R5 7600x and R7 7700X for gaming performance specifically. For AM5 you need to go for 7800X3D to really beat the 5700X3D/5800X3D by a good margin (for gaming). Best case scenario 30% better performance.

    Went from a
5800x to a 5800x3d and for a bunch of games I play that are more CPU heavy, yes it made a huge difference. Non 3d CPUs struggle with some games like crazy. So it's dependant on what you play. Hell let loose went from 70 fps and bad 1% lows to tops of 150 fps and smooth game play. On a 3080 10 gb, same with cyber punk on 1440p at pretty much max settings in both games

Good test, 5600x or 5800x/5900x/5950x with tuned bdie ram will come to spitting distance within 5800x3d. 5800x3d is great for people who dont tune their systems but imo 5900x or 5950x with tuned bdie is much better option than 5800x3d, 5600x is a bit low on core count, some games do like to have 8 cores these days

    • @starstreamgamer3704

True. And not only with B-dies. Well tuned E-dies are not that much slower, as well as modern RAM with 3600MHz/CL16 XMP (based on Hynix D-die, for example). Most of these kits can easily achieve 3800MHz/CL16.
Plus, with non-3D CPUs you can use Curve Optimizer and raise core clock by 200MHz, which brings another 2-3% bump.

People should not forget the cheaper 5700X3D option as well. There is also 5600X3D, but that cpu is a rare one. But if 5600X3D was actually easy to get, i think that cpu could be an incredable cpu for gaming. NOt as fast af 5700X3D/5800X3D. But that 3D cashe does matter in games alone.

I'm really pleased I stumbled across this video. I finally got enough spare cash to go an buy a 5800x3d to replace my 5600X...the week they discontinued it and everybody had - of course - sold out. So I was pretty cheesed off. So I went looking for 5700x3d v 5600X reviews and found your videos. It would seem that my fixation on getting a 5800 was misplaced and I would be far better upgrading my GPU from a 6650XT (I knew I would need to do that anyway to be honest). I mainly play iRacing, in 1080p on a single monitor. I think I may be better looking at some variant of the 4070. Any thoughts?

In theory, and in numbers, it doesnt make a lot of diference, but in real world feeling it does make a diference going 8 cores with a lot of cache (5700x3d, 5800x3d). I can say this because i've upgraded from a 5600 to a 5700x3d due to a second-hand deal, and i'm realy happy. Cyberpunk is night and day, the last of us aswell. Not sure if it's the extra 2cores/4threads or the extra cache, but i'm realy happy with my € 70 extra investment (from selling one and buying other second hand).

    I switched from a 5600X to a 5700X3D, I have a 4090 driving a 4K display
It's a massive difference in terms of how smooth the game runs, particularly games with ray tracing, the frame times are much more stable and in some games gpu usage has went from 50-70% to a stable 90+%. Cyberpunk, Ghostwire Tokyo, Witcher 3, Spiderman all lost the jarring frame time spikes that I had with the 5600X.
You can see it's the same story with the 4080 Super in your test, a 1% low of 57 vs 72 is honestly a massive difference. a drop to sub 60 from an average of 80ish is quite bad.

i'm always curious as to the decision to include titles like "starfield" and "gray zone warfare" in a test like this, as both seem to be relatively unoptimized - especially in regards to cpu performance. it almost feels like you are testing the game's performance more than the performance of the cpu in-game, if that makes any sense. i know starfield has received some updates to help with this, but it still seems like typical "bethesda optimization." games like fh5, cs2, & cp2077 make more sense to me since they tend to utilize given resources in a more predictable - and often consistently scalable - manor. other than showing real-world application for sake of user expectation, is there any benefit in a cpu test to use those two specific games, or am i missing something (which is absolutely possible)?

There is roughly 5% difference between the i5 and the i7 no difference in gaming , the extra 2 cores of the i7 could come handy in multi tasking.

Some odd comments here. People saying it's 'not worth it' to upgrade the cpu are missing the point. If you're dropping $1000 on a GPU, you want to get the most out of it, and by pairing a 4080 super with a 5600x you're absolutely leaving GPU performance on the table as this video shows. If you have a 5600x you'd be better off either waiting until you can upgrade the CPU or saving some money and getting a 4070 super instead.

On 4K if the goal is 60 Hz, then CPU does not matter, everything is determined by GPU. If one wants to go higher, then there might be a difference.

@@angeldust1732 I have been able to run all the games on Game pass above 60 FPS with maxed settings. I mostly play Fortnite @ 165 FPS to match my monitor refresh rate and it runs smoother than ever with high 1 percent lows. My monitor is 1440P but you can get much higher frame rates at 1080p, which I do from time to time. I would say the performance is outstanding . I upgraded from the Ryzen 5 3600 and seen a 80 percent increase in framerate @ 1080P in fortnite.

If a 5600X did not bottleneck high end GPUs how is it a 5600X3D gets massively better fps on the same GPUs? Lol, kind of obvious.

This is a loaded question because it’s game dependent. The better a game leverages the available CPU cores. iRacing is a prime example of poor CPU optimization. Even a 14900KS will bottleneck a 4080S in iRacing.

I have the same processor and GPU as you and was thinking if it was worthwhile to upgrade tho at 4K, doesn't seem like I'll be missing much except in a handful of games, but still considering to do it as I do plan to upgrade to the 5080 when that comes out eventually.

@@Stuala-gj2bg no I haven't upgraded yet, I'm waiting for the new ryzen generation. Other than cyberpunk, I haven't had an issue with the 5600x, it performs well in other games. Next time do a chart at the end and draw conclusions, like an engineer, where you answer the gdamn question that got me to click your video. Im not going to sit through a 25 minute video like i have nothing to do. Also, leaving "performance on the table" =/= bottleneck. That is measured differently and you haven't said a word about it.
