    i use the 20mm/1.7 as my daily walk around/street shooting setup with the g7. as a street shooter, 5.6 is solid but knowing you might need a wider aperture is also helpful. thanks for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.

    Thank you - I enjoy your reviews. I've shot with the 20mm v2 for a few years now. It is my favorite general purpose lens for some of the reasons you outlined: small size/weight, fast optically, etc. I use it on small bodies i.e. GF6, GX85 where it is an excellent fit. I have a portable yet versatile package for every day use. I agree the AF performance is a bit slow and noisy, but it doesn't bother me.

      Would you be comfortable using this lens in a quiet setting? Whereas, if you were trying to be quiet as well. How loud is it actually? Can you maybe compare it to an everyday sound?

    Superb review. I've used Panasonic 25mm F/1.7 for more than half a year as my main lens. However, I was tired of the inconvenience of the prime lens. Is this lens better than 25mm?

    Good review. I have first version from late 2009 and I'm surprised that version II shares same issues: slowest autofocus of all lenses because inner part moves by 1-2mm, some hunting, perhaps even unreliable focus in low light (cities after sunset - but I never noticed this on GF1 only on G85, maybe because G85 can take picture in much worse light conditions) and it's basically useless for video with change of focus. But it's good lens with small body. I still use it as lightweight travel lens with GF1 sometimes, for walks around the city and as great indoor lens - it has natural angle of view, good low light performance and nice bokeh. Optical quality is very good. It lacks zoom so it lacks versatility, but I sometimes liked challenging myself with finding optimal composition and spot

    I use this lens on my Olympus bodies. I thought it was a better value than the Olympus 17mm f 1.8. I love the compactness, sharpness, and color rendition of this lens. The only problem I had was getting some chromatic aberration but this was a one-time occurrence after shooting directly into the sun.

      As Igor has indicated, thank you for identifying by critical scrutiny, which f-stop is the sharpest. That is very useful info. I'm a beginner, who thought up till now, that the smallest aperture was the best for both foreground and background sharpness.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      stan your're welcome, lenses are usually the sharpest somewhere in the middle - from F4 to F8, but that depends on the specific lens of course.

    • @uglyigor3055
      @uglyigor3055 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Stan yeah. Aehm. No. Definately not. It's just the fastest. Not the sharpest everytime. And that counts for every lens you will ever buy. The smallest Aperture is never the sharpest one for the lens itself. It just decreases time you need to take the picture and therefore you get less blurry image in regard to moving objects or camera shake. But when you for example take a picture from an object that doesn't move, in a closed room with no wind and on a tripod or stable ground then you will see that you get sharper image when using the sharpest aperture. Hope this is understandable. But no worries dude. I thought so too as I was a beginner. I guess that is a mistake alot of people make ;)

    This is the only fast m43rds prime lens that will fit in my pocket with the GX85. It is such a sexy combination with the silver lens matching the silver on the top of the GX85. I can carry the camera with me anywhere and get quality pictures without needing a camera bag.

    I love this little lens. It's cheap, it's small, it's light, it's decent quality, and it's my favorite focal length. 35mm is too wide for my tastes and 50mm is too tight for me. 40-45mm is my favorite. Put this on a small camera body and you have a good walk around lens. Yes the auto focus isn't fast, but it's acceptable. I hope Panasonic comes out with a version 3 to improve the auto focus speed. Love your videos!

    • @TheHybridShooter

      Optics are the same, II is more resistant to the flare. Sharpness differences are only cause by variability between each copy of those lenses.

Let me know what you think? I highly appreciate your opinion. Thanks

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That basically depends on how you want to use it, for advanced filmmaking GH5S is the best, for more causal hand-held shooting GH5 or G9 would be better. For wide angle shooting you just need wide-angle lens like this one: bit.ly/Panasonic7-14mmF4

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have two Mk.1 in silver and black (not quite sure why). The lens will not AFC but will Continuous-Focus in movie mode - these are not the same focus modes anyway. Movie mode is more of a follow-focus. They do use the DFD, that is down to the camera not the lens anyway. They may hunt a little on an Olympus back, but that is down to the back and the focus motor speed. Manual focus offers very fine control.
      In movie mode it is going to crop-in to whatever resolution you have chosen, it will seem longer - and which is why the 15mm f/1.7 is a useful addition for video, if a little wide for most stills.
      Of possible interest the minimum focus distance is just 0.2m.
      Pancakes suit the tiny E-PL7 but also used on PEN-F, E-M5ii, G5, GX7, GH4, G7, G9. The E-PL7 can be slipped into jeans pocket, it's that small.
      They are not the fastest lens to AFS. This is down to the fine but slow focus motors. If we delve into the exif it is a Leica. It is an old design, one of the first MFT lenses.
      The noise they make is an almost imperceptible, "whip-whip". Maybe The Hybrid Shooter has a noisy example, or it is the Mk.2 (they haven't always made new versions better).
      The focus rings are not graunchy, the silver one I have is perhaps a little stiffer than the black one. Again The Hybrid Shooter may have a poor example. If it is a demo lens that has been handed around it may have been abused.
      Subjectively the silver one looks more "plastic", the black one looks more "proper".
      They will take a Leica type screw on hood but generally do not need it.
      The image circle diameter of the 4/3 sensor is 22.5mm so the 20mm is a standard "40mm" lens whereas the 25mm is a standard "50mm" lens, the image circle diameter of full frame is 43mm so its 50mm standard lens is a trifle long.
      The 20mm is not nearly as sharp as the Leica 25mm f/1.4 but it is smaller and a lot cheaper. I perhaps regret trading in the Leica but the pair of 20s get a lot more work.
