Blizzard Doesn't Understand Survivorship Bias

  • Overwatch's balance is heavily driven by data, and if Blizzard knew how to analyze its data and avoid common biases, then that wouldn't be a huge issue. Unfortunately, they're tripping over the lowest possible bars on that front, and it's making the game worse. Game balance isn’t just a science with clear inputs and outputs, but a complicated art involving understanding the flow of a game - a lot of which can’t be immediately seen in the raw data.
Quick disclaimer: This video was recorded, uploaded, and scheduled for release the day before the hotfix suddenly dropped, in case you're wondering why it doesn't specifically reference those changes. Obviously, a couple sentences of the video are now slightly out-of-date - and if I genuinely felt that the changes disproved my core argument, I'd have cancelled the scheduled publication and redone part/all of it. As it is, while the changes do affect some of the heroes I specifically mention (Ana, Kiriko, Sojourn, Doomfist), I don't think it disproves that core argument that Blizzard doesn't understand this concept or that these heroes are victims of that failure, and so going back into this video to chop it up wouldn't really be worth it - either to me in terms of time, or to any viewers in terms of meaningfully affecting the case I'm making. Hope that all makes sense, and hopefully the 6 people who read the full description are satisfied with the explanation.
