Something I've really hated seeing in the comments is "this is back when music was about talent, not looks", you're saying she's ugly wrapped in the compliment of saying she's talented. I think she's brilliant and beautiful. Just because Patti Smith doesn't fit some cookie cutter mold doesn't make her not beautiful. it's possible to appreciate someone's talent without commenting on their appearance, just FYI since you didn't know.
@ Kelsey Feagle Such a distorted view. Try not to project you own inner feelings into others words and twist them into your own commentary. One of the problems with today's society. So many people LOOKING for something to be mad about so they just conjure it up. The comment had NOTHING to do with Patti's looks. What is wrong with Patti's looks? The comment was about the glitz sold for talent in today's world.
I think the comment means that the music industry was less focused on looks. Exposure and airtime were less based on what the industry decided was "hot", which doesn't relate to what actually is beautiful. That being said, I'm not sure if it's actually true because the industry was pretty focused on looks back then aswell.

The first time I heard this song was on my car radio and I was headed for the record store. I damn near drove off the road I was so blown away. Needless to say I bought the LP immediately. Got it autographed by Patti when she came to town a couple months later.

This song never dated at all. Takes me way back and is timeless. Patti is just sublime and herself. Great artist. True to herself and the music. Always was.
First saw Patti & the Ramones in 1976 I believe unreal!!! Hard to put into words but it changed me big time Patti Smith is a legend what an unbelievable talent so happy to have seen her when we were both young...
I have come here because my life is without aim and I feel like listening to this Patti Smith’s song, which is the only song that I know about her works. Thank you.
Absolutely the best version ... Patti Smith is such brilliant / divine songwriter and performer ... as a guitarist one can only dream of performing with such artists, as it gives the music performance it's 5th Dimension 👍 🎶
Patti didn’t write this song. Bruce Springsteen wrote it. She may be a talented song writer but her must popular songs have all either been entirely written by someone else or co written with someone else. This may be because Patti has a real issue with trying too “sound deep” I.e poetry in song but sometimes it doesn’t translate into song vs working as a poem
Growing up listening to music of my time the mid-sixties the 70s 80s and on up this woman and her band but not given enough credit they were very underrated and very good.

The year was 1978. My friend and I were due to appear at a gay club in Manchester when I heard this for the first time. Ask me nicely, I can probably tell you what time it was. The hallmark of a great song is you can recall, the time, date and place you first heard it. And how it made you feel.
The first time I heard this song was on the jukebox at a bar in the Bronx ('78?) with a bunch of Manhattan College students. I was visiting from Delaware and had never heard the song but it was obviously already popular in NYC because when it came on the whole bar started singing and punching the air every time they heard the lyric "because the night". Hi Maria, how are you doing today?
Because the Night - Patti Smith Group
Take me now, baby, here as I am
Pull me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hands
Take my hand come undercover
They can't hurt you now
Can't hurt you now, can't hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Have I doubt when I'm alone
Love is a ring, the telephone
Love is an angel disguised as lust
Here in our bed until the morning comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand as the sun descends
They can't touch you now
Can't touch you now, can't touch you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
With love we sleep
With doubt the vicious circle
Turn and burns
Without you I cannot live
Forgive, the yearning burning
I believe it's time, too real to feel
So touch me now, touch me now, touch me now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because tonight there are two lovers
If we believe in the night we trust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to us
