- In this video I compare two popular Nikon dSLR kit lenses: AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR II or AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR. I look at their build quality, features, handling and measure their sharpness profiles and sweet spots (at 3 different focal lengths) as well as how much noise these lenses make when they focus and focus hunt. I give points to these Nikon kit senses to determine which one will emerge as a winner. Both of the 18-55mm kit lenses have their pros and cons. Overall they are very similar in terms of build, appearance, capabilities and vibration reduction (VR). They share the same sweet spot (F11) accross all focal lengths. However the sharpness graphs of these lenses (Nikkor AF-S and Nikkor AF-P) have different shapes making these lenses optically different. Watch the video to see which Nikon zoom lens might work best for you.

This video is superbly made, everything from the content, style, production and your voice.I recently bought my first DSLR a Nikon, 3 months ago and was amazed to see that nobody had made a good video about these lenses. All the other channels seem to be focused on reviewing very expensive cameras and lenses way out of the reach of most people. The lenses you reviewed are owned by hundreds of thousands of aspiring photographers worldwide and you have given us hope about what we have.I think this video will help your channel grow. New subscriber here. Thanks.
Hi! Thank you so much, indeed. I'm glad I could help you. Kind regards!
Thank you for this very interesting validation.
I have both lenses but I don’t have the quantified data that you have, but I have been used both lenses and had similar impressions along the lines of your validation results.😊
Hi! Thank you very much for watching. I'm currently conducting careful absolute sharpness tests with these lenses to see if one lens is sharper than the other in absolute terms, and the results are surprising. I'll very soon post that video. Kind regards!

Yes, these two zoom lenses are very sharp. They don't have the thick projection of prime or high-end zoom lenses, but they are great kit lenses.🙂
@@vlogfuji This is very true, indeed. Thanks again!
Very happy after watching this great review and comparison. New to the DSLR world only 3 months and have one of these and the second will arrive next week Very surprised that we saw nothing like this great review and comparison before now because there are hundreds of thousand of folks with these lenses around the world.Happy to know that we have good lenses.Knowing the strengths of both will help us get the max from them.
@@david777ism Hi! Thank you very much for watching. Yes, these lenses are very nice and the Nikon dSLRs are a very good way to engage in photography. Best of luck to you with your photography!
Good review
Hi! Thank you so much, I appreciate it. Kind regards!
For my first Nikon lens, I selected a minty AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR. A bit of motor noise will make no difference for my purposes, which do not include video.
Hi Ranger Smith! I agree with you. For photography noise makes no difference and you'd probably use manual focusing for video. Thank you for watching!
I have AF-P both (18-55 VR and 70-300 VR). There is something misleading in your review in first point about buttons on the lens. AF-P have automatic manual override ( its in camera MENU->settings). so you do not need this AF/MF button, much simpler and easy to use, at anytime need manual focus just directly do it (no extra step need or button to be pressed, need autofocus just press again halfway shutter button, I have move focus to 'back button focus' AF-L/AE-L more easy and conviniet ).
AF-P probably are clearly better choice if your camera supoprt AF-P lens.
Hi KrazyIvan! Thank you for your feedback. You are right that the lack of a physical button on the lens doesn't mean that you cannot do some things. It's a matter of personal taste. I tend to prefer physical buttons over making changes in the menu or using other alternative solutions. Sometimes, a physical button is advantageous when you want to use a lens on a camera not intended for it. Kind regards!
lenses AF-S DX 18-55 VR II P the best
Hi! Thank you very much for watching. Kind regards!
Is it same mount?
Hi! Yes, they are both Nikon F-mount. Thank you for asking!
Why did Nikon release AF-P? Money... it's not compatible with older D cameras. Don't make that mistake
Hi Omar! Thank you for your feedback. Kind regards!
