    These cars are not made for the 1/4 mile. You can get faster cars cheaper. But if the point is to have fun, the Boxster is hard to beat. I've owned a ton of cars in my life, but my last 2 summer cars have been Boxster and Boxster S. They give you more smiles per gallon than anything else, and they're very reliable. They're not the loudest, fastest, or most boldly styled, but when you grow up you really don't care what others think.

      ClimbnFish for me, its the mk1 early boxter s. people forget the Porsche Boxster is a car made for fun ajd lively driving. not wannabe racing drivers with no talent.
      i agree with you.
      for me the best road going cars are The original mk1 boxster S, the 914 Porsche and the Honda Del Sol VTi or SiR

      Boxster S 981 with PDK/Chrono does 0-60 4.2 secs, 0-100 10.4 secs and 1/4 mile in 12.7 secs @ 111mph. Seeing as this car was produced in 2012, that seems pretty fast to me. Faster than an M3 at the same time.

    I have an older 911 and I just bought my third Boxster S. A true convertible sports car with balanced handling and great acceleration. Yes, it's cheaper than a 911, 911S, Turbo or Turbo S....but here in the USA we have a speed limit in most places. The Boxster S does 170 mph, isn't that fast enough to save $30,000? The 911 is a GREAT car, but in my opinion, the Boxster S is the best Porsche bag for the buck.

  • @thedudeabides1443
    @thedudeabides1443 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Both are great cars. But having driven many 911s, Boxsters and Caymans, the Boxster is what the 911 USED to be-light and nimble and plenty fast, just what a sports car SHOULD be. Over the years, the 911 has gotten longer, heavier and more bloated and is basically now a GT car. Still a great car, just not as much fun to drive as the Boxster (or Cayman). That’s why I chose a 981 Boxster S. Plus, the roof down experience is awesome!

  • @clawsonbob1
    @clawsonbob1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Good comparison. There’s one area that you overlooked, which really allows Porsche to keep the new Boxster S in check-It’s the gearing. If one could re-gear the final drive/trans of the 981 Boxster S, to match, gear for gear the 911 both 997 and 991 models, the result would be different That said, both are thrilling cars to drive

    "Poor man's porsche" lol omg . Haters will always find something wrong . The people saying this most likley can't even afford a boxter . I would buy the boxter and so would many other people who can own 911's and other cars . Please take a seat with the poor man talk . Your poor for even thinking in that mind frame . Why can't I buy this because I like it ?

    I'll bet the track time of the Cayman would have been better. Porsche has spaced their models out pretty well. But for a $30k difference I'll take the Boxster every time. Especially when a 911 Cabriolet is closer to $50k more.

    eh? it looks like the boxster DID beat the 911 on a couple of drag runs. 11:48 shows 13.271s vs 13.444s. and 11:56 shows 13.105s vs 13.211s

    Excellent video, describing the differences for us average car owners. One thing that frustrates me, (as well as the crew of that famous Car TV show), is that Porsche seems to hold back on the potential of the Boxster. I wonder what they could come up with if they weren't constrained by product line profitability restrictions

    Any time I see these track comparisons where the results are a few seconds or fraction of a second in some cases, I don't understand why more people don't make a point about the driver's skills. Especially when it is different drivers. They should do every tract test a minimum of 3 times and probably 10 to find the truth. This driver may be skilled but he can make mistakes or just alter his corners different and it throws the whole test off.

    • @epicned3837
      @epicned3837 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scientifically, you have a good point. You must always limit your variables when testing anything out. This technically wouldn't be a good test because there is more than one variable.

    • @pepperoni-prepper
      @pepperoni-prepper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i found his comment about the track being busy was amusing......it was mostly wide fast corners and long straights.....giving the porsche 911 the advantage.
      that being said, its the least performing 911 and the top of the range boxter...
      i always feel these tests basically make the results agree with the stats of the cars, and dont make waves.

    I drive a 997.2 CSC and love it. While it was being detailed, Porsche gave me a PDK Boxter S loaner. The Boxter S is a GREAT car. The handling is amazing. You feel like the car is litterally rotating around your waist. It simply lacks enough power to adequately compete with the 911. But the reality is that it is a different car. It behaves in a very different way. While I still prefer the 911's tail happy handling. Both will put a big smile on your face! Porsche, there is no substitute!

    Both great cars, but honestlly wih the Boxster being a roadster, this test should have been Cayman S vs 911 - the hard top variant incidentally having 10bhp more than the Boxster. Also, I believe the suspension of the 911 is vastly different, and ultimately superior, to the 981 cars. This makes sense, as the 911 is the halo Porsche and they have to keep that brand hierarchy in place. In any case, they're all great - 911, Cayman, Boxster, it just depends which one you prefer, can afford and so on.

    You all are aware the Carrera or just 911 is the base model. The Boxter is the S model, one year newer. It should have more HP than a standard Boxter but it still wasn't enough to trounce a base 911. Porsche does that on purpose.

    • @ViceStan
      @ViceStan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +aguilpa1 There is the reason why the same exact engine in the BoxsterS makes less power, and I will repeat it again, the SAME ENGINE. Software restrictions give the 911 an advantage, because lets face it, the 911 can't be out performed by its smaller, cheaper sibling.

    Shouldn't this be a comparison between the Cayman S and the 911 Carrera?

    • @smokeytom24
      @smokeytom24 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, not really. The Cayman is exactly the same as the Boxster but with a hard top added - whilst the 911 is the opposite, originally derived as a hard top, and so the 911 convertible had to be strengthened for rigidity. The Cayman and Boxster are exactly the same - I've driven both Boxster & Cayman 981s many times. Anyone who says there are differences are nit picking.
      If anything, the comparison should have been between a convertible 911 and the Boxster which would have added weight to the 911 and therefore put the Boxster ahead (or certainly evened up) in performance and handling terms.

    This is a great comparo. I still think that there's no way Porsche will ever let a same-year Boxster in any trim beat out a base Carrera. They will handicap the mid-engine platform forever so as to never overshadow the icon. It's because of this that the 981 and 991 share the same motor, but have a 25hp gap. This is also why there will sadly never be a Boxster or Cayman turbo or GT variant. That's too bad. I've spent a lot of time piloting both, and at the limit, I prefer the Boxster.

Also, the Panamera is going to receive a facelift in the near future and possibly a new version as well (Sport Turismo). Still, the Boxster came before the Cayman. The Boxster was first presented in 1993 and the final version (986) came out in 1996. The Cayman (987c) was first introduced in 2005.

    As for the whole RR/MR debate, consider the following 17 cars, all from Porsche: 360, 550, 718, 787, 804, 904, 906, 907, 908, 909, 910, 917, 936, 956, 962, WSC-95 and the 9R6.
    All those cars have two things in common:
    1. They were all race cars designed to compete for Porsche at the highest levels of racing.
    2. They were all mid-engine, rear-wheel drive cars.
    Porsche has offered three RR cars for factory racing, but none has represented Porsche since the late 70's.

And when my 40000 boxster detonated. At 72000 miles they laughed at me and said so buy a new engine at 12000 and pay 4500 to put it in..and they were throw away cars..after 7 years I lost my ass and went back to BMW..

    I have a 2003 Boxster S, and it is a stunning car. The IMS bearings once replaced were the only concern. Bang for your buck, great car.

    Great video. But can you repeat the comparison against the 991 cab? And maybe add a nice twisty road to it (the Stelvio would be great but it is closed now ;) ).

    Boxster is a nice sports car with a good driving performance for low cash. So you get a good return on invest. But a 911 is a 911 and this for years. What a luck that you can choose 911 S and 4S so you get enough horsepower to keep the boxster s away. But they are both very good sportscars and each one has its advantages for their customers. I own a 2013 991 4s and was surprised about the driving performance of the 981 S when getting the car during service repair. I liked it but wouldn't change it never the less. The 911 is more adult in my opinion.

      The new Cayman GT4 that is now out or the Boxster Spyder that is coming out will outperform the 911 Carrera.

      @@michaelquigley9719 why go that far? The boxster S is actually faster than the 911 carrera. If you run them the same spec, it is for sure a clear win for the boxster every time, you can see this better watching them launch off the hole. Mind you the boxster in the video is stick, losing gaps each shift to the pdk carrera, and doesnt have launch control. I have a boxster S pdk and it pulls out of a stop ahead and stays ahead of the 911 carrera.

    Looks like 911 has PDK? That’ll do it at the drags. Both are great cars, but with that closeness, take out the shifting and add launch control and it’s probably a different result at the dragstrip.

    Good work that man! It'll be interesting to see how the new Cayman compares to the 991 911.
    I remember watching Jethro over on Driver's Republic a couple of years ago and always enjoyed his style. Now that Harris is a little more mainstream perhaps Bovingdon will emerge as an underground cult favourite?

    Yes that`s correct. It is also known for having lot`s of traction on snow due to the engine placement. Most people need to change their driving style though, as it connot be driven in the same way as a midengine or frontengine.

    Please show the as built prices for the cars C&D! Building the cars on the website, I see that the 911 is actually cheaper than a decked out Boxster!

    I like how the win light came on for the boxter on the last race, but the guy says it still loses

  • @CaymanClub
    @CaymanClub 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes there is a power/weight ratio difference, but I didn't hear you discuss the gearing difference between these two cars which is the real reason that the 911 beats the Boxster S in the 1/4 mile. Your driver could probably use some more seat time in the Boxster to learn how to drive a mid-engine car to its maximum potential. Caymans chew up base 911's on the track all the time and often hunt down 911 S's as well, nipping at the heels of the GT3. This Boxster falling short is due to driver :)

    I've owned a 2006 Cayman S, 2013 Boxster S and now a 2012.5 911 S. Fun factor goes to the 987 and 981. The 991 C2S is faster, but hard to tell because of the size of the car. Easier to drive faster in the mid engine cars. My 991 has the roof, so it gives me the open air feeling without the convertible, rear seats when I do need to carry an extra person and I do like the challenge that it gives me with the rear engine. Problem with the 981 BS is that you do feel like you're in your wife's car.

    Cool, somebody finally stepped up and did it instead of just talking about it. With the Cayman/911 debate raging on, why isn't anyone publishing a test numbers on this car. If it's been tested, I can't find any results.
