  • Domantas Sabonis is having an All-NBA caliber season and propelling the Sacramento Kings to elite offensive status, largely because of his sensational playmaking at the center position. Should more teams be looking to add playmaking bigs as the NBA continues to evolve? Let's dive into it.

Sabonis is FAR BETTER than I ever thought he was. He can score 30 if he wants to anytime. But he is more interested in rebounding, passing and setting up his teammates. Overall, he is a great great player and he even has improved his defensive presence and unlocked Fox's potential. The Kings are judt beginning. Fox and Sabonis havent even played one full season together yet but their chemistry was noticeable last year even in the first game. The Kings were awful gor 16 years but this Kings team shares parallels to the team that was really good in 2002. They may need one more big piece and one or two small pieces but you can see the foundation for many years of future success. Monte McNair has assembled a team with key players mostly in their mid twenties. Their primes arent even here yet. The future is bright.

As a Lithuanian I'm biased towards the subject of the video, but the simple editing style and analysis was great as well and forced me to subscribe. Domas has always been a great PnR player and a great offensive rebounder/post player but you rightly pointed out that Mike Brown comes from a system that maximized the handoff game in GS, and its clear that he both fits and unlocks that system perfectly (I know he did it in Indy, but the pieces in SAC are so much better suited for it and he's gotten better at it).
Its always a bit amusing to see people calling him a lesser Jokic as Arvydas was in many ways Jokic before Jokic (I wish we got to see that version in the NBA before the USSR crippled him), but he has truly made the most of his physical gifts and keeps refining his game and adding new wrinkles season after season. Hopefully that 3 pointer gets even more consistent and maybe we get some Sombor Shuffle-esque shooting off the dribble at some point.

Its both sabonis passing skill as well as the system. Mike brown is the brain behind this new offense. He took it from steve kerr during his years as warriors assistant coach. Basically, he's using sabonis like kerr uses green. Run a ton of DHO for steph and klay, 2 very elite perimeter shooters who are always running around the floor off ball. Sabonis is running a ton of DHO for kevin, a pseudo splash bro that also loves to run around and knock down perimeter shots at an elite level. I would love to see sabonis run with prime steph and klay. That offense would be absolutely wildly effective.

Then there's Sabonis, Markkanen and Porzingis playing very well. Younger guys like Mobley, Claxton and Paolo (if you're being a little generous with your definition of big man) showing huge promise, and Victor coming in next season. I'd argue rather that Nikola Jokic was who changed the game and showed what was possible with a playmaking big, opening the door for guys like Domas and Bam Adebayo (to a lesser degree as this year his assists are way down). A lot of the Kings' actions are basically like a blend of Warriors and Nuggets actions. Lots of DHO stuff, lots of cutting and movement. But really the reason I go to Jokic is because basically since his rise as an elite player teams have adopted a ton of DHO actions. The Warriors probably also deserve a lot of credit here, but I suspect until Denver started doing it teams felt like the Warriors were somewhat of a one-off, hard to imitate.

Nobody is changing the game. I hate it when people say that. People act like we have never seen something before.

He's good but not as good as Jokic. If he can carry the Kings past the playoff first round or even the WCF, he'll get more respect.
