In all the years I've been driving out to that property in the winter, I've never had such a scary incident happen to me (and it happened twice!). Hopefully it'll never happen again, and I'm thankful it's over. 😊
We had a big snowstorm hit, so lots of snow at the little off-grid cabin. My goal was to complete the loft (enough to put my bed up there), and I was able to do that!
I am questioning the small stove - it definitely burns hot, but it does take a long time to get the place warm when it's -10 C outside. It also requires a lot of 'babysitting' and refilling, but I will stick it out for now. I won't lock myself into it when I get to finishing off that area though, just in case. I do wake up early (between 4-6am) to turn on the little propane heater for an hour or two to take the morning chill off.
I am really happy with how the loft turned out - it's just the right size for me. I am not loving the reclaimed dock lumber in that space as much as I thought I would (just so many competing woods now), but the decorating isn't near done 😝
I've been mulling over ladder ideas now...
Thanks so much for watching and see you in the next video 😊

Hey Michele, Glad you did not go over the edge of the bridge, and foxy roxy would be kaput, who would I get my news from? I don't think the loft will hold the weight of 2 people. An electric blanket would keep you warm. stay safe.
Will do
When the zip won't zip, nip the closer together slightly with some pliers. Good as new
Great job! Looks good! I hope you secured the side of the boards on the notch side as well. I would’ve put the loft right where you did, wake up to that beautiful body of water and see the forest. I mean that’s why you made the cabin out there right?🤷♂️ Get it girl!!❤
Michelle, I wish you would put some railing around the deck on your cabin. I really get nervous when you get close to the edge. One slip is all it would take.
I was wondering about that as well.
Me too! Accidents happen! Please at least put a temporary handrail up, just incase! Thank God, the railing was on the bridge too, like you said! Glad your ok!!
I would harness up and tie off to build that railing even if it's in the spring lol.
at least something temporary
In other words she slips that's her fault lol 😅😂
A major truck difference going from unleaded to diesel is the substantially heavier front end. The 2500 Duramax is designed/expecting to have weight in the bed or towing. From experience with mine, if you add a few hundred pounds of ballast in the bed and you'll find the traction, tracking, and stability will greatly improve.
That's true of most pickups, though. Whenever I lived out in the Midwest, I'd throw an engine block or sandbags or something in the back of my pickups (C-10, F100, and so on).
Yeah, but in that deeper snow, especially heavier snow, like that seems to be, once it grabs you and sends you off track, there's not much you can do but ride it out. Been there done that on my older, heavier 4X4s or my newer Trail Boss.
Pretty sure hers is a 1500 with the 3.0 Dmax, no?
@@DanielSon69 Good point. .. i keep forgetting about that model, although I'd love to drop that Dmax 3.0 in the wife's Hummer H3.
@@DanielSon69 yes correct
Your one tough cookie Michelle,i admire your tenacity, loft looks amazing 👏 keep up the great work.
She is simply awesome. I hope her husband appreciates what a great girl he has.
Use a pair of pilers to slightly squeeze the wings of the zipper together. The gap can grow after repeated use, causing it to stop zipping correctly.
Roxy deserves the best view possible. I am sure Roxy will approve of the loft you have provided her.
Oh, I so agree with the comments about the railing: it curls my toes! Glad you got your sleep loft finished.
The view of the cabin and the view out of the cabin simply couldn't be any more breathtaking. The antidote to busy city life and traffic.... How beautiful.
I am so glad you stuck with your original plan for the loft to wake up to the view! Good choice!
Full moon nights will be really cool from the loft. What a view.
Wow! Glad your ok ! That’s one sketchy bridge!
So beautiful! The scenery too.
Every time I see her I start singing She A Beauty by the Tubes.
@@flynnstone3580her eyes…
@@tufankilinc636 I love her eyes, they're mesmerizing.
@@flynnstone3580 Just remember, buddy, she is taken.
@@tufankilinc636 it was a compliment, I've never asked a gal before if she was married before I told her she had beautiful eyes.
Coming Home - To a house full of dogs who love you is the absolute best. It could be 5hrs, days or weeks and the love is just as fulfilling. Big thx to u and Steve on behalf of unwanted dogs everywhere 😊
even a piece of 1/4" plywood on the bunk /loft will strengthen the slats Michelle . I'VE SAID SHE SCARES ME WHEN SHE GOES OUT ONTO THE DECK WITH "NO RAILING.
Michy ... you never cease to impress. Fulfilling your dreams. Thanks for taking us along. 🙂
Hi Michelle, you might consider having a winch installed on the front of your truck!
Also, you may need a larger stove in your cabin. I really enjoy your videos.
Agree on a larger stove 👍🏻
I know it sounz ridiculous, but she could heat that small cabin with nothing more than some candles.@@DanielSon69
I have a cub cadet in my short bus in the Pacific NW. It’s only 96 sf and it doesn’t even heat this. I have to supplement w propane heat. They could possibly heat a playhouse
The drive out & loss of control scared me even though I already knew you were OK. Your self-reliance in how you tackle problems in sketchy conditions inspires me. The recycled wood loft and view are superb! I imagine happy times spent falling asleep and waking up to that incredible view. Your cabin looked like a peppermint candy with all the snow and red and green tape. Truly inviting in any weather. On another note, my 96-year-old friend showed me how she uses a small sheet of crumpled waxed paper as fire starter for her kindling or feather sticks. Works like a charm for a quick starting a fire.
Thanks Nancy! Yes - I’m soooo excited to finally spend my first night up there!
Great tip for the waxed paper. I’m gonna try it!!
Glad you're sticking to your original plan with the loft. You won't be satisfied any other way since that was the vision you originally had. Absolutely stunning views!
The loft looks really good with the barn wood , you do good work
The inner cross beam of your loft bed where you notched out the ends: the extended piece of the beam that it hangs on seems rather thin. I would question the long-term structural integrity of that beam depending upon who-all and what-all you have up there. Thoughts include such things as other people using that loft where the weights might get higher than you have anticipated as a static load and any dynamic loads that will occur. Just a thought.
if she adds the right strong tie brackets with the proper fasteners, it should be fine.
Agreed. Concerning.
I'm no expert, but due to this weak point, it looks like the beam essentially has the load bearing strength of a 2x4 lying flat.
You should be able to significantly improve the situation if you can find a properly fitting, metal, Face Mount Joist Hanger
PS - that notch at 22:00 -- maybe screw in a 2x2 strip below the notch for added load bearing.
Love your videos, Michelle! Even when your mrain is bush 🙂
Ya me too. The beam will split at the notch. Would have been better to taper the top. I would like to see 3, 3/8 or 1/2 inch threaded rods front to back also, to keep the bed boards from slipping out.
Hey Michelle, new to your site. Love it !! If you k own any good blacksmiths , they could forge you a rustic oversize joist hanger type of metal to give you the much needed support. I agree with the others that more weight etc may lead to the weaker end giving out. Just my 2 cents worth !
i love the loft where it is having that stunning vista. i would have done the same. always impressed with your builds. thanks for another great video!
The old barn wood is gorgeous
We put in drywall on our cabin walls and then silvered barn wood. It was gorgeous. After 30 years on the Manistee River in Northern Lower Michigan, my parents sold the cabin and property. Unfortunately I cold not afford to buy it from him.
The view from your cabin is priceless.
So surprised North Face haven’t reached out to sponsor you with a new coat… Really, really enjoyed watching this journey you’ve been on from the first days of drilling the rock for the foundation, and laying the base deck. Your experiences with rats and chipmunks, to throwing your power tools down the hill to justify going on a little trek.. Really looking forward to seeing your completed project, although not sure what I’ll do with my Sunday evenings here in the UK when you’ve completed it. Maybe an annex for your kit or utility room?
I love when you talk to the camera - "my mrain is bush man" - I enjoyed that bit. Lysdexia? Nothing stops you - what an inspiration.
And she looked right at the camera and said "Did ya' get it?"
I can understand very well, that you love the wiew to the lake. It is a wonderfull wiew.
My family live since centuries at an island. In my room at this island, i have a wonderfull wiew over the baltic sea. I love it.
Wow what a great sleeping loft. Also the heat from the wood stove will rise and be warmer up there. Good job.
You are totally awesome 😊 Glad you are safe from the most scariest moment! Love the loft, so worth the wait ❤
another beautiful video! As a carpenter/contractor, it takes a while to get it through our heads that the most efficient design might not match the vision someone has for their project. i love your loft ❤
you can fix the zipper with a needle nose plyers. Just need to pinch the sliding part together a little bit. i have a an older work coat that i do it to all the time. Give it a try. Good luck.
What a beautiful view to wake up to from the cliff cabin loft. Glad your new truck got no damage. That had to be scary.
Incredible view. I'm glad that you're building your cabin the way that you want it and not how some commenters want you to do it.
Hello Michelle, I would have a MR.BUDDY Propane heater to help supplement the heating aspect. The other option is a diesel heater; this option will help while you, kick start your wood burning stove when its really cold. 8yr old Brady said, you look cold.. 🥰 Clyde!!!
Ya but don't do a non vented propane heater... Way too much moisture in the air. Will freeze on walls and melt when it gets warm...
OMG I am surprised you didn't clean the deck off before working out there as one slip could be fatal.
Please be careful. We all love you and all the ups and downs you show us on your videos. I found out Friday. I'm on the other days in my life. The only takes a second. I was at the landfill because I had missed the trash truck Friday morning so decided to take it too the landfill so the bears didn't tear up. The trash can. And through a couple things out I had in the backseat then was going to open the back hatch dripped fill against that cut. My lip broke my arm. Never know I'm 74. I'm too old for this. Thanks again. We all love you, Steve and the puppies for babies
I think you did an excellent job on the loft! That view is wonderful! You live in a beautiful winter wonderland.
i wonder if some "rocks" around that wood stove would hold some heat for overnight?
I was wondering if putting snow chains on your tires would help reduce the chances of skidding and any further mishaps?
This is by far the greatest TH-cam channel. Michelle is so natural and don't hide he uncertainties or (always very small) mistakes. All those reasonings make these videos so easy and relaxing.
Whew.....!!! Scary trestle travel...!! Love your cozy loft nest. What a view. Hope it's not too chilly next to that window. A great accomplishment for ol' Michy Mush Brain. What a fun greeting....... coming home to all that love. And, of course, Clyde heading out on his own to check out the status of the "Nose News".
Awesome
Just coming across your channel riminded me that the mountains are where my heart is. So many good memories in the misty, green, or snowy mountains, mtn rivers! There's a kind of peace or serenity up there. ☺
Its a good thing you came in summertime in Canada. The winters will challenge you a good bit.
Awesome loft. Can image 2 people in a sleeping bag skin to skin enjoying that view plus some adult fun.
Wow Michelle, this is really scary. I never go into the woods alone and I don’t like winter. I lock my doors at night and say my prayers good luck.
“Danger Dame”…bring it on!!! 😎👍
This was a fun episode to watch. I felt for you when you were starting the fire... OOOOH it looked cold. But it worked out well, and your loft looks awesome! Id drink my coffee there, too!
The cold air that drops off your upper windows can be mitigated by a thin open slot parallel to your bed as close as you can engineer to the window, it needs a 2" raised lip on your side of the slot. This lets the cold air drop through to the floor below before it gets to you, and creates cabin circulation towards your loft bunk.
Michelle, I think most of us really appreciate the amount of work you put into that cabin to get to that cup of coffee and that incredible view. We also appreciate your efforts to bring us along and in that regard I think we enjoyed that cup of coffee just a little bit as well. Thanks for Sharing!
Michelle just started binge watching your videos. Your lifestyle hits my dream way of living on the head. I find your sense of humor great. Your poor husband Steve has hands full.
Michy what a Beautiful Cabin to Recharge Your Soul and Brain from all the Headache of the Crazy People out There. Michy you are an awesome handywoman to have around and the New loft would be awesome for hubby and You to enjoy the View and Privacy. Michy you only need one last Build unit for this Cabin. . What a sweet view this cabin offers
Replace the zipper with a heavy duty ykk metal zipper.
You can do it hand sewing.
I've done it on a wool coat I got. The wool was great (new) but had a cheap Chinese zipper which broke quickly.
I measured the zipper, carefully "ripped" out the old one using a razor knife, ordered a good ykk one online, and sewed the new one in with heavy duty thread.
Very happy with the results. If I can do it being an inexperienced 67 yr old guy, pretty sure you can. Good luck!
Lots of fun. I have a off grid cabin in North Idaho. My wife and I snowshoe/snowmobile into it in the winter. I put in a bigger than needed wood stove to heat my cabin. It gets me through the night and I can can easily heat it in very cold conditions. You might upgrade your stove, I know those small stoves work in small areas but they are working hard to heat things up and take continual restocking. Just a thought. It's better to crack a window for cool air and sleep through the night.
Beautiful views of the lake and mountains. What you have there is just a perfect little sanctuary to peace out and relax for mental health!
Glad you only nailed one side of the loft boards, that will give room for the planks to expand and contract in the groove. Looks awesome great job michygoss.
If you could get those fans for the top of your stove, you would have enough air movement to eliminate the condensation on your windows. Air flow is key!
Great job on the loft but you are right about people questioning the structural integrity of those thin loft boards but.... if you think it's good for you then who else matters? It looks fantastic and you have a million dollar view. Enjoy the fruits of your hard labour, you are amazing!
Just a suggestion, I had a zip up hoody with a bad zipper, I simply used a pair of pliers to give the zipper a "little squeeze" and it returned to working order. it worked fine for a year or more and then started coming apart on its own again, will try it one more time but if not, at least I got another year or more out of it.
The small woodstoves are great but you are constantly feeding them - try a manufactured "fire log" for a longer lasting burn for sleep time. - love the build!!
Engineer a portable front railing that can be raised for work/snow/safety etc sessions and lowered for enjoyment/ relaxation periods so as to not take away the beautiful views you have captured from your deck and cabin yet provide a safety when needed! A lightweight pulley and winch system at the front corners could solve the problem which would raise/lower a barrier to prevent an accident. With your skills, talents, and aesthetic prowess, you can get both easily! Really enjoy your creativity and ingenuity. Doug Robison
After reading all of the comments about your cabin front view and the potential for having a fall off the deck, I certainly would recommend a woven rope catch about five feet wide from the edge outward and along the length of the longest deck side, like they use for trapeze performers in the circus, placed around the outside edge of the deck placed level grade or slightly below deck level so as to not impede the fabulous view but also stop anyone leaving the deck hard surface inadvertently. This could be made by weaving strong enough rope in a tight “X” pattern ( 5 x 10 ) feet long which would allow rain/snow to fall thru but stop a human body from continuing to the ground and on down the steep slope. This could be supported by 4 poles 5 feet long outward from the deck to attach the rope “catch” to. This could be done frugally, aesthetically, and relatively quickly done yet still provide some safety protection while not creating ongoing maintenance issues. Good luck if you choose to accept this mission! This is only a suggestion and there never was or will be any intent to tell you what or should do if anything. Again, I enjoy your presentations and look forward to reading/viewing them often! Lt Col Doug Robison USAF Ret./ Capt. UAL Ret.
Chains or at least, studded snow tires, Michy! Also, a railing of some sort. Glad to see you going to build a shop, too. I would build it as close to your house as you can stand it. And, the bigger - the better!
That look before and after you tossed the bread on the stove! I actually chuckled out loud. Like you were saying “ you judging me? “ and the look afterwards and little jiggle of your head. “ so now! “ Lol! that was cute..
Hello Michelle good to hear your okay, that kind of stuff is a little unnerving. The loft is taking shape, one more section would really balance the look and then put a second layer to have a bit more room uptop. It's taking shape just fine. Once you have the stone on that will help hold the heat longer. Stay warm and safe and have a great week, and God bless amen.
The loft looks great! I can totally see why you want it there! It doesn't block out two much light and it is a dream realized. Awesome!
Ya, I was surprised too. I thought it would seem much darker than it actually is. Bonus!
Ya, I was surprised too. I thought it would seem much darker than it actually is. Bonus!
Wow! You most certainly have something special going there😊 Looking forward to the progress!
You're practical and you always use your common sense. And you are always intelligent about what you do. Your common sense most always shines through in the end and this time was no different. Great job.
Courageous woman doing a solo adventure , love it !
The most humble badass... impressive in every way. 💪
Good on you... What a great milestone.... please please put a hand rail on the deck. I'm freaking out? When you said at the beginning of the video about the really scary experience I was thinking that you almost slipped off the deck. Even without the hand rail... you're still an inspiration!
Promise you will be here forever ❤️
Wow that's a lot of snow😂 snow is beautiful but I'm glad I don't have to live in it I think you're bad near the windows turned out great😂 but there's no room for Steve only if he sleeps on top of you😂❤🎉 the cabin is absolutely beautiful❤ I do wish you'd put a railing up on the cabin😮 and your family was excited to see you home safely❤😮 I saw Steve even wagging his tail and trying to get by all the other dogs😂😂❤🎉 see you on the next one thank you🎉🇨🇦🇨🇦🎉
I definitely think you need some more aggressive tires.
I can see why you want the loft in the front. Since you have that sliding door in the front, you won't notice the light lost from the loft. Please take steps to stay safe in the loft. It may grow tiresome having to feed the stove from the loft.
If you ask me, it was the right decision to build the bed at the window front, it is perfect and this view. 😍 Great job Michelle, I love it. ❤🔥
It was more work routing the groove in the beam but I do think it will look nice like that when it’s done 👍🏻 that location is INCREDIBLE !!!
The truck can always be replaced...........there is only one you. relived to know that you intact ( and still quirky funny)!
Good to see you back on... I was out with my internet down for 10 days. Bad news from here... my lab dog Holly-11 years old has lung, spleen and kidney cancer... 4-6 weeks.. she's such a sweety. I don't want to put her down. She isn't in any pain, just tired and not eating much.
Awe. Poor Holly. Spoil her rotten in her last days!
You are one of my heroes just to let you know... Awesome cabin and outstanding fiew!
I'm really glad you didn't get hurt. Thankful for that railing. You be careful.
That’s some awesome country in the snow..
Your cabin is perfect..
If that cat shows up, my money is on the Mich! 🤼♀️ ! 😎
Wow! I’m glad you are okay! That’s one sketchy bridge!
Last week I was walking in the field, slight incline, snow covered like 2". Then, ice underneath unknown to me. One second standing, next second, flat on the ground. Think of the trestle this way, the railing saved you when you slid. The railing on the cabin deck would too.
We were not alone then! When we got that stopped we found a gold coin seller had screwed us as well. But we finally got that done. With all the new tech it not a surprise we are being taken for money and other things. Yea a two legged Squirrel, A cute one at that! You may still want to put a board on the underside for more support and safety! where is your chalk line???? All and ALL you did fantastic!!! You Go Girl
Michelle, use a cable system for your railing, will keep the " Danger Wil Robinson" comments down. Maybe make a rope net below to catch anybody that falls. Have steve get some steel strapping for under your beams, you deleted 2/3's of the strength of those boards. 1/8" x 1.5" x 8' steel. Cut to order. 👍💋
Good ole Amazon, My account was compromised also. Nightmare to say the least. Rustic setting makes it great, stick to your guns it’s your vision. Your one motivated woman I enjoy watching these videos. Thank You
Michie, Michie, Michie! You stress me out! I believe I said to be careful on crow Bridge..?! OMG that is a long way down! Thank God you are safe and alive. Now please build a railing on the cabins porch! You cut and work with wood up there like if you have a 10 ft wide deck with a 7 in drop! Be careful when you are on it. At least you kept some of the snow on it this time. 👍The loft looks awesome, I was kinda skeptical about the slot on the 4x4 to slide in the bed boards but it actually came out great! Looks awesome, great job nurse michey! Let's hope they hold your body weight lol. So tiny,, and You're so beautiful! ❤ I'm sure you know that you're an amazing builder. 👏
The loft looks fantastic Michy . You're a genius.

Hello from Brunswick, Maine, US...
God, what a beautiful nature you have. Michelle, thanks for the video. Greetings from Russia
Wow!! You did a wonderful job on the loft!! It's perfect. Waking up there will be magical!!! ❤
I am so glad you didn't die!
You could easily add some half inch plywood or OSB, or something of that nature and glue it on top of the wood strips to add structural integrity to your sleeping loft. Then cover it with foam or bedding, and no one would see it. three tubes of construction adhesive should do the trick.
Well Dear; The key is to install your tire chains BEFORE you get stuck. Did you ask yourself how difficult it would have been to install your tire chains had you got stuck ON that bridge? Let alone exiting the cab between the railings.
As far as your woodstove, if you stacked rocks or firebrick around it, it would create a (heat sink) that would help keep the cabin a more uniform or constant temp. Just a thought.
And I agree with a previous comment I read,,, please build a railing on your deck. I realize winter is a dangerous time to do so,, but as soon as possible? I really don't want to see such a wonderful person as yourself get hurt.
Thanks once again, Michelle for another wonderful video, I like the view from your loft that is excellent view. thank you for taking us along on your journey on building your cabin. You do need to be careful driving on a snowy road. and have a lovely day and a beautiful week.
Great episode! Glad that trestle was designed as it was, it looked to be a long drop off the side. The word you sought, 'inlaid'. That foam should help the rigidity some and help keep the base warmer. Kind of funny, you get home, open the door and all the puppies come out to see you, then there's Clyde, one nose nudge and off he goes out and about. Hope he had his GPS collar on. -- Jerry
He was just running to my truck to see what’s up. He doesn’t go far this time of year 👌
I can't tell if that's a lake or a river, but whatever it is, that view is absolutely priceless! I'm envious.
Hey Michelle, maybe you should add a piece of 1/4-3/8” plywood on top of the hardwood before adding the foam piece on top. If anyone ever sleeps up there that’s considerably heavier than you it may get interesting.😊
Adding plywood on top, or stiff foam as she said, or anything else, will do NOTHING to improve the structural integrity of the bed. Those planks are simply too thin for significant weight bearing. The system needs a re-think to allow minimum 2x lumber (rough cut, actual) supports.
You are amazing what you accomplish in a day .Your awesome!
What an amazing view to wake up to! I'm glad you stuck to your plan and kept the bunk up front, as it would have been wrong anywhere else.
I'm also glad that you've left the deck rail off so far, since it's hilarious to hear all the Safety Sallys whine about it. 🤣
Not saying that I don't worry about you here and there, but you know what you're doing.
Thanks, MG! 😊
No railing on that narrow deck... 3 Yodel and 4 bounce trip down to the lake... But the VIEW!!!!! WOW!!!!!! Just dont sleepwalk... God Bless. Jerry
