  • When I heard it had snowed a lot in the highlands I thought it would be a great opportunity to try out my hammock and practise some bushcraft in cold conditions. Here is a wee video from the trip where temperatures went down below -10C (14F). Hope you enjoy it.

I stumbled onto your videos yesterday and really enjoy them. Here's a tip from a retired US service member who spent more than my share of time suffering upstate NY (as well as some very cold nights in the heart of the Hindu Kush) winters with all the cold and lake effect snows. Put your boots and clothes the bottom of your sleeping bag. If you have extreme cold weather bags with multiple sacks the boots just need to be in one of them. Your jacket makes a nice pillow and everything is warm when you get up for the day. It's important to sleep in your base layer so you have something to put on after you get out of your bag.
And no, as an infantryman we never used tents or had a stove or fire of any kind. A week or two of that in Temps around 0F it will teach you quick to use all the tricks you're taught and to appreciate a good fire. Haha.
    Keep ejoying nature brother.

It's a good thing to see someone that returns their camp site back to "how they found it". I camp often in a "minimalist style" and almost always find myself not only carrying out my trash, but two to three Walmart bags of trash left by others.

I love that you used your canteen as a hot water bottle. Boy, have I been laughed at for doing that, but it sure did add a lot of comfort on a few occasions especially if you or your kit have become damp or chilled.

I used do a bit of winter camping in the Adirondacks and in the Laurentians and the best time was when a bunch of us made a snow cave by bending over and lashing down some small pine trees and then covering the shelter with a lot of snow. Two nights spent in -15C or more but so warm inside with a small fire that we could sit around in T-shirts. One of my friends brought one of those folding reflector things that people used to use to tan their faces with and placed behind the fire it really made a difference. In Scotland though you don't have to worry about raccoons or bears stealing your boots to gnaw on them for the salt content.

You probably know this but always check wind chill. The temp might be -10 but that could be -14 in a light breeze. Be extra careful in the cold bud, you only get one set of fingers. Wee tip for a happy camper in the cold is take 2 pairs of gloves. Rotate them as they get wet, one pair on one pair over the fire. Sounds like over kill but you can't beat putting hot gloves on in the cold. For an extra morale boost do the same with socks for bed, trust me the pack space is worth it when it's been a long cold day. It's a sure instant smile.

Find 2 hot rocks for your boots and put them at foot end of bag to pre heat bag the reheat rocks the sleep also use reflection to your advantage one behind fire, one below bag, on your netting figure angles don't trap moisture add thin poly drop in front and sides! All this will not add 2lbs to load you use less wood & sleep warmer also pre before sleep add keep pre bottle inside its 98 and will also to heat! Just some TTP's from an old-timer?!

    • @MrEmiosk

It does offer that particular perk. Though the biggest pro's are that you can use the hammock as a seat, it helps a lot for people with bad backs and knees not needing to crawl in and out of tents, and it is particularly light so its easier to take with you. Though you have to really think about how you set it up to conserve heat in windy and cold situations, and it can usually not fit more than one person.
