  • My buddy suggested we go on a hike. So i thought it would be good to experience the wet and cold December weather in the Highlander clothing while still being safe.
Hope you enjoy it and always respect the mountain weather.

    Great Videos.
I've been up Ben Nevis twice back in the "80's. Both times with a Highlander who insisted on wearing traditional Clothing. The Great Kilt is impressive and it kept us warm in our Summer Ascent. For the Winter Ascent we added a couple of Great Cloaks. Now that worked out well.
Our one bit of modern Kit was a Svea 123R. (I still have it.) That was worth it's weight in Gold to us and still is to me.

When we did Ben Nevis there was a big storm the night before, as we were walking up we met two Germans in full traditional old school gear coming down they had been up there for the night wearing woolen shorts little leather boots linen shirts wool waistcoats & blanket bed rolls, with small water flasks.
I remember me & my Dad thinking wow they must be double hard bastards or just very stupid or both?

Having watched some of our other videos it is very interesting (for a sassenach) to see how useful and versatile the plaid is. Whilst we do have modern synthetic materials there is one serious advantage to the plaid being wool. All things wear out. At the end of its life synthetics will only ever be landfill and remain for something close to perpetuity and a blight to nature. At the end o the useful life of the plaid it can be cut down to make smaller garments or items and scraps can be used to keep the wee slimy beasts off one's vegetables and after that put on the compost to rot leaving no trace.

Russian special forces found that for these kind of treks a kilt like set up was better than cold, wet, clingy trousers in winter exercises (source: 'Aquarium' by Viktor Suvorov. It's a good read!).

Cold weather is a challenge but with a little care historic clothing is a match for modern kits.

Honestly, I think whether you get cold or not depends mostly on conditioning and keeping your core warm. When I was growing up for kindergarten-9th grade I went to a private school where the girls had to wear dresses/skirts, and I don't remember my legs ever being cold. We were allowed to wear tights, but I didn't really like them and didn't wear them very much, especially when I was older. So most of the time I had bare legs, and when it was cold I would wear long sleeves, sweaters, jackets, etc. Pretty much as long as my core was warm my whole body was warm.

I think they may have wrapped the great like differently, to hang lower (like a women's maxi skirt) and protect the knees and calves. Stockings or leg wrappings could easily have come up well above the knee, also - I think it may be just mass-manufacturing-based convention that the stockings traditionally worn with kilts nowadays are just-below-knee length.

I remember reading somewhere about Highland regiments wearing kilts in the trenches in WW1. At night when it got really cold, the hem of the kilt tended to freeze and the result was a very painful ring of ice on the lower edge of the kilt, which led to bleeding and sores on the legs. It must have been very (awfie) uncomfortable.

Interesting bit of kit and a nice video what with the beautiful scenery and all. I always enjoy seeing how those who came before us handled life. I’m a solid fan of wool in cold weather too. I’m wondering about your Bonnet, is it different from a beret? It looks somewhat larger giving you more coverage. Thank you for an interesting video and I subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to more videos.

The weather that you mentioned reminds me much of (if not exactly), the weather that I am experiencing today (1/1/2019), here in the Mid-West U.S. (Indiana, "Land of the Indians"),... It is much the same, until January, through February, when we can at times experience sub zero, freezing weather, with at times, a very heavy snow falls that make driving nearly impossible for some folk to manage...
People are the same, world wide, and we all experience much the same, no matter where we live,.!
An excellent video, and if you are ever in the states (Indiana), look me up, and we can go, and hike in the national, and state forests that we have here,...

Beautiful hiking country you live in even with that harsh weather. I live in tropical region with swampy jungle. Hiking is impossible if not possibly deadly with all the crocs, big lizards, cobras and the occasional passing tiger. Covid-19 made it wilder. In some area a lot of cow herd was decimated by tigers because few people around due to the lockdown.

Ironically, I doubt many "modern" clothing options will give you the freedom of movement over rocks etc that you will get from the plaid. Nor will it so easilly facilitate answering calls of nature. Having said that, you're a much braver man than I to go out into the wilds so dressed. Summer, I might, but winter is time for me to hibernate. Colds kills my spine and that pretty much kills the rest of me. So I take my hat off for giving this idea a good go!!

You mention something about ancestral highlanders not having map cases - do you know if they had maps of any kind? Or did they just find their way by asking, or having a guide, or mostly only just traveling in areas they already knew...? I would love to hear your thoughts & input on this.
