      Which step up rings do I habe to buy for the 25mm? It‘s filter size is 46mm but nearly every step up ring bundle, including the One recommended in the link, hasn‘t got a 46mm Filter size step up Ring. Or are you Abos to use a 49mm ring too?

    I don’t know how is it possible for a pancake lens to be such as sharp. It’s sharper than all other my lenses: 8-18mm Leica, 12-40mm pro Olympus, 35-100mm Lumix II and 14-150mm Olympus! It’s fantastic.

    Excellent video. I think you make a compelling case for the 25mm in general. I also note that Max Yuryev has several times recommended the 25mm as the best first lens after the kit zoom that comes with many cameras. In my own case, however, I needed something to work with a specific fixed tripod position in a small room, with focus set over wifi using Panasonic's android app. By experimenting using a zoom lens I determined that 20mm was the right fit for me. I'm happy with my purchase but I agree that the ergonomics are a bit awkward with the small size, even for getting the lens on and off the body. The focus ring takes up so much of the depth of the lens there's not a lot to grip on. And the auto-focusing is not just slow (actually that doesn't really bother me even though it's noticeable), but it's also quite noisy. Again not a problem in my own situation, but worth knowing about for someone considering the lens.

    I have a GH5 with a couple of the Panasonic zooms lenses about a month ago. I just got the 20mm pancake as my first prime lens from Amazon. The first thing I noticed was the way it felt in the hand and how you have to “racecar” the focus ring like a five-year-old.
    Obviously, every lens is a compromise in some way. I don’t this will be a problem for me as I shoot still and video.
    I have not mastered a technique where you “auto assist” manual focusing. This would make this lens more useful, especially for video... and it would help me so nice I wear eyeglasses and have to put them on & off all the the time!

    I have both and use both but I prefer the field of view and image quality of the 20mm. The 20mm and a small aluminium vented hood are always on my camera, I don't even bother with lens cap on it. I don't manual focus much in this range anyway.
    For video the 25mm is better and the 42.5 is a nice combo to go with it.
    Still, I'd rather take the 20mm when going out with only one or two lens. At the price they sell I don't see why not getting both.
    5mm make quite a big difference on m43 crop.

    • @pretol8058

      Take that aluminum hood off, that motor on 20mm is already too slow to focus without aluminum hood attached DIRECTLY to the moving piece on the front of the lens.

    I have the 20mm II, it was the kit lens with my GX7. I shoot stills mostly and for that purpose it is a great lens. Sometimes I feel the af is slow but the size makes the camera so compact. I wish Pany would make a new pancake, that would be interesting.

    I have both the 20mm and the 12-35mm. The 20mm is extremely sharp... maybe even sharper than the 12-35mm, for stills at least. But as you say it has pretty slow AF and the manual focus is a pain if you do videos... its gonna be all shaky because you have to move your hand so much. Checkout my video I did with the 20mm! ;)

    I prefer the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 for auto focus travel and use the manual Mitakon 25mm f0.95 for low light. Have you upgraded to the new firmware? With my GH5, the 20mm does autofocus fine now. It does not do AFC for photos or focus transitions, and the motors are loud when taking photos, but for some reason the motors are smooth and silent when autofocusing video.

    Hi, Ryan, great review! I am GH4 beginner user and have this 12-35 mm lens. Recently I am trying to practice the focus pulling trick from foreground to the background using follow focus system but I noticed the focus distance of this lens doesn't physically stand at fixed position. I set two marks on the focus ring but could repeat the focus pulling cause it's very difficult to keep a constant pulling speed. So if I am trying to do this type of shot, what kind of lens should work? Will regular prime lens work?

    • @RyanTimms
      @RyanTimms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fangshi Zhu so the Panasonic lenses are what's called "focus by wire" meaning there's no fixed positions. Some primes, like the ones in this video, are also focus by wire. What you are trying to do will require a fully manual or cine lens. Check out the Rokinon cines might be just what you want.

    • @fangshizhu9383
      @fangshizhu9383 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @RyanTimms

    Hi great video, i did bought this lens!! Can someone please explain me the crop factor? i mean is by 2 in micro fourth thirds yeah, but that means that the 25 mm lens in my panasonic g7 is the equivalent image to a 50 mm or the 25 mm lens only looks like a 50 mm in a full frame camera.

    • @RyanTimms
      @RyanTimms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      crop factor refers to "full frame equivalent". People will say Micro Four Thirds is a 2X crop factor, meaning you multiply everything the lens does by 2 and that if your full frame equivalent. The 25mm lens has the effective focal length of a 50mm. You cannot put this 25mm onto a full frame camera, it wont cover the sensor since it is designed for MFT sensors. That is way you see a lot of "strange" focal lengths in MFT lenses. Things like 17.5 (which is a 35mm FF equivalent) or 42.5 (85mm FF equivalent) and so on. This also applies to Depth of Field but the math there gets a little more complicated and frankly is over my head. The short answer is this. Think of the 25mm f1.7 as panasonic's "nifty fifty". I hope this helps!

      @@benjaminkats3401 If you are manual focusing I would skip the new lenses and for much cheaper buy a good selection of vintage lenses. That is except for a good wide angle lens. You will need a newer manual 12mm or wider lens to go with the vintage lenses.

    Buying my very first lens for my GH5 body. I just cannot decide which lens of these two I should get but I know I want a prime. Spent hours and hours reading reviews on Amazon and B&H and watched over a dozen videos. I am just unable to make a decision so I decided to ask you here.
    I am going to be using this camera for video only. Short films and TH-cam videos. Shallow depth of field is important to me, so is sharpness. The f/1.7 it's only $147.99 right now but the f/1.4 it's $597.99. The f/1.7 it is just 1/4 of the f/1.4's price. That is a significant amount. Yes, you gain a stop of light, but... is it really worth it? Considering that they are both made out of plastic. Is the sharpness difference in 4K video at all noticeable? Is the shallow depth of field difference between f/1.4 and f/1.7 just practically inexistent?
    Big question is: If you were in this situation, which 25mm lens would you get?
    Thank you very much!!

      Great question Ben, I haven't used the 25mm f1.4 but I do have the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 + Speedbooster so gives me effectively a 25mm f1.2. I will say the DOF difference between f1.7 and f1.2 is minor, but you can tell when you try and focus. If I were in your shoes I would get the f1.7 (fantastic bang for buck with this lens. underrated a bit in my opinion as most photographers prefer the 20mm) and use the extra cash to get another prime or the 12-35 f2.8 zoom. That is the most flexible lens I own and cant recommend it enough. Hope this helps!

      Ryan Timms Aweome Ryan. Thank you for your answer. I did get the 1.4 and the 15mm 1.7. Im about to purchase a $18.99 adapter for Nikkor lenses to MFT. Manual focus but I can use my Nikkor 24-70 and 70-200 if ever needed. Cheers man and happy 2018!! 👍🏻👍🏻
