Absolute life saver! Probably the most useful video I’ve actually watched on TH-cam! Anyone who’s had this problem and the plastic bit is broken or missing, the pick up tube from a cleaning spray bottle works perfectly
Bro...! You are a life saver. I searched my flat like a CIA Swat Team to find something that could possibly fit. The pick up tube fit right over the screw. Thanks!
Just put this old lens in the trash, and on a hunch I went to You Tube and found your video --- Your just saved my old lens. Thank you so very much !!!
Thank you for a great tutorial! This was happening to my lens and Nikon quoted me $115 to fix it, which I declined. I think I broke my ring when I was unscrewing the lens (I could not hear mine when I shook it so I think it got caught somewhere, because I definitely felt a crack). For those who do not have a cleaning spray tube handy, try disassembling a pen - the ink part is too small (for standard pen size) even after propping wider with a small screwdriver, but try the wider part that goes on top of the ink tube near the tip. The circumference is perfect. Get a sharp olfa knife and cut it to the same depth as the broken piece. So happy to have my lens back!
Thanks for posting! Helped me. Size of the bushing is 4.0mm OD, 2.7mm ID, 2.0mm length. McMaster part identified in other posts was too big, most notably on OD. I used Pololu item number 1970, which has above listed dimensions. I checked dimensions on new bushings with calipers before using. Had to sand length, but OD and ID were correct as delivered. Material is clear/white nylon rather than black, hard plastic of original, but that didn't seem to matter. Use at your own discretion. Could not get parts from Nikon or Nikon dealer; would have had to send lens to Nikon for repair.
What a great video- I was so sad when I realised I had damaged my second lens. Saw this video and took the plunge. I first repaired the original lens where the plastic ring was still in one piece. Then I set about looking at the damaged replacement lens, and the ring was broken. I couldn't find the part on the internet, but I had some silicon plastic tubing which fitted perfectly. I am so happy. Best video ever, thank you so much.
What an amazingly simple repair. With mine, the little plastic retaining ring was pretty squished into an oval, but some careful reshaping got it close enough to snap back into place. One additional piece of advice. I didn't realize that there is something of a burr on one side of retainer. After I reassembled the lens I could feel it catching slightly as the zoom went in and out. I took it apart again and flipped the retainer over so the sharp edge was not catching on the lens barrel. Now it's smooth like butter. Thank you!
WOW this video is amazing! Thank you so much for helping me fix my 18-55. I got this lens for free because it was messed up and had stuff shaking around inside it. The front element and zoom ring were very loose. It was bad enough that it caused my lens to be blurry when VR was on. I never thought it would be possible to easily open a lens and fix it, but it was simple with this video. I found the small plastic ring floating around inside and put it back where it belongs. The hardest part was finding it after I accidently dropped it on the floor. Now the lens is like new thank you so much!
I just bought my daughter a used Nikon D3200 for her first DSLR & with not known anything about DSLR's I didn't know to look for this issue nor did the seller tell me the lens was having issues. Thanks to you and your video the lens is functioning great again. Thank you for posting this.
You sir just saved me from having to take my lens to a repair shop on the DAY OF a photo shoot!! I rarely used my kit lens but it always worked fine. But then one day it would have serious focus issues, and lo and behold, one of those little black rings popped out and putting it back in fixed my issue!!!
Thanks, just bought one for $10 - the owner said that AF is malfunctioning and manual focus cannot reach infinity. With your video I fixed it in 5 minutes. Cool purchase :) Thank you!
I'm a retired photo repairman, National Camera graduate. Found a good way to fix this. Stephen is right about every step of this. Sometimes you will find that the tiny plastic sleeve is broken. My fix was some appropriately sized heat shrink tubing, shrink one layer on the stud then another to bring to an acceptable depth. Be careful when you apply a heat gun, I prefer a hair dryer, less heat. Too much heat can melt the light greases used in many lens mechanisms. Use a light touch and just enough heat to shrink it.
Thank you for the kind words Wendell. I am glad you provided the heat shrink solution, that sounds like a perfect way to fix this. I will be trying my hand at fixing some old manual film SLRs and maybe I should post my process. Cheers
Just wanted to comment for others who can't find any heat shrink tubing to replace the plastic piece from the camera (mine was completely missing when I opened my camera). I was able to cut a few mm of the back end of the ink tube in a standard ballpoint pen. However, the inner diameter of the plastic tube is just a little too small for the screw in my D3100. By using a pair of narrow tweezers and a hair dryer, I was able to gently stretch the plastic tube to fit around the peg in the camera. Since the fit is not perfect, you may want to apply a (very) small amount of glue to stabilize it. Be sure not to get in on any other part of the rails and let it fully dry before putting the camera back together! Overall, thank you Stephen and Wendell for the tips--I'm about to go to Kilimanjaro in a week and was able to rescue my camera just in time!
One ring was broken in half. I used your idea, cut a tiny bit from an ink tube with a sharp knife, and squeezed a nail through it until it was large enough to fit. It worked great! There's a tiny bit of play, but way better than before.
Hi there, Thank you so much for posting this video as I was resigned to buying a new lens for €200 until I found your excellent repair tutorial. Really very grateful. All the best. Graham Hurley (Ireland)
It took me forever to get that little piece over the screw. Over an hour...but it works again!!!! Thank you so much for this video!!! You saved me a lot of money
You're my hero, man. I recently bought my first dSLR off the classifieds. It was a mint D3100 with this same exact lens. I got it for peanuts, because the owner said, that the AF was malfunctioning. I took it home, took the lens apart and, sure enough, the little plastic ring had popped off the screw. It was jammed between the mechanisms inside the lens. A ten minute fiddle and my, now good as new, dirt cheap kit is in working order. I feel a bit bad for the owner because, she really believed, she was selling me an expensive brick.
Thank u for this! Actually I misread the title, i thought it was about how to fix my error autofocus. I realized it after I had gone through half of ur vid (and yes I did disassemble the lens) but magically it worked!!!!!! Still cant believe it! Thanks !!!!!
Really helpful video thank you. Saved either an expensive repair bill or a new lens. Really easy to follow and as you say it just snapped back in, no glue needed. I have no practical skills whatsoever but still managed to do it in about 10 minutes. You’re a star!
Thanks for the video, Stephen. My wife had exactly the same lens with exactly the same problem, which meant autofocus often would not work and not let make any pictures. We thought we would have to change the whole camera, until I stumbled upon your video.
Thanks Stephen! Your video allowed me to repair my girlfriend's lens! I struggled a bit with the step where you use the pry tool. I didn't have a tool exactly like that, and I ended up using a pair of measuring spoons with thin, flat stainless steel handles. Prying one side at a time wasn't working, but the clips suddenly let go when I inserted handles into both sides simultaneously. I hope that helps someone!
Amazing!..Had written my lens off and this video has been so useful. One of the little plastic rings was rattling around inside and had somehow been flattened. Watched this video, followed the steps and bingo! May thanks
Hello, at about 5:27 you reattached the plastic cover ring. On my 18-55 the only issue is that cover ring. It has come off and when I tried to put it back into place, it doesn't snap tight so the ring keeps coming off. This doesn't affect use of the lens but I think without this cover ring, dirt can get inside the lens. Any tips as to how to reattach this cover ring where it stays put? That would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Steve
oh my gosh thank you so much this is exactly what I needed and I definitely would not have figured this out if it was not for your video. Thank you again.
hello sir! can you please share a video on how to disassemble new 18-55 lens. i.e the 18-55 vr G II. I tried to fix mine and now I'm at a point where I don't know how to open the barrel and I failed to find a video which shows the disassemble process of new 18-55. Thank you
Thank you so much! I recently found this issue on my Nikon 3200. The little bushing had fallen out and jammed the autofocus. It took a while to find it, it was jammed in a slot in the focal length slider. I had no idea how it came apart, but your video clearly showed the entire process. Thanks again!
Brilliant! This video gave me the confidence to tackle my DX 18-70 lens, slightly different cover which is removed by one screw then clipped off firmly ... inside there are three large silver mounting screws that had come loose. Tightened these then just a bit fiddly to get the two covers back on but hey presto! Good as new. Thank you Stephen.
i opened up my second hand lens and it was literally filled with garbage! someone tried to fix the wobble with paper, stuck around the inside of the lens. and 2 of the tiny black screws were missing. so i improvised and rolled up some tape and fixed it! thank you for this informative video
didn't even came for this (I was searching for how to fix the loosy rubber) , but I take it 'cause it has the same problem. I thought there was no way to fix it but wow... thanks my friend
Thank you for sharing this repair tip. Wow, just think how many lenses have been already recovered! And it seems like some sort of design or manufacturing problem. Those rings should not become loose so easily.
Great repair, I purchased a broken lense, exactly the same problem, with a bayonet broken, I will fix this in the morning when its bright light, thanks for this :)
Thank you so much for this Stephen! I wish I saw this first... saw another video, spent an hour totally disassembling and still couldn't fix. Saw this video, three minutes later I was done. Thanks again.
Thank you for this information. My daughter noticed while using my old D70 with the 18-55 mm lens a wobble on the autofocus (I now know what to call it) even though pictures appeared to be ok. You have given me the confidence to have a go at sorting it out.
Thanks. Very easy to repair. Luckily the small plastic ring wasn't broken. I must have banged the lens against something and didn't notice it until I saw it sort of dangling. Don't use glue to attempt fixing this!
www.mcmaster.com/#93657a201/=19z2g49 Here is a link to the closest one I could find which should fit. It may need a bit of sanding of the height though. The actual dimensions of the spacers in the lens are: Outside Diameter: 4mm Inside Diameter: 3mm and Height: 2mm. I hope this helps!
i'm not sure of dismantling the focus ring would be possible without any digital error connection of the lens. 'cause i wanna clean the eyeball of my pentax kitlens 18-35mm. i've notice small particles inside appeared like a noise when seeing through the viewfinder. not clear and clean frame anymore. now i'm sure it's possible after watching your video. thanks Bro!
Thanks! This was very helpful. I had the same problem except the plastic ring was snapped in two, but I found the link to a replacement you posted in another comment. Nikon support said they couldn't supply one and wanted me to send the lens in for repair, which would have been much more expensive. (So thanks again!)
Great video, Totally had this problem on my 18-55mm. I read thru the comments and found the replacement part supplier with Pololu. Should be an easy fix when I get the parts in and my old lens can live on another day. thanks!
Thanks so much, managed to fix my daughters camera following your really valuable vid. Rich (UK). Any ideas on D7200 pop up flashes, mine is on it's third replacement unit.
my daughter dropped the camera, but it's ok, it's my fault and I love her so much. and I am watching this video in 2020 and I would love to say thank you very much although that I broke that little piece but it still works. thank you sir
Awsome video great help super easy! BUT your right that's my problem, but mine is destroyed the little bushings are actually broken. Any ideas on getting new ones?

Thank you so much for this video!! As a new photographer, I often feel like I am way out of my league here but your video made me feel better and I was able to repair the lens!
Thanks a lot man. I thought I was going to throw some couple of bucks for the repair (or replacement of parts) but it only took minutes. Thanks for the tutorial video.
Thank you SO MUCH for this instructional video. I have just fixed my lens which had the exact same problem. Your instructions are clear and concise, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
I also got these lens used with my camera they have the same problem as your but they did have the little plastic washer. do you have any idea what they are called.
I have a lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II MADE IN THAILAND It locked the focus, it doesn’t rotate either manually or automatically you have some video how to disassemble this lens. I see several but not and with this ending 3.5-5.6GII I thank
I opened up my lens and found this exact problem except the plastic washer had broken. Any idea where I could get a new one or even what the part number is? Thanks for the useful walkthrough Stephen. Cheers

Thanks, some platic electrical wire insulation that i stripped off a spare roll is working pretty well. I tried the ink tube from a bic pen but the plastic isnt elastic enough.
No, it seemed like it operates and is tight, but it isn't autofocusing so I ordered the hard o rings. It may be something else is wrong, but I don't know yet.
My problem is same as you, a piece of plastic loose inside and i can’t use the autofocus mode, it just became jammed in autofocus but works well in manual mode, is this the way to fix it?
Great video but unfortunately one of the plastic rings was broke. I've emailed a couple of camera repair shops to see if they have a ring. Can't find it at the Nikon parts site. Have you found any alternative yet, or is it time to just break down and buy a new lens. Thanks

something internal is broken inside my 18-55. it hunts way too much, especially when theres good light. please tell me how to fix this? can i take it to a specialized camera repair shop?
Off subject a little, any idea on how to remove the glass on the top side of the aperture? There is something on mine and I'm trying to clean it. Thanks!
Hello I know this was years ago but if you see this what is the plastic ring called? Mine is broken in half and I’d love to know the name so I can search it up and get a replacement. Thanks for any help ❣️

Spot on. In my case, the bushing was snapped so I 3D printed a replacement! A little trial and error, but it's saved me the cost of a new lens!

Hey, I’m having the same problem. Did you end up finding where to purchase them?

This is what i used, it worked like a charm. Make sure is a 2mm diameter one.
Have a nice day !
www.mcmaster.com/#93657a201/=19z2g49 Here is a link to the closest one I could find which should fit. It may need a bit of sanding of the height though. The actual dimensions of the spacers in the lens are: Outside Diameter: 4mm Inside Diameter: 3mm and Height: 2mm. I hope this helps!
I have same problem with my canon 18-55 mm lens. Is this the reason?

I opened up my lens and found this exact problem except the plastic washer had broken. Any idea where I could get a new one or even what the part number is? Thanks for the useful walkthrough Stephen. Cheers

Thanks, some platic electrical wire insulation that i stripped off a spare roll is working pretty well. I tried the ink tube from a bic pen but the plastic isnt elastic enough.
I did the same. Stripped the insulation off of some 10 gauge wire.
Leo Weisman did the plastic from 10 gauge wire fixed this? I have same issue. Thanks in advance
No, it seemed like it operates and is tight, but it isn't autofocusing so I ordered the hard o rings. It may be something else is wrong, but I don't know yet.
excellent video ! thanks for your clear instructions.
Thank you! You're welcome, glad I could help!
Really heplful, but I am missing those plastic pieces... Anything I can do about it?

Great video! Thanks for posting. Fixed my lens in no time!
Off subject a little, any idea on how to remove the glass on the top side of the aperture? There is something on mine and I'm trying to clean it. Thanks!
Not too sure, it looks to me like it is pressed in so no access from the front unfortunately.
Well done mate... repaird mine watching your video =) THX ALOT!!!
Absolutely perfect! Thank you. I bought mine used and it had this exact issue. Fixed now!
Hello I know this was years ago but if you see this what is the plastic ring called? Mine is broken in half and I’d love to know the name so I can search it up and get a replacement. Thanks for any help ❣️
I had one stuck at around 35mm and this was exactly what I needed! No wonder they revised this lens since that's a pretty poor design.
